The development of highly efficient metal-free catalysts is a challenge in the field of environmental remediation. Herein, melamine, cyanuric acid and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were innovatively self-assembled and pyrolyzed to prepare novel F-doped carbon nitride catalyst (F-CN). Density Functional Theory (DFT) revealed that the introduction of F induced electron rearrangement on the surface of carbon nitride and formed the nitrogen vacancies (NVs). The F and NVs synergistically induced the surrounding carbon atoms to be positively charged, facilitating the adsorption and activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, different from most previous reports that the identified nitrogen (N) served as the adsorption and activation site for PMS. The experimental results show that F-CN can effectively activate PMS and achieve 100 % BPA degradation within 9 min, with a rate constant of 0.658 min − 1 . Surprisingly, it can even reach 94.96 % BPA degradation rate at 0 °C, which is better than most reported metal free catalysts. Quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test confirmed that 1 O 2 was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS). These findings provide new insights for the design and synthesis of new non-metallic catalysts.

Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH, a magnetic composite, and its counterpart, CoFe-LDH, were successfully synthesized via a co-precipitation method and systematically investigated for their performance and mechanism in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH possessed a typical LDH structure with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the CoFe-LDH matrix, forming a heterojunction interface that effectively combined the magnetism of Fe 3 O 4 and the high catalytic activity of CoFe-LDH. Magnetic analysis (VSM) indicated a saturation magnetization of 23.93 emu/g for the composite, enabling magnetic separation and recovery within 30 s, significantly enhancing the practical applicability. Under optimal conditions (0.07 g/L catalyst, 0.75 mM PMS, pH 6–8, 25 °C), Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH/PMS achieved 97.6 % TC (25 mg/L) degradation, outperforming CoFe-LDH (93.9 %). Radical quenching and ESR revealed sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) and nonradical ( 1 O 2 ) as dominant species, with Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ –Co 2+ synergism promoting 1 O 2 pathways. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed enhanced charge transfer and reduced activation energy at the heterojunction. After four cycles, Fe 3 O 4 @CoFe-LDH retained 82.3 % activity (vs. 73.2 % for CoFe-LDH) and exhibited strong anti-interference (86.8–92.4 % TC removal in natural water), highlighting its engineering potential.

The efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes for eliminating persistent organic pollutants is significantly limited by high residual contaminant levels and complex aqueous matrices. Developing robust and environmentally benign catalysts that can activate PMS while resisting matrix interference is therefore critical for practical wastewater treatment. Herein, we present a porous Co Mn bimetallic oxide (p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 ) integrating dual-metal active sites with mesoporous nanoconfinement, which simultaneously enhances PMS adsorption energy and enriches interfacial pollutant concentration. A direct electron transfer process (ETP) was enabled between the tetracycline (TC) pollutant (as an electron donor) and surface-bound PMS complexes (PMS ⁎ , as an electron acceptor) on p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 . This synergy enables a novelty nonradical electron-transfer pathway (ETP) between tetracycline (electron donor) and surface-bound PMS complexes (PMS ⁎ , electron acceptor), achieved nearly 100 % removal of TC within 15 min and increasing the pseudo-first-order constant from 0.121 to 0.348 min −1 over the non-porous sample. The p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 /PMS system also efficiently degrades binary pollutants and maintains high activity under varied pH, temperature, and complex matrices. This work provides mechanistic insights into how multi-scale structural synergy—at both atomic and nanoscale levels—in bimetallic oxide catalysts regulates PMS activation, offering a promising platform for practical water purification.

Water adsorption on carbon surface is common in humid environments and plays a significant role in interfacial redox processes. We report that water adsorption on hydrophobic carbon surface can lead to interfacial charge transfer. Under ambient air conditions, the adsorption of water facilitates the formation of hydrogen radicals and promotes interfacial reactions such as nitrate reduction. The 1 H solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and Raman spectra of hydrophobic carbon surface indicate that the initial stage of moisture adsorption is characterized by the formation of hydrogen bond network, followed by the adsorption of water molecules. Concurrently, it is observed that the concentration of reduction products on the carbon surface first increases and then stabilizes. We propose that the formation of hydrogen radicals and the progress of interfacial reduction reaction are related to the evolution of hydrogen bond network during water absorption. Using mass spectrometric detection of H 2 18 O in the product during water adsorption, a possible adsorption water favored interfacial reduction pathway was proposed. This research deepens the understanding of relationship between water adsorption and interfacial reactions, providing new insights into observed reduction reaction on surface of fine particles in the atmosphere.

Herein, a novel colorimetric strategy for the multiplex detection of foodborne pathogens utilizing multiple phage-functionalized nanozyme integrating phage-driven specific recognition with nanozyme-catalyzed signal amplification was proposed. Initially, oxidase-like FeCoCe nanoflower (FeCoCe NF) was prepared, which can catalyze generation of superoxide anion and singlet oxygen, triggering 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chromogenic reaction. For detection of individual pathogenic bacteria, EhpYZU20, SalmpYZU54, and SapYZUH5 were individually immobilized on the FeCoCe NF, thereby forming EhpYZU20@FeCoCe NF, SalmpYZU54@FeCoCe NF, and SapYZUH5@FeCoCe NF, respectively. They demonstrate high sensitivity, achieving limits of detection of 56.34 CFU mL −1 ( Enterobacter hormaechei ), 39.14 CFU mL −1 ( Salmonella enteritidis ), and 74.36 CFU mL −1 ( Staphylococcus aureus ), along with specific recognition of target pathogens and strong anti-interference capability. For detection of multiple pathogenic bacteria, EhpYZU20, SalmpYZU54, and SapYZUH5 were immobilized on the FeCoCe NF, thereby forming phages@FeCoCe NF. It enabled simultaneous quantification of all three pathogens, achieving LODs, as low as 21.67 ∼ 31.84 CFU mL −1 . In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) further enabled precise differentiation of E. hormaechei , S. enteritidis , and S. aureus based on phages@FeCoCe NF sensor assay. This work provides a robust and versatile tool for food safety surveillance, effectively addressing the challenges posed by complex food matrices and multi-pathogen contamination.

A novel self-assembled Mn 3 O 4 @Bi 5 O 7 I/BiOI (Mn 3 O 4 -BBOI) bi-heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method and systematically characterized to investigate its optoelectronic properties. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated through the degradation of NO in a continuous-flow microreactor. Results indicate the successful construction of two distinct interfacial structures within the Mn 3 O 4 -BBOI system: an interface between Mn 3 O 4 and the Bi 5 O 7 I/BiOI heterostructure, and an internal interface between Bi 5 O 7 I and BiOI. These interfaces exhibit lattice distortions and vacancies, which are critical for promoting charge separation. Specifically, Mn 3 O 4 acts as an electron acceptor, facilitating the transfer of electrons from I⁻ in the bismuth-based substrate to Mn 3 + in Mn 3 O 4 , thereby optimizing the generation and recombination dynamics of charge carriers. The Mn 3 O 4 -BBOI photocatalyst demonstrates stable performance, achieving 56–60 % NO removal efficiency under light irradiation, along with excellent suppression of toxic NO₂ byproducts. Introduction of a small amount of water vapor (5 vol%) increase the NO removal efficiency to the instantaneous maximum value of 65 %, although the inhibitory effect on NO₂ is slightly attenuated. Mechanistic studies reveal that superoxide radicals (•O 2 ⁻) serve as the primary active species responsible for the oxidation of NO to nitrite/nitrate (NO 2 ⁻/NO 3 ⁻), while hydroxyl radicals (•OH), generated via the reaction between •O 2 ⁻ and adsorbed H 2 O, contribute secondarily to the oxidation process.

Designing highly efficient iron-based catalysts with adsorption and degradation of pollutants is a great challenge in the field of environmental remediation. Herein, a dual strategy of anchoring-separation was adopted to prepare novel iron-based nitrogen doped porous carbon catalysts (Fe-pNC). Arginine was innovatively selected as the anchoring agent to coordinate with Fe 3+ and even form oligomers with glucose, which was conducive to the dispersion of iron species during high-temperature pyrolysis. Fe-pNC achieved high iron loading of 16.48 wt% and large specific surface area of 480.19 m 2 /g. The Freundlich model determined a maximum SMX adsorption capacity (Qm) of 82.38 mg/g for Fe-pNC, surpassing most of recently reported SMX adsorbents. Interestingly, even after multiple PMS regenerations, Fe-pNC still exhibited excellent adsorption performance. Surprisingly, Fe-pNC exhibited better adsorption performance at low temperature, achieving 90.58 % adsorption rate at 0 °C. More importantly, the Fe-pNC/PMS system achieved 99.11 % SMX removal in 15 min with a superior apparent rate constant (k obs ) of 0.54 min −1 . Of particular significance, Cl − markedly enhanced the catalytic efficacy of the Fe-pNC for SMX removal, remarkably enhancing the catalytic degradation performance even at high concentrations. Quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detections demonstrated that single-linear oxygen 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ) were the major reactive oxygen species (ROSs). This study provides a significant guidance into developing efficient iron-based catalysts for adsorption and removal of organic pollutants.

Halogen selection and facet engineering were effective strategies for catalyst optimization, however, their synergistic mechanism in enhancing photo-Fenton performance remained unclear. In this study, the effects of halogens (Br and I) and facets ({001}, {010} and {110}) on the photo-Fenton degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) by BiOX were systematically investigated. The results revealed that halogen selection and facet engineering enhanced the photo-Fenton performance by improving the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron ( e − ) and their activation capability toward oxidants. Among them, halogen selection (Br) played a dominant role in enhancing the degradation performance, while facet engineering ({010} facet) contributed secondary optimization. Experimental results demonstrated that in the presence of peroxydisulfate (PDS, 0.065 mM) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 , 0.065 mM), BiOBr exhibited superior photo-Fenton performance to BiOI on all facets. For the same halogen, the BiOX with the {010} facet (BiOX-010/vis/oxidant) outperformed BiOX-001/vis/oxidant and BiOX-110/vis/oxidant in degradation activity. Further analysis from the perspective of band structure and photoelectrochemical properties revealed that BiOBr enhanced photogenerated e − separation efficiency and reduction capacity by modulating its band structure. Work function calculations indicated that exposure of the {010} facet facilitated the migration of photogenerated e − through Br–Bi/Br–O–Bi bonds, reducing its interfacial work function (2.72 eV), thereby significantly improving interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Under this synergistic regulation strategy of halogen and facet, BiOBr-010 exhibited the strongest PDS adsorption affinity ( E ads = 2.78 kJ/mol), enabling BiOBr-010/vis/PDS to achieve excellent AMX degradation performance ( k obs = 0.028 min −1 ). This study elucidate the contributions and mechanisms of halogen and facet types to the photo-Fenton performance, providing design strategies for the development of efficient and stable photo-Fenton systems.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury represents a major global health concern, driven by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), which closely correlates with subsequent myocardial infarction and fibrosis. Combining ROS scavenging with ischemic myocardium revascularization holds therapeutic promise. However, developing multifunctional therapeutic agents that can simultaneously scavenge ROS and promote angiogenesis remains unreported. Herein, we propose MgSrCeAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets as a multifunctional ROS scavenger and angiogenesis promoter for efficient myocardial I/R injury treatment. MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets not only exhibit exceptional hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anions (·O 2 − ) scavenging capabilities, which is 1.78 times and 1.61 times that of CeO 2 , respectively, but also respond to the ischemia-induced acidic microenvironment to release angiogenic Sr 2+ with a concentration of 32.65 ppm (pH 5.0), which is conducive to efficient angiogenesis. Specifically, the ROS levels in I/R-injured myocardium decreased to 66.2% of its original value following intervention with MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets, while the vascular density in the peri-ischemic myocardium increased by approximately 3.6-fold. Ultimately, the infarcted myocardial area is reduced 60.9% compared to the group without MgSrCeAl-LDH intervention. Mechanistically, MgSrCeAl-LDH nanosheets alleviate myocardial infarction and fibrosis caused by I/R injury through activating PI3K/Akt pathway and inhibiting TGF-β pathway, ultimately improving cardiac function and inhibiting ventricular remodeling. Precious metals are critical to electronics and catalysis because of exceptional conductivity, corrosion resistance, and unique physicochemical properties. However, the surge in demand driven by the expansion of the electronics and automotive industries has intensified the environmental and economic pressures associated with the accumulation of precious metal waste. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for resource recovery; however, its dependence on toxic acetonitrile solvents limits industrial applicability. Here, we present a photocatalytic-assisted solvometallurgical approach employing ethylene glycol-a benign, low-volatility solvent-to achieve complete leaching of precious metals from various industrial waste catalysts within 10 min. Field-scale experiments conducted under solar irradiation processed 125 g of spent catalyst in a single batch, yielding 0.45 g of high-purity palladium (>99%). This approach expands the solvent scope for photocatalysis, eliminates the need for hazardous reagents, and facilitates solar-powered operation, thereby offering a practical and scalable pathway for sustainable precious metal recycling.

The effective dewatering of waste activated sludge (WAS) and the utilization of resources are crucial for the sustainable development of wastewater treatment plants. Ultrasonic (US) collaborative iron-carbon (Fe-C) activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupling system was constructed to investigate the transformation of physicochemical properties and explore the mechanisms during the cracking and oxidation of WAS. The ultrasonic enhanced Fe-C/PDS system, which exhibited excellent oxidation capacity under the conditions of PDS, Fe-C, and ultrasonic power levels at 0.12 g/g TS, 0.3 g/g TS, and 0.3 W/mL. The water content of the sludge cake was reduced to 61.71 %, while the specific resistance to filtration was lowered to 1.12 × 10 12 m/kg (decreased by 88.2 %). Furthermore, ultrasonic improved the WAS cracking capacity with a satisfying SCOD production (630.64 mg/L) and a dramatic reduction of 9.16 % in volatile solids. Compared to Fe-C/PDS, the addition of ultrasonic enhanced the leaching of Fe, released carbon source and promoted the formation of various reactive oxidative species to degrade bound EPS. The contribution of O 2 − and 1 O 2 was 37.00 % and 43.17 %, indicating the oxidation process of free radicals and non-free radicals in Fe-C/PDS/US system. Additionally, the concentration of short-chain fatty acids was increased by 96.7 %, which significantly accelerating the quality of carbon source suitable for recycling. The positive improvement of sludge physicochemical properties revealed the disintegration-degradation synergistic effect of the Fe-C/PDS/US systems. These findings provide a novel strategy for effective disposal and reduction in WAS while also offering valuable insights into resource utilization.

The development of efficient electrochemical coupling systems for persulfate activation is crucial for expanding the treatment of pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater. In this study, we present an electrically activated persulfate-coupled N-doped graphene membrane electrode system, which achieves complete (100 %) removal of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) within 90 min. Nitrogen doping significantly enhances the catalytic activity of graphene membrane electrodes for PMS activation, improving CTC degradation by 45 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) identified pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen as the dominant PMS-active sites. Free radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy elucidated the reaction mechanism. Under an external electric field, the N-doped graphene membrane electrode functions as an anode, triggering PMS activation and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), including SO 4 •- , •OH and 1 O 2 . Furthermore, high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was employed to analyze intermediate products and assess the toxicity of CTC. The system exhibited excellent pH adaptability and broad applicability for PPCPs removal. This innovative electrochemical coupling system with N-doped graphene membrane electrodes advances the prospects of electrochemical technology in water pollution control. Environmental Implication In this study, we propose an innovative “electrochemically activated persulfate coupled N-doped graphene membrane electrode system” strategy. Using this strategy, we successfully fabricated a graphene membrane electrode material with N-active sites for persulfate activation. The N-sites in this structure enhance the charge distribution, electronic density, and spin density of the graphene material, thereby facilitating the activation of persulfate. The electrode material not only exhibits facile synthesis, excellent activity, and high stability, but also demonstrates considerable promise for applications in the field of environmental remediation.
