Plasma-enhanced catalytic oxidation of ethylene oxide over Fe–Mn based ternary catalysts

Xinbo Zhu,Haiping Xiong,Jin Liu,Yuting Gan,Zitan Xu,Chunlin Zhou,Yaolin Wang,Ye Jiang,Xin Tu

In this work, Fe–Mn based ternary catalysts (Fe–Mn-X, X = Ce, Co and Cu) were evaluated in the plasma-catalytic oxidation of ethylene oxide (EO) using a cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The addition of transition metal dopants to the Fe–Mn catalyst significantly improved the performance of plasma-catalyzed EO oxidation compared to the reaction using plasma only and the Fe–Mn catalyst. The highest EO conversion (91.9%) and CO 2 selectivity (78.9%) were obtained over the Fe–Mn–Co catalyst at a specific energy input (SEI) of 730.2 J l −1 . Moreover, the presence of water vapor improved EO conversion and CO 2 selectivity in the relative humidity (RH) range of 0–60%, while further increasing the RH to 80% reduced EO conversion. The interactions between Fe, Mn and dopants increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the Fe–Mn-X catalyst, while maintaining the crystalline structure of the catalysts. The presence of the dopants enhanced the reducibility of the Fe–Mn-X catalysts and produced more surface adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) on the catalyst surfaces. Moreover, the interactive effects among the Fe, Mn and dopants facilitated the plasma-catalytic oxidation reactions via enhanced surface reactions. The coupling of plasma with the Fe–Mn–Co catalyst reduced the formation of organic by-products in the plasma-catalyzed oxidation of EO.

Microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca12Al14O33 bi-functional material for H2 production from sorption enhanced water gas shift

Chunxiao Zhang,Yingjie Li,Zirui He,Jianli Zhao,Dong Wang

Herein, a hollow microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 bi-functional material was prepared by the bio-template method and used for H 2 production from sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS). The microtubular Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 exhibits excellent CO 2 capture and H 2 production performance in SEWGS/regeneration cycles. The stable hollow microtubular structure improves available adsorption and catalytic sites in Fe/Mn-promoted CaO-Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 for CO 2 capture and H 2 production. Mn addition improves CO 2 affinity capacity of the microtubular material. The Fe-Mn interaction increases redox ability of Fe 3+ /Fe 3+, 2+ , which promotes CO conversion. Moreover, the formed Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 and Ca 2 MnO 4 both increase oxygen vacancies to promote catalytic activity of the microtubular material for WGS and its CO 2 capture capacity. The CO conversions for the microtubular material with the Fe/Mn/Al/Ca molar ratio= 10/2/10/100 are 98.7% and 94.0% after 20 cycles under the mild and severe calcination conditions, respectively. The hollow microtubular bi-functional material shows good prospect for efficient H 2 production from SEWGS.

The enhanced As(III) removal by Fe-Mn-Cu ternary oxide via synergistic oxidation: Performances and mechanisms

Kun Wu,Meng Wang,Angzhen Li,Zixuan Zhao,Ting Liu,Xiaodan Hao,Shengjiong Yang,Pengkang Jin

Mn-oxide-containing adsorbents have shown outstanding performances for the removal of As(III) through an “oxidation-adsorption” process. In this study, a new adsorbent of Fe-Mn-Cu ternary oxide (FMCTO) was fabricated to improve the redox reaction rate and to enhance the recovery of oxidative ability. FMCTO exhibited a stronger ability for As(III) removal than most of other adsorbents, because it has better oxidative capability for As(III) oxidation. The state of dynamic equilibrium for As(III) removal by FMCTO could be basically achieved within 3 h, and the As removal efficiency reached 98.9% at time = 24 h. The Langmuir As adsorption capacity of FMCTO was determined to be 204.8 mg/g. The As(III) removal efficiency of FMCTO was further boosted by 7% through oxygen gas aeration and decreased by 19% with nitrogen gas in the ambient during the first 3 h, indicating the positive effect of oxygen on As(III) oxidation. EPR and UV spectra methods were used to confirm the generation of superoxide radical (O 2 − ) and the enhanced production of Mn(III) soluble species on FMCTO surfaces, thus achieving a better As(III) oxidation performance. The XPS analysis results showed that the electron transfer from Cu(I) to Mn(IV) could improve the stability of Mn(III) within FMCTO. Meanwhile, Mn(II) ions could be oxidized to Mn(III) by O 2 − . Hence, the formation of a redox cycle between Mn(II) and Mn(III) along with the production of O 2 − plays a vital role in the upgraded As(III) removal mechanisms. This study provides new insights into the promotion of the capability of Mn-containing adsorbents for achieving the improved removal of As from As(III)-contaminated water.

Boosting organics degradation via sulfite activation by Fe/Mn@CF composite electrode: Performance and mechanism

Ertai Zhang,Shuyan Guan,Haojun Fan,Yongxin Wang,Hui Yan,Lei Guo,Xuedong Zhai,Carlos A. Martínez Huitle,Jing Ding

Sulfite has been proven to promote advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to achieve low-cost and efficient degradation of contaminants, serving as an alternative to persulfate. In this study, a novel composite Fe/Mn@carbon felt (CF) electrode was successfully constructed to remove carbamazepine (CBZ). The capacity of the Fe/Mn@CF anode to activate sulfite was evaluated under various electrode preparation conditions and operating parameters. Results clearly indicated that the complete removal of CBZ was achieved in Fe/Mn@CF anode activated sulfite system under the specific conditions including Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte concentration of 50 mM, sulfite dosage of 1 mM, initial pH of 7, and current density of 1 mA/cm 2 . The capacity of Fe/Mn@CF anode for sulfite activation was further presented by its excellent reusability and stability in terms of CBZ removal and metal ion release. Both radical and non-radical pathways were significantly contributed to the CBZ removal, including OH, SO 4 · - , O 2 · - , 1 O 2 , and other reasons. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that Fe-Mn bimetals effectively promoted sulfite activation, with the electric field further boosting the process of Fe-Mn valence cycle and oxidation. Overall, the novel Fe/Mn@CF activated sulfite system exhibited outstanding performance and had great potential for sustainable use in removing organics.

Oxidative degradation of p-chlorophenol by the persulfate-doped Fe–Mn bimetallic hydroxide, the parametrical significance, and systematical optimization

Huang Tao,Du Jing,Yu Danni,Deng Shihan,Zhang Shuwen,Liu Longfei

Aqueous Fe(II)-catalyzed activation commonly deteriorates the oxidation performance of persulfate (PS) to the treatment of organic contaminants. In this study, a PS-doped layered bimetallic hydroxide (Fe–Mn hydroxide) was synthesized to construct a heterogeneously catalytic system to solve the issue brought by homogeneity. The molar ratio of Fe(II) to Mn(II) and the mass ratio of PS to Fe–Mn hydroxide both had a significant impact on the catalytic degradation of p-CP. Reaction temperatures engaged in the most essential role in influencing the degradation and removal of p-chlorophenol (p-CP). The optimal combination of factors for the preparation of PS-hydroxide and the treatment of p-CP was finally determined by significance analysis. The degradation process was appropriately fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The benzene ring in p-CP was broken by PS-hydroxide during the adsorption. The surface modification of PS-hydroxide caused by the valence transition of Mn was beneficial to the adsorption and catalytic degradation of p-CP.

Fe–Mn–Ce oxide-modified biochar composites as efficient adsorbents for removing As(III) from water: adsorption performance and mechanisms

Liu Xuewei,Gao Minling,Qiu Weiwen,Khan Zulqarnain Haider,Liu Nengbin,Lin Lina,Song Zhengguo

In this study, a novel Fe–Mn–Ce oxide-modified biochar composite (FMCBC) was synthesized via pyrolysis to enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar (BC). Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that Fe, Mn, and Ce were successfully loaded onto the surface of the BC. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the FMCBC exhibited improved adsorption of As(III) in an aqueous environment. The adsorption process was well expressed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of FMCBC reached 8.74 mg L −1 , which was 3.27 times greater than that of BC. The pH of the solution significantly influenced the adsorption of As(III), where the amount of As(III) adsorbed by FMCBC was maximized at pH 3. A high phosphate concentration inhibited adsorption, whereas nitrate and sulfate ions promoted As(III) adsorption and increased the FMCBC adsorption capacity. Similarly, with increasing humic acid concentration, the adsorption capacity of FMCBC for As(III) decreased; however, a low concentration of humic acid promoted adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the adsorption of As(III) by FMCBC occurred through redox and surface complexation reactions. Therefore, FMCBC has excellent potential for purifying arsenic-contaminated water.

Fe–Mn/MCM-41: Preparation, Characterization, and Catalytic Activity for Methyl Orange in the Process of Heterogeneous Fenton Reaction

Zhang Xubin,Dong Jianxin,Hao Zhencheng,Cai Wangfeng,Wang Fumin

Active Fe- and Mn-loaded MCM-41 (Fe–Mn/MCM-41), which was synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction followed by impregnation, is used in the heterogeneous Fenton reaction to degrade methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherm analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Compared with Fe/MCM-41 and Mn/MCM-41, Fe–Mn/MCM-41 showed higher activity for MO degradation and mineralization. Effects of various operating parameters, such as pH, Mn content, and H 2 O 2 dosage, on the degradation process were subsequently investigated. Results of experiments on the effect of radical scavengers revealed that the degradation of MO could be attributed to oxidation by HO·. The synergy of Fe and Mn species in the Fenton oxidation process was also explained.

Catalytic Ozonation Process for Treating Coking Biochemical Wastewater Based on an Fe-Mn/Al2O3 Catalyst

Yihe Qin,Run Yuan,Shaojun Luo,Haiming Huang,Xuwen He

Catalysts with high catalytic performance are crucial for the catalytic ozonation of organic wastewater. This study synthesized an efficient, stable, and practical Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 ozone catalyst for wastewater treatment using an impregnation calcination method, and applied it in the catalytic ozonation of wastewater. When the concentration of manganese nitrate was 0.15   mol/L, the Mn/Fe ratio was 3:1, the immersion time was 24   hours, the calcination temperature was 500 ℃, and the calcination time was 4   hours, the prepared Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 had the best catalytic effect on simulated wastewater, with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 73.6%. At the same time, the physicochemical properties of the catalyst were investigated, and the catalytic effect of the catalyst on actual coking wastewater was investigated on a laboratory scale. When the ozone concentration was 20   mg/L, the gas flow rate was 0.5   L/min, the catalyst concentration was 400   g/L, and the pH was 7.02, the actual COD removal efficiency of coking wastewater was 71.6%. The pilot test results showed that the COD of the treated coking wastewater could stably meet the standard (COD<80   mg/L), with an average COD removal rate of about 58.3%, indicating that the Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 had high catalytic activity and good stability. Kinetic analysis showed that the degradation process of organic pollutants followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The results of water quality analysis such as conventional water quality indicators, fluorescence spectroscopy, and molecular weight classification indicated that the large molecular organic pollutants were efficiently degraded. Mechanism analysis indicated that the active components of the catalyst reacted with ozone through electron transfer to enhance the ozone utilization efficiency and efficiently remove organic pollutants. This study can provide theoretical support and technical reference for the standardized discharge of coking wastewater in the future.

Remediation performance of As-contaminated water and soil using a novel Fe–Mn bimetallic (oxyhydr)oxide coated on natural magnetite

Jin Qi,Dong Yingbo,Pan Hanlin,Lin Hai

It is challenging to separate the materials for treating arsenic contamination of soil and water from systems. The natural magnetite covered with Fe–Mn bimetallic (oxyhydr)oxide (Fe–Mn MSM) was effectively created in this study, and its potential use in removing As from water and soil was investigated. Batch adsorption studies showed that the As(V) adsorption on Fe–Mn MSM could achieve equilibrium after 120 min when the initial As(V) concentration was 39.85 mg/L. The calculated maximum adsorption of Fe–Mn MSM for As(V) was 17.94 mg/g at 20 °C. The mechanism of As(V) adsorption was confirmed to be a combination of ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction by the outcomes of FTIR analysis, SEM, and batch adsorption tests. Fe–Mn MSM can also be a successful amendment for cleaning up As-polluted soil. The 5% Fe–Mn MSM treatment group had the lowest exchangeable fraction of As (EX-As) concentration, 0.039 mg/kg (8.3% of initial EX-As), after 40 days. Magnetic separation could be used to quickly and completely recover the used Fe–Mn MSM from the soil. EX-As was present in higher concentrations on Fe–Mn MSM than that of the original soil. As a result, this work offers a strategy that may be put into practice to cheaply remove As from soil and water while also encouraging the reuse of natural magnetite. Graphical abstract

Hierarchical Fe–Mn binary metal oxide core–shell nano-polyhedron as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient water splitting

Yun-Wu Li,Shi-Kun Su,Cai-Zhen Yue,Jun Shu,Peng-Fang Zhang,Fang-Hui Du,Su-Na Wang,Hui-Yan Ma,Jie Yin,Xin Shao

Electrochemical water splitting is convinced as one of the most promising solutions to combat the energy crisis. The exploitation of efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts is undoubtedly a vital spark yet challenging for imperative green sustainable energy. Herein, through introducing a simple pH regulated redox reaction into a tractable hydrothermal procedure, a hierarchical Fe3O4@MnOx binary metal oxide core–shell nano-polyhedron was designed by evolving MnOx wrapped Fe3O4. The MnOx effectively prevents the agglomeration and surface oxidation of Fe3O4 nano-particles and increases the electrochemically active sites. Benefiting from the generous active sites and synergistic effects of Fe3O4 and MnOx, the Fe3O4@MnOx-NF nanocomposite implements efficient HER/OER bifunctional electrocatalytic performance and overall water splitting. As a result, hierarchical Fe3O4@MnOx only requires a low HER/OER overpotential of 242/188 mV to deliver 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 116.4/77.6 mV dec−1, combining a long-term cyclability of 5 h. Impressively, by applying Fe3O4@MnOx as an independent cathode and anode, the overall water splitting cell supplies a competitive voltage of 1.64 V to achieve 10 mA cm−2 and super long cyclability of 80 h. These results reveal that this material is a promising candidate for practical water electrolysis application.

Oxidation and adsorption of antimony(III) from surface water using novel Al2O3-supported Fe–Mn binary oxide nanoparticles: effectiveness, dynamic quantitative mechanisms, and life cycle analysis

Yang Bai,Fan Wu,Yanyan Gong

Antimony(III) or Sb(III) contamination in surface waters poses a serious threat to the ecological system and human health, and green and cost-effective technologies are urgently needed to mitigate its toxic effects. We green synthesized a novel oxidative sorbent, referred to as Al2O3-supported Fe–Mn binary oxide nanoparticles (Fe–Mn@Al2O3), and investigated its removal effectiveness and dynamic quantitative removal mechanisms of Sb(III) at environmentally relevant levels from simulated surface water. Fe–Mn binary oxides (Fe–Mn) were successfully attached on the surface of Al2O3via intermolecular hydrogen bonding, resulting in the formation of Fe–Mn@Al2O3 with a larger specific surface area, greater oxidizing reactivity, and more sorption sites compared to Fe–Mn. The resulting composite is mainly composed of FeOOH, Fe2O3, MnO2, and Al2O3. Life cycle assessment (LCA) indicated that the Fe–Mn@Al2O3 synthesis met green chemistry principles. Fe–Mn@Al2O3 at a Fe : Al2O3 molar ratio of 1 : 2 displayed an enhanced Sb(III) sorption capacity of 272.2 mg g−1 at pH 6.4 within 48 h. Sorption kinetic data were adequately simulated with the pseudo second-order kinetic model and the intraparticle diffusion model, suggesting that the sorption kinetics were a combination of chemisorption and intraparticle diffusion. The Freundlich isotherm model outperformed the Langmuir model in simulating the sorption isotherm data, which aligns with the heterogeneous surface sorption sites of Fe–Mn@Al2O3. MnO2 in Fe–Mn@Al2O3 oxidized Sb(III) to Sb(V), whereas FeOOH and Al2O3 acted as adsorption sites towards Sb(III) and Sb(V). Most importantly, Fe–Mn@Al2O3 still maintained high sorption efficiencies towards Sb(III) after five consecutive regeneration cycles. The dynamic quantitative removal mechanisms were proposed thereafter. Upon equilibrium, 92.8% of Sb(III) was sorbed by Fe–Mn@Al2O3, and 94.9% of sorbed Sb(III) was oxidized to produce Sb(V) and Mn(II). 59.1% of the formed Sb(V) was adsorbed onto Fe-Mn@Al2O3 and 40.9% of Sb(V) was released into the solution. The new quantitative and mechanistic insights contribute to an improved understanding of the uptake of Sb(III) by Fe–Mn@Al2O3 in natural and engineered systems, and the results may guide further preparation and application of reactive adsorbents for removal of redox-active contaminants from water.

Evaluation of Thermochemical Energy Storage Performance of Fe-/Mn-Doped, Zr-Stabilized, CaO-Based Composites under Different Thermal Energy Storage Modes

Jian Sun,Shengbin Bai,KeKe Li,Yue Zhou,Yuning Chen,Lei Liu,Zijian Zhou

CaCO3/CaO materials possess the advantages of low cost, high energy storage density, and working temperature, which offer these materials the potential to be used in thermochemical energy storage systems for concentrated solar power plants. However, CaCO3/CaO materials possess poor antisintering and optical absorption abilities, largely limiting their practicability for direct solar utilization. In this study, binary ion doping of Fe/Mn and Zr-based stabilizer incorporation were simultaneously conducted to improve the cyclic thermal energy storage/release performance of CaCO3/CaO materials. The spectral absorbance of synthetic CaO-based composites (ranging from 77.8% to 84.0%) doped with binary ions of Fe/Mn is greatly increased in comparison to that of pure CaO (∼12.2%) due to the generation of black Ca2Fe2O5 and Ca4Mn3O10. The cyclic thermal energy storage/release performances of synthetic CaO-based composites were comparatively investigated under two thermal energy storage modes (CSP-N2 and CSP-CO2). The Zr-doped, CaO-based composites exhibit a cycling stability superior to those of Zr-free CaO-based composites due to the generated inert CaZrO3 with desirable antisintering ability, and the superiority is more prominent under CSP-CO2 mode. After 50 cycles, the CaO-based composite with a molar ratio of Ca:Zr = 100:6.7 exhibits a remarkably stable energy release density of 1.02 MJ/kg under CSP-CO2 mode, retaining 88.9% of its initial energy release density.
