Carbon quantum dots activated metal organic frameworks for selective detection of Cu(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ)

Lu Fan,Yingxi Wang,Ling Li,Jianggang Zhou

In this study, 2-amino-terephthalic acid was designed for construction of MOFs , and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were designed to activate the Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to be used as fluorescent sensor for selectively detection for Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ , enhancing the fluorescence to an “on” state by the hybrid with CQDs in the MOFs as activating agent; quenching the fluorescence to an “off” state by removal of CQDs through the metal competitive coordination substitution strategy. Using this strategy, the prepared CQDs/MOFs material can be used as a fluorescence “on-off” probe for highly sensitive detection of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous solution. It was found that the LOD of CQDs/MOFs for sensing Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ were 2.3 ppb and 1.3 ppb, respectively. It was proved that the CQDs/MOFs has little cytotoxicity to 4T-1 cells, indicating the potential application in the detection for Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ ions in cells.

Comparative analysis of para-nitrophenol degradation and DBPs formation in the UV/chlor(am)ine/Fe(Ⅲ) systems

Qing Wang,Lin Deng,Changbo Zhang,Rajendra Prasad Singh,Gongde Wu

Para-nitrophenol (PNP), a highly toxic compound widely detected in water bodies, was investigated as the target contaminant during the UV/chlor(am)ine/Fe(III) processes to evaluate its degradation kinetics model, and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation and pathways. The incorporation of Fe(III) introduced a oxidation-reduction cycle of Fe(II) and Fe(III), which can generate additional hydroxyl radicals, reactive chlorine species, and reactive nitrogen species, thereby accelerating PNP degradation by 21.85 % in the UV/chlorine system and 31.08 % in the UV/chloramine system. PNP degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with observed rate constants ( k obs ) calculated as 0.0938 and 0.0604 min −1 , in the UV/chlorine/Fe(III) and UV/chloramine/Fe(III) systems, respectively. Radical quenching experiments confirmed the dominant reactive species in each system, supporting the mechanistic interpretation. In the UV/chlorine/Fe(III) system, DBP yields ranked as follows: Halonitromethanes (HNMs) > trihalomethanes (THMs) > haloacetamides (HAcAms) > haloacetonitriles (HANs), while the order was HNMs > THMs > HANs > HAcAms, in the UV/chloramine/Fe(III) system. Factors influencing DBP formation, including Fe(III) dosage, initial pH, and chlor(am)ine dosage, were systematically investigated. The cytotoxicity index (CTI) contributions of each DBP in the UV/chlor(am)ine/Fe(III) systems were ranked as follows: HNMs > HANs > THMs > HAcAms. Based on detected transformation products (TPs) and radical contribution analysis, plausible pathways for PNP transformation and DBPs formation were proposed. These findings provide valuable insights into PNP degradation behavior and the mechanisms of DBPs formation in the UV/chlor(am)ine/Fe(III) systems, supporting their future practical applications.

Fe(Ⅲ)-doped ZnIn2S4-modified graphene oxide in-situ for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in simulated sunlight

Ying Zeng,Sitong Liu,Guopeng Zhu,Xiutao Yang,Hongwen Yu

To improve the efficiency of photocatalytic reactions, it is important to understand how to achieve fast directional migration and separation of photogenerated carriers at the interface. Here, Fe(III)-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS)-coated graphene oxide (GO) composite (GZF) was in-situ prepared via the low-temperature water bath method. Ultrathin Fe(III)-doped ZIS nanosheets were uniformly grown upright on the GO surface. The prepared samples were studied via, such as, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance. Compared with ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS)-coated graphene oxide (GZ), the GZF exhibit a 2.26-fold increase in the photocatalytic degradation performance of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in simulated sunlight. Through density functional theory calculations, found that Fe(III) doping introduces new energy levels into ZIS, which effectively narrow its bandgap and thus enhance its light absorption efficiency. It was found that h + , ·O 2 − , and 1 O 2 were the major reactive oxygen species involved in the photocatalysis, and the effect of pH on the catalytic degradation of TCH was examined. Electron spin resonance and density functional theory results indicate that Fe(III) acts as an electron trap in the ZIS structure to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which in turn enhances the photocatalytic efficiency of GZF-25.

Fe(Ⅲ)-Oxidized Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets as a Sensitive Fluorescent Sensor for Detection and Imaging of Fluoride Ions

Hao Liu,Huan Wang,Lu Zhang,Yanjuan Sang,Fang Pu,Jinsong Ren,Xiaogang Qu

Since excess fluoride ions may lead to a severe health hazard, it is imperative to design a facile and sensitive sensor to detect it in both environmental and biological systems. The reported methods are always subjected to some limits, hampering their practical application. Herein, a two-dimensional turn-on fluorescent sensor, Fe 3+ -integrated oxidized graphitic-phase carbon nitride nanosheets (Fe-g-CNO), was synthesized via a facile and green method for sensitive detection of fluoride ions. The interactions between the C-N/C = N moieties of oxidized graphitic-phase carbon nitride (g-CNO) and Fe 3+ caused fluorescence quenching of g-CNO. Upon addition of F- ions, the fluorescence was recovered through the formation of complex of Fe 3+ and F-. The limit of detection of the sensor was 1 × 10 -6 M. Furthermore, this probe could be used as an imaging agent of fluoride ions in living cells and teeth for diagnosis of dental fluorosis. The work provides a safe and efficient platform for further environmental and biomedical uses.

A novel green flotation approach: mechanism and simulation of Fe(Ⅲ)-enhanced small molecule acid for fluorite-calcite separation

Zhelin Liu,Dan Liu,Zhipeng Liu,Mingyan An,Luyi Xu,Bingduo Xing,Shuming Wen

Using Fe 3+ enhanced the inhibitory effect of MA on calcite. • Fe 3+ adsorbs on calcite CO 3 2– sites, providing new sites for MA adsorption. • A novel, efficient, and eco-friendly inhibitor based on the Fe–MA complex was proposed. Due to the similar surface properties of fluorite and calcite, selective adsorption of collectors remains a challenge in their separation. In this study, a novel composite inhibition system using Fe 3+ -enhanced Malic acid (MA) was developed to selectively suppress calcite by regulating interface coordination interactions. A systematic investigation was conducted through flotation tests, contact angle measurements, molecular dynamics simulations, and surface analysis (FTIR, ToF-SIMS, XPS). Micro-flotation results showed that the recovery of calcite decreased from 64.67% to 8.75% with the addition of Fe 3+ , while the fluorite recovery remained above 92%, indicating significant enhancement in selectivity. Contact angle and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the Fe–MA complexes markedly increased the hydrophilicity of calcite surfaces. FTIR and ToF-SIMS confirmed the presence of carboxyl groups (–COOH) and iron species (FeO – , FeOH – ) on calcite surfaces, indicating Fe–MA complex adsorption. XPS and DFT results demonstrated that MA adsorbs onto calcite via weak Ca–O bonds, and Fe promotes multi-site adsorption through Fe–O bonds, strengthening the adsorption and enhancing separation efficiency. This study highlights a cooperative coordination mechanism between metal ions and small organic acids, offering a novel strategy for designing low-dose, highly selective green inhibitors for calcium minerals.

Nondestructive grafting of PEI on aramid fiber surface through the coordination of Fe (Ⅲ) to enhance composite interfacial properties

Zheng Cheng,Can Chen,Jieyang Huang,Teng Chen,Yang Liu,Xiangyang Liu

The nondestructive functionalization of aramid fiber is an important research direction. In this study, a kind of benzimidazole-contained aramid fiber, Poly- p -phenylene-benzimidazole-terephthalamide (PBIA) fiber, was modified by the coordination of benzimidazole unit in fiber structure with Fe 3+ . Further, the coordinatively unsaturated sites of Fe 3+ endow the modified fiber with active sites for the grafting of PEI. Model compound of PBIA unit, PBA, was utilized to confirm the whole process of modification. In comparison with that of the untreated fiber, the IFSS value of fiber with PEI grafted has an increase by 47%, owing to the chemical bond formed on the fiber/epoxy interface and the better wettability of resin to fiber. In all, the study presents a nondestructive functionalization of aramid fiber and can be employed in the modification of other benzimidazole-contained substrates.

Rapid, visual and autocatalytic quantifying Ag(I) and Fe(Ⅲ) by ratiometric fluorescence sensor of N, Si, S-GQDs/OPD

Rui Zhou,Miao Dong,Yiwei Wu

N, Si, S co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, Si, S-GQDs) were synthesized from waste toner and glutathione (GSH) via a one-pot hydrothermal method. Combined with o-phenylenediamine (OPD), a rapid, visual, and autocatalytic ratiometric fluorescence sensor of N, Si, S-GQDs/OPD was fabricated for detecting Ag(I) and Fe(III) ions by producing 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD) under pH 8, which emits yellow fluorescence at 560 nm while quenching the blue fluorescence of N, Si, S-GQDs at 440 nm due to an inner filter effect. With the increase of Ag(I)/Fe(III), the blue fluorescence of N, Si, S-GQDs at 440 nm was gradually weakened, along with the enhancement of yellow fluorescence at 560 nm. Hence, this color change from blue to yellow under UV light enables semi-quantitative visual detection. The sensor demonstrates high sensitivity with detection limits of 0.016 µg mL −1 for Ag(I) and 0.010 µg mL −1 for Fe(III), and it successfully detects these ions in lake and tap water without pretreatment. The autocatalytic mechanism involves Ag(I) and Fe(III) reduction to Ag nanoparticles and Fe(II), respectively, which further catalyze the reaction, enhancing selectivity and efficiency. The method is cost-effective, simple, and suitable for on-site environmental monitoring.

High-density, high-activity and high-spin atomic Fe (Ⅲ) sites on ZIF-8-derived microporous carbon for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Cheng Zhou,Lina Wang,Junting Sun,Hongbo Wu,Jian Zhang,Zhong Li

Enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) efficiency relies heavily on designing non-noble metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) with high-density and high-activity sites. For efficient ORR, Fe single atoms are precisely regulated and embedded into porous concave carbon derived from ZIF-8 in this work. ORR performance is significantly improved by the catalyst's concave design and microporous features, which optimize mass transfer and expose more active sites. Furthermore, the high-density, high-activity, and high-spin Fe (III) sites inside the material help to explain the increased intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Due to its unique carrier structure and iron site coordination, this catalyst exhibits outstanding ORR activity in a 0.1 M KOH solution. Additionally, zinc-air batteries constructed with this catalyst display a maximum peak power density of 151 mW cm −2 and a high specific capacity of 818 mAh g Zn −1 , outperforming Pt/C-based systems. This study presents a method for precursor treatment to efficiently and conveniently synthesize microporous carbon-based ORR SACs, aiming to advance ORR catalyst design.

Electrochemical sensor based on N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD nanomaterials: Application to simultaneous selective determination of Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) irons released from iron supplement in simulated gastric fluid

Xuemei Ma,Jiayi Yu,Lin Wei,Qian Zhao,Liyong Ren,Zhiyong Hu

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag–O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).
