Bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogels provide a renewable biological macromolecular scaffold for constructing functional separation media due to their three dimensional nanofibrous network and abundant hydroxyl groups. In this study, BC derived composite aerogels were developed via a multiscale functional coordination approach, incorporating Fe 3 O 4 @PDA nanoparticles and silane derived hydrophobic domains into the cellulose framework. The BC macromolecular network preserved the porous architecture and supplied reactive sites for PDA mediated anchoring and silane condensation, while Fe 3 O 4 @PDA and FAS/MTMS enhanced interfacial adhesion, surface roughness, magnetic recoverability, and water repellency. The resulting composite aerogel exhibited excellent comprehensive performance, such as acid and alkali resistance, thermal stability, and self-cleaning ability. It retained over 80% recovery after 100 compression cycles at 50% strain and displayed outstanding hydrophobic and oleophilic behavior (water contact angle 161.9°) in oil/water separation. The adsorption capacities for oils and organic solvents were ranged from 20.73 to 48.21 g/g with over 85% capacity retention after 50 adsorption/desorption cycles and a continuous separation efficiency of 99.93%.

Pathogenic infections pose a major threat to global public health, and what's worse is that the bacteria in infected places often exist in the form of biofilms, making it impossible for antibiotics and other contact bactericidal substances to penetrate their interior. Therefore, looking for an effective method with synergistic antibacterial and biofilm removal properties is a key challenge. A kind of magnetic MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheets with antibacterial properties of photothermal magnetic coupling are reported in this paper. Fe 3 O 4 was grown in situ on MXene nanosheets and then coated with a layer of polydopamine (PDA). MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA nanosheet (120 μg/mL) showed an over 95% inhibition rate against E. coli and S. aureus under 808 nm laser irradiation. In addition, peroxidase-like activity can produce reactive oxygen species. The photothermal antibacterial properties were further enhanced under the action of rotating magnetic field. The antibacterial activity was increased to close to 99.99%, and the removal effect of biofilm was also very good. The photothermal and magnetic coupled antibacterial effects can reduce the amount of MXene@Fe 3 O 4 /PDA, thus it is expected to reduce the damage caused by overheating normal tissues and is safer than pure photothermal therapy.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is extensively utilized as an industrial chemical in the production of certain plastics and epoxy resins. They are frequently found in environmental water and have the potential to cause risks to both the environment and human health. To efficiently remove the endocrine disruptor BPA from aqueous solutions, sea urchin-like magnetic material Fe3O4@PDA@NH2-MIL-101 (Fe) was synthesized via hydrothermal methods. Fe3O4@PDA@NH2-MIL-101 (Fe) has excellent adsorption performance, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 300.47 mg/g for BPA. The adsorption kinetics of BPA by Fe3O4@PDA@NH2-MIL-101 (Fe) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Liu’s isotherm model. Magnetic separation experiments reveal a high recovery efficiency, maintaining 94.82% of its initial adsorption capacity after five cycles. The primary adsorption mechanisms of Fe3O4@PDA@NH2-MIL-101 (Fe) on BPA included pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π interaction, and Lewis acid–base interaction. Additionally, the material showed excellent removal performance of BPA, with a maximum adsorbed amount of 135.27 mg/g for total organic carbon (TOC) in the shale gas fracturing flowback fluid. These findings suggest that Fe3O4@PDA@NH2-MIL-101 (Fe) holds significant potential as an adsorbent for BPA removal from actual wastewater, offering promising prospects for practical applications.

● Recombinant BTI was immobilized on PDA-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. ● Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI enabled one-step trypsin purification from porcine pancreatic homogenate. ● The maximum trypsin adsorption capacity was 13.78 ± 0.34 mg/g. A magnetic affinity adsorbent, Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI, was prepared by immobilizing recombinant buckwheat trypsin inhibitor (BTI) on polydopamine (PDA)-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, BTI-loading analysis, and retained inhibitory activity collectively supported the successful construction of the material. The adsorbent recovered trypsin from porcine pancreatic extract in a single batch purification step, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.78 ± 0.34 mg/g. Fe₃O₄@PDA@BTI retained more than 90% of its inhibitory activity at pH 4–10, more than 85% of its inhibitory activity after 3 h at 30–80 ℃, and approximately 94% after 30 d at 4 ℃. It also exhibited good stability against ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), urea, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). However, the relative adsorption capacity decreased to 45.35 ± 0.19% after 10 reuse cycles, indicating that ligand coupling and regeneration require further optimization. These results demonstrate the feasibility of combining recombinant inhibitor recognition with magnetic recovery for trypsin purification.

A facile methodology is presented to construct a multifunctional nanocomposite that integrates photothermal therapy and specific drug release into a single nanostructure. Firstly, magnetic Fe3O4@polydopamine core–shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA) were synthesized via a reversed-phase microemulsion approach. By varying the amount of DA, Fe3O4@PDA with a particle size of 28–38 nm can be obtained. To further ensure the monodispersity, biocompatibility and specific uptake, PEG and lactobionic acid (LA) were grafted onto Fe3O4@PDA (LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG), whose fast photothermal conversion is derived by the combination of Fe3O4 and PDA with high near infrared (NIR) absorption. Then, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was adopted as the typical anticancer drug, which was loaded onto LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG via electrostatic and π–π stacking interaction. The release kinetics investigation further demonstrated the acid/heat-triggered DOX release. HepG2 cells (hepatocellular cell line) were used as the target cancer cells, and the fast uptake was due to the nanoparticle size and abundant asialoglycoprotein receptors on HepG2 cells. Besides, an external magnetic field also can improve the uptake, especially when the magnet is placed at the bottom of the cell disk. The enhanced specific cytotoxicity toward HepG2 cells was also ascribed to the synergistic effect of chemo- and photothermal therapy. Based on the novel properties, the LA-Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-DOX nanocomposite showed its potential application in hepatocyte therapy.

Highly effective enrichment of phosphorylated biomolecules is vital for an in depth and comprehensive phosphoproteome analysis. Among affinity materials, materials based on the immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) method are most commonly used in phosphopeptide enrichment. However, the problem of metal cation loss in IMAC materials is still a challenge. In this study, a novel strategy has been developed for both highly effective enrichment of phosphorylated biomolecules and prevention of metal cation loss using Fe3O4/polydopamine/poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride)/arginine (Fe3O4/PDA/PAMA–Arg) composite nanospheres. The magnetic composite nanospheres were prepared by a facile method, possessing uniform morphology, a high saturation magnetization (45 emu g−1), and a quick magnetic response (within 10 s). Noticeably, abundant guanidyl and amino groups of the PAMA–Arg brushes endowed the nanospheres with extremely high detection sensitivity (0.2 fmol), excellent selectivity (β-casein/BSA = 1 : 500), and high recyclability (5 cycles) in phosphopeptide analysis. Furthermore, the Fe3O4/PDA/PAMA–Arg nanospheres exhibited specific separation capacity towards β-casein or ovalbumin (OVA) in the model protein mixture and remarkably selective enrichment performance for phosphorylated biomolecules in real biological samples (egg white, nonfat milk, and rat brain lysate), showing great potential for trace biological detection and proteomics analysis.

Due to the rapid development of information technology and the trend toward miniaturization of electronic equipment, the research on electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials is rapidly moving toward low-dimensional, core–shell, and lightweight directions, with a wide range of application prospects in various fields. In this study, using pDA as a binder, poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)/Fe3O4@pDA@Ag nanofiber membranes (NFMs) with a multicore–shell structure were prepared by in situ growth of Ag nanoparticle (NP) layers on the fiber surface of electrospun PVDF/Fe3O4 NFMs fabricated in batch. Compared to PVDF@pDA@Ag NFM, the average EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of PVDF/Fe3O4@pDA@Ag NFM reached 82.31 dB because of the increased hysteresis and multireflection losses inside the NFM caused by the moderate addition of Fe3O4 NPs. In addition, the synergistic effect of Fe3O4 and Ag NPs increased the microwave attenuation and impedance matching of composite NFM, further enhancing its EMI SE.

Multistimuli-responsive vehicles that deliver drugs in temporal-, spatial- and dosage-controlled manners have developed as a potential platform in tumor therapy. However, how to integrate these functions in one single carrier effectively still presents a lot of challenge. Here, we developed a strategy to construct a photothermal and pH responsive platform based on Zn 2+ coordination with doxorubicin (DOX) and polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-Zn 2+ -DOX NPs). In this architecture, Fe 3 O 4 @PDA nanoparticles triggered photothermal effects for tumor hyperthermia, and Zn 2+ coordinated DOX was released in responding to the thermal effect to achieve chemotherapy simultaneously. Moreover, DOX release was further promoted at acidic environment due to the pH sensitivity of Zn 2+ coordination. Therefore, our system possesses multiple effects in tumor treatment: photothermal therapy with near infrared lighting (NIR), thermosensitive DOX release for chemotherapy, and pH-responsive DOX release to enhance deeper therapy in tumor acidic microenvironment. Our in vivo results provide the evidence that Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-Zn 2+ -DOX NPs upon laser exposure have effective anti-tumor therapeutic activity, indicating this platform is suitable for enhanced chemo-photothermal synergistic tumor therapy.

We demonstrated a simple approach for fabricating Au–Fe3O4/PDA hollow nanoparticles as high-performance catalysts for water purification. The polydopamine (PDA) shell was in situ formed on the silica surface from self-polymerization, which acts as a medium support for coupling with metal ions (for Fe3O4 nanoparticle deposition) as well as a reducing agent and stabilizer for Au nanoparticle reduction and deposition. A step of simultaneous Fe3O4 nanoparticle deposition and silica core removal under alkaline conditions is first introduced in this study. This process significantly simplifies previous strategies which typically require the use of poisonous agents such as hydrogen fluoride or additional complicated post-treatment steps. Under optimized conditions, the Au–Fe3O4/PDA hollow nanoparticles show a high saturation magnetization of 18.8 emu g−1 and an excellent catalytic performance for the rapid reduction of p-nitrophenol with the reaction kinetic constant of 0.34 min−1. This catalyst can be easily recovered using a permanent magnet and recycled eight times with a high catalytic cycle stability. The strategy presented in this work provides a facile and versatile approach towards designing complicated Au–Fe3O4/PDA hollow nanostructures, which might have great potential for many applications within biological, energy, and environmental technologies.

As a newly appeared biomimetic platform and universal surface modification agent, polydopamine (PDA) has been paid great attention recently. However, the fabrication of multifunctional hollow PDA-based nanostructures remains a challenge and has been rarely reported. Herein, a facile method to prepare multifunctional hollow Fe3O4/PDA@Ag spherical composites is reported. The in situ embedding of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the formation of a PDA shell have been achieved in a single system employing carboxylic-capped polystyrene (PS-COOH) spheres as a hard template, which can be selectively dissolved by tetrahydrofuran. Subsequently, silver nanoparticles were anchored on the PDA surface via in situ reduction by the PDA layers, leading to a multifunctional hollow PDA-based composite, i.e., Fe3O4/PDA@Ag. This newly prepared composite could efficiently catalyze the degradation of 4-nitrophenol and rhodamine B with NaBH4 as a reducing agent, and the reaction rate constants were calculated using the pseudo-first-order reaction equation. Compared to non-hollow PS@Fe3O4/PDA@Ag, the hollow composite exhibited an enhanced performance toward both reactions without a significant loss in activity even after ten cycles. This multifunctional hollow PDA-based composite may find potential applications in other domains like heavy metal removal or antibacterial applications.

The bacteria, which usually contaminate water environment, often cause terrible infectious diseases thus seriously threaten people’s health. To meet the increasing requirement of the public health care, an easily separable nanomaterial with sustainable anti-bacteria performance is required. This work reports a Fe3O4@PDA/Ag/PDA core-shell nanosphere in which the Ag nanocrystals immobilized on the magnetic carrier are protected by an external polydopamine (PDA) layer. The magnetic hybrid nanospheres are constructed by a tunable coating method and the particle parameters can be effectively controlled by the experimental condition. The antibacterial potential of the nanospheres is evaluable by using theStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia colias the models. The results indicate the Fe3O4@PDA/Ag/PDA core-shell nanospheres have a high antibacterial performance by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. Finally, the product is expected to have a sustainable activity because the protecting PDA layer reduce the releasing rate of the Ag+ions and the materials can be magnetically recovered from the media after the disinfection procedure.Keywords:core-shell;magnetic;Ag;antibacterial;polydopamine

The detection of fipronil (FPN), a widely used insecticide, in environmental and food matrices is crucial owing to its possible harmful repercussions on human health and ecological systems. This study introduces an innovative signal amplification strategy employing Fe3O4@polydopamine (Fe3O4@PDA) nanoparticles to substantially augment SPR sensitivity in FPN detection and enhance the overall detection performance. Utilizing an indirect competitive inhibition assay, we constructed a sensing platform in which antigens were immobilized on a PDA-modified gold film integrated with reduced gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Concurrently, fipronil antibodies (FPN-Ab) were conjugated to Fe3O4@PDA, forming magnetic immunoprobes that facilitate the precise capture, magnetic separation, and enrichment of FPN. This methodology achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.52 nM and a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 30.10 nM within a linear range of 18.3–146.4 nM. Experimental results validated the method's efficacy in quantifying FPN residues in real samples, including milk and tap water, demonstrating excellent repeatability and specificity. These findings underscore the potential of the Fe3O4@PDA-based SPR platform as an ultrasensitive and dependable means for FPN detection in diverse environmental and food matrices, addressing the critical need for accurate and efficient monitoring of pesticide residues.
