3D interconnected hierarchical porous N-doped carbon constructed by flake-like nanostructure with Fe/Fe3C for efficient oxygen reduction reaction and supercapacitor

Guoning Li,Jiajun Zhang,Weisong Li,Kai Fan,Chunjian Xu

Hierarchical porous N-doped carbon with Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles, high content of N dopants (10.51 wt%), and a 3D interconnected porous architecture constructed by flake-like nanostructure was facilely prepared by carbonization of a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a self-sacrificing template and potassium ferricyanide (PF) as a multifunctional iron precursor. The unique porous structure can offer a continuous pathway for electron transfer and shorten the mass transfer pathway, which contribute to both an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a supercapacitor. The influence of the carbonization temperature and iron content on the performance of ORR and supercapacitor was investigated. The as-prepared composites carbonized at 800 °C (Fe-CZIF-800-10) displayed comparable ORR activity with Pt/C in alkaline media as well as excellent long-term stability, superb methanol tolerance, and appreciable onset potential in acid media. Moreover, Fe-CZIF-800-10 exhibited excellent capacity of 246 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and stability in 6 M KOH. This report provides a facile approach to prepare hierarchical porous Fe/N-doped carbon as a promising electrode material for both fuel cell and supercapacitor applications.

Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles loaded on Fe/N-doped graphene as an efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for degradation of organic pollutants

Xiaoqin Huang,Yanli Niu,Weihua Hu

Heterogeneous Fenton catalyst with high activity and excellent durability is highly demanded for efficient removal of organic pollutants via well-known Fenton reaction. In this work Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles loaded on iron/nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe/Fe 3 C @ Fe/N-Graphene) were synthesized via spontaneous oxidative polymerization of dopamine (DA) on graphene oxide (GO) surface in the presence of iron (III) chloride, followed by thermal annealing. The Fenton catalytic performance of as-prepared Fe/Fe 3 C @ Fe/N-Graphene was evaluated by degrading rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G) as a model organic pollutant. It is found that as-prepared catalyst demonstrates good activity with a rate constant of 0.080   min −1 under optimal hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) concentration and catalyst dosage. Moreover, its catalytic activity shows negligible decrease even after 13 successive cycles, exhibiting excellent catalytic durability. The possible mechanism behind the improved Fenton catalytic activity and durability was further discussed.

Carbon nanotubes cross-linked Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and Fe single atoms as high-efficiency bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Zhiwen Xu,Lanlu Lu,Weiwei Chen,Fei Yang,Guimei Liu,Yan Sun,Xiaoyi Qiu,M. Danny Gu,Ping Gao,Dong Su,Minhua Shao

Although zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have made great progress in recent years, there still a great challenge to develop low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability. Herein, we report a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst consisting of ZIF-derived carbon-anchored Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles and Fe single atoms, which are crosslinked by carbon nanotubes (denoted as CNT@Fe/Fe 3 C||FeNC). Benefiting from the synergetic effect of Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles, Fe-N 4 active sites, and the 3D interpenetrating network structure, CNT@Fe/Fe 3 C||FeNC shows excellent bifunctional catalytic activities with a low ΔE of 0.671 V. Furthermore, the assembled rechargeable ZAB demonstrates a high peak power density of 187 mW cm –2 and shows excellent cycling stability up to 600 h This work provides new ideas for constructing non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts for practical applications in ZABs.

Fast and complete degradation of norfloxacin by using Fe/Fe3C@NG as a bifunctional catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate

Qian Peng,Yaobin Ding,Lihua Zhu,Guangli Zhang,Heqing Tang

A composite of Fe/Fe 3 C and N-doped graphitic carbon (Fe/Fe 3 [email protected] ) was prepared and used as a catalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward the oxidative degradation of Norfloxacin (NOF). It was observed that Fe/Fe 3 [email protected] behaved as a bifunctional material, showing both good adsorption ability and catalytic activity. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe/Fe 3 [email protected] for NOF was evaluated as 0.13 mmol g −1 . Under given conditions (NOF concentration 0.1 mmol L −1 , catalyst load 0.1 g L −1 and PMS addition 1 mmol L −1 ), the degradation of NOF was almost completely achieved in 20 min with a degradation rate constant of 0.22 min −1 . A non-radical mechanism was proposed for the activation of PMS by Fe/Fe 3 [email protected] by the scavenging test, EPR and chronoamperometry analysis. The fast and complete degradation of NOF was achieved via a rapid electron transform, in which both PMS and NOF molecular were adsorbed on the surface of Fe/Fe 3 [email protected] and PMS was activated by obtaining electrons from NOF to oxidize NOF. The present study provides a green bifunctional catalyst for the oxidative removal of organic pollutants in various environmental media.

Fe/Fe3C@C nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped graphene–CNTs framework as an efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for robust rechargeable Zn–air batteries

Qichen Wang,Yongpeng Lei,Zhiyan Chen,Nan Wu,Yaobing Wang,Bing Wang,Yingde Wang

3d transition metals or their derivatives encapsulated in nitrogen-doped nanocarbon show promising potential in non-precious metal oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, we describe the simple construction of a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst with a “framework-active sites” structure, namely Fe/Fe3C@C (Fe@C) nanoparticles encapsulated in 3D N-doped graphene and bamboo-like CNTs (Fe@C–NG/NCNTs). The Fe@C structure provides additional electrons on the carbon surface, promoting the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on adjacent Fe–Nx active sites. The 3D NG hybrid with a bamboo-like CNTs framework facilitates fast reactant diffusion and rapid electron transfer. The optimized sample displays excellent ORR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, with a potential difference of only 0.84 V; this places it among the best bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysts. Most importantly, Zn–air batteries using Fe@C–NG/NCNTs as the cathode catalyst deliver a peak power density of 101.2 mW cm−2 and a specific capacity of 682.6 mA h g−1 (energy density of 764.5 W h kg−1). After 297 continuous cycle tests (99 h), the rechargeable batteries using Fe@C–NG/NCNTs show a voltage gap increase of only 0.13 V, almost half that of Pt/C + Ir/C (0.22 V) under the same conditions. This work provides new insight into advanced electrocatalysts utilizing the structural features of host nanocarbon materials and guest active species toward energy conversion.

Fe/Fe3C@N-doped porous carbon microspindles templated from a metal–organic framework as highly selective and stable catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides

Li Fang,Qionghao Xu,Yanyan Qi,Xiaoxue Wu,Yanghe Fu,Qiang Xiao,Fumin Zhang,Weidong Zhu

The preparation of efficient and recyclable solid catalysts exhibiting high activity and selectivity toward the target product is a prerequisite to enhance the overall efficiency of a catalytic process. Herein, we study a series of Fe/Fe 3 C-containing nitrogen-doped porous carbon microspindles (Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–x, where x stands for the pyrolysis temperature), which are core-/shell-structured hybrids, constructed by the pyrolysis of a metal–organic framework precursor as highly selective catalysts for the oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides under mild conditions. The Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–x microspindles comprising Fe and Fe 3 C nanocrystals inlaid in nitrogen-doped porous carbon shells are fabricated by the direct carbonization of NH 2 –MIL–88B(Fe) polyhedra at 500 °C–800 °C and under nitrogen atmosphere. Among the various investigated catalysts, the Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–600 microspindles exhibit the best catalytic activity, higher than those exhibited by the analogue Fe/Fe 3 C@C–600 without N doping and the commercial Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , and Fe 3 C used for the catalytic oxidation of sulfides owing to the synergistic contribution of the Fe 3 C sites and adequate nitrogen doping in the porous carbon support. Furthermore, the magnetically separable properties of the Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–600 microspindles enable their convenient isolation from the reaction system using an external magnet, and they can be repeatedly used for six cycles without any loss in catalytic efficiency.

Freestanding cellulose paper-derived carbon/Fe/Fe3C with enhanced electrochemical kinetics for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Yu-Jiao Zhang,Jin Qu,Qiu-Yu Ji,Ting-Ting Zhang,Wei Chang,Shu-Meng Hao,Zhong-Zhen Yu

The loss and sluggish kinetics of intermediate polysulfides in electrochemical processes seriously reduce electrochemical activity of sulfur in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, we design and synthesize freestanding graphitized carbon interlayers decorated with Fe/Fe 3 C nanocatalysts by thermal treatment of cellulose paper with adsorbed ferric nitrate at 1000 °C, during which the freestanding carbon network derives from the cellulose paper while the Fe results from the reduction of Fe 3+ with a carbothermal reduction process; simultaneously, the in situ formed Fe boosts graphitization of carbon to enhance electrical conductivity of the interlayer, and the carbon network effectively helps confine and accommodate Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles . Therefore, the well dispersed Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles catalytically accelerate electrochemical conversion of polysulfides, while the enhanced conductive network of carbon benefits the electron transfer during the electrocatalytic process. The cell with an optimal carbon/Fe/Fe 3 C interlayer delivers excellent cyclability and rate performances. At current densities of 0.2C and 2C, the specific capacities are close to 1000 and 735 mA h g −1 , respectively. Even after 200 cycles at 1C, the reversible specific capacity is still 772 mA h g −1 . Such a synergistic catalytic interlayer with an enhanced conversion kinetic towards polysulfides provides a new approach for improving electrochemical performances of LSBs.

Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles in situ-doped with carbon nanofibers embedded in rGO as high-performance anode electrocatalysts of microbial fuel cells

Tingli Ren,Yuanfeng Liu,Xiaoqiu Lin,Congju Li

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) demonstrate significant potential as renewable energy devices due to their ability to harvest electrical energy from wastewater. However, sluggish extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency and poor biofilm colonization on the anode interface greatly restrict the power generation of MFCs. Anchoring efficient anode electrocatalysts over the anode surface has been proven to be a powerful strategy to enhance the overall performance of MFCs. Herein, anode electrocatalysts comprising carbon nanofibers in situ-doped with Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO/NCNFs@Fe/Fe3C) were fabricated through electrospinning, carbonization, and freeze-drying methods, based on the following considerations: (i) the excellent electrocatalytic properties and biocompatibility of Fe3C; (ii) the formation of abundant reactive sites (such as Fe–N) on the surface of carbon nanofibers induced by the doping of N and Fe elements; (iii) the aerogel structure with a huge specific surface area and excellent electrochemical properties. Therefore, an MFC with an rGO/NCNFs@Fe/Fe3C-modified anode achieved a maximum power density of 2318 mW m−2 and a maximum output voltage of approximately 0.64 V, which was significantly superior to that of the pristine carbon cloth anode. This work provides a novel strategy to improve biofilm colonization and EET, thus promoting the power generation of MFCs.

Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in N-doped porous carbon as the heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalyst for efficient degradation of bisphenol A

Chao Zhang,Mengxiang Ye,Huaimeng Li,Zhenzhen Liu,Zhen Fu,Haimin Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Yunxia Zhang

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton is a promising technology for the degradation of organic contaminants. To ensure its effectiveness, it is in urgent demand to design cathode materials with the integrated capability of sufficient H 2 O 2 generation and subsequent activation into reactive oxygen species (ROS) together with catalytic stability. Herein, a composite constituted by Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles embedded into N-doped porous carbon (NPC), designated as Fe/Fe 3 C@NPC, was successfully fabricated from Fe 3+ -loaded poly(imine dioxime) (PIDO) membrane via the thermal treatment in N 2 atmosphere and employed as the heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalyst to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). By optimizing the pyrolysis temperature and loading level of iron species, the catalyst obtained at 800 °C (i.e. Fe/Fe 3 C@NPC-800) achieved almost 100% of BPA removal efficiency within 120 min via the electro-Fenton system, accompanied by 69.2% of the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate. Furthermore, the proposed composite catalyst also exhibited satisfactory reusability and stability, as reflected by low decrease in removal efficiency after six successive degradation tests and limited iron leaching (<0.5 mg/L). This work might provide valuable instruction for the rational design of highly efficient and stable heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalysts for organic pollutant control.

Fe/Fe3C modification to effectively achieve high-performance Si–C anode materials

Xuqi Lin,Jingguo Gao,Kehua Zhong,Yongcong Huang,Hurong Yao,Yingbin Lin,Yongping Zheng,Zhigao Huang,Jiaxin Li

For high-performance silicon–carbon (Si–C)-based anode materials used in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), there is an urgent need to rationally construct a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film and load a high proportion of silicon content, which is closely related to the capacity and cycling stability of the electrode. Herein, composites of Fe/Fe3C-modified carbon nanofiber–coated Si nanoparticles (Fe/Fe3C–Si@CNFs) were synthesized via a simple electrospinning method. These composites effectively overcome the volume change effect, poor interfacial compatibility and low conductivity, delivering excellent LIB performance. Tested at 2.0 A g−1, Fe/Fe3C–Si@CNFs provides a high reversible capacity of 956.5 mA h g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of more than 99.5% even after 4000 ultra-long stable cycles. The high conductivity of the Fe/Fe3C embedded in the CNF framework can promote e− transfer and boost the Li+ diffusion kinetics in the electrode. The catalytic activity of Fe/Fe3C helps to enhance the interfacial compatibility, grow a balanced stable SEI film and promote the long-cycle stability of the electrode at room temperature.

Exploration of magnetic media modulation engineering on heterogeneous carbon spheres for optimized electromagnetic wave absorption

Na Li,Lihua Liu,Yi Duan,Huiling Gu,Ji Huang,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan,Gang Chen

Magnetic carbon spheres are promising electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials due to their strong electromagnetic coupling effect. In the present work, magnetic carbon spheres composed of N-doped carbon spheres (NCSs) with magnetic Fe and Fe 3 C (Fe-Fe 3 C) nanoparticles were synthesized and the contents of Fe nanoparticles were adjusted through dilute hydrochloric acid treatment processes. The prepared NCSs/Fe-Fe 3 C composites dominate excellent EMW absorption performances with an optimal reflection loss value reaching − 63.77 dB at 9.92 GHz under a matching thickness of 2.9 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches 4.88 GHz. The excellent absorption performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of conductance loss, polarization loss, and magnetic loss arising from the different components of the composites. Moreover, the variation of Fe contents can regulate the dielectric and magnetic permeability characteristics of NCSs/Fe-Fe 3 C composites, and finally balance the impedance matching and attenuation coefficient. Our results pave the way for the development of high-efficiency EMW absorbing materials and clarify the regulation mechanism of magnetic media on the absorption performances of magnetic carbon spheres.

Facile fabrication of Fe/Fe3C@starch-derived hierarchical porous carbon for microwave absorption

Hua Wanlu,Hu Chunyan,Xie Xiaoli,Gou Guangjun

The three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon materials are helpful for forming thin, light-weight, wide effective absorption bandwidth and strong absorption intensity absorbers. However, previous methods were not environmentally friendly enough. Thus, in this work, the Fe/Fe 3 C@porous carbon was synthesized from soluble starch and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O via chemical bowling and subsequent carbonization at 700 °C with different ratios. When the ratio of starch to Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O is 1:1.5, the porous carbon exhibits a strong absorption ability with minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of −16.64 dB at 16.78 GHz, when the thickness is 1.75 mm and the proportion of paraffin wax is 30 wt%. The synergy of well impedance matching, sufficient loss performance, and interface polarization makes 3D porous carbon materials an excellent wave absorber. This work provides a good inspiration for studying outstanding performance microwave absorption materials.
