Prussian blue derived Fe2N for efficiently improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of g-C3N4 nanosheets

Weiliang Qi,Siqi Liu,Fei Li,Heng Jiang,Zhixing Cheng,Shanlin Zhao,Minghui Yang

Transition metal nitrides have been recognized as excellent hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts and therefore are promising alternative co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Herein, iron nitride (Fe2N) nanoparticles have been prepared by using MOFs as sacrificial precursors. A novel g-C3N4–Fe2N nanostructure has been fabricated by an electrostatic self-assembly method at room temperature for photocatalytic H2 evolution. MOF-derived Fe2N nanoparticles as co-catalysts can promote photo-generated charge-carrier transportation/separation and decrease the overpotential of H2-evolution. Therefore, the optimal g-C3N4–Fe2N nanocomposite exhibits an obviously improved H2 evolution rate of 88.7 μmol g−1 h−1, which is almost 48 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 nanosheets.

Fe2N-modulated Mo2N/MoO2 multiple heterostructures for optimized electron configuration and reaction dynamics in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Hanfang Zhang,Junhao Dai,Banglong Shen,Donghui Zhang,Yanfang Wang,Bingbing Qiu,Huaqiang Chu

Mo-based catalysts have received widespread attention for their promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency. However, single Mo-based catalysts still have some shortcomings in terms of catalytic activity. Designing heterostructure is an effective strategy to optimize electron configuration, accelerate HER dynamics and modulate microstructure. Herein, a novel cross-linked sheet-like r-FeMo/NF (Fe 2 N/Mo 2 N/MoO 2 ) electrocatalyst with multiple heterostructures was prepared by a facile two-step method involving hydrothermal growth followed by nitridation, which directly formed the active material on nickel foam (NF). The formation of multiple heterostructures results in the redistribution of electrons between Fe and Mo species, promoting charge transfer and improving HER activity. As a result, the as-prepared r-FeMo/NF catalyst demands a low overpotential of 46.1 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the HER in 1 M KOH. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding long-term stability, maintaining excellent performance for 100 h at both 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . This work can provide valuable insights into designing highly efficient electrocatalysts with multiple heterostructures.

Rational Design of Ultra-Stable FeS2–Fe2N/SN-CNTs Heterostructures with Improved Bifunctional Catalytic Activities for High-Performance Zinc–Air Batteries

Chuxin Deng,Ningning Zhang,Jinrong Sun,Zifan Li,Mengjie Li,Shilei Xie,Shoushan Wang,Faliang Cheng

Zinc–air batteries are considered one of the most promising batteries for energy storage owing to their low cost, high safety, and high energy density. Developing effective bifunctional electrocatalysts is one of the important issues for zinc–air batteries. Although Fe2N demonstrates oxygen reduction activity comparable to that of Pt-based catalysts, its relatively poor catalytic activity for oxygen evolution and limited exposure of active sites still restrict its application. Herein, we report on the rational design and synthesis of FeS2 and Fe2N nanostructures on sulfur- and nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes as effective and ultrastable bifunctional electrocatalysts. The highly dispersed FeS2 and Fe2N nanostructures on CNTs provide numerous active catalytic sites, and the introduction of FeS2 improves the electronic structure and charge distribution of the electrocatalysts, significantly reducing the Gibbs free energy for rate-determining steps in the oxygen evolution reaction. The carbon nanotubes here can also accelerate the transportation of electrons and oxygen molecules, as well as enhance the stability of the electrocatalysts. Consequently, it achieved impressive oxygen reduction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.765 V vs RHE and a low overpotential of 0.46 V for the oxygen evolution reaction at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, respectively. Moreover, the homemade zinc–air battery based on the FeS2–Fe2N/SN-CNTs air-cathode can deliver a maximum power density of 119.2 mW cm–2. This study introduces a novel approach to the design of dual-function catalysts and zinc–air batteries.

Rational design of N-doped carbon nanobox-supported Fe/Fe2N/Fe3C nanoparticles as efficient oxygen reduction catalysts for Zn–air batteries

Lei Cao,Zhen-huan Li,Yu Gu,Dao-hao Li,Kun-mei Su,Dong-jiang Yang,Bo-wen Cheng

Zn–air battery, as a low cost, high energy density, and safe energy device, has received significant attention in recent years. However, its wide application has been hindered due to the low oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in air electrodes without excellent catalysts. Herein, N-doped porous and highly graphitic carbon nanobox-supported Fe-based nanoparticles (Fe–N-CNBs), which were synthesized from fructose, NH3, and FeCl3 by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) process followed by a heat treatment process, were used as ORR catalysts. Fe–N-CNBs calcined at 600 °C (Fe–N-CNBs-600) showed higher ORR activity (onset and half-wave potentials of 1.03 and 0.85 V vs. RHE, respectively), better electrochemical stability, and higher methanol tolerance than Pt/C under alkaline conditions. The outstanding ORR performance of Fe–N-CNBs-600 was attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe, Fe2N, and Fe3C nanoparticles, which was unambiguously confirmed by HRTEM and XRD characterization. Furthermore, Fe–N-CNBs-600 also exhibited higher electrochemical properties than the currently used expensive Pt/C catalyst in Zn–air batteries.

Revealing An Intercalation-Conversion-Heterogeneity Hybrid Lithium-Ion Storage Mechanism in Transition Metal Nitrides Electrodes with Jointly Fast Charging Capability and High Energy Output

Fei Li,Yadong Li,Linyi Zhao,Jie Liu,Fengkai Zuo,Fangchao Gu,Hengjun Liu,Renbin Liu,Yuhao Li,Jiqiang Zhan,Qiang Li,Hongsen Li

The performance of electrode materials depends intensively on the lithium (Li)-ion storage mechanisms correlating ultimately with the Coulombic efficiency, reversible capacity, and morphology variation of electrode material upon cycling. Transition metal nitrides anode materials have exhibited high-energy density and superior rate capability; however, the intrinsic mechanism is largely unexplored and still unclear. Here, a typical 3D porous Fe 2 N micro-coral anode is prepared and, an intercalation–conversion–heterogeneity hybrid Li-ion storage mechanism that is beyond the conventional intercalation or conversion reaction is revealed through various characterization techniques and thermodynamic analysis. Interestingly, using advanced in situ magnetometry, the ratio (ca. 24.4%) of the part where conversion reaction occurs to the entire Fe 2 N can further be quantified. By rationally constructing a Li-ion capacitor comprising 3D porous Fe 2 N micro-corals anode and commercial AC cathode, the hybrid full device delivers a high energy-density (157 Wh kg −1 ) and high power-density (20 000 W kg −1 ), as well as outstanding cycling stability (93.5% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). This research provides an original and insightful method to confirm the reaction mechanism of material related to transition metals and a fundamental basis for emerging fast charging electrode materials to be efficiently explored for a next-generation battery.
