Valorization of sugarcane bagasse xylan, an agricultural byproduct, for sustainable material design. • CXY–CS hydrogel fabricated via EDC/NHS-mediated covalent crosslinking between carboxymethyl xylan and chitosan. • The polysaccharide-based hydrogel effectively adsorbs three heavy metal ions: Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Zn(II). • A unique reduction-coordination mechanism is revealed for Cr(VI) removal, distinguishing it from typical cation adsorption. The development of high-performance adsorbents from agricultural waste is hindered by the limited solubility and the absence of functional groups in native polymers. To address these challenges, this study fabricated a novel hydrogel by crosslinking carboxymethylated xylan (CXY) with chitosan (CS) via an environmentally benign amidation reaction. A series of systematic batch adsorption experiments was performed at low concentrations (0–20 mg L −1 ) to investigate the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics. A series of high-concentration tests (500 mg L −1 ) was conducted to ascertain the maximum adsorption capacities and cyclic regeneration performance for Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cr(VI). The underlying mechanism was elucidated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption process exhibited conformance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, thereby indicating monolayer chemisorption. The thermodynamic parameters confirmed the spontaneity and exothermic nature of the process. In conditions of high concentration (500 mg L −1 ), the hydrogel exhibited noteworthy maximum adsorption capacities (Q max ) of 129.23, 123.24, and 126.19 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cr(VI), respectively, demonstrating over 85% adsorption efficiency following five regeneration cycles. Mechanistic analysis revealed a synergistic “reduction-coordination” pathway, while the highly toxic Cr(VI) undergoes unique surface reduction to less hazardous Cr(III). The integration of experimental and theoretical approaches in this study provides a systematic clarification of the adsorption performance and the dual-function “reduction-coordination” mechanism of the hydrogel toward multiple heavy metals. The study provides a robust scientific foundation for the development of sustainable, waste-derived materials for the remediation of complex heavy metal pollution. Covalent organic frameworks (COF) are deemed as disruptive membrane materials owing to their versatile functionalities, high stability and ordered nanochannels. However, the size mismatch between the COF intrinsic pore and gas molecules becomes a grand challenge when using COF membrane for carbon capture. Herein, we propose a new type of polymer-functionalized COF laminar membranes through grafting CO 2 -phlic polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer onto carboxylic acid COF (cCOF) laminar membranes. The cCOF nanosheets with high density of carboxyl groups are prepared via modified single phase solution method and then assembled to fabricate membranes. Further, the cCOF membranes are functionalized with PEI using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) coupling chemistry. The introduction of abundant amino groups from PEI afford the affinity of membranes toward CO 2 . Meanwhile, the graft of the PEI polymers reduces the defects or pinholes on the membrane surface. As a result, the PEI functionalized cCOF membranes exhibit a high CO 2 permeance of 1004 GPU and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 33.7, which reach the carbon capture target performance and show great prospect for treating real flue gas. Our approach of functionalizing cCOF membranes with tailored functionalities may inspire the design of molecule-selective COF membranes.

The cyclic carbonates as non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) precursors are usually prepared via CO 2 fixation under harsh conditions for a satisfactory conversion rate, which is energy-intensive. Herein, cyclic carbonate was prepared under ambient conditions with high purity and yield using a water-soluble ethyl-(N′,N′dimethylamino) propylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) to provide a favored industrialization method. The glycerol carbonate was reacted with a furan-based dicarboxylic acid using EDC to evolve cyclic carbonates, followed by the aminolysis with different chemical structural amines to produce bio-based NIPUs. The effects of the reaction parameters on the yield and purity of bis(cyclic carbonate) were investigated. The results showed that the synthesized bis(cyclic carbonate) have a purity of 99% and a yield of > 70%. The different structures of the diamines exhibited different reactivity and molecular weights in the order of multi-functional amine > linear amine > cyclic amine. All the synthesized furan-based NIPUs presented excellent thermal stability above 350 °C and glass transition temperature in the range of 51.9 °C to 99.6 °C. The result demonstrates the potential of this environmentally benign strategy to prepare high-performance bio-based NIPUs with interesting properties even for biomedical applications.

Bovine pancreatic lipase was immobilized onto N -succinyl-chitosan beads by using N -(3-dimethylaminopropyl)- N ′-ethylcarbodiimide (EDC)/ N -hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as the activating agent. The immobilized lipase was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy. The activity of the immobilized lipase obtained under the optimized immobilization conditions was found to reach 1,480 U/g, with enzyme activity recovery of 74.5%. Compared to the free lipase, thermal stability of the immobilized lipase was greatly improved. The reusability study indicated that the immobilized lipase retained 76.6% of its initial activity after being recycled five times. A preliminary study indicated that the prepared immobilized lipase can effectively enrich the polyunsaturated fatty acid in fish oil (increasing from 45.1 to 67.7%), of which the combined docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid contents increased from 16.3 to 27.1%. Practical applications To overcome the drawbacks of using free lipase, an effective method was developed by immobilization of lipase onto N -succinyl-chitosan beads using EDC/NHS as the activating agent. The immobilized lipase prepared by this method may find application in the enrichment of polyunsaturated fatty acids of fish oil.

Currently, protein-based hydrogels are widely applied in soft materials, tissue engineering and implantable scaffolds owing to their excellent biocompatibility, and degradability. However, most protein-based hydrogels are soft brittle. In this study, a ductile and mechanically enhanced bovine serum albumin (BSA) hydrogel is fabricated by soaking the a 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) induced BSA hydrogel in (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 solution. An EDC/NHS coupling reaction induce protein coupling reactions that cause the BSA skeleton to resemble architectural load-bearing walls, protecting the integrity of the hydrogel and preventing collapse. The effects of the BSA and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 concentrations on the hydrogel mechanics are evaluated, and the possible strengthening mechanism is discussed. Besides, the highly kosmotropic ions greatly enhance the hydrophobic interaction within BSA gels and dehydration effect and their mechanical properties were significantly enhanced. The various mechanical properties of hydrogels can be regulated over a large window by soaking hydrogels into various ions. And most of them can be washed away, maintaining high biocompatibility of the protein. Importantly, the protein hydrogels prepared by this strategy could also be modified as strain sensors. In a word, this work demonstrates a new, universal method to provide multi-functional, biocompatible, strength enhanced and regulable mechanical pure protein hydrogel, combining the Hofmeister effect with -NH 2 /-COOH association groups.

Ready-to-eat sea cucumbers (RSC) cannot be preserved at room temperature due to autolysis, which is closely related to the instability of collagen resulting from the disruption of hydrogen bonds. To investigate the protective effect ofN-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) cross-linking against disruption of hydrogen bonds and its role in stabilizing RSC quality at room temperature, this study designed comparative experiments involving EDC/NHS cross-linking treatments with varying sequences of hydrogen bonds disruption. The results indicated that EDC/NHS positively affects the stabilization of the collagen structure in RSC. The various quality parameters of both groups of RSC that underwent cross-linking treatment before and after hydrogen bonds disruption were significantly better than those of the control group, which only experienced the breaking of hydrogen bonds. Notably, the Eb group, which underwent EDC/NHS cross-linking treatment prior to the disruption of the hydrogen bonds network, yielded even more favorable results. Preliminary analyses of textural properties and moisture content suggested that EDC/NHS helps delay the deterioration of RSC quality. The levels of soluble components and carbonyl groups indicated that prior cross-linking treatment is more effective in mitigating collagen degradation and oxidation. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the reduction in ΔH for the Eb group was only 2.4%. Furthermore, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and circular dichroism spectroscopy, examined from the perspectives of secondary and tertiary structures respectively, indicated that the cross-linking mechanism of EDC/NHS involves the formation of a more robust network of amide bonds, thereby preventing the disruption of hydrogen bonds and enhancing collagen stability, enabling it to better resist the cleavage of hydrogen bonds due to urea. The scanning electron microscope and Van Gieson’s staining techniques offer a clearer illustration of this point from a microscopic perspective. Moreover, molecular docking simulations have indicated the cross-linking mechanism of EDC/NHS at the atomic level, thereby establishing a scientific foundation for the potential application and development of EDC/NHS in room-temperature storage technologies for RSC.

Ready-to-eat sea cucumbers (RSC) cannot be preserved at room temperature due to severe autolysis. This study systematically examined the quality-preserving effects of tea polyphenol (TP) and N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS), two cross-linking treatments, on RSC during storage at room temperature. The results demonstrated that both cross-linking treatments significantly delayed the deterioration of quality and exhibited antimicrobial effects, accompanied by enhanced the structural and thermal stability of collagen in RSC. Microstructural analysis further confirmed that TP and EDC/NHS strengthened the collagen fibers. Molecular docking simulations suggested that TP interacts with collagen primarily through non-covalent binding, whereas EDC/NHS achieves positional localization via electrostatic attraction, subsequently reinforcing the collagen structure through covalent amide bonds. Both strategies effectively slowed the deterioration of RSC during storage at room temperature, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for the development of advanced preservation technologies for RSC.

Despite the clinical prevalence of various bone defect repair materials, a full understanding of their influence on bone repair and regeneration remains elusive. This study focuses on poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogels, popular 2D model substrates, which have regulable mechanical properties within physiological. However, their bio-inert nature requires surface biofunctionalization to enhance cell-material interactions and facilitate the study of bone repair mechanisms. We utilized PAAm hydrogels of varying stiffness (18, 76 and 295 kPa), employed sulfosuccinimidyl-6-(4′-azido-2′-nitropheny-lamino) hexanoate (sulfo-SANPAH) and N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimidyl acrylate (EDC/NHS) as crosslinkers, and cultured macrophages, endothelial cells, and bone mesenchymal stem cells on these hydrogels. Our findings indicated that sulfo-SANPAH's crosslinking efficiency surpassed that of EDC/NHS, irrespective of pore size and stiffness. Importantly, we observed that the stiffness and surface biofunctionalization method of hydrogels significantly impacted cell adhesion and proliferation. The collagen-modified hydrogels by EDC/NHS strategy failed to support the normal biological behavior of bone mesenchymal stem cells and hindered endothelial cell spreading. In contrast, these modified hydrogels by the sulfo-SANPAH method showed good cytocompatibility with the three types of cells. This study underscores the critical role of appropriate conjugation strategies for PAAm hydrogels, providing valuable insights for hydrogel surface modification in bone repair and regeneration research.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a redox cofactor that has been shown to have strong antioxidant capacity and neuroprotective effects and has been extensively studied in recent years. However, PQQ small molecule compounds have poorly stability and low bioavailability in vivo, making it difficult to exert drug activity for long periods of time. In this study, we employed the EDC/NHS method to graft PQQ onto carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) to improve the utilization of PQQ. The obtained PQQ-g-CMCS product was a water-soluble copolymer, and the grafting rate could be controlled by adjusting the pH and the raw material feeding ratio. The PQQ-g-CMCS samples were characterized using FT-IR, UR-Vis, NMR, and XRD spectroscopy, suggesting a conjugation reaction between the amino groups of CMCS and the carboxyl groups of PQQ. Specifically, the in vitro antioxidant experiments showed that the Fe2+ chelating activity of the grafted copolymer was significantly enhanced. In addition, the PQQ-g-CMCS copolymer also exhibited good biocompatibility and significant protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative damage in SH-SY5Y cells. These results preliminarily indicate that PQQ-g-CMCS may be a promising antioxidant material for applications such as drug release and tissue engineering.

The presence of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in water and wastewater poses potential risks on aquatic environment and human health. Conventional polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane showed poor rejection against EDCs due to unfavorable hydrophobic interaction. In this study, we introduced MoS 2 nanosheets (NS) to PA NF membrane by pre-deposition before the interfacial polymerization process, creating hydrophilic surface and nanochannels in the PA rejection layer to enhance removal of hydrophobic EDCs from wastewater. Results showed that the MoS 2 NS intercalated membrane simultaneously enhanced water permeance and EDCs rejection, with water/EDC selectivity nearly 6 times larger compared to the control. The enhanced EDC rejection was primarily attributed to the suppressed hydrophobic interaction between membrane surface and hydrophobic EDCs, as well as the selective effect by the MoS 2 NS-induced nanochannels. Further calculation based on the solution-diffusion theory indicated that for MoS 2 NS intercalated membranes the selective nanochannels played a more important role than the hydrophilic surface in impeding the transport of EDCs across the PA layer. The feasibility of the MoS 2 NS intercalated PA membrane for EDC removal was also verified using EDC-contaminated real wastewater . The results of this work highlight the potential of using the designed NF membranes for efficient removal of targeted organic micropollutants from water and wastewater.

In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the research of injectable hydrogel for internal tissue healing. However, the therapeutic outcome is usually limited when the hydrogel is used for the treatment of gastric perforation due to the high acidic gastric juice and violent deformation of the gastric wall. Regarding these challenges, we proposed an ionic nano-reservoir (INR)-based dual-network hydrogel, which has excellent adhesion and mechanical properties, and can be easily applied to the perforation site to block the perforation while promoting tissue repairing. The results showed that the first network made of polyacrylamide had cross-linked on the stomach tissue within 5 s under blue light, and enhanced the adhesion performance through mechanical interlock. The nano-hydroxyapatite acted as ionic INR, which can gradually release Ca2+ under acid environments to form the second network with sodium alginate and inhibit the swelling of hydrogel in gastric juice. Meanwhile, the adhesion was further enhanced through amide covalent bonds at the hydrogel-tissue interface with the presence of 1- ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS). The dual network hydrogels obtained by the INR strategy could be employed as a potential therapeutic option for gastric perforation and other similar biomedical prolems.

Enhancing hydrophobic bioactives' bioaccessibility remains challenging in functional foods due to instability and insufficient controlled-release ability in conventional protein-polysaccharide carriers. We pioneer a new interaction model by covalently grafting corn stover cellulose nanofibers (CNF) with Zein using N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), creating conjugates with gradient grafting degrees (CNF/Zein 0.5, CNF/Zein 1, and CNF/Zein 2). Excitingly, compared to the non-covalent complex (CNF-Zein), conjugates exhibited a stable network-like microstructure, lower crystallinity, and enhanced thermal stability. Furthermore, the conjugates exhibited excellent amphiphilicity, forming denser and more stable emulsions. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) revealed a dual stabilization mechanism of “interface adsorption-network encapsulation”. Additionally, CNF/Zein-stabilized emulsions demonstrated controlled quercetin release and improved bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion tests, with the highest grafted CNF/Zein 2 showing 43.65 % bioaccessibility. This study first demonstrates the effectiveness of the EDC/NHS technique in alcohol-solution systems, providing novel strategies for conjugate design and lipophilic nutraceutical delivery.
