WS2 as highly active co-catalyst for the regeneration of Fe(II) in the advanced oxidation processes

Haopeng Luo,Xin Zhou,Xiaojie Guo,Zhiyong Fang,Quanyuan Chen,Juan Zhou

The greatest constraint in the advanced oxidation processes involved Fe(II)/PMS was the low utilization of Fe(II) and PMS. In the present study, the co-catalytic effect of WS 2 on the Fe(II)/PMS system for the degradation of organics was investigated. In the presence of WS 2 , Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) during the reaction and resulted in improved decomposition of PMS as well as the degradation of 4-chloriphenol (4-CP). The decomposition rate of PMS and degradation efficiency of 4-CP were 10% and 25% in the Fe(II)/PMS process, while the efficiencies respectively increased to 99% and 100% in the WS 2 assisted Fe(II)/PMS system. The degradation of 4-CP was completed via the free radical pathway and SO 4 • - played a more important role than other active species. Low concentration of inorganic ions such as Cl − and HCO 3 − exhibited irrelevant effect while humic acid showed significant suppression on the WS 2 /Fe(II)/PMS system. Additionally, characterization and recycle results implied that WS 2 maintained a good stability during the co-catalytic processes.

Effect of surfactants on the removal of nitrobenzene by Fe-bearing montmorillonite/Fe(II)

Jin Huang,Jie Cao,Ni Tu,Huaping Dong,Jianfa Li,Jianxin Shou,Yimin Li

Nonionic and anionic surfactants often occur in anaerobic environments, but their roles in the removal of organic contaminants by Fe-bearing mineral/Fe(II) have not been determined. In this study, batch experiments were performed to investigate the effects of a nonionic surfactant (TX-100) and an anionic surfactant (SDBS) on the removal of nitrobenzene (NB) by Fe-bearing montmorillonite (FM)/Fe(II). Mössbauer spectrum and XPS were applied to analyze the edge surface bound Fe(II) and secondary minerals formed on FM. The contribution of surfactant to the enrichment of NB on FM was studied. The results showed that TX-100 and SDBS had opposite effects on the removal of NB by FM/Fe(II) at neutral pH. The presence of TX-100 improved the removal efficiency of NB from 36.4% to 70.0%, and increased the initial removal rate by 1.7 times. This enhancement effect was mainly attributed to the formation of more active edge surface bound Fe(II) that can reduce more NB to aniline. Formation of more magnetite on FM and selective enrichment of NB on the reactive surface also contributed to the removal of NB. In contrast, the presence of SDBS reduced the amount of edge surface bound Fe(II) via formation of SDBS-Fe(II) complex, which decreased the removal efficiency of NB.

Enhanced degradation of benzene by percarbonate activated with Fe(II)-glutamate complex

Fu Xiaori,Gu Xiaogang,Lu Shuguang,Miao Zhouwei,Xu Minhui,Zhang Xiang,Danish Muhammad,Cui Hang,Farooq Usman,Qiu Zhaofu,Sui Qian

Effective degradation of benzene was achieved in sodium percarbonate (SPC)/Fe(II)-Glu system. The presence of glutamate (Glu) could enhance the regeneration of Fe(III) to Fe(II), which ensures the benzene degradation efficiency at wider pH range and eliminate the influence of HCO 3 − in low concentration. Meanwhile, the significant scavenging effects of high HCO 3 − concentration could also be overcome by increasing the Glu/SPC/Fe(II)/benzene molar ratio. Free radical probe compound tests, free radical scavenger tests, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to explore the reaction mechanism for benzene degradation, in which hydroxyl radical (HO•) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 •− ) were confirmed as the predominant species responsible for benzene degradation. In addition, the results obtained in actual groundwater test strongly indicated that SPC/Fe(II)-Glu system is applicable for the remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater in practice.

Bicarbonate ions enhanced surface Fe(II) regeneration and peroxymonosulfate activation on stainless-steel scrubber cathode for BPA degradation

Danni Deng,Rong Chen,Qianqian Zhong,Binbin Xiong,Jia Deng,Na Zhang,Shiwei Xie

Bicarbonate ions (HCO 3 − ), commonly present in natural water sources, exert complex influences on peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This study investigates the role of HCO 3 − in a novel electrochemical system using a stainless-steel scrubber cathode (SSSC) for PMS activation. The buffering effect of HCO 3 − shifts the dominant Fe(II) species from dissolved Fe 2+ ions to surface-bound Fe(II) (≡Fe(II)) within the HCO 3 − /PMS/SSSC system. Furthermore, HCO 3 − promotes ≡Fe(II)/≡Fe(III) redox cycling on the SSSC surface. These synergistic effects significantly enhance PMS activation, generating singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and Fe IV O as the primary oxidants responsible for BPA degradation. Identification of degradation intermediates elucidated two dominant pathways: hydroxylation and radical coupling. Toxicity assessment of these intermediates confirmed reduced environmental risks. The SSSC exhibited long-term stability and effective performance in real water matrices, demonstrating its practical applicability.

Investigation on the role of ·OH for BPA removal in coastal sediments: The important mediation of low reactivity Fe(II)

Jingyuan Yue,Xiaojin Hu,Huijun Xie,Zhen Hu,Haiming Wu,Jian Zhang,Bo Sun,Lushan Wang

Bisphenol A (BPA) in seawater tends to be deposited in coastal sediments. However, its degradation under tidal oscillations has not been explored comprehensively. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) can be generated through Fe cycling under redox oscillations, which have a strong oxidizing capacity. This study focused on the contribution of Fe-mediated production of ·OH in BPA degradation under darkness. The removal of BPA was investigated by reoxygenating six natural coastal sediments, and three redox cycles were applied to prove the sustainability of the process. The importance of low reactivity Fe(II) in the production of ·OH was investigated, specifically, Fe(II) with carbonate and Fe(II) within goethite, hematite and magnetite. The degradation efficiency of BPA during reoxygenation of sediments was 76.78–94.82%, and the contribution of ·OH ranged from 36.74% to 74.51%. The path coefficient of ·OH on BPA degradation reached 0.6985 and the indirect effect of low reactivity Fe(II) on BPA degradation by mediating ·OH production reached 0.5240 obtained via partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). This study emphasizes the importance of low reactivity Fe(II) in ·OH production and provides a new perspective for the role of tidal-induced ·OH on the fate of refractory organic pollutants under darkness.

The activation mechanism of Fe(II) ion-modified cassiterite surface to promote salicylhydroxamic acid adsorption

Yang Cao,Xian Xie,Xiong Tong,Dongxia Feng,Jinfang Lv,Yumeng Chen,Qiang Song

This paper systematically analyzed the effects of Fe(II) ions on the cassiterite surface to promote the adsorption of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA). The interaction behavior and mechanisms re investigated using micro-flotation experiments, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The micro-flotation tests revealed that the Fe(II) ions had a strong activation effect on the cassiterite, and the recovery reached the maximum at pH values of 7–8. The results of the adsorption experiment showed that the adsorption capacity of SHA on the mineral surface significantly improved after Fe (II) ion activation; this result was confirmed by the zeta potential test. In addition, the zeta potential results indicated that the positively charged Fe species absorbed on the cassiterite surface led to positive changes in the mineral surface potential and an increase in the number of active sites, thereby increasing the SHA adsorption. The XPS and FTIR results demonstrated that the Fe(II) ions activated the cassiterite through the interaction of terminal oxygen atoms with Fe species on the cassiterite surfaces, and redox reactions and displacement reactions occurred between Fe 2+ and Sn 4+ . SHA was chemisorbed on the cassiterite surface, allowing the anions to react readily with the Fe species to form Fe-SHA complexes. Therefore, the Fe(II) ion-activated cassiterite surfaces enhanced the strength and stability of the SHA chemisorption. Based on the results, an adsorption model of the Fe(II) ion-activated cassiterite surface in the SHA system was established.

Enhanced degradation of benzene in aqueous solution by sodium percarbonate activated with chelated-Fe(II)

Xiaori Fu,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Minhui Xu,Zhouwei Miao,Xiang Zhang,Yacong Zhang,Yunfei Xue,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

In this study, the application of sodium percarbonate (SPC) catalyzed by various chelated-Fe(II) to stimulate the degradation of benzene in groundwater remediation was investigated. Effective oxidation of benzene was achieved in CIT/SPC/Fe(II) and OA/SPC/Fe(II) systems. The reaction mechanism for benzene degradation in CIT/SPC/Fe(II) and OA/SPC/Fe(II) systems was elucidated by free radical probe compound tests, free radical scavenger tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. And hydroxyl radical (HO ) and superoxide anion radical ( O 2 - ) were confirmed as the predominant species responsible for benzene degradation. Besides, the effects of various factors, such as the solution characteristics including the presence of anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − ), natural organic materials (NOM), and the initial solution pH on benzene degradation were also evaluated. The influences caused by SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , Cl − and NOM were negligible, but HCO 3 − anion had a slightly inhibitive effect in low concentration (1   mM) and an apparently inhibitive effect in high concentration (10–100   mM). However, the additions of CIT and OA eliminated the adverse influence of HCO 3 − and ensured a high benzene degradation efficiency at wider pH range. Finally, results obtained in actual groundwater test strongly demonstrated that Fe(II)-CIT and Fe(II)-OA catalyzed SPC systems are applicable for the remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater in practice.

Strongly reducing NaHS regenerates Fe(II)EDTA for efficient NO removal with high cycling performance under high oxygen conditions

Liwei Ma,Shihua Zheng,Guoqiang Li,Xuejun Wang,Kangdi Chen,Guojie Zhang

Fe(II)EDTA can remove NO efficiently, but it has not been industrially applied. This is because the oxygen present in the flue gas will oxidize Fe(II)EDTA and Fe(II)EDTA-NO to Fe(III)EDTA and deactivate them. In order to solve this problem, this paper innovatively proposes to use NaHS to reduce Fe(III) EDTA, because NaHS has high reducing ability and low price. Therefore, a series of experimental conditions were explored in order to obtain the best reaction setup. The results indicate that increasing the concentrations of NaHS, temperature, and pH enhances the rate of NaHS reduction. The mechanism of the increase in reduction rate was studied in depth using potentiometric titration. It was found that an increase in OH - concentration will generate S 8 precipitate, which is beneficial to the forward progress of the reaction and promotes the large-scale production of the active component Fe 2+ . Oxygen is an inevitable factor in actual flue gas, so this study innovatively proposed a kinetic model under aerobic conditions and used this model to predict the trend of Fe(III)EDTA reduction by NaHS. On this basis, NO removal experiments were conducted under high oxygen conditions. After 15 cycles, the reduction performance of NaHS was still very high, and the NO removal rate was higher than 70%. The reason for this phenomenon is that the stabilizer exists in a form that is conducive to the removal of NO by the active component Fe 2+ . Therefore, this study provides theoretical guidance for promoting the industrial application of Fe(II) EDTA technology for NO removal.

Importance of reagent addition order in contaminant degradation in an Fe(II)/PMS system

Ying Huang,Zhaohui Wang,Changling Fang,Wenqian Liu,Xiaoyi Lou,Jianshe Liu

Addition order of reagents in the Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation process was investigated by varying the concentration of Fe(II), the Fe(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) molar ratio and stepwise addition of Fe(II) and PMS. The importance of addition order of reagents was confirmed and an order of Fe(II)–PMS to improve the oxidation efficiency was recommended.

Visual colorimetric detection of triacetone triperoxide based on a Fe(II)-promoted thermal decomposition process

Guihua Zhang,Xinyi Zou,Hua Li,Yi He

Triacetone triperoxide (TATP) explosives, a popular choice for terrorists, have been used in many violent terrorist attacks all over the world. However, simple, rapid, and on-site detection methods of TATP are still lacking. Herein, we present a visual colorimetric method for on-site and rapid detection of TATP based on a Fe(II)-promoted thermal decomposition process of TATP. We discovered that TATP can be decomposed into H2O2 under heating conditions, and it reacts with Fe2+ to produce hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and Fe3+via the Fenton reaction. The resulting ˙OH and Fe3+ further oxidize colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a yellow oxidized product (oxTMB). These reaction processes remarkably promote the chemical equilibrium shift and decrease the activation energy. Using the TATP-Fe2+-TMB ternary chromogenic system, the present colorimetric assay for TATP shows a dynamic range of 0.5–30 μM with a low detection limit of 0.12 μM. Additionally, common substances (e.g., inorganic salts, small organic substances, and polymers) do not interfere with TATP detection. This assay can be used for analyzing TATP in real water and camouflage samples. Furthermore, a test-paper-based method was also successfully developed for visual, rapid and on-site detection of TATP.

Removal of 6PPD-quinone by Fe(II)-GLDA complex-activated periodate under neutral conditions

Yiyang Lin,Tao Lin,Han Chen,Junding Yin

The effect of N , N -bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic acid (GLDA) on the removal of organic pollutants by Fe(II)-mediated periodate (PI) advanced oxidation process at neutral pH was investigated, in which N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N ′-phenyl- p -phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) was used as the model pollutant. The results showed that the Fe(II)-GLDA complex formed by mixing GLDA with Fe(II) in a 1:1 ratio reacted with PI can degrade 6PPD-Q effectively. The presence of GLDA alters the redox potential of Fe(II)/Fe(III), which allows for a better utilization of Fe(II) under the synergistic effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Based on quenching experiments, sulfoxide probe transformation and electron spin resonance (ESR) signals, the reactive species that play a major role in this process are Fe IV O and IO 3 . The degradation products of 6PPD-Q were detected by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and two possible degradation pathways were proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The toxicity of 6PPD-Q was found to be effectively reduced after degradation by Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) software analysis and zebrafish experiments. This study provides some fundamental insights for the removal of organic pollutants by GLDA-enhanced Fe(II)/PI system under neutral conditions.

Insights into bromate reduction by Fe(II): Multiple radicals generation and carbamazepine oxidation

Cong Pan,Libin Fu,Fenna Lide,Yaobin Ding,Chengjun Wang,Jia Huang,Shaobin Wang

Reduction of bromate (BrO 3 − ) by various technologies has been extensively investigated, while the fate of oxygen and bromine atoms in BrO 3 − in these processes has been largely ignored. In this study, reduction of BrO 3 − by Fe(II) ions was investigated under various conditions via electron spin resonance (ESR), laser flash photolysis (LFP), probe of phenol and quenching experiments. It was found that reduction of BrO 3 − by Fe(II) ions produced HO•, O 2 • − and reactive bromine species (eg., Br• and Br 2 • − ). HO• and O 2 • − were generated from release of one/two oxygen atoms in BrO 3 − and its reduction intermediates (BrO 2 − and BrO − ) at one time, while Br• and Br 2 • − were generated from activation of hypobromous acid by Fe(II) and reactions of HO• with formed Br − . Due to the formation of these reactive species, the tested ten organic pollutants with diverse structures can be efficiently degraded, which including carbamazepine (CBZ), ibuprofen, phenol, benzoic acid, paracetamol, bisphenol a, 4-chlorophenol, oxcarbazepine, diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole. CBZ degradation intermediates by BrO 3 − /Fe(II) system were specially identified by liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS), and three pathways of hydroxylation/nitrosylation, ring contraction-amine cleavage and bromination for CBZ degradation were proposed accordingly. This study might shed new fundamental insights to bromate reduction and its implication for transformation of co-existed organic pollutants.
