The application of heterogeneous catalysts in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from methanol is hindered by low activation efficiency of methanol to methoxy intermediates (CH 3 O*), which is the key intermediate for DMC generation. Herein, a catalyst of alkali metal K anchored on the CuO/ZnO oxide is rationally designed for offering Lewis acid–base pairs as dual active centers to improve the activation efficiency of methanol. Characterizations of CO 2 -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, and DRIFTS revealed that the addition of Lewis base K observably boosted the dissociation of methanol and combined with Lewis acid CuO/ZnO oxide to adsorb the formed CH 3 O* stably, thus synergistically promoted the transesterification. Finally, the CuO/ZnO-9%K 2 O catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic activity, achieving a high yield of 74.4% with an excellent selectivity of 98.9% for DMC at a low temperature of 90°C. The strategy of constructing Lewis acid–base pairs provides a reference for the design of heterogeneous catalysts.

A catalyst layer is coated on the fuel electrode in a proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis cell reactor, which can optimize electrochemical performance and expand the application range of the reactor. In this work, CuO–ZnO catalyst is prepared by oxalate co-precipitation method and combined with a single cell to obtain a reactor with the structure of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) ǀ BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) ǀ NiO-BZCYYb (active layer) ǀ NiO-BZCYYb (support layer) | CuO–ZnO (catalyst layer). The electrolysis current density of this reactor with humid air as oxidant and 20%CO 2 –80%H 2 as fuel is 2751 mA cm −2 under 1.3 V at 750 °C. It operates steadily for 138 h under 1.3 V electrolysis at 650 °C, which is better than the reactor without a catalyst layer under this condition. Additionally, CO and CH 4 are detected in the exhaust gas on the fuel electrode side, and the CO selectivity reaches over 90% at 750-550 °C.

Cu-based catalysts featured with high activity at low temperatures and suppressed CO generation are expected to attract significant attention in the methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction for on-board hydrogen production for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we demonstrate that Ag incorporation into a CuO/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst leads to enhanced hydrogen production activity and suppressed CO selectivity in MSR reactions at low temperatures (200–220 °C). The characterization results revealed that incorporation of a small amount of Ag in the catalyst not only improves the dispersion of the polymetallic components and diversifies the Cu species, but also lowers Cu reduction temperature and brings more oxygen vacancies , thereby leading to improved catalytic performance. The preparation conditions, structure-activity relationship, and stability of the Ag-promoted catalyst were investigated in detail based on time-on-steam tests and characterizations. This finding paves a new possible way for the optimization of the Cu-based catalysts for MSR.

Hollow carbon–nitrogen nanoreactors constitute a class of porous materials that have widespread application owing to their large inner cavities, low densities, core–shell interfaces, and enrichment effects. Direct carbonization of precursors is the simplest and most economical method to prepare porous carbon–nitrogen materials; however, this method requires high temperatures, thus yielding nonoxide structures. In this study, CuO–ZnO@CN (CN: carbon–nitrogen layers) is prepared using the two-step heating of zeolitic imidazolium skeleton-8 (ZIF-8) coated with CuO–ZnO precursors. During carbonization, the ZIF-8 nanoparticles are converted into carbon–nitrogen layers at high temperatures. Next, a heating process based on the autocatalytic effect of Cu can be used to etch the hollow structure prepared by the carbon–nitrogen layers. The CuO–ZnO@CN hollow composites fabricated using this method exhibit excellent catalytic properties for the ethynylation of formaldehyde. The proposed strategy can be used to develop techniques for syntheses of readily reducible carbon oxide claddings and their composites.

Hierarchical CuO–ZnO/SiO 2 (CZS) nanofibrous membranes are designed and fabricated to remove Congo red and 4-nitrophenol two common small molecular pollutants in water. The electrospun SiO 2 fibrous membrane is serves as the substrate for hydrothermal depositing CuO–ZnO nanosheets. The CZS nanofibrous membrane shows good adsorption characteristics for Congo red due to the hierarchical morphology and the adsorption kinetics where isotherm follows the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for Congo red is 141.8 mg/g. Moreover, the membrane exhibits excellent catalytic reduction activity for 4-nitrophenol under mild conditions and over 96% of the pollutants are degraded within 90 s. The CZS nanofibrous membrane has promising prospects in applications in water treatment and environmental protection because of the good flexibility, easy fabrication, excellent adsorption, and catalytic activity. Multiple heterojunction made of CuO nanocrystals building on ZnO scaffold buffered by an In 2 O 3 interlayer is fabricated through simple wet chemistry. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy reveal this CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterojunction forming multi-core-shell nanostructure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is performed to analyze the chemical compositions. Such system is further employed in sunlight-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting, wherein Mott-Schottky analysis demonstrates its flat-band potential negatively shifted. This originates from the lower electron affinity of CuO compared to that of ZnO, favoring photocurrent generation at early onset potential. More importantly, the entire gamut of visible-light is harnessed by CuO, as manifested in the photocurrent action spectrum. Last but not least, the charge-separation is promoted at the In 2 O 3 interface, as reflected in the impedance measurement. The synergistic effect endows the CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO photoelectrode with the highest photocurrent of 1.22 mA⋅cm −2 (at ∼1.6 V vs. RHE) that outperforms those of the CuO/ZnO and ZnO photoanodes, respectively.

In the present work, we synthesized CuO-ZnO (CZ) nanocomposites using a bio-templated method from biowaste-eggshell membranes (ESM). Results showed that CZ-ESM nanocomposites of morphology and structure preserved the original structural characteristics of ESM with interlaced network coated by small inorganic nanoparticles. In addition, the samples exhibit excellent adsorption, catalysis and antibacterial activities. Experimental results showed the adsorption kinetics and isotherm were well described by pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model for Congo red dye, the maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 775 mg•g −1 . The catalysis reduction efficiency of CZ-ESM nanocomposites for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reached 98% after 12 min at room temperature. CZ-ESM could be recycled several times without any significant activity loss. Furthermore, the results of antibacterial experiments indicated that CZ-ESM nanocomposites exhibited a strong inhibition activity against E. coli and S. aureus . The maximum diameter of the inhibition zone was 27.5 mm for S. aureus and 20.3 mm for E. coli .

Bimetallic-organic frameworks and their derivatives have attracted intensive attention in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production due to their high porosity, distinctive three-dimensional structure, and favorable specific surface area. Despite these advantages, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production remains unsatisfactory owing to rapid complexation of electron-hole pairs and limited visible light utilization. Herein, in this work, the autogenous CuO–ZnO heterojunction nanoparticles are assembled on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by calcining copper-zinc bimetallic-organic frameworks. The autogenous heterojunctions offer numerous active sites and enhance electron transfer at tightly bound heterogeneous interfaces. Furthermore, RGO acts as a co-catalyst or substrate, improving photocatalytic performance with its high surface area and excellent electron transport properties. Consequently, the RGO/CuO–ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction achieves an impressive hydrogen production rate of 479.73 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 94.06 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Overall, this work optimizes the potential of metal-organic framework-derived photocatalysts in hydrogen production and offers valuable insights into the effective construction of autogenous heterojunctions.

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) driven by the renewable energy represents an effective approach to mitigate atmospheric CO 2 concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality. Zinc (Zn) and its oxides, being among the most abundant metal materials, are frequently employed in the generation of CO by ECO 2 R. Cooper and its oxides have the moderate *CO affinity which enables the C-C coupling reaction to produce the higher value C2+ products. In this work, we have developed the novel CuO/ZnO p-n heterojunction tandem catalyst using a straightforward solvothermal method. By optimizing the content of CuO/ZnO heterojunction, a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 37% for C 2 H 4 can be achieved in a gas diffusion flow cell, which is one of the highest among the Cu-Zn-based catalysts for ECO 2 R. Mechanism investigations illuminate that CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface enhances the adsorption of *CO 2 – intermediates facilitating the formation of *CO intermediates than pristine CuO, meanwhile weakens the adsorption of *H impeding the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Therefore, the spillover of CO from ZnO to CuO sites and the electrons rebalance on CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface promote the C-C coupling reaction rates, thus greatly enhances the selectivity for C 2 H 4 .

In view of lead-free low-softening CuO–ZnO–B 2 O 3 –Li 2 O glass, novel glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites were prepared by solid-state reaction route for ultra-low temperature co-fired ceramic (ULTCC) applications. The phase evolution and compositions, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of the composites were studied by XRD , SEM and dielectric property measurement. Four phases including Cu 2 Al 6 B 4 O 17 , Li 2 CuB 4 O 8 , CuB 2 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 coexist in the glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites sintered in the range of 640–660 °C. However, the contents and types of the phases depend on the composition of the composites and firing temperature. The optimum properties with a permittivity ε r = 3.79, a quality factor Q × f = 38557 GHz (at 16.64 GHz) and a temperature coefficient of resonance frequency τ f ≈0 ppm/ o C as well as a heat conductivity λ = 1.46W(mK) −1 can be achieved for the glass/ceramic composite containing 10 wt% Al 2 O 3 sintered at 640 °C. Moreover, the composite can be co-fired compatible with Ag and Al electrodes. The as-prepared glass/Al 2 O 3 ceramic composites are promising candidate for ULTCC application.

The increasing application of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) has posed an emerging challenge to wastewater treatment processes. The short-term impacts of CuNPs, CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process were investigated firstly in this study. CuONPs, ZnONPs and AgNPs up to 50 mg g −1 suspended solid (SS) did not affect anammox activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or cell membrane integrity. However, 1.25 mg g −1 SS CuNPs significantly inhibited the anammox activity and the loads that caused 50% inhibition were 4.64 ± 1.24 and 3.27 ± 0.79 mg g −1 SS for anammox granules and flocs, respectively. 5 mg g −1 SS CuNPs caused serious accumulation of the toxic intermediate N 2 H 4 . Furthermore, CuNPs interacted with extracellular polymeric substances by specifically bonding to tyrosine or tryptophan-containing groups, C-O-C in polysaccharides and –OH in polymeric compounds. Therefore, this study calls for more attention to the risks of NPs to the anammox-based processes.

Rapid and effective hydrogen sulfide ( H 2 S ) detection is vital to ensure safety in industrial environments, where it is a common toxic gas. This study utilized Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors to prepare hollow nanocage structure-like CuO/ZnO sensors. By optimizing the ratio of CuO to ZnO, the resulting CuO/ZnO nanomaterials demonstrated ultra-high sensitivity and a swift response to low H 2 S concentrations. The experimental results show that, thanks to its unique nanocage structure and abundant active sites on the surface, the sensor responds up to 3423 to 10 ppm H 2 S with a response time of only 10 s. In addition, the sensor exhibits good stability, selectivity and low lower detection limit at a low operating temperature of 115 °C, and the lower limit of detection for H 2 S reaches 100 ppb (3.04). Furthermore, the examination of the gas-sensing mechanism exposed the collaboration of CuO/ZnO nanocages in gas adsorption and electron transportation. Remarkably, the generation of p-n heterostructures greatly enhanced the sensitivity and selectivity towards H 2 S , while providing a model for constructing and producing high-performance and enduring sensors.
