Bisphenol A (BPA) is regarded as an endocrine disruptor associated with negative health effects in animals and humans. Laccase from white-rot fungus can enable BPA oxidation and auto-polymerization to circumvent its biotoxicity, but the work concerning the effect mechanisms of divalent and trivalent metal ions (MIs) on BPA polyreaction have rarely been reported. Herein, Trametes versicolor laccase-started BPA conversion within 1 h followed pseudo-first order kinetics, and the rate constant ( k prcs ) and half-life were respectively 0.61 h −1 and 1.14 h. The presence of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Al 3+ exhibited insignificant impact on BPA removal, whereas Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ had a strong inhibiting effect. Compared with MI-free, the k prcs values of BPA respectively lowered 34.4%, 44.3% and 98.4% in the presence of Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ . Enzymatic activity and differential absorption spectrum disclosed that the inhibitory actions were accomplished by two different mechanisms. One is Fe 2+ was preferentially oxidized into Fe 3+ that restrained laccase activity at the initial stage of reaction, and subsequently, the formed Fe 3+ complex bound with laccase T1-Cu site and thus impeded the single-electron transfer system. The other is Mn 2+ was instantly oxidized by laccase to generate Mn 3+ -citrate complex, which completely consumed the dissolved O 2 in solution and consequently terminated BPA removal. Considering environmental bioremediation, T. versicolor laccase-enabled auto-polymerization is a simple and convenient candidate to eliminate BPA in enzymatic wastewater treatment , however the effects of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ on BPA decontamination should be cautiously assessed.

Thiol-disulfide exchange, one of the most popular dynamical combinatorial chemistries under physiological conditions, typically requires long equilibration times to reach the desired equilibrium composition. We successfully synthesized Cysteine-iron oxychloride (Cys-FeOCl) nanobelts by introducing L-cysteine as a dispersing agent during the liquid-phase exfoliation of FeOCl. This material utilizes the L-cysteine thiol group ( SH) to accelerate the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, significantly enhancing the peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity, and constructing a coupling network of “cysteine-cystine” biochemical redox pair and “Fe 2+ -Fe 3+ chemical metal valence state cycling”, thereby continuously generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Experimental results reveal that Cys-FeOCl exhibited 100% antibacterial efficiency against Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at 2 μg·mL −1 , and 99% antibacterial activity against Gram-negative extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-producing E. coli ) at 10 μg·mL −1 . The mechanism lies in the ROS burst, causing bacterial structure rupture, DNA damage and protein leakage. Interestingly, excessive addition of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) will destroy the coupling cycle constructed by Cys-FeOCl, thereby weakening its bactericidal efficacy. This study confirms that cysteine, ultrasound-assisted, and FeOCl are the three essential factors for constructing the efficient nanozyme bactericidal agent Cys-FeOCl, providing a novel and powerful strategy for combating drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Since pesticide residues in food have attracted increasing concern worldwide, it is crucial to develop rapid and sensitive analytical methods to detect pesticide residues and ensure food safety. In this work, via the biotin-streptavidin (SA) recognition system, we constructed a magnetic relaxation switching (MRS) immunosensor for sensitive detection of chlorpyrifos (CPF). With a competitive immunoassay mode, H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ were firstly optimized as the reaction substrates. Wherein, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) acted as enzyme label to catalyze H 2 O 2 and mediated the conversion of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . By introducing Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ interconversion as MRS signal output, CPF was detected by the immunoreaction induced variations of the transverse relaxation time (ΔT 2 ). The proposed MRS immunosensor exhibited a detection linear range from 0.01 to 1000 ng mL −1 (R 2 = 0.9916), with the limit of detection (LOD) of 6 pg mL −1 (3S/M, n = 3). As a proof-of-concept, CPF was easily detected among five different pesticides at a low concentration level (0.1 ng mL −1 ), as well as in real samples (apple, tea, and lettuce) with recoveries of 80.70–115.30%. Besides, the sensor can realize one step of “separation and detection” towards CPF with the aid of magnetic nanoparticles , which demonstrate its promising potential for pesticide residue detection in food samples and environment.

A green low-cost redox flow battery using Zn/Zn 2+ redox couple in HAc/NaAc medium and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox couple in H 2 SO 4 medium was first proposed and investigated for potential stationary energy storage applications . The presence of HAc/NaAc in the negative electrolyte can keep the pH between 2.0 and 6.0 even when a large amount of H + ions move into negative electrolyte from positive electrolyte through ion exchange membrane . In the pH range of 2.0–6.0, the chemical reaction of Zn species with H + species is very insignificant; furthermore, the electroreduction of H + ion on the negative electrode is significantly suppressed at this pH range. The zinc-ferrum redox flow battery (Zn/Fe RFB) operated within a voltage window of 0.5–2.0 V with a nearly 90% utilization ratio, and its energy efficiency is around 71.1% at room temperature. These results show that Zn/Fe RFB is a promising option as a stationary energy storage equipment.

Biochar loaded with bimetallic Fe/Mo (Fe/Mo-BC) was prepared as a cost-effective catalyst for the degradation of organic matter by activated peroxydisulfate, in which MoO 2 was used as a co-catalyst to enhance Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. The tetracycline-degradation efficiency of the system reached 74.49 % within 10 min, and it showed high removal rates over a wide pH range (3–9). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses showed that 1 O 2 , •OH, O 2 • - , and SO 4 • − produced by the Fe/Mo-BC/PDS system are involved in tetracycline degradation, with 1 O 2 and •OH being the dominant active substances. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Mo(IV) reduces Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and oxidizes itself to Mo(VI). In addition, the Fe/Mo-BC remained stable and could be recycled three times, indicating the feasibility of this system for practical applications. The possible pathways of TC degradation by this system were investigated by LC-MS and DFT calculations. Thus, the present study provides a feasible strategy for the use of biochar-loaded bimetallic materials and PDS for the degradation of organic matter.

β -glucan served as the raw material to fabricate β -glucan-Eu(tta) 2 (phen), effectively enhancing Eu 3+ luminescence by synergistic sensitization. • β -glucan-Eu(tta) 2 (phen) showed selective luminescence quenching for Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ by a static quenching mechanism. • β -glucan reduced Eu 3+ coordination complex cytotoxicity and conferred antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. • Flexible luminescent films retained sensing performance and facilitated visual Fe 3+ detection. This study presents a novel lanthanide luminescent material featuring a synergistic sensitization system composed of β -glucan, 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl) butane-1,3-dione (tta), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), which efficiently enhances and modulates the luminescence of Eu 3+ . The resulting β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex exhibits specific luminescent responses toward Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ , with detection limits (LOD = 3 σ /K SV ) of 1.44 μmol·L -1 and 1.05 μmol·L -1 , respectively. The luminescence quenching mechanism was attributed to static quenching, accompanied by the inner filter effect. Notably, luminescence quenched by Fe 3+ is reversible upon the addition of EDTA, whereas no luminescence recovery is observed when EDTA is introduced subsequent to Fe 2+ -mediated quenching. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex have been evaluated. The antibacterial zone experiments confirm that β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex has good antibacterial effects on both Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). β -glucan exerts a pronounced effect on mitigating the toxicity of Eu 3+ coordination complex. β -glucan-induced Eu 3+ coordination complex can form flexible luminescent films with carrageenan (CRG) or D4 hydrogel (D4), while retaining excellent luminescent properties, thereby holding significant potential for application in the detection of metal ions in environmental water samples. The low efficiency of photogenerated carriers separation and slow cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have limited the improvement of their photo-Fenton activity. Therefore, in this work, MIL-100/BiOBr heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst was constructed by compositing MIL-100 with BiOBr nanosheets through a simple solvent evaporation method. In this system, the type II heterojunctions formed by the close contact of MIL-100 and BiOBr can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and accelerate the redox cyclic of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , thereby significantly enhancing the photo-Fenton activity. Under visible light irradiation for 60 min, the best removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by MIL-100/BiOBr is 94.3 %. Remarkably, the MIL-100/BiOBr exhibits a nearly fourfold increase in degradation rate constant compared to MIL-100 at photo-Fenton system. In addition, the catalysts can maintain high degradation performance over a wide pH range (3–9) and the co-existence of different anions. An in-depth investigation of the degradation mechanism reveals that superoxide radicals ( · O 2 – ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) play major roles in the photo-Fenton system. Based on this, the possible degradation pathways were proposed. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for Fe-based MOFs to remove emerging pollutants from wastewater by photo-Fenton reaction.

To address the low Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling efficiency of Fe-based catalysts during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, this study successfully constructed a MIL-101(Fe)/WS 2 composite catalytic material. The results show that the MW 1:1 composite exhibits excellent performance toward PMS activation. By leveraging the cooperative effect of dual-metal cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and W 4+ /W 6+ , as well as unsaturated sulfur vacancies, it achieves 97% phenol degradation within 60 min, with a reaction constant of 0.1038 min −1 , which is approximately 110 times that of single MIL-101(Fe) and WS 2 . The effects of key operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH value and coexisting anions on phenol degradation efficiency were systematically evaluated. Through in-depth radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy analysis, it was clearly identified that sulfate radical ( SO 4 ∙ − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main active oxide species driving the degradation reaction. Furthermore, this study further elucidated the degradation means of phenol, proclaimed the reaction mechanisation, and evaluated the ecological toxicity of phenol and its intermediate products using the ECOSAR model. This work provides new insights for constructing efficient iron-based catalysts to activate PMS and promoting its application in the control of refractory organic pollutants.

In the present study, we demonstrated that the presence of cysteine could remarkably enhance the degradation of atrazine by Fe 3 O 4 /persulfate system. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra confirmed the combination of cysteine and Fe 3 O 4 exhibited much higher activity on activation of persulfate to generate more SO 4 •- and •OH than Fe 3 O 4 alone. At pH of 3.0, SO 4 •- and •OH contributed to about 58.2 % and 41.8 % of atrazine removal respectively, while •OH gradually dominated the oxidation of atrazine from neutral condition to alkaline condition. The co-existing Cl - and HCO 3 - could quench SO 4 •- , resulting in the inhibition of atrazine degradation. The presence of low natural organic matters (NOM) concentration (0-2 mg L -1 ) could enhance the atrazine removal, and high concentration (>5 mg L -1 ) of NOM restrained the atrazine degradation. During the Cysteine/Fe 3 O 4 /Persulfate process, cysteine served as a complexing reagent and reductant. Through acidolysis and complexation, Fe 3 O 4 could release dissolved and surface bound Fe 2+ , both of which contributed to the activation of persulfate together. Meanwhile, cysteine was not rapidly consumed due to a regeneration process, which was beneficial for maintaining Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle and constantly accelerating the activation of persulfate for atrazine degradation. The reused Fe 3 O 4 and cysteine in the Cysteine/Fe 3 O 4 /Persulfate process exhibited high stability for the atrazine degradation after three cycles. The degradation pathway of atrazine included alkylic-oxidation, dealkylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation processes. The present study indicates the novel Cysteine/Fe 3 O 4 /Persulfate process might be a high potential for treatment of organic polluted water.

To address the disadvantage of poor degradation effect of Fe 2+ /peroxydisulfate (PDS) system, a co-catalyst was introduced in this study to construct a molybdenum (Mo)/Fe 2+ /PDS system for the degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7), and the degradation rate could reach 95.67%. The effects of different parameters (initial pH, Fe 2+ concentration, etc.) on the degradation effect of AO7 in this system were investigated, and the optimal degradation conditions were obtained by combining cost analysis. Cycling experiments showed that Mo had good stability. The co-catalytic mechanism of Mo powder was determined using X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The effects of different inorganic anions on AO7 were discussed: Cl − and NO 3 − had little effect on degradation, while SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − both inhibited the removal of AO7 from the system to different degrees, with HCO 3 − showing a greater inhibition than SO 4 2− . The main active radicals were identified as sulfate radical (SO 4 ·− ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH). In addition, intermediates were identified, and the attack sites were determined by combining the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels and the Fukui index to hypothesize the degradation pathways. Toxicity indicators such as the mutagenicity of AO7 and intermediates were evaluated, and the overall trend of toxicity was decreasing. This study is expected to provide an efficient treatment process for dye wastewater.

L-cysteine (L-Cys) is an ideal cocatalyst that enhances the redox cycle of transition metals and accelerates chemical processes, widely used for promoting pollutant degradation in homogeneous systems. However, its role in heterogeneous systems, mechanisms and pathways, remains unclear. In this study, iron-based hydrothermal carbonation carbon (HTCC-Fe) was prepared by reconstituting reed cellulose through hydrothermal carbonization, acid etching, and Fe doping methods. L-Cys promoted the conversion of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which in turn strengthened peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and increased reactive species formation in the HTCC-Fe/PDS system, with •OH serving as the primary contributor to diclofenac (DCF) degradation, followed by 1 O 2 and O 2 •− . This degradation occurred through pathways including hydroxylation, dehydration, dechlorination, and C–N bond cleavage. As a result, the HTCC-Fe/PDS/L-Cys system achieved a 41.5% higher DCF degradation efficiency than the HTCC/PDS system, coupled with broad pH applicability, strong resistance to anions interference, and effective DCF removal (>70%) in real water matrices. By elucidating the previously unclear role of L-Cys in heterogeneous systems, this work revealed its co-catalytic mechanism in promoting electron transfer and regulating radical/non-radical pathways for enhanced pollutant degradation.

In this study, oxygen vacancy-engineered FeP/BiOBr heterojunction composites (FB-3) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method to achieve enhanced tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation through a visible-light-driven photo-Fenton process. Systematic characterizations (SEM, XRD, XPS, and EPR) confirmed the successful integration of FeP with BiOBr, which modulated the band structure, introduced abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), and suppressed photogenerated carrier recombination. Under the optimized conditions (0.2 g L–1 catalyst, 10 mM H2O2, and pH 4.2), the FB-3 composite achieved 94.2% TCH removal at an initial concentration of 40 mg L–1 within 90 min, with 73.9% TOC mineralization and minimal iron leaching of only 0.21 mg L–1. Mechanistic studies revealed that OVs acted as electron traps, accelerating Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycling and synergistically activating H2O2 to generate dominant reactive radicals (•OH and •O2–). Radical trapping experiments and EPR analysis validated the critical roles of photogenerated carriers and OVs in enhancing surface kinetics. The composite exhibited robust performance in diverse water matrices, demonstrating potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.
