DRIFT Study of CuO–CeO2–TiO2 Mixed Oxides for NOx Reduction with NH3 at Low Temperatures

Lei Chen,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng

A CuO–CeO2–TiO2 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) at low temperatures was prepared by a sol–gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunner–Emmett–Teller surface area, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, scanning electron microscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). The CuO–CeO2–TiO2 ternary oxide catalyst shows excellent NH3-SCR activity in a low-temperature range of 150–250 °C. Lewis acid sites generated from Cu2+ are the main active sites for ammonia activation at low temperature, which is crucial for low temperature NH3-SCR activity. The introduction of ceria results in increased reducibility of CuO species and strong interactions between CuO particles with the matrix. The interactions between copper, cerium and titanium oxides lead to high dispersion of metal oxides with increased active oxygen and enhanced catalyst acidity. Homogeneously mixed metal oxides facilitate the “fast SCR” reaction among Cu2+–NO, nitrate (coordinated on cerium sites) and ammonia (on titanium sites) on the CuO–CeO2–TiO2 catalyst at low temperatures.

Highly efficient decomplexation of chelated nickel and copper effluent through CuO–CeO2–Co3O4 nanocatalyst loaded on ceramic membrane

Xianhua Ji,Huiyu Liang,Sukai Hu,Bo Yang,Ke Xiao,Gang Yu

A novel CuO–CeO 2 –Co 3 O 4 nanocatalyst loaded on Al 2 O 3 ceramic composite membrane (CCM-S) was synthesized through spraying-calcination method, which can be beneficial to the engineering application of scattered granular catalyst. BET and FESEM-EDX testing revealed that CCM-S possessed a porous character with high BET surface area of 22.4 m 2 /g and flat modified surface with extremely fine particle aggregation. The CCM-S calcined above 500 °C presented excellent anti-dissolution effect due to the formation of crystals. XPS indicated that the composite nanocatalyst possessed the variable valence states, which were conducive to exert the catalytic effect of Fenton-like reaction. Subsequently, the effects of experimental parameters including fabricate method, calcination temperature, H 2 O 2 dosage, initial pH value, and CCM-S amount were further investigated considering the removal efficiency of Ni(II)-complex and COD after decomplexation and precipitation (pH = 10.5) treatment within 90 min. Under the optimal reaction condition, the residual Ni(II)-complex and Cu(II)-complex concentration from actual wastewater was all lower than 0.18 mg/L and 0.27 mg/L, respectively; meanwhile, the removal efficiency of COD was all higher than 50% in the mixed electroless plating effluent. Besides, the CCM-S could still maintain high catalytic activity after a six-cycle test, and the removal efficiency was slightly declined from 99.82% to 88.11%. These outcomes indicated that CCM-S/H 2 O 2 system was provided with a potential applicability on treatment of real chelated metal wastewater.

A CuO-CeO2 composite prepared by calcination of a bimetallic metal-organic framework for use in an enzyme-free electrochemical inhibition assay for malathion

Xie Yu,Tu Xiaolong,Ma Xue,Fang Qingwen,Liu Guangbin,Dai Runying,Qu Fengli,Yu Yongfang,Lu Limin,Huang Xigen

An enzyme-free electrochemical method is described for the determination of trace levels of malathion. It is based on a nanostructured copper-cerium oxide (CuO-CeO 2 ) composite prepared by calcination of a Cu(II)/Ce(III) metal-organic framework. The morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of composite was studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The principle for malathion determination is based on the fact that the redox signal of CuO (best measured at around −0.1 V vs. SCE) (at 100 mV/s) is inhibited by malathion due to affinity between CuO and the sulfur groups of malathion. The introduction of CeO 2 into the composite system further improves the analytical performance. This is attributed to the unique microstructure and the synergistic effect between CuO and CeO 2 . Experimental parameters like solution pH value, Cu/Ce molar ratio, accumulation potential, accumulation time, and CuO-CeO 2 volume on the electrode were optimized. The assay has a linear range of 10 fM to 100 nM and a 3.3 fM detection limit (at S/N  = 3). The electrode is selectively inhibited by malathion even in the presence of potentially interfering substances. A sensitive and effective enzyme-free electrochemical sensor has been developed for the detection of malathion based on CuO-CeO 2 composite derived from bimetallic metal-organic frameworks.

Decomplexation removal of Ni(II)-citrate complexes through heterogeneous Fenton-like process using novel CuO-CeO2-CoOx composite nanocatalyst

Huiyu Liang,Ke Xiao,Liyan Wei,Bo Yang,Gang Yu,Shubo Deng,Huabo Duan,Caizhen Zhu,Juying Li,Junmin Zhang

A novel CuO-CeO 2 -CoO x nanocatalyst was prepared for heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction to break the Ni 2+ -chelate into free Ni 2+ in electroless nickel plating wastewater, followed by separation of Ni 2+ in an insoluble form. The composite nanocatalysts prepared by co-precipitation method were characterized by XRD, TEM, and XPS, et al. Its catalytic activity as Fenton-like reagent was evaluated by the removal efficiency of Ni(II)-citrate after decomplexation and postprecipitation treatment. Subsequently, the effects of operating parameters on the decomplexation efficiency of the nanocatalysts were investigated including calcination temperature of catalysts, H 2 O 2 concentration, catalyst dosage, initial pH and reaction temperature. Under optimized condition, the Ni(II)-citrate complexes ( C 0  = 1.0 mM) achieved the complete decomplexation (>99.9%) within 60-min reaction using 0.3 g/L of CuO-CeO 2 -CoO x calcined at 450 °C and 75 mM of H 2 O 2 at pH 3.0 under 50 °C of reaction. Then, Ni 2+ after decomplexation could be completely removed by the subsequent precipitation at pH 11.0. In addition, the life test of CuO-CeO 2 -CoO x catalyst indicated that, after recycled 10 times, its activity for decomplexation of Ni(II)-citrate decreased no more than 8%. As a result, this new heterogeneous Fenton-like process is promising for decomplexation and purification of electroless nickel plating wastewater as a sludge reduction technology.

Singlet oxygen dominated peroxymonosulfate activation by CuO-CeO2 for organic pollutants degradation: Performance and mechanism

Zhendong Li,Dongfang Liu,Yingxin Zhao,Songrong Li,Xiaocheng Wei,Fansheng Meng,Wenli Huang,Zhongfang Lei

In this study, CuO-CeO 2 was synthesized via an easy hydrothermal-calcination method and innovatively applied to peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for pollutants degradation under a non-radical oxidation pathway. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominated reactive oxygen species in the CuO-CeO 2 /PMS system, leading to a dramatical degradation efficiency with Rhodamine B (RhB) as model compounds. The observed rate constant of the CuO-CeO 2 /PMS system was 7–11 times higher than that of only PMS , CeO 2 /PMS and CuO/PMS systems. Also, under the reaction conditions of 1.6 mM PMS, 0.4 g/L catalyst and initial pH 7, the degradation efficiencies of RhB, Methylene Blue , Reactive Blue 19 and atrazine were respectively up to 100%, 85.39%, 72.84% and 98.44% in 60 min. X-ray photoelectron microscopy analysis indicated that the electrons transfer between CuO and CeO 2 and the formation of oxygen vacancy in CeO 2 should be responsible for the enhanced 1 O 2 production, which involved a new non-radical oxidation pathway for PMS activation by CuO-CeO 2 catalyst. Moreover, the combination of CuO and CeO 2 increased reusability and stability of catalyst, allowing it remove more than 92% of RhB over a wide pH range (pH = 3–9). This study not only proved that CuO-CeO 2 is an efficient and stable PMS activator but also provided a new insight into PMS activation through a non-radical oxidation pathway for organic contaminants removal from wastewater.

Insight into catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene total oxidation over Cu-Ce supported catalyst

Xuan Liang,Jin Zhang,Juntai Tian,Zenghua Xie,Yue Liu,Peng Liu,Daiqi Ye

Herein, three supported catalysts, CuO/Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , and CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , were synthesized by the convenient impregnation method to reveal the effect of CeO 2 addition on catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene oxidation. Compared with CuO/Al 2 O 3 , the T 50 and T 90 (the temperatures at 50% and 90% toluene conversion, respectively) of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 were reduced by 33 and 39 °C, respectively. N 2 adsorption-desorption experiment, XRD, SEM, EDS mapping, Raman, EPR, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, Toluene-TPD, and in-situ DRIFTS were conducted to characterize these catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 could be attributed to its strong copper-cerium interaction and high oxygen vacancies concentration. Moreover, in-situ DRIFTS proved that CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 promoted the conversion of toluene to benzoate and accelerated the deep degradation path of toluene. This work provided valuable insights into the development of efficient and economical catalysts for volatile organic compounds.

Thermal Catalytic Decomposition of Dimethyl Methyl Phosphonate Using CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3

Han Gao,Weimin Kong,Shuyuan Zhou,Xuwei Wang,Qingrong He,Yanchun Dong

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are highly toxic and fast-acting and are easy to cause large-scale poisoning to humans and livestock after being released. The activated carbon used for CWAs adsorption has disadvantages of limited adsorption capacity, easy aging and deactivation. Metal oxides have environmental stability, and they are characterized by long lasting and broad spectrum when used for thermal catalytic decomposition. Therefore, in this study, the supported copper–cerium catalyst CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3was prepared using an equal volume impregnation method. The thermal catalytic decomposition performance was studied using sarin CWAs simulant dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) as the target compound. The results show that the CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3catalyst with a CeO2loading of 5% exhibited better thermal catalytic decomposition performance of DMMP. The catalyst provided protection against DMMP for 237 min at 350 °C; CuO was highly dispersed on CuO-5% CeO2/γ-Al2O3, and there was a strong interaction between Cu and Ce on CuO-5% CeO2/γ-Al2O3, which promoted the generation of surface-adsorbed oxygen, leading to a better thermal catalytic decomposition performance of DMMP. This study is expected to provide a reference for the study of catalysts for the thermal catalytic decomposition of CWAs.Keywords:nerve agent;dimethyl methyl phosphonate;thermocatalytic;CuO;CeO2;γ-Al2O3

Constructing CuO-CeO2 heterointerfaces for enhanced Low-Temperature CO oxidation and SO2 resistance

Archer Bright,Wuyi Zhang,Kaisong Xiang,Hao Chen,Hui Liu,Jun Wu

CuO-CeO 2 composite catalyst for low temperature CO oxidation was fabricated via an impregnation method. The prepared composite CuO-CeO 2 achieved 50 % and 100 % conversion at approximately ∼ 70℃ and ∼ 110℃ (denoted as T 50 and T 100 ), respectively. The enhanced catalytic activities were attributed to the formation of abundant CuO/CeO 2 heterostructures, which increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies in their lattices. In addition, the pore structure of the CuO-CeO 2 composite has also been optimized during the impregnation synthesis process. Compared with bare CeO 2 , which only possesses micropores, CuO-CeO 2 forms more mesopores on its surface, which assists in reducing the deposition rate of sulfate species on the surface. The SO 2 tolerance of the catalyst and hence its stability towards practical industrial flue gas treatment is significantly promoted. Furthermore, Density Functional Theory (DFT) was also performed to explore the mechanism of CO oxidation on the CuO-CeO 2 . It was found that the oxygen vacancy can be easily formed on the CuO/CeO 2 heterointerfaces; the adsorption energy (ΔG) of CO was therefore decreased to 0.15 eV, much lower than that of bare CeO 2 (0.53 eV). Besides, the center of f electrons of Ce in CeO 2 rises from −0.55 eV to – 1.71 eV by introducing CuO, suggesting that the f electrons in Ce become more active, which is beneficial for CO to adsorb.

Development of platinum assisted ternary catalyst with high activity and selectivity at working temperature of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells for preferential oxidation of CO

Tuya Naren,Guojuan Jing,Lei Xue,Qi Wang,Yuansong Zhao,Caixia Li,Suhong Lu,Jinfang Wu,Shanghong Zeng

The development of superior catalysts for preferential oxidation of CO has always maintained challenging in heterogeneous catalysis . Herein it is found that the Pt 0.05 /CuO–CeO 2 catalyst exhibited high activity and selectivity for preferential oxidation of CO at working temperature of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (~80 °C). The studies indicate that the presence of platinum and cerium promote the generation of oxygen vacancy and the dissociation of O 2 molecules. Meanwhile, the introduction of platinum facilitates the reduction of copper and cerium species as well as enhances the quantity of lattice oxygen. The timely update of lattice oxygen promotes CO oxidation with the help of oxygen vacancy. The finding may provide new ideas for developing the excellent ternary catalyst for preferential oxidation of CO at the proton-exchange membrane fuel cells working temperature.

Enhanced Catalytic Performance of (CuO)x/Ce0.9Cu0.1O2 Nanospheres: Combined Contribution of the Synergistic Effect and Surface Defects

Hongxiao Yang,Yue Pan,Yucong Xu,Yanzhao Yang,Guoxin Sun

Graphical Stuck in the middle : A series of copper-modified ceria catalysts has been synthesized in a facile way. (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 showed excellent catalytic activity in CO low-temperature oxidation. The combined contribution of the synergistic effect and surface defects facilitates the CO oxidation at the interface between ceria and copper species (see scheme). Copper-modified ceria catalysts, (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres, for low-temperature CO oxidation were fabricated simply by using the hydrothermal synthesis of Cu-doped CeO 2 (Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 ) nanospheres followed by deposition of CuO over Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 . The X-ray diffraction and electron spectroscopy characterizations demonstrated that the as-prepared nanospheres were composed of cubic CeO 2 and monoclinic CuO with a typical diameter of around 70 nm. Moreover, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis illustrated the coexistence of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + redox couples in (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 and H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements indicated the excellent reduction behavior of the catalyst. The Raman spectra illustrated the oxygen vacancy in (CuO) 0.3 /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 , and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) demonstrated the stable existence of Cu + species during CO oxidation. The (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres showed excellent catalytic activity toward CO oxidation in normal feed gas (volume ratio of CO/O 2 /N 2 =1:10:89) at ambient temperature. Catalytic tests revealed that the proportion of CuO in the final product has a strong influence on the resultant catalytic activities. The (CuO) x /Ce 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 2 nanospheres hold great application potential as new catalysts for CO oxidation.

Sn-induced CuO–CeO2 catalysts with improved performance for CO preferential oxidation in H2-rich streams

Zhijun Zhang,Kezhen Chen,Jichang Lu,Qin Zou,Yuhui Zhao,Yongming Luo,Dedong He,Rongtao Li

Sn modified CuO–CeO 2 catalysts with different Sn loadings were prepared by a facile, green and solvent-free method. The effect of Sn/Ce ratio over Sn–Cu–Ce-x (x = 0, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5) samples on CO activity and O 2 selectivity was investigated. The samples were characterized by various techniques using N 2 -adsorption/desorption, XRD , H 2 -TPR, XPS, Raman and in-situ DRIFTS . It was revealed that stronger interaction between acitve sites and support, higher amounts of Sn 2+ and Ce 3+ , associated with increased amount of oxygen vacancies , were observed on the catalyst of Sn–Cu–Ce-5. As a result, the optimized catalyst displayed an excellent catalytic performance even in the presence of CO 2 and H 2 O. In this sense, probing the Sn modified CuO–CeO 2 catalyst can elucidate some useful keys for the development of high CO 2 and H 2 O-resistance catalyst during CO-preferential oxidation in H 2 -rich streams.

Modulating electronic Metal–Support interactions of Pt-CuO/CeO2 catalyst via quenching to optimize catalytic activity

Shuaiqi Zhao,Jiajin Lin,Wenqiang Gong,Aihua Xu,Xiaoxia Li,Yongcai Qiu

Pt-based catalysts are one of the most extensively used heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of pollutants, and regulating electron-metal-support interaction (EMSI) is an efficient strategy to enhance the performance of Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we introduced a quenching technique for regulating the EMSI of Pt-CuO/CeO 2 catalysts to significantly boost its CO catalytic activity. The EMSI optimized by quenching was determined to promote the electron redistribution between Pt and CuO/CeO 2 via Cu–O-Pt structure, thus forming more electron-rich Pt species and enhancing the surface oxygen species activity. From comprehensive characterization investigations, we confirmed that the superior activity arouse from the moderate Pt 0 /Pt 2+ ratio, in which CO molecules were preferentially adsorbed on the electron-rich Pt sites and reacted with active oxygen species from PtO x or CuO/CeO 2 , accelerating the whole CO catalytic process. Our finding provided a new inspiration to control EMSI of Pt-based catalysts and widened the application of quenching chemistry in heterogeneous catalysis.
