FeNi-LDH nanoflakes on Co-encapsulated CNT networks for stable and efficient ampere-level current density oxygen evolution

Xian Wang,Ze Qin,Jinjie Qian,Liyu Chen,Kui Shen

Developing low-cost but efficient electrocatalysts for continuous oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at ampere-level current densities can promote the hydrogen economy. LDHs are promising electrocatalysts to replace noble-metal-based catalysts for efficient OER, and rationally constructing LDH-based heterostructures can further boost their OER activities. Herein, we report the anchoring of FeNi-LDH nanoflakes onto MOF-derived carbon nanotube (CNT) networks on carbon cloth to obtain the self-supported LDH/CNT/CC. Benefiting from the advantages of its CNT network and the highly-active sites of its three-layer heterostructure, the optimized LDH/CNT/CC only requires a low overpotential of 200 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and exhibits robust stability under continuous electrolysis for 160 h at an ampere-level current density of 1 A cm −2 . Theoretical calculations show three-layer FeNi-LDH(001)/graphene(002)/Co(111) slab has the lowest OER energy barrier, and its graphene layer can gain electrons from the FeNi-LDH and Co to show the most suitable binding strength for intermediates to facilitate OER.

FeNi/Ni2P nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped porous carbon: efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Yu Tianrui,Zhang Yuhong,Zhou Jiaqi,Feng Mingxin,Zhang Zewu,Zhou Yuming

Efficient, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for advancing large-scale water electrolysis for hydrogen production. In this study, we present a novel electrocatalyst featuring FeNi/Ni 2 P nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC). The catalyst was prepared by pyrolyzing low-cost anion exchange resin (AER) loaded with non-precious metal salts, followed by phosphidation. The FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC catalyst benefits from the synergistic effects of the FeNi alloy, Ni 2 P phosphide, and N-doped porous carbon, which together enhance the number of active sites available for the OER. The large surface area of the material optimizes both electron transfer and mass diffusion pathways, leading to remarkable OER performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , FeNi/Ni 2 P@NC demonstrates an overpotential of 323 mV and a Tafel slope of 60.3 mV dec −1 , significantly outperforming the Tafel slope of 89.3 mV dec −1 observed for the precious metal RuO 2 . Furthermore, the carbon shell layer effectively mitigates nanoparticle corrosion, thereby improving the long-term stability of the catalyst. This study presents a novel approach for developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective carbon-based catalysts for water electrolysis. Graphical abstract

FeNi-based bimetallic MIL-101 directly applicable as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Qiang Wang,Congcong Wei,Dandan Li,Wenjun Guo,Dazhong Zhong,Qiang Zhao

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in the field of electrocatalysis in recent years. In most reports, an MOF is used as a sacrificial template to prepare a highly efficient electrocatalyst by calcination . Here, a series of FeNi bimetallic MIL-101 materials has been synthesized by a solvothermal method and directly applied for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). These MOFs contain a large number of catalytically active MO 6 octahedra and exposed hydrophilic carboxyl groups, which are believed to enhance OER activity. In addition, after the introduction of Ni, the catalytic activity is significantly improved by synergy between the metals. Among the studied compositions, Fe 2 Ni-MIL-101 showed the best OER performance, requiring a low overpotential of just 237 mV to drive a current density of 20 mA cm −2 in 1  m KOH solution, corresponding to a low Tafel slope of 44.2 mV dec −1 . Moreover, the electrochemical properties remained virtually unchanged during a 40-h long-term stability test. These findings enrich the application of MOFs materials in the field of electrocatalysis.

Fe site regulation and activity deciphering by selective phase transformation in the confined FeNi nanoparticles for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhouyang Ma,Jiawei Wu,Fuling Yang,Shuli Wang,Huan Wen,Ligang Feng

Given its initially low activity and difficulty in active phase formation, Fe site regulation is rarely touched in FeNi-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, the Fe sites regulation and activity deciphering are demonstrated by selective phase transformation taking nitrogen-doped carbon confined FeNi nanoparticles derived from Fe 2 Ni-MIL-MOF pyrolysis as an example; driven by the reduction atmosphere and Kirkendall effect assisted by melamine pyrolysis, some Fe and Ni sites were separated to form metallic Fe and FeNi alloy and the subsequent fluorination process induced the ionic compound FeF 2 formation rather than NiF 2 , offering a good platform to evaluate the influence of active Fe phase for OER catalysis. Theoretical calculations combined with ex-situ and in-situ spectral characterization techniques proved the complete convention of FeF 2 into a high-valent and reactive intermediate state of FeOOH. Considering the stable metallic state of Ni, the largely improved catalytic performance could be attributed to the Fe site regulation and the subsequent synergistic catalysis effect. Compared to the traditional iron-based catalyst, theoretically, the electronic structure of FeF 2 was more conducive to the active FeOOH phase formation and significantly lowered the reaction energy barrier for OER. By addressing the aforementioned problems, low overpotential and good stability for OER catalysts were realized. The current work showed valid proof of the FeNi-based catalysts regulation via Fe sites for energy-relevant catalysis reactions.

Modification of carbonized lignocellulose framework with FeNi-SnOx heterojunctions for enhanced electromagnetic interference shielding

Wenyao Feng,Changzhou Chen,Jiahao Zhao,Lu Li,Qinglei Xu,Wenqiang Qi,Jiawei Li,Hui Zhao,Guangfu Qian,Minsheng Lu,Douyong Min

Natural wood, a porous lignocellulosic resource, is an ideal precursor for carbon frameworks owing to its renewability. However, achieving a high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness poses a tremendous challenge for lignocellulose-based carbon framework. Herein, we developed a new material (FeNi-SnOx/CW) by embedding FeNi alloy and SnOx nanoparticles in carbonized lignocellulose framework (CW) from delignified wood using interface engineering modification. The CW acted as a conductive scaffold, while FeNi-SnOx enhanced polarization and magnetoelectric properties. Due to the synergistic effect of multiple mechanisms, the FeNi-SnOx/CW achieved excellent conductivity (437.3 S/m) and high saturation magnetization (13.33 emu/g). It also demonstrated a high EMI SE of 91.2 dB and a high ratio of SE A /SE T up to 85 % across the X-band at 2 mm thickness. Significantly, the interface engineering modification has resulted in a 59.2 dB enhancement in the EMI SE properties of the composite material compared to the pure CW (32.0 dB). Surface hydrophobicity modification with PDMS of the FeNi-SnOx/CW composite had a negligible impact on its EMI SE, thereby highlighting its practical potential. This research shows the benefits of FeNi-SnOx in boosting EMI shielding and offers a way to use renewable wood-based lignocellulose for high-performance EMI shielding materials.

In Situ Formation of FeNi Nanoparticles on Polypyrrole Hydrogel for Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Lixia Li,Paihao Yan,Qinkai Guo,Dongxu Zhang,Chunliang Mao,Quan Yuan,Hongtao Sun,Mingze Liu,Yanhong Liu,Baodong Mao

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NH3) under mild environmental conditions is attracting increasing attention, in which efficient and inexpensive transition metal catalysts, with the advantages of abundancy and low cost, play a key role. However, synergistic activity and selectivity promotion are still highly challenging. Herein, we developed a hydrogel-assisted strategy to prepare FeNi nanoparticles via the in situ adsorption and reduction of Fe/Ni precursors on a polypyrrole hydrogel. After optimization, the maximum NH3yield reached 0.166 mmol h−1cm−2, with a Faradaic efficiency of 88.9% and a selectivity of 86.6%. This excellent electrochemical performance was attributed to the mesoporous hydrophilic structure of the polypyrrole hydrogel, which facilitates the homogeneous loading of FeNi nanoparticles and provides a channel for both charge and mass transfer during nitrate reduction, which is important for the conversion of NO3−to NH3. Electrochemical active surface area determination and impedance spectroscopy showed that the introduction of hydrogel increased the active sites and improved the charge transfer. This study provides an effective strategy for improving the selectivity and yield of NH3in transition metal electrocatalysts by utilizing the three-dimensional hydrogel network and electrical conductivity.

Synthesis of FeNi@kaolin soft magnetic composites with adjustable magnetic properties under different DC bias fields

Chao Mei,Jingjing Li,Bowei Zhang,Xu Zhu,Feng Hu,Wei Liu,Hailin Su,Zhongqiu Zou,Youwei Du

Constructing the high-quality insulating layer and verifying the effects of DC bias field on magnetic properties is crucial in optimizing magnetic components based on soft magnetic composites. In this paper, a novel APTES-involved insulation technique has been developed to successfully coat kaolin on FeNi particles. Additionally, magnetic properties can be effectively regulated by changing the dosage of kaolin. The results show that anti-magnetization capacity and resistivity are improved by increasing kaolin content. Loss separation model and magnetic field simulation were used to investigate how the coating layer and DC bias field influence core loss for FeNi@kaolin SMCs. It can be found that structural demagnetizing field and eddy current were believed to be the main determinants of core loss variation in ideal sinusoidal waves, while the degree of magnetization state away from saturation plays a leading role in core loss under larger DC bias fields. Therefore, FeNi SMCs insulated with 1 wt% and 7 wt% kaolin exhibit the lowest core loss at DC bias field of 0 Oe and above 100 Oe, respectively. This work not only provides an effective insulating technique, but also supplies deeper insights into optimizing SMC-based magnetic components under larger DC bias fields.

Surface structure regulation and evaluation of FeNi-based nanoparticles for oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaocong Gu,Zong Liu,Meng Li,Jingqi Tian,Ligang Feng

FeNi-based catalyst is very promising for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in practical water electrolysis for hydrogen generation. Herein, we found the catalytic performance of FeNi nanoparticles, as proof of concept, for OER can be optimized via surface structure regulation by rational thermal oxidation and/or reduction approaches. Surface structure of FeNi pre-catalyst in a fully oxidized or metallic state is not active while proper synergism of these states is favorable as supported by some spectroscopic techniques and electrochemical measurements. The as-optimized FeNi catalyst requires only 230 mV overpotentials to offer 10 mA cm −2 , with faster catalytic kinetics, good stability and high active site efficiency. The efficient high valence state of Fe/Ni species synergism generated from the optimized FeNi pre-catalyst is revealed by the post and in-situ Raman spectrum analysis. The results could answer the varied performance of FeNi reported for OER and are also instructive for their performance optimization.

One-Step Synthesis of Heterostructural MoS2-(FeNi)9S8 on Ni–Fe Foam Synergistically Boosting for Efficient Fresh/Seawater Electrolysis

Shiwei Song,Yanhui Wang,Shuyu Zhou,Hongwei Gao,Xueqing Tian,Yungang Yuan,Wei Li,Jianbing Zang

Seawater is more favorable than freshwater in large-scale hydrogen production by electrolysis as it is considered to be the most plentiful natural resource. However, chloride ions with high concentrations in the electrolyte may easily cause corrosion to electrodes or undesirable side reactions during the implementation of seawater electrolysis, thereby degrading the overall system’s efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an electrocatalyst with excellent catalytic activity and corrosion resistance in order to achieve high-efficiency seawater electrolysis. In this study, a three-dimensional heterogeneous architecture of (FeNi)9S8 nanosheets uniformly decorated with an amorphous MoS2 layer on Ni-Fe foam (MoS2-(FeNi)9S8/NFF) was successfully prepared via one-step hydrothermal vulcanization. Benefiting from the strong interaction at the heterogeneous interface, effective charge transfer, and the enhanced corrosion resistance by MoS2-(FeNi)9S8 coupling, the self-supported MoS2-(FeNi)9S8/NFF electrocatalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability toward overall fresh/seawater splitting. Moreover, it required a low battery voltage of 1.57 and 1.62 V to reach 50 and 100 mA cm–2 in an alkaline natural seawater electrolyte, respectively, and possessed impressive durability up to 72 h, exceeding the pair of Pt/C||IrO2. Accordingly, this study provides a route for the preparation of corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts of hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis.

Novel FeNi-FeCo-C composite nanofibers: Highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution from water splitting

Hua Ma,Xiuwen Wu,Xiuli Fu,Zhijian Peng

The development of a facile strategy to fabricate inexpensive and efficient nonnoble metal-based alloys to replace their traditionally costly noble-metal counterparts for electrocatalytic water splitting holds great appeal. Here, we report novel FeNi-FeCo-C composite nanofibers (FeNi-FeCo-C CNFs), which was prepared simply by electrospinning a precursor solution containing Fe, Ni and Co nitrates together with polyacrylonitrile powders and subsequent thermal treatment. The optimal FeNi-FeCo-C CNFs prepared with 10 wt% polyacrylonitrile at a thermal treatment temperature of 800 °C show excellent electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution in a 1 mol·L −1 KOH aqueous solution with a relatively small overpotential of 262 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 47.2 mV dec −1 , and excellent cycling stability. The present strategy will provide new insight for the design and fabrication of electrocatalysts for water splitting.

In this work, FeNi layered double hydroxides/graphene oxide (FeNi LDH/GO) was prepared, which exhibits excellent selective cataluminescent performance towards propylene oxide. The selectivity and sensitivity of the cataluminescence (CTL) reaction were investigated in detail. Moreover, the catalytic reaction mechanism, including the intermediate products and the conversion of reactants to products, was discussed based on both the experimental and computational results. Furthermore, the proposed FeNi LDH/GO based CTL sensor was successfully applied for the determination of propylene oxide residue in fumigated raisins, which indicates extensive application potential for rapid food safety evaluation.

FeNi alloy electrode assisted PMS activation strategy for degradation of trimethoprim: Charge separation mechanism and theoretical calculation

Yuanchuan Ren,Yan Hu,Nanqi Ren,Fenghui Wu,Dandan Chen,Xuejun Zhu,Qiang Niu

FeNi binary metal alloy anchored foam carbon composite electrode was successfully constructed by electrodeposition self-assembly strategy (FeNi@CF). FeNi with heterogeneous structure serves as a charge transfer bridge, promoting charge separation. The degradation efficiency of TMP within 20 min was 98.15 % (k = 0.1935 min −1 ). The contribution of active components to TMP degradation follows the order of SO 4 − · (63.22 %)>·OH (39.55 %)>·O 2 – (9.33 %)> 1 O 2 (5.27 %), which is consistent with the proposed charge separation mechanism. DFT calculations show that the introduction of FeNi alloy can disrupt the sp2 hybrid structure of carbon in graphite electrodes, resulting in the formation of nucleophilic and electrophilic atomic centers on their surfaces, reducing the steric hindrance of PMS adsorption (E ads  = −3.28 eV), enhancing the adsorption strength of PMS, increasing the area of active centers, and improving the activation efficiency of PMS. The free radical quenching and intermediate identification experiments further confirmed the mechanism and pathway of TMP degradation. In addition, FeNi@CF has good repeatability and stability, making it suitable for treating pollutants in various water matrices. This work is expected to provide ideas for risk assessment of various toxic and persistent organic pollutants in drinking water and wastewater.
