MOF-Derived Porous Carbon-Supported Bimetallic Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Catalysts

Aimei Wang,Mingsheng Luo,Baozhong Lü,Yongji Song,Zhi Yang,Min Li,Buchang Shi,Iltaf Khan

Generally, incorporating different metals in a catalyst can provide a synergistic effect for enhancing the catalytic performance. However, the interaction between the two metals and the effect on the catalytic performance seem elusive. In this work, a bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) is synthesized, and then, a novel bimetallic catalyst is prepared for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The combination of these different metals and a MOF-derived porous carbon supporter offers a unique active surface structure that may lead to improved catalytic performance. Herein, alloy-type structures were observed in FeCo and FeNi bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts, while a solid solution with a spinel structure were observed in FeMn and FeZn bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts supported on MOF-derived porous carbon display stable and excellent catalytic performance during 100 h compared with a single-metal Fe catalyst. X-ray diffraction measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and H2 temperature-programed reduction were employed to study the synergistic effect of bimetallic components on surface composition and electronic and reduction properties accordingly. The relationship between catalytic performance and catalyst composition was deeply studied. These research work results will provide a new approach to design novel bimetallic FT catalysts.

Efficient oxidation of micropollutants by reactive FeMn hydr(oxy)oxides confined in membrane pores

Chunhui Du,Jingyuan Yu,Jianghuai Shi,Jiangyan Chen,Mengling Wu,Yanqing Cong,Guoqing Zhang,Xuchun Li

Manganese oxides with specific reactivity have attracted a great interest in pollutant removal, but are still challenged by the sluggish kinetics and metal release. This study proposes a feasible method to in situ synthesize reactive Fe(III)-Mn(III) hydr(oxy)oxides by simply modulating diffusion and redox reactions of Fe(II) and Mn(VII) in the confined PVDF membrane pores under ambient conditions. Without requiring any oxidant addition, the obtained multifunctional Fe-Mn/PVDF composite membrane showed rapid and efficient oxidation of various micropollutants. Influence of typical factors were examined, and the efficiency in authentic water matrices was also assessed. Reaction mechanism was further revealed, underlining the key role of spatial confinement in controlling the reactivity of Fe Mn hydr(oxy)oxides in pores of PVDF membrane. Furthermore, both Fe and Mn in the hydr(oxy)oxides help generate and stabilize Mn(III) species, which accounted for the high oxidization efficiency of contaminants. This study not only puts an insight into the attractive reactivity of Fe Mn hydr(oxy)oxides in confinement environment, but also provides a promising method to fabricate and manipulate multifunctional composite membrane for water purification under mild conditions. Peroxymonosulfate activation on a chainmail catalyst via an electron shuttle mechanism for efficient organic pollutant removal

Pijun Duan,Xing Xu,Kangying Guo,Qinyan Yue,Baoyu Gao

We present a chainmail catalyst (N-doped carbon nanotube-confined FeMn nanoparticles , FeMn@NCNT) for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to eliminate organic micropollutants (OMPs). Complete removal of 50 μM 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was achieved in 7 min. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance suggested that an electron transfer process (ETP) dominated the degradation of pollutants, while •OH and •SO 4 - were the secondary oxidants. In an upgraded galvanic oxidation system, the surge of current and the decrease of in-situ cathode potential after adding 4-CP indicated the electron shuttle rather than adjacent transfer mechanism dominated ETP. A novel spray-crosslinking method was introduced to deposit powder FeMn@NCNT on a commercial ceramic membrane. The coated membrane exhibited a negligible decrease of water flux, excellent mechanical stability and outstanding OMP elimination performance. This study provides new insights into ETP and advances the application of powder catalysts in combined filtration/oxidation water treatment processes.

Enhancement of Electron Transfer Between Fe/Mn Promotes Efficient Activation of Peroxomonosulfate by FeMn-NBC

Xiaoni Lin,Qiang Ge,Xianbo Zhou,Yan Wang,Congyun Zhu,Kuanyong Liu,Jinquan Wan

Bimetallic catalysts can effectively enhance the catalytic degradation efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which is usually attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer, but currently, there is no clear explanation of the mechanism of how the electron transfer is enhanced. A nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn composite biochar (FeMn-NBC) was co-constructed by hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature calcination. The FeMn-NBC activated PMS more efficiently than the monometallic one due to the enhanced electron transfer between Fe and Mn. The FeMn-NBC/PMS system activated PMS with Mn as the active center, and the high oxidation state of Mn4+promoted the acceleration of the PMS adsorption of the generation of Mn2+/Mn3+. This gaining effect accelerated the electron cycling between Fe2+/Fe3+and Mn2+/Mn3+/Mn4+, which enhanced the PMS catalysis to generate free radicals (•OH, SO4•−and •O2−) and non-radicals (1O2) for the efficient degradation of diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). Benefiting from this gaining effect, the degradation rate of DIBP by the FeMn-NBC/PMS system was increased by 2.43 and 3.38 times compared to Fe-NBC and Mn-NBC. The bimetallic-enhanced electron transfer mechanism proposed in this study facilitated the development of efficient catalysts for more efficient and selective removal of organic pollutants.

Valorization of PET Plastic as an Active and Stable Ozonation Catalyst via Carbonization and FeMn Loading

Lihua Yang,Qiqi Zhang,Cheng Wang,Anlin Xu,Yunhai Zhang,Yongjun Zhang

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste is an abundant carbon-rich feedstock, yet its conversion into ozonation catalysts remains insufficiently explored. In this study, PET waste was carbonized and loaded with Fe and Mn to prepare a carbon catalyst (FeMn-PET) for catalytic ozonation of recalcitrant contaminants in wastewater. At a catalyst dosage of 100 mg/L and a total Fe/Mn loading of 3.8 wt %, FeMn-PET increased the second-order kinetic constant for benzotriazole degradation to 781.9 M–1 s–1 at pH 2, 19-fold that of ozonation alone. The catalytic activity increased with total Fe/Mn loading and catalyst dosage, and FeMn-PET maintained high activity in the presence of 10 mM inorganic anions and performed well in real secondary effluent. Five-cycle reusability tests confirmed its good stability, with Fe and Mn leaching of only 30 μg/L and 1.2 μg/L, respectively. FeMn-PET promoted the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O2–), and singlet oxygen (1O2) with pH-dependent oxidation pathways. The estimated production cost of PET-derived activated carbon was 2.81 $/kg, suggesting waste PET as a cost-competitive catalyst precursor for FeMn-loaded carbon catalysts in ozonation-based wastewater treatment.

Bimetallic FeMn-N nanoparticles as nanocatalyst with dual enzyme-mimic activities for simultaneous colorimetric detection and degradation of hydroquinone

Bin Liu,Ziying Wang,Tao Wei,Zongming Liu,Jinkai Li

The transition element based N-doped carbon nanoparticles (NPs) with high catalytic activity and more active centers are regards as nanozymes with great potential for colorimetric detection and environmental degradation. Here, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous of manganese-amplified Fe-N-doped carbon (Fe/Mn-N-C) catalysts with more Fe/Mn-N 4 and C-N active groups was synthesized via pyrolysis of manganese(II) acetyllacetonate/ferrocene@ZIF-8 nanocomposites . Owing to its excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) and superoxide (SOD) mimicking properties, the Fe/Mn-N-C nanozymes were selected to rapid and accurate colorimetric detection of hydroquinone (HQ), and the detection limit was determined as 0.21 μM in range of 0–100 μM. In addition, the rapid degradation of HQ via hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide anion (O 2 •- ) generated between Fe/Mn-N-C nanozymes and H 2 O 2 , and the degradation efficiency reached to over 92% under the optimum reaction conditions (pH 4.0, 100 mM H 2 O 2 ). The reaction mechanisms were systematically explored. The manganese-amplified Fe-N-C single atom nanozyme with excellent enzyme-like activity and chemical stability will propose a feasible way for accurate detection and removal of pollutants in actual production.

A Carbon Nanofiber Electrochemical Sensor Made of FeMn@C for the Rapid Detection of Tert-Butyl Hydroquinone in Edible Oil

Yan Xiao,Yi Zhang,Zhigui He,Liwen Zhang,Tongfei Wang,Tingfan Tang,Jiaxing Chen,Hao Cheng

Overuse of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) as a food antioxidant has the potential to pollute the environment and threaten human health. Therefore, it is imperative to develop precise and rapid methods to detect TBHQ in food products. In this study, Fe- and Mn-doped Prussian blue analogs (FeMn-PBAs) were prepared by co-precipitation, FeMn-PBAs/PAN was prepared by electrostatic spinning, and a novel FeMn@C/CNFs composite was prepared by carbonization in nitrogen. Bimetallic FeMn doping has been shown to reduce vacancy defects and enhance the structural stability of PBA. Furthermore, electrostatic spinning has been demonstrated to reduce the agglomeration of PBA nanoparticles, which are electrode-modifying materials with high stability and good electrical conductivity. The morphological and structural characteristics of the FeMn@C/CNF composites were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical behavior of tert-butyl hydroquinone in FeMn@C/CNFs was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and chronocoulometry (CC). The results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and anti-interference capabilities. The prepared electrochemical sensor can be effectively utilized for the detection of TBHQ in food samples such as soybean and peanut oil samples, proving its strong potential for practical applications.

Mechanochemical synthesis of biochar encapsulated FeMn nanoparticles with strong metal–carbon interactions for efficient degradation of tetracycline via activating peroxymonosulfate

Yue Wang,Zhenglong Liu,Pan Huang,Baoliang Lei,Lele Qiao,Tielong Li,Kun-Yi Andrew Lin,Haitao Wang

Transition metal and carbon nanomaterials are well-known for their peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation capabilities. However, metal-based materials often suffer from ion leakage and poor reusability, while carbon-based materials have limited catalytic efficiency. To overcome these challenges and leverage the strengths of both, we introduce carbon-coated Fe/Mn composites (FeMn@BC), that establish strong interactions between metal components and the carbon substrate. FeMn@BC exhibited exceptional selectivity for 1 O 2 generation via PMS activation. In practical applications, FeMn@BC efficiently degraded tetracycline by activating PMS, achieving 99.1% removal in just 30 min. Importantly, FeMn@BC demonstrated remarkable stability, especially under visible light exposure. XPS analyses revealed strong interactions between FeMn components and the biochar shell, enhancing the electron transfer capacity of FeMn@BC through Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Mn(III)/Mn(II) redox pairs. In-situ attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis highlighted abundant hydroxyl groups in FeMn@BC as crucial active sites for electron transfer. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements unveiled that FeMn@BC catalyzed 1 O 2 generation primarily through the disproportionation of O 2 − and energy transfer from oxygen vacancy to O 2 . Our work demonstrates the possibility of simple ball milling of biomass in the presence of iron salts for iron-catalyzed mechanochemical synthesis of biochar-based catalysts. This study not only presents a novel strategy for large-scale biochar-encapsulated transition metal catalyst synthesis but also explores the potential use of agricultural waste for value-added applications.

Salt assistant bimetallic sludge-derived porous carbon for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation

Wenyu Zhao,Yiyuan Yao,Pengfei Wang,Xiaoyu Zhao,Lulu Fan,Chuquan Liu,Zhiwen Chen,Chengming Xiao,Junwen Qi,Yujun Zhou,Zhigao Zhu,Yue Yang,Jiansheng Li

The development of cost-effective, environmentally benign, and high-performance peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation towards wastewater treatment is still considered a challenge. In this work, the sludge-derived porous carbon loaded with bimetal oxides (DSC-FeMn) was fabricated by molten salt assistant strategy using the combination of zinc chloride, metal ions and Fe containing sludge. The obtained DSC-FeMn exhibited high catalytic activity for nearly 100 % 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) removal within 30 min with the k of 0.304 min −1 , which was 1.07 and 11.94 times that of the single Fe and Mn-sludge-derived carbon (DSC-Fe, DSC-Mn), respectively. Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance tests (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H 2 -temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and electrochemical experiments proved that the radical pathway, dominated by OH and SO 4 − , led to the excellent degradation performance of DSC-FeMn, which was attributed to the redox cycling between Fe and Mn. This study provides a new idea for sludge resource utilization, and it deepens the understanding of the mechanism of PMS activation by the synergistic interaction between bimetal.

Microscopic mechanisms of dissolved organic matter sequestration and transformation at the mineral-water interfaces during the formation and transformation of FeMn (hydr)oxides

Kai Cui,Libin Wu,Zihao Wu,Yue Yang,Shiwen Hu,Xiaoyuan Zhang,Zilong Zeng,Ping Chen,Li Wang,Zecong Ding,Hao Yi

Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) (hydr)oxides, as important reactive minerals in natural environments, play a critical role in organic carbon (OC) sequestration and turnover, significantly influencing the global carbon cycle. However, Fe and Mn (hydr)oxides usually coexist and undergo progressive phase transformations. There is still lacking a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic reactions of OC with Fe Mn (hydr)oxides during their formation and transformation. In this study, kinetic experiments combined with advanced analytical techniques were employed to investigate, at the nanoscale and molecular level, the microscopic mechanisms of dissolved organic matter (DOM) sequestration and transformation at the mineral-water interfaces during the evolution of Fe Mn (hydr)oxides. Fe Mn (hydr)oxides sequestered significant amounts of OC (57.7 mg C g −1 solid) through coprecipitation during their formation, resulting in a fractionation of DOM on the surface of Fe Mn (hydr)oxides. Compounds with high carboxyl and phenolic content were preferentially sequestered by the Fe Mn (hydr)oxides. The sequestered OC, at the nanoscale, was more associated with Fe (hydr)oxides than Mn (hydr)oxides. With the transformation of Fe Mn (hydr)oxides, Mn(III/IV) (hydr)oxides were formed and further mediated the molecular transformation of DOM, including oxidative degradation and oxidative polymerization. Fe (hydr)oxides primarily facilitated the stabilization of OC, while Mn (hydr)oxides contributed to both stabilization and destabilization of OC. This study, at the nanoscale and molecular level, elucidated the dynamic reactions of DOM with Fe Mn (hydr)oxides during their formation and transformation, contributing to a better understanding of OC sequestration and turnover across aquatic-terrestrial interfaces.

FeMn-layered double hydroxide-modified carbon cloth combined with ion exchange membrane enhanced the degradation of ionic organic pollutants in the capacitive desalination/peroxymonosulfate system

Jingke Song,Xiaoyu Wang,Kai Wang,Zhenlong Jiang,Xinyu Wang,Kai Jiang,Dapeng Wu

FeMn-layered double hydroxide (FeMn-LDH)-modified carbon cloth (CC) and ion exchange membranes were used to enhance adsorption of ionic organic pollutants (IOPs) by the hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) system. This system was then coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to efficiently degrade common IOPs, such as Acid Orange 7 (AO7). The FeMn-LDH-HCDI/PMS system achieves efficient removal of AO7 in saline wastewater by adding 1.0 mM PMS at a low voltage of 1.2 V, with a removal efficiency of approximately 94.9%. The system can effectively remove AO7 from saline water across a wide pH range (3-8) and is less affected by common coexisting anions. The presence of the cation exchange membrane enhances the system's electrosorption of AO7, while FeMn-LDH boosts PMS activation through the valence changes of metal elements. The degradation of AO7 is primarily due to the generation of • OH, SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 through PMS activation, while the toxicity of the intermediate products is reduced during the treatment process. Additionally, the system can achieve a removal efficiency of 83.1% for Cu(II)- ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) after 60 min of treatment, highlighting its potential for treating various IOPs.

A ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on CuZn quantum dots and FeMn quantum dots embedded imprinted polymer for ultrasensitive detection of bisphenol A with a smartphone analyzer

Le Wang,Jinwen Zhao,Siqing Zhang,Yanqin Zhu,Qinhong Yin

The hazards of bisphenol A (BPA) represent a significant public health concern, and developing accurate methods for its detection in water is of great importance for both human health and environmental protection. To address this, we have developed a dual-quantum dots fluorescent (FL) probe for highly efficient BPA recognition. This probe is fabricated by embedding iron‑manganese quantum dots (Fe Mn QDs) and copper‑zinc quantum dots (Cu Zn QDs) into a molecularly imprinted polymer matrix using a one-pot synthesis method. The constructed Fe Mn QDs/Cu-Zn QDs@MIPs sensor integrates dual FL emissions at 575 nm (Fe Mn QDs) and 525 nm (Cu Zn QDs) for specific recognition of BPA. Upon interaction with BPA, the sensor exhibits enhanced yellow fluorescence from Fe Mn QDs while the blue-green fluorescence of Cu Zn QDs is quenched. The fluorescence intensity ratio (F575 nm/F525 nm) demonstrates a single-exponential function relationship with BPA concentration. The employment of a dual-signal transduction mechanism enables the sensor to exhibit exceptional selectivity and ultrahigh sensitivity, with a wide linear detection range of 2.283–228.3 μg/L and a low detection limit (LOD) of 1.142 μg/L. To demonstrate its practical applicability, the sensor was employed for the quantitative detection of BPA in commercially bottled water, achieving satisfactory recoveries ranging from 96.0% to 104.4%. This work presents a practical and innovative approach for developing a ratiometric sensing system with dual fluorescence signals integrated with a smartphone-based visual detection platform for monitoring trace-level BPA.
