Efficient and stable inverted planar perovskite solar cells using dopant-free CuPc as hole transport layer

Jinghui Han,Yuxue Tu,Zhiyong Liu,Xingyue Liu,Haibo Ye,Zirong Tang,Tielin Shi,Guanglan Liao

Flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) such as inverted PSCs are gaining increasing attention due to their wide range of potential applications, while the selection of stable, high conductivity and energy level suitable hole transport layers (HTLs) is still challenging. Here we introduce dopant-free copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as HTL in inverted planar PSCs, and demonstrate improved photovoltaic performance and increased stability with high reproducibility and uniformity compared to the PEDOT:PSS based devices. The champion efficiency of PSCs is achieved by 15.4% on rigid substrates and 12.8% on flexible substrates, respectively. The flexible devices also exhibit excellent bending stability, retaining ∼85% of the original power conversion efficiency (PCE) after 3000 bending cycles at r = 5 mm without encapsulation. Our study provides a new strategy for fabricating cost-effective, scalable and flexible PSCs with high efficiency, little hysteresis, and excellent stability.

Multi-Interfacial Engineering of TiO2@TPA-Pt-CuPc Heterostructures for Highly Selective Photocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 Conversion

Qiao Zeng,Jinshan Chen,Chi Wang,Kai Li,Yi Mei

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into CH4 represents a sustainable strategy for carbon recycling, yet achieving efficient multi-electron transfer and selective C–H bond formation remains challenging. Herein, we construct a cooperative multi-interfacial photocatalytic system by integrating copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and photodeposited Pt nanoparticles onto a TiO2@TPA hybrid. The TiO2@TPA framework, derived from MIL-125 hydrolysis, provides robust Ti–O–C linkages and intrinsic ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) channels, while CuPc extends visible-light absorption and facilitates interfacial electron delocalization and migration through its π-conjugated macrocycle. Pt nanoparticles exhibit dual functionality—as electron sinks on TiO2 for multi-electron CO2 reduction and as interfacial bridges promoting charge transfer between TiO2 and CuPc. Comprehensive spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical analyses confirm efficient carrier separation, accelerated interfacial charge transfer, and strong electronic coupling at the heterointerfaces. The optimized TiO2@TPA(15Pt,5Cu) catalyst achieves a CH4 evolution rate of 199.2 μmol·g-1·h-1 with 99.9% selectivity, markedly outperforming single-component or monometallic counterparts. In-situ FTIR spectroscopy reveals successive *COOH, *CO, *CHO, and *CH intermediates, validating the multi-step hydrogenation mechanism. This work extends LMCT-based interface engineering toward deep CO2 methanation, offering new insights for the rational design of highly efficient and selective multi-electron photocatalysts.

A Catalytic and Interfacing PEDOT:PSS/CuPc Polymerized on Cloth Fiber to Electro-Metalize Stretchable Copper Conductive Pattern

Jing Li,Guoyun Zhou,Yan Hong,Chia-Yun Chen,Wei He,Shouxu Wang,Yuanming Chen,Chong Wang,Yukai Sun,Chingping Wong

Copper conductive pattern should provide dependent flexibility on coated cloth-fiber to support the signal transmission or current carrier for stretchable and reliable electronics. The design of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) introduced in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polystyrene sulfonate acid (PEDOT:PSS) polymer network promotes the realization of copper electro-metallization from its inner active dots, leading to a structure of PEDOT:PSS/CuPc-rooted copper coating. The bridge-layer of elastic PEDOT:PSS/CuPc interfacing and catalyzing the copper layer with excellent ductility and antioxidation, is developed to sustain the required stretchability for electronics on regular cloth polyurethane fiber. Experimental results demonstrate that this design achieves a perfect 80% conductivity of bulk copper, an ignored resistance changes after bending test, tensile test, 10 days’ natural oxidation, and 10 times’ machine-washing, respectively. Accordingly, a breakthrough is made to supply the compatible integrity of copper line on cloth fiber for wearable electronics.

Enhanced and Selective Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CH4 Using a Pt-Loaded CuPc/g-C3N4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction Catalyst

Jinshan Chen,Jiangfeng Lu,Ran Lang,Chi Wang,Shuangyou Bao,Yuan Li,Kai Li,Maohong Fan

In this study, a novel Pt-loaded CuPc/g-C 3 N 4 (PtCuCN) composite was synthesized for the selective photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 under visible light. The PtCuCN catalyst achieved a CH 4 yield of 39.8 μmol g⁻ 1 h⁻ 1 , significantly outperforming bulk g-C₃N₄ and CuPc alone by factors of 2.5 and 3.1, respectively, with a high selectivity of 90%. In comparison with other commonly studied photocatalysts, such as g-C 3 N 4 -based catalysts, the PtCuCN composite exhibited superior CH 4 yield and product selectivity, demonstrating its potential as a more efficient photocatalyst for CO₂ reduction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and in-situ infrared (IR) analysis revealed that the Pt⁰ species effectively lower the activation energy for CH 4 formation, while CuPc extends the light absorption range and enhances charge separation. The combined effects of these components in a Z-scheme heterojunction provide new insights into designing highly selective CO 2 -to-CH 4 photocatalysts. This work demonstrates the potential of PtCuCN as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for CO 2 reduction to CH 4 under visible light.

Photoelectrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia over CuPc/CeO2 heterostructure: Understanding the synergistic effect between oxygen vacancies and Ce sites

Xia Li,Weiqiang Fan,Yajie Bai,Ying Liu,Fengfeng Wang,Hongye Bai,Weidong Shi

Photoelectrochemical nitrate (NO 3 – ) reduction reaction (PEC NRR) is a promising technology to solve both environmental pollution and traditional energy crisis. However, the fabrication of efficient catalyst with controllable active sites for high selectivity is still challenging. In this work, copper phthalocyanine (C 32 H 16 CuN 8 )/cerium dioxide (CuPc/CeO 2 ) heterostructure has been designed as a model to understand the role of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ pairs on the formation of oxygen vacancies (OVs), which helps for identifying the key factors to adjust the chemical adsorption and activation of NO 3 – in PEC NRR system. Furthermore, the unique organic–inorganic hybrid matrix significantly strengthens the relationship of solar harvest–carriers’ separation–NO 3 – reduction. CuPc/CeO 2 heterostructure exhibits a high NH 3 yield of 1.16 μmol h −1 cm −2 and Faradic efficiency of 33% (-0.6 V vs.), and the desirable PEC NRR could be well retained for 5 cycles. Therefore, the construction of CuPc/CeO 2 successfully optimizes the thermodynamic and kinetic factors in PEC NRR system, providing a new insight for organic–inorganic hybridization and NH 3 green production.

Highly efficient and selective nitrate electroreduction to ammonia catalyzed by molecular copper catalyst@Ti3C2Tx MXene

Lan-Xin Li,Wu-Ji Sun,Hao-Yu Zhang,Jia-Liang Wei,Shu-Xian Wang,Jing-Hui He,Na-Jun Li,Qing-Feng Xu,Dong-Yun Chen,Hua Li,Jian-Mei Lu

The efficient electroreduction reaction of nitrate (NO3−RR) at low concentrations to ammonia is energetically favorable for ammonia production and environmentally essential to treat water contamination. Copper-based conjugated molecule electrocatalysts for the NO3−RR are advantageous in terms of their customizable Cu-coordinative micro-environment and facile preparation; however, they easily agglomerate due to their large π-conjugating system, which severely lowers the active site density and increases the internal resistance. This study demonstrates that Ti3C2Tx MXenes are promising supports to disperse and anchor a molecular catalyst (copper phthalocyanine, CuPc) to construct a CuPc@MXene electrocatalyst in order to significantly promote NO3−RR performance. 10% CuPc@MXene achieved higher ammonia selectivity (94.0%) and higher nitrate conversion (90.5%) compared to those of unsupported CuPc, and retained high ammonia selectivity (∼80%) after seven recycling tests. The combination of online differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations has showed that CuPc molecules are able to inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction and effectively convert nitrate into ammonia through the ONH reaction pathway. The results showed that the MXene support is applicable to many metal phthalocyanines (MPcs, M = Fe, Co, Ni), demonstrating its potential in other electrochemical catalysis applications.

Ligand engineering towards electrocatalytic urea synthesis on a molecular catalyst

Li Han,Xu Leitao,Bo Shuowen,Wang Yujie,Xu Han,Chen Chen,Miao Ruping,Chen Dawei,Zhang Kefan,Liu Qinghua,Shen Jingjun,Shao Huaiyu,Jia Jianfeng,Wang Shuangyin

Electrocatalytic C-N coupling from carbon dioxide and nitrate provides a sustainable alternative to the conventional energy-intensive urea synthetic protocol, enabling wastes upgrading and value-added products synthesis. The design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts is vital to promote the development of electrocatalytic urea synthesis. In this work, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is adopted as a modeling catalyst toward urea synthesis owing to its accurate and adjustable active configurations. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, it can be observed that the intramolecular Cu-N coordination can be strengthened with optimization in electronic structure by amino substitution (CuPc-Amino) and the electrochemically induced demetallation is efficiently suppressed, serving as the origination of its excellent activity and stability. Compared to that of CuPc (the maximum urea yield rate of 39.9 ± 1.9 mmol h −1 g −1 with 67.4% of decay in 10 test cycles), a high rate of 103.1 ± 5.3 mmol h −1 g −1 and remarkable catalytic durability have been achieved on CuPc-Amino. Isotope-labelling operando electrochemical spectroscopy measurements are performed to disclose reaction mechanisms and validate the C-N coupling processes. This work proposes a unique scheme for the rational design of molecular electrocatalysts for urea synthesis.
