The instability of the interfacial structure during the synthesis of iron carbodiimide (FeNCN) leads to a decline in its electrochemical performance during cycling. By depositing FeF 3 particles on the surface of FeNCN, the in-situ transformation of this FeF 3 nanolayer into a FeF 2 nanolayer effectively utilizes the discharge product Fe 0 . This process constructs a mechanically stable sandwich-structured SEI film, thereby enhancing the stability of the FeNCN electrode interface. Consequently, the FeNCN electrode exhibits a capacity of 350.54 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , with a capacity retention rate of 99.54 %. This strategy provides crucial theoretical and technical insights for regulating carbodiimide-based materials to achieve stable, long-cycle performance in electrode materials.

Metal fluoride–lithium batteries with potentially high-energy densities are regarded as promising candidates for next-generation low-cost rechargeable batteries. However, liquid-electrolyte metal fluoride–lithium batteries suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics, high voltage hysteresis due to side reactions, poor rate capability, and rapid capacity drop during cycling. Moreover, the research on sulfide all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with metal fluoride cathode is still lacking. Herein, four kinds of iron fluoride materials are applied to the sulfide all-solid-state lithium battery system for the first time to investigate the best cathode and corresponding methods. Electrochemical tests showed the cycling performance at different current densities (0.1, 0.3, and 1 C) and rate performance of the four cathodes with the following rules: FeF 3 -HT > FeF 3 -RT > FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O > FeF 3 ·3H 2 O. The reversible capacities of FeF 3 -HT AASB are 519.9 mAh g −1 after 120 cycles at 0.3C and still maintains 340.7 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles even at a high rate of 1 C. In addition, electro impedence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests of the above four cathodes show that different contents of crystal water, morphologies, and particle sizes have a great influence on the lithium storage mechanism of cathode. Moreover, the reason for the FeF 3 -HT cathode's superior specific capacity and rate performance compared with other cathodes at high current densities is revealed, according to cyclic voltammogram tests under different scan rates. The cause is that FeF 3 -HT has the highest proportion of the contribution capacity of the cathode surface control process. The above research opens up a new avenue for FeF 3 -HT, FeF 3 -RT, FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O, and FeF 3 ·3H 2 O cathodes in sulfide ASSBs.

Iron trifluoride demonstrates poor performance as a multi-electron conversion positive electrode in conventional ester-based electrolytes, yet exhibits higher capacity retention in ether-based electrolytes. This contrast has long remained unresolved in high-energy-density metal fluoride-lithium batteries. Here, we show that the electrolyte-dependent behavior originates from interfacial anion competition within the cathode-electrolyte interphase. Spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses reveal that anions derived from lithium salts preferentially interact with iron species, governing interfacial conversion pathways and phase evolution. In ether-based electrolytes, lithium sulfide and lithium oxide react with iron to form electrochemically active iron sulfide species, sustaining reversible cycling. In contrast, lithium carbonate formed in ester-based electrolytes leads to inert carbonate-rich iron species, resulting in surface passivation and capacity decay. With prolonged cycling, iron trifluoride gradually evolves into thermodynamically stable iron-based phases, highlighting that interfacial anion chemistry dictates long-term phase evolution and degradation pathways of iron-based fluoride conversion electrodes.

Lithium metal is regarded as the most promising anode material for high energy density secondary batteries because of its high theoretical specific capacity and low redox potential. Nevertheless, its practical application is severely hindered by poor interfacial stability and uncontrollable dendrite growth. An inorganic/organic composite SEI by coating applied to the surface of Li metal (named FeF 3 -PAA@Li) is created through a chemical in-situ treatment method for the Li metal with a solution including PAA and FeF 3 , which is made of a flexible LiPAA organic matrix in which rigid LiF, FeF 2 , and Li Fe alloy inorganic nanoparticles are embedded. The soft LiPAA matrix acts as a chemically inert and stretchable skin, effectively accommodating volume changes and avoiding additional parasitic reactions. Meanwhile, the inorganic nanoparticles provide enhanced structural robustness to impede proliferation of Li dendrites and enable uniform Li + distribution for even Li electroplating. Thus, both Li O 2 cells and Li||Li symmetric cells incorporating FeF 3 -PAA@Li show a low overpotential and consistent cycling stability. This SEI design offers a viable pathway for enabling stable and high-efficiency Li O 2 batteries in practical settings.

The FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O cathode material can exhibit a high capacity and high energy density through transfer of multiple electrons in the conversion reaction and has attracted great attention from researchers. However, the low conductivity of FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O greatly restricts its application. Generally, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene can be used as conductive networks to improve the conductivities of active materials. In this work, the FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O cathode material was synthesized via a liquid-phase method, and the FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O/CNT + graphene nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by introduction of CNTs and graphene conductive networks. The electrochemical results illustrate that FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O/CNT + graphene nanocomposite delivers a high discharge capacity of 234.2 mAh g −1 in the voltage range of 1.8–4.5 V (vs. Li + /Li) at 0.1 C rate, exhibits a prominent cycling performance (193.1 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles at 0.2 C rate), and rate capability (140.4 mAh g −1 at 5 C rate). Therefore, the electronic conductivity and electrochemical performance of the FeF 3 ·0.33H 2 O cathode material modified with CNTs and graphene composite conductive network can be effectively improved.

Conventional intercalation-type cathodes for lithium batteries are plagued by rapid capacity decay and unsatisfactory cycling lifespans when operating at subzero temperatures. Conversion-type iron fluoride seems to compensate for these setbacks due to its dramatic theoretical capacity via a three-electron transfer mechanism, but suffers from an irreversible solid–solid phase transition with the collapse of the charge-transporting tunnel and insulating LiF precipitation over the cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer. Herein, we propose a metal–organic framework in situ etching-fluorination strategy to construct a porous micron-brick monolithic grain cathode with rich heterojunctions of hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) FeF3 and rutile FeF2 with an epitaxial intergrowth mode. Owing to the optimized configuration with a self-healing built-in interfacial electric field, open diffusional channels, as well as topotactic conversion and catalyzing functions of FeF2 on Li–F splitting, this heterostructure fluoride enables a high energy density (1114 Wh kg–1 at 215 W kg–1) and high-rate performance (337 mAh g–1 at 1000 mA g–1) at room temperature. These effects also endow the cathode with outstanding low-temperature performance with an average capacity of 170 mAh g–1 for 100 cycles and a discharge capacity of 50 mAh under a 6-layer pouch cell configuration at −20 °C.

The relatively low theoretical capacity of conventional cathodes has become one of the key bottlenecks in developing high-energy-density lithium batteries. Iron(III) fluoride (FeF3) cathodes are viable candidates for next-generation energy storage applications by virtue of their elevated theoretical specific capacity derived from conversion-type electrochemistry; nonetheless, their practical realization remains critically impeded by intrinsically poor electronic transport properties and substantial volumetric dilation. Herein, we employed a microfluidic assembly strategy to develop an FeF3/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite fabric (FGF) electrode featuring a three-dimensional network structure. In this architecture, rGO sheets are interconnected to form confined spaces that tightly encapsulate FeF3 nanoparticles into egg-roll-like structural fibers, which are further bridged to create a porous network fabric structure. Benefiting from the high conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, and moderate sheet size of rGO sheets, the resulting three-dimensional network structure not only overcomes the low conductivity of FeF3, enabling rapid electron transport, but also effectively suppresses the volume expansion and dissolution-migration of FeF3 particles during charge–discharge processes. Consequently, the as-formed FGF The electrode demonstrated superior electrochemical behavior, maintaining 98% of its initial capacity across the current density range of 0.5–5 A·g–1. Following 1000 charge–discharge cycles at 0.7 A·g–1, the active material preserved a reversible specific capacity of 72 mAh·g–1. This work not only provides an effective strategy for iron fluoride-based conversion cathodes, but also offers insights into the structural regulation of graphene frameworks for high-energy-density lithium–ion batteries, highlighting the critical importance of fluorinated graphene architectures in next-generation cathode design.

Conversion-reaction metal fluoride cathodes have the advantages of low cost, environmental friendliness, and high energy density. However, their tailored synthesis and structure design under safe, facile, and scalable conditions have always been a puzzle, which limits the popularization of conversion-type cathodes in lithium metal batteries. To address these challenges, here an iron fluoride heterostructure with FeF 2 and FeF 3 binary phases is proposed and prepared by deep eutectic solvent method under the assistance of cobalt cation as an oxidization promoter. The compact heterogeneous contact between tetragonal FeF 2 and hexagonal tungsten bronze FeF 3 phases enables the promotion and stabilization of interface charge transfer and topotactic conversion reaction. The narrower band gap of FeF 2 , higher theoretical capacity and thermodynamic potential of FeF 3 synergistically contribute to the balance between cycling reversibility and capacity. The heterostructure cathode with an optimized molar ratio of FeF 2 /FeF 3 can realize a highly reversible capacity of ≈520 mAh g −1 in the first tens of cycles and 305 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. The typical two-stage reaction plateaus are well preserved even under the high current density of 1000 mA g −1 . The green synthesis strategy and heterostructure fluoride design open a new horizon for the development of high-energy-density metal fluoride batteries.

Incorporating conversion-type cathodes such as iron trifluoride (FeF3) into sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) can significantly enhance the energy density. However, challenges such as interfacial side reactions and volume-change-induced poor physical contact between sulfide electrolytes and FeF3 limit their application. Herein, a yolk–shell (YS) structure with FeF3 as the yolk and fluorine (F)-doped carbon as the shell was successfully designed. Thanks to this electrode design, the ASSLBs achieve a discharge capacity of 318 mAh·g–1 after 400 cycles at 0.2 C, facilitated by the optimized void space in the shell. Moreover, ASSLBs demonstrate excellent cycling life and capacity retention across a broad temperature range from 0 °C (140 mAh·g–1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C) to 60 °C (410 mAh·g–1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C). Postanalysis indicates that the shell effectively not only mitigates interfacial side reactions but also accommodates the volume expansion of FeF3 during cycling while maintaining excellent contact between the shell and the sulfide electrolyte. This chemically and physically stable interface ensures the good cycling reversibility of FeF3. This work underscores the critical importance of YS structural design in stabilizing the interface between conversion-type cathodes and solid electrolytes, thereby accelerating the practical application of FeF3 cathodes with increased energy densities in ASSLBs.

The frustrating interfacial issue between Li metal anode and solid electrolyte is the main obstacle that restricts the commercial promotion of solid-state batteries. The garnet-type ceramic electrolyte with high stability against metallic Li has drawn much attention, but it also suffers from huge interfacial resistance and Li dendrite penetration due to the unavoidable formation of the carbonate passivation layer and limited interface contact. Herein, we propose a facile and effective method of flame vapor deposition to spray candle soot (CS) coating on the garnet surface. It enables the reduction of the carbonate layer and the conversion to a highly lithiophilic interlayer especially when in contact with molten Li. The lithiophilicity is rooted in the enrichment of graphitic polycrystalline domains in CS, which can be chemically or electrochemically lithiated to form the ionic/electronic dual-conductive network containing LiC6 moieties. The CS interlayer binds the Li metal with the garnet electrolyte tightly with gradual transition of Li-ion conductivity, leading to a significant reduction of the area-specific resistance to 50 Ω cm2 at 60 °C with high cycling and current endurance. Garnet-based symmetric cells and solid-state full cells conducting this strategy exhibit impressive electrochemical reversibility and durability under the preservation of the compact interface and smooth Li plating/stripping. The modified Li/garnet/FeF3 batteries exhibit a discharge capacity as high as 500 mA h g–1 and long-term cyclability for at least 1500 cycles (with capacity preserved at 281.7 and 201 mA h g–1 at 100 and 200 μA cm–2, respectively). This candle combustion strategy can be extended to more ceramic electrolytes compatible with high-temperature pretreatment.

Fluoride-based solid electrolytes (SEs) have emerged as a promising component for high-energy-density rechargeable solid-state batteries (SSBs) in view of their wide electrochemical window, high air stability, and interface compatibility, but they still face the challenge of low ion conductivity and the lack of a desired structure for sodium metal SSBs. Here, we report a sodium-rich heterostructure fluoride SE, Na3GaF6–Ga2O3–NaCl (NGFOC-G), synthesized via in situ oxidation of liquid metal gallium and in situ chlorination using low-melting GaCl3. The distinctive features of NGFOC-G include single-crystal Na3GaF6 domains within an open-framework structure, composite interface decoration of Ga2O3 and NaCl with a concentration gradient, exceptional air stability, and high electrochemical oxidation stability. By leveraging the penetration of gallium at NaF grain boundaries and the in situ self-oxidation to form Ga2O3 nanodomains, the solid-phase reaction kinetics of NaF and GaF3 is activated for facilitating the synthesis of main component Na3GaF6. The introduction of a small amount of a chlorine source during synthesis further softens and modifies the boundaries of Na3GaF6 along with Ga2O3. Benefiting from the enhanced interface ion transport, the optimized NGFOC-G exhibits an ionic conductivity up to 10–4 S/cm at 40 °C, which is the highest level reported among fluoride-based sodium-ion SEs. This SE demonstrates a “self-protection” mechanism, where the formation of a high Young’s modulus transition layer rich in NaF and Na2O under electrochemical driving prevents the dendrite growth of sodium metal. The corresponding Na/Na symmetric cells show minimal voltage hysteresis and stable cycling performance for at least 1000 h. The Na/NGFOC-G/Na3V2(PO4)3 cell demonstrates stable capacity release around 100 mAh/g at room temperature. The Na/NGFOC-G/FeF3 cell delivers a high capacity of 461 mAh/g with an excellent stability of conversion reaction cycling.
