Fe-Fe3N composite nitrogen-doped carbon framework: Multi-dimensional cross-linked structure boosting performance for the oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysis and zinc-air batteries

Wei Wang,Jialin Gong,Qing Long,Haitao Wang,Junlin Huang,Wei Dang,Liang Chen,Gangyong Li,Zhaohui Hou,Wenyuan Xu

Taking into consideration the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the distinct three-phase environment of the electrode, it is crucial to optimize the surface structure of the electrocatalyst. This study employs a sol–gel approach to synthesize a Fe-Fe 3 N composite three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon framework (Fe-Fe 3 N/3DNC) and utilize it as the electrocatalyst for a zinc-air battery. The material possesses a multi-dimensional cross-linking frame structure comprised of one-dimensional and two-dimensional crosslinks, which effectively reduce the diffusion mean-free path of oxygen. Moreover, the iron–nitrogen site and nitrogen-rich carbon substrate both exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic activity for ORR. Consequently, a conventional liquid zinc-air battery utilizing this material as the air cathode catalyst exhibits a maximum power density of 242.8 mW cm −2 , surpassing that of commercial Pt/C. Additionally, DFT calculations further confirm the crucial enhancing influence of Fe 3 N in the Fe-Fe 3 N/3DNC composite on ORR. This research provides valuable insights for the development of ORR electrocatalysts with outstanding efficiency.

A core-shell structure MOF-derived carbon material FeMo@NPC-700 cathode with transition metal nitride for rapid tetracycline degradation in an electro-Fenton system: The role of Fe3N and the synergistic effect of Mo

Yushan Cao,Chuan Cao,Zhirong Sun,Xiang Hu

Calcination temperature affects the formation of metal species. By calcining nitrogen-doped Fe/Mo bimetallic MOF at a higher temperature (700 °C), a core-shell structure MOF-derived carbon material (FeMo@NPC-700) containing transition metal nitride (TMN) was successfully prepared and used as a cathode for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in the electro-Fenton system. Due to the high catalytic activity of TMN and the synergistic catalytic effect of Mo, the FeMo@NPC-700 cathode achieved 98.9% removal of TC within 30 min and 51% removal of total organic carbon (TOC) within 60 min. It was verified that Fe 3 N played an important role in the degradation of TC, contributing 68% to the degradation. In addition, quantitative analysis of the reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in the system showed that ·OH was the main ROS dominating the degradation of tetracycline. Finally, four possible pathways of TC degradation were proposed based on HPLC-MS analysis, and the toxicity of the intermediates was analyzed by ecological active-structure relationship. This study provides a reference for the preparation of MOF-derived carbon materials containing TMN.

Fe3N-decorated porous carbon frameworks from wheat flour with dual enzyme-mimicking activities for organic pollutant degradation

Qi Fang,Quanyi Liu,Yu Zhang,Yan Du

Organic pollutants produced during industrial production are putting more stress on natural water resources. It is a considerable challenge to realize water remediation from organic pollutants in a cost-effective way. Here, we report a feasible method to fabricate Fe3N-decorated porous carbon frameworks (F/M-Fe) by one-step pyrolysis of wheat flour, melamine and metal ions. The prepared F/M-Fe possessing intrinsic peroxidase (POD)- and catalase (CAT)-like activities could effectively remove organic pollutants, which could be deduced from the degradation of methylene blue trihydrate (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and tetracycline (TC) as pollutant simulants, as well as excess H2O2 without consuming additional resources and energy. The degradation process was facilitated by the primary active intermediates of ˙OH and 1O2 in the catalytic pathway, with efficiencies of 95.8% for MB, 91.6% for RhB, and 92.3% for TC achieved within 10, 50, and 70 min, respectively. Thanks to the encouraging recycling behavior and well-conditioned tolerance, F/M-Fe shows satisfactory catalytic performance on a proof-of-concept filter-type device for MB degradation. In addition, F/M-Fe could reduce organic pollutants to a safe level, under which zebrafish can survive well, which exhibited the potential value of F/M-Fe in water remediation.

Xin Meng,Songrui Wang,Shuaihao Tang,Bingwu Zhou,Yuehua Zhang,Zequan Wang,Hongyi Kang,Jiyuan Zhang,Shuangyu Jiang,Fanpeng Kong,Bing Li,Jue Gong,Xingang Zhao,Jiajun Wang,Haiping Xu

Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs exhibits half-wave potential at 0.92 V. • Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs shows a shift of only 15 mV after 30k cycles. • DFT and in-stiu Raman confirm Fe-Fe 3 N tunes adsorption energy to enhance ORR activity. • Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs-assembled ZABs have excellent potential for applications. : Interface engineering is regarded as a pivotal technique for overcoming the activity-stability trade-off in Fe-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Herein, a bifunctional catalyst of Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs heterostructure is synthesized through a simple one-step calcination method. The catalyst exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.92 V vs RHE for ORR with only 15 mV decay over 30k cycles and overpotential of 310 mV for OER. In-situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) reveal that the electronic modulation of Fe-Fe 3 N hetero-interface activates Fe-N and C-N dual sites synergistically and achieves optimal intermediate adsorption strength, significantly lowering energy barrier of rate determine step. The assembled zinc–air batteries (ZABs) with Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs exhibit a high power density of 252.5 mW cm -2 and remarkable durability of 2400 h, while the corresponding flexible solid-state ZABs deliver excellent rate capability and robust stability over 1000 cycles. This work provides new insights into the design of advanced heterostructure electrocatalysts for practical energy storage applications. The prepared Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs composite catalyst leverages the synergistic effect between Fe and Fe 3 N, which optimizes both the structure and electron density. The unique structure significantly enhances the ORR/OER activity, enabling zinc–air batteries to achieve high power density, high specific capacity, and exceptional cycle life, demonstrating substantial promise for energy conversion and storage applications. Interface engineering of metal sulfides-based composites enables high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Shunchao Wang,Sibing Xie,Man Zhang,Yongjie Jiang,Huwen Luo,Jun Tang,Fenghua Zheng,Qingyu Li,Hongqiang Wang,Qichang Pan

Metal sulfides (MSs) have attracted much attention as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high sodium storage capacity. However, the unsatisfactory electrochemical performance induced by the huge volume change and sluggish kinetics hampered the practical application of SIBs. Herein, guided by the heterostructure interface engineering, novel multicomponent metal sulfide-based anodes, including SnS, FeS, and Fe 3 N embedded in N -doped carbon nanosheets (SnS/FeS/Fe 3 N/NC NSs), have been synthesized for high-performance SIBs. The as-prepared SnS/FeS/Fe 3 N/NC NSs with abundant heterointerfaces and high conductivity of N -doped carbon nanosheet matrix can shorten the Na + diffusion path and promote reaction kinetics during the sodiation/desodiation process. Moreover, the presence of Fe 3 N can promote the reversible conversion of SnS and FeS during the cycling process. As a consequence, when evaluated as anode materials for SIBs, the SnS/FeS/Fe 3 N/NC NSs can maintain a high sodium storage capacity of 473.6 mAh g -1 after 600 cycles at 2.0 A g -1 and can still provide a high reversible capacity of 537.4 mAh g -1 even at 5.0 A g -1 This discovery offers a novel strategy for constructing metal sulfide-based anode materials for high-performance SIBs.

Highly dispersed Al-Fe3N species in MCM-41 for water treatment through high-efficient PDS activation

Zhouxiao Zhai,Jingce Bi,Linshan Wang,Ningning Liu,Yi Wang,Xia Zhang,Zhuopeng Wang,Yide Han

Mesoporous molecular sieve-supported metals have been widely investigated as catalysts for the removal of tetracycline (TC) from water via a “preconcentration-activation-degradation” catalytic system. However, the design and construction of bimetallic catalysts supported on MCM-41 for TC degradation remains a challeng. In this study, highly dispersed Al-Fe 3 N species within MCM-41(Al-Fe 3 N/Al-MCM-41) was successfully prepared, where Al originates from Al-MCM-41 subjected to high-temperature dealumination. In the presence of Al-Fe 3 N/Al-MCM-41 and PDS, 98.5% of TC was efficiently degraded within 60 min. The corresponding reaction rate constant (0.07262 min −1 ) was 2.92 times that of Fe 3 N/MCM-41 (0.02486 min −1 ). The excellent degradation performance is attributed to the enhanced electron cloud density of Fe induced by Al doping, thereby enhancing the activation efficiency of peroxydisulfate (PDS). At the same time, micro–mesoporous structure in Al-Fe 3 N/Al-MCM-41 is beneficial to preconcentration of target contaminants for the enhancement of degradation efficiency. In addition, the disinfection performance of Al-Fe 3 N/Al-MCM-41 system against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and its device-level application were explored. This work provides a novel strategy to fabricate MCM-41 with doping Fe 3 N species for the water treatment. This strategy provides a new perspective for the rational utilization of Al atoms via high-temperature dealumination method.

Interfacial electronic transfer triggered dual-site synergistic catalysis on Fe3N/C for efficient H2O2 electro-synthesis

Xingquan Jiang,Xiaoming Li,Jingde Li,Lanlan Wu,Yanqin Yang,Xiaohang Du

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) is pivotal for the decentralized production of hydrogen peroxide. Herein, we present a high-performance catalyst composed of highly dispersed Fe 3 N nanoparticles anchored on hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets (Fe 3 N@HPC), derived from petroleum pitch. In situ infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the robust electronic interaction between Fe 3 N nanoparticles and heteroatom (N/O)-activated carbon atoms establishes dual active sites comprising both Fe 3 N and carbon atoms, while shifting the d-band center of Fe sites down to −1.18 eV. This electronic modulation effectively weakens the adsorption strength of the *OOH intermediate on Fe sites, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier and promoting the 2e − pathway through suppressing O–O bond cleavage. Simultaneously, the Fe 3 N nanoparticles induce local charge redistribution, leading to the formation of positively charged carbon atoms, which collectively enhances both the selectivity and activity for H 2 O 2 production. Coupled with the enhanced mass transport from the hierarchical pores, the Fe 3 N@HPC catalyst exhibits exceptional performance. In a 0.1 M KOH H-cell, it achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 production rate of 1621 mmol·g cat −1 h −1 with 87.7 % Faradaic efficiency (FE) at 0.5 V (vs. RHE). When configured in a flow cell with 1 M KOH, it maintains a high production rate of 2315 mmol·g cat −1 h −1 (79.5 % FE) at 0.5 V (vs. RHE) and demonstrates outstanding stability over 120 h of continuous operation at 0 V (vs. RHE), showing promising application potential for industrial H 2 O 2 electro-synthesis.

Rational construction of 3D porous Fe3N@C frameworks for high-performance sodium-ion half/full batteries

Chen Chen,Qilin Hu,Hongyu Xue,Shuya Chang,Keyi Zhang,Qingfan Cui,Hailong Yan,Tao Peng,Yongsong Luo

Metal nitrides have excellent electrical property and high theoretical capacities, which have great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the inferior air stability and serious pulverization problems are urgent to be solved for their applications. Herein, the three-dimensional porous Fe 3 N@carbon frameworks (Fe 3 N@C/3DPCF) composed of Fe 3 N nanoparticles and hierarchical porous carbon network were synthesized by the sol-gel and post-annealing method at 500 °C with the polystyrene spheres as soft templates. The hierarchical porous carbon structure can protect Fe 3 N nanoparticles from the air oxidation , accommodate the volumetric expansion of Fe 3 N, and accelerate the diffusion of electrolytes and the transmission of electrons during Na + insertion and extraction processes. Meanwhile, the interface coupling effect between Fe 3 N nanoparticles and porous carbon further improved the electrochemical performance and structural integrity of the electrode. The Fe 3 N@C/3DPCF electrode for sodium-ion battery exhibited a reversible capacity of 494.6 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , long cycle life over 1000 times, and high rate capacity of 310 mA h g −1 at 2 A g −1 . Moreover, the full cell and flexile cell assembled with pre-sodiated Fe 3 N@C/3DPCF as anode and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C as cathode respectively delivered the discharge specific capacities of 351.2 and 390.5 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . Therefore, this work will pave the way for the air unstable conversion materials for the applications as sodium-ion battery anode.

Stepped Porous Carbon-Multilayer Graphene@Fe3C/Fe3N Membrane to Inhibit the Polysulfides Shuttle for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Zhentao Nie,Kui Xu,Yufei Lu,Hongjian Zhang,Haodong Liu,Feng Xu,Yibo Yan,Jingsan Xu,Jixin Zhu

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are regarded as one of the most prominent future-oriented energy battery systems due to their high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg −1 ). However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides and short cycle life have critically hindered their commercialization. Herein, a stepped porous heterostructured membrane of carbon-multilayer graphene (MG)@Fe 3 C/Fe 3 N is developed by a facile phase inversion method and applied as a current collector to replace Al foil. The special heterostructured membrane with MG can further boost the charge/Li + ion transfer speed while accommodating the volume expansion in the charge/discharge cycle. The shuttle effect of polysulfides is inhibited by the heterostructure phase of the Fe 3 C/Fe 3 N catalytic effect and chemisorption. This synergistic effect is confirmed by density function theory (DFT) calculations. As a result, the C-MG@Fe 3 C/Fe 3 N membranes delivers distinguished discharge capacity and cycling stability of 508.92 mAh g −1 (693.47 mAh g −1 ) at a large discharge of current of 2 C (at 0.5 C) after 400 cycles (300 cycles) with only 0.36% capacity attenuation per cycle.

Bio-inspired Design of Hierarchically Porous ZIF-8 derived Fe-N-C Bifunctional Catalysts for Enhanced Zinc-Air Battery Performance

Hao Lu,Xianchu Wang,Chenyu Wang,Qihang Wang,Jingjing Xie,Weiming Wang,Zhengyi Fu,Zhaoyong Zou

Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF-8) has emerged as promising candidate for alleviating the aggregation of Fe 3 N-catalysts, exhibiting significantly improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for rechargeable zinc-air batteries. To further improve the catalytic performance, it is crucial to fabricate ZIF-8 with hierarchically porous structures, which remains challenging due to the rapid crystallization kinetics and the weak interactions. Inspired by biological porous materials, we developed a novel method using 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene TMB as a mediating molecule to dynamically regulate the organic-inorganic interface between templates and ZIF-8 precursors, achieving the micro-meso-macropores of ZIF-8, which synergistically enhances mass transport and active site accessibility. Additionally, TMB preserves the weakly alkaline environment required for ZIFs’ structural integrity by leveraging its hydrophobic co-solvent effect. The as-synthesized Fe 3 N-HPZIF-8 catalyst integrates Fe 3 N active sites, hierarchically porous structures, and pyrrolic-N dopants, resulting in the exceptional bifunctional activity in alkaline media (ΔE = 0.619 V), exceeding most benchmark catalysts. When integrated into zinc-air batteries, a peak power density of 205.2 mW cm -2 is achieved. This work presents a generalizable synthetic approach for high-performance metal-air battery catalysts.

Decoupling Active Sites for Aqueous-Phase Reforming of Methanol: Efficient CO-Free Hydrogen Production Over a Designed Tandem Pt/Fe5C2:Fe3N@C Catalyst

Li Xiaolong,Zhang Yahui,Sun Gangqun,Sun Manni,Wang Xiru,Yang Zhiyan,Zhao Zhuoya,Li Mengjie,Ma Yongning,Huang Wei,Zhu Junli,Yang Yuhao

The development of high-performance catalysts enabling CO-free hydrogen production via aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) is crucial for integrated methanol-to-hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cell systems. Herein, a tandem Pt/Fe 5 C 2 :Fe 3 N@C catalyst was prepared via a temperature-programmed carbonization-nitridation method followed by photoreduction deposition. Remarkably, the catalyst delivers efficient CO-free H 2 production even at temperatures as high as 210 ° C. The catalyst features a strong metal–support interaction between Pt and Fe 5 C 2 , and a weaker interaction between Pt and Fe 3 N. Mechanistic investigations decouple the functions of the individual components. The carbon support primarily serves to disperse the active components. The Pt–Fe interface provides the active sites for methanol decomposition (CH 3 OH → CO + 2H 2 ). The resulting CO is completely consumed through two subsequent reactions: most undergoes the water–gas shift reaction (CO + H 2 O → CO 2 + H 2 ) on the surfaces of Fe 3 N and Fe 5 C 2 , with Fe 3 N being the dominant active phase, while the remaining trace CO undergoes methanation (CO + 3H 2 → CH 4 + H 2 O), for which Fe 5 C 2 is the principal active site. This synergistic cascade of reactions enables the Pt/Fe 5 C 2 :Fe 3 N@C catalyst to achieve highly efficient CO-free hydrogen production from APRM. This work offers insights into designing catalysts for CO-free hydrogen generation from alcohol-based liquid organic hydrogen carriers and may accelerate the integrated industrialization of the methanol-to-hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cell technology.
