A novel sandwich structure ACF/CC@FeOCl as bifunctional cathode for efficient mineralization of trimethoprim in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton process over a wide pH range

Yongjun Song,Aimin Wang,Songyu Ren,Yanyu Zhang,Zhenjun Wen,Zhongguo Zhang

BACKGROUND It would be highly advantageous to develop a heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) system in which the catalyst is fixed to recycle easily and the electrode itself can produce and activate H 2 O 2 simultaneously. In this study, a new sandwich-like bifunctional cathode using carbon cloth (CC) loaded with FeOCl nanoparticles and activated carbon fiber (ACF) was fabricated and used in the HEF process for the degradation of antibiotic trimethoprim (TMP). RESULTS Experimental results showed that the activated carbon fiber and FeOCl-modified carbon cloth cathode (ACF/CC@FeOCl) exhibited a promising catalytic performance to reduce O 2 to generate H 2 O 2 on the surface of ACF and activate H 2 O 2 to generate hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) at the active sites of FeOCl nanoparticles, thus enabling a rapid TMP degradation in a wide pH range (3–9). Various influencing factors, such as applied cathodic current, pH and TMP concentration, were investigated, and the optimal condition was found at 0.36 A, pH 3.0, and 100 mg L −1 TMP, where 99.7% TMP was degraded within 90 min and 74.4% total organic carbon (TOC) was removed within 360 min. Under the condition of 0.36 A and initial pH 6.8, 100 mg L −1 TMP was completely degraded within 120 min and the mineralization efficiency could achieve 61.5% within 360 min. The coumarin fluorescence probing technique and radical quenching experiments revealed that • OH was the predominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ACF/CC@FeOCl-HEF process. CONCLUSION The reusability and stability tests showed that the ACF/CC@FeOCl cathode has excellent performance and good stability, and this is very promising for the efficient degradation of refractory organic pollutants in the HEF process. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

The coordination bond reinforced FeOCl/C3N4 heterostructure for photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants

Jiang Meng,Jianyu Han,Zhi Wang,Chunlei Yang,Xiaoning Lu,Jigang Wang

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present a substantial environmental challenge due to their enduring nature and adverse effects on human health. The exploration of photocatalysts featuring abundant active sites and appropriate band structures represents a promising approach for harnessing solar energy in photo-self-Fenton reactions for pollutant oxidation. In this investigation, a two-dimensional S-scheme FeOCl/C 3 N 4 heterostructure was fabricated for the degradation of POPs. The coordination between dangling nitrogen atoms in C 3 N 4 and Fe 3+ in FeOCl established a novel pathway for the transfer of photogenerated electrons, thereby prolonging their lifespan by mitigating recombination events. Assessment of the photocatalytic performance using 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as a model pollutant revealed a 5.4-fold and 40-fold enhancement in degradation rate over FeOCl/C 3 N 4 compared to individual catalysts. Notably, nearly complete mineralization rates were achievable with FeOCl/C 3 N 4 , underscoring its robustness. Mechanistic investigations delineated hydroxyl radicals (•OH) as the primary active species responsible for pollutant degradation.

A new FeOCl/graphene quantum dot catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation to efficiently remove organic pollutants and inactivate Escherichia coli

Xin Sun,Hongai Zheng,Shuangyan Jiang,Meilin Zhu,Yao Zhou,Derui Wang,Yankun Fan,Lili Hu,Daquan Zhang,Lizhi Zhang

The sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are well-established and efficient techniques for the degradation of organic pollutants. Fe2+ is used as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate sulfate radicals (SO4−˙). In some past studies, the slow process of reducing Fe3+ to Fe2+ reduced the overall reaction rate of the SR-AOP system. To overcome this challenge, in this work, we for the first time fabricated a new composite activator, FeOCl decorated by graphene quantum dots (GQDs), by a facile method for activating PMS. The experimental results demonstrate that the as-prepared FeOCl/GQD catalysts can efficiently degrade organic pollutants and kill Escherichia coli through activating PMS to generate active species. Notably, the FeOCl/(16.7 wt%) GQD composite can activate PMS to degrade organics (97.8% of RhB within 30 min) and inactivate E. coli (99.1% within 10 min) with a pH range from 3 to 11. Moreover, mechanism analyses showed that the active species were SO4−˙, ˙OH, 1O2 and O2−˙ in the FeOCl/(16.7 wt%) GQDs + PMS system, and SO4−˙ and 1O2 were proved to be the main active species. The addition of GQDs promoted the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, thereby accelerating the degradation rate. Our study suggests that the promising strategy of exploiting highly efficient AOP platforms has many applications.

Enhanced Photo-Fenton Catalytic Performance toward Acid Orange II by FeOCl/CdS Quantum Dot Composites: Density Functional Theory Calculations and Mechanistic Insights

Dongao Xie,Changxin Tang,Dan Li,Jiren Yuan,Feigao Xu

FeOCl has attracted much attention for its good photo-Fenton properties. However, there are still some limitations to the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. Visible-light-responsive FeOCl/CdS quantum dot composites were prepared by calcination to overcome their flaws, and their catalytic activity was explored by the degradation of acid orange II (AO-II). The experimental results showed that the FeOCl/CdS composites exhibited better catalytic performance than pure components. The F1Cd0.5 composite (mass ratio of FeOCl to CdS is 1:0.5) achieved 98.5% removal efficiency of AO-II, which is 14.8 times higher than that of FeOCl+CdS under similar experimental conditions; moreover, the F1Cd0.5 composite still exhibits a high stability after five cycles. According to the characterization and experimental results with density functional theory calculations together, it is proposed that the type II carrier transfer-separation mechanism plays a leading role in enhancing the photodegradation performance of the photo-Fenton catalysts. This study provides a new idea to further improve the catalytic efficiency of the photo-Fenton technology for organic pollutant degradation.

Promoted wet peroxide oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds catalyzed by FeOCl supported on macro-microporous biomass-derived activated carbon

Cong Pan,Wenyu Wang,Chenchong Fu,Jong Chol Nam,Feng Wu,Zhixiong You,Jing Xu,Jinjun Li

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) are a recalcitrant class of air pollutants , and the strongly oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising to degrade them. In this study, a FeOCl-loaded biomass-derived activated carbon (BAC) has been used as an adsorbent for accumulating CVOCs and catalyst for activating H 2 O 2 to construct a wet scrubber for the removal of airborne CVOCs. In addition to well-developed micropores, the BAC has macropores mimicking those of biostructures, which allows CVOCs to diffuse easily to its adsorption sites and catalytic sites. Probe experiments have revealed HO • to be the dominant ROS in the FeOCl/BAC + H 2 O 2 system. The wet scrubber performs well at pH 3 and H 2 O 2 concentrations as low as a few mM. It is capable of removing over 90% of dichloroethane, trichloroethylene, dichloromethane and chlorobenzene from air. By applying pulsed dosing or continuous dosing to replenish H 2 O 2 to maintain its appropriate concentration, the system achieves good long-term efficiency. A dichloroethane degradation pathway is proposed based on the analysis of intermediates. This work may provide inspiration for the design of catalyst exploiting the inherent structure of biomass for catalytic wet oxidation of CVOCs or other contaminants.

Highly dispersed of Ag/AgCl nanoparticles on exfoliated FeOCl nanosheets as photo-Fenton catalysts for pollutants degradation via accelerating Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle

Lina Wang,Hanpei Yang,Li Kang,Mi Wu,Yuankun Yang

In this work, Ag/AgCl/FeOCl (Ag–Fe) catalysts were successfully prepared via multistep routes in which Ag was uniformly anchored to the enriched Cl sites provided by exfoliated FeOCl nanosheets. Among these Ag–Fe catalysts, 5% Ag–Fe exhibited the highest pseudo first-order kinetic constant 0.1056 min −1 for photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), which was 11 times higher than that of FeOCl (0.0096 min −1 ). Ag–Fe catalysts exposed more coordinatively unsaturated Fe active sites to coordinate with H 2 O 2 due to the cleavage of Fe–Cl bond. The exposed coordinatively unsaturated Fe(III) active sites could capture the photoinduced electrons and reduce them to Fe(II), which boosted the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons of Ag 0 transferred to the FeOCl, promoting the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). In addition, the intensified visible light adsorption (SPR effect) was achieved after introducing Ag/AgCl nanoparticles on exfoliated FeOCl. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and holes (h + ) were determined as the main reactive oxidative species (ROS) in the photo-Fenton degradation process.

Porous graphitized carbon-supported FeOCl as a bifunctional adsorbent-catalyst for the wet peroxide oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds: Effect of mesopores and mechanistic study

Cong Pan,Wenyu Wang,Yihui Zhang,Jong Chol Nam,Feng Wu,Zhixiong You,Jing Xu,Jinjun Li

Wet scrubbing coupled with adsorption-enhanced heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising approaches to the treatment of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). However, microporous activated carbon-based adsorbents and catalyst supports have the disadvantage of difficult molecule diffusion. Herein, we have demonstrated that porous graphitized carbon (PGC) allowed faster intra-particle diffusion of organic molecules due to its well-developed mesoporous structure. Therefore, a wet scrubbing system containing H 2 O 2 and a PGC-supported FeOCl catalyst has been developed to effectively remove gaseous dichloroethane, trichloroethylene, dichloromethane and chlorobenzene. The scrubber performed well at pH 3.0 using a FeOCl/PGC dosage of 0.2 g/L and initial H 2 O 2 concentration of 40 mM. Its good long-term performance was achieved by replenishing H 2 O 2 to maintain a suitable concentration. The degradation pathways of dichloroethane have been proposed using a combination of intermediate analysis and density functional theory calculations. PGC-supported catalysts may be desirable bifunctional adsorbent-catalyst materials for wet scrubbing of CVOCs.

FeOCl Nanodots and Doxorubicin Co-loaded Polymer Nanoparticles for Glutathione/pH-responsive Chemodynamic Therapy/Chemotherapy of Tumors

Lihui Yuwen,Yue Zhang,Huayu Xiao,Hang Xiao,Xiao Li,Wenjing Yang,Zhaoxia Yang,Heng Dong,Lianhui Wang

Graphical FeOCl nanodots were prepared by a ball-milling method and used as novel Fenton agents. Glutathione/pH dual-responsive polymer nanoparticles were synthesized by co-polymerization of acrylic acid and 3-methacrylamido dopamine with a cross-linker containing disulfide bonds, which can load FeOCl nanodots and doxorubicin to form a multifunctional nanoplatform for efficient chemodynamic therapy/chemotherapy. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on the Fenton reaction has been considered as a promising solution for the treatment of tumors. However, the limited therapeutic efficacy and lack of responsive release of Fenton agents still hinder the further application of CDT. To this end, we designed a disulfide bond (−S−S−) cross-linked polymer nanoparticles (poly(AA-co-DMA), PAD) to load FeOCl nanodots (FeOCl NDs) and doxorubicin (DOX) with the surface coating of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to prepare glutathione (GSH)/pH-responsive PAD-FeOCl/DOX@BSA nanoparticles (PFDB). In the tumor microenvironment (TME) with abundant GSH and acidic pH, the −S−S− bond in PFDB can be reduced and the linkage between the polymer chains is broken down, which facilitates the controlled release of FeOCl NDs and DOX. Both in vitro and in vivo experimental results showed that PFDB can serve as a GSH/pH-responsive nanoagent for the effective killing of 4T1 tumor cells by combined CDT/chemotherapy. This study provides a promising TME-responsive nanoagent with dual therapeutic modes for the effective treatment of tumors.

Construction of visible-light-response K, Na doped g-C3N4/FeOCl photocatalysis-self-Fenton system for pollutants degradation in water

Lina Wang,Hanpei Yang,Qiangshun Wu,Rui Ma

Photocatalysis-self-Fenton system, integrating photocatalysis with Fenton technology, emerge as promising approaches for environmental remediation. In this study, we introduced K, Na doped g-C 3 N 4 /FeOCl (DCN/FeOCl) catalyst, where amino groups on the DCN surface interacted with unsaturated Fe on FeOCl, forming Fe–N bonds and a Z-scheme heterojunction . The resulting DCN/FeOCl demonstrated efficient H 2 O 2 production and rapid tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light. The Z-scheme heterojunction and nitrogen vacancy enhanced electron-hole pair separation and O 2 adsorption. Additionally, we proposed a mechanism for dual-channel photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. This work presents a novel strategy for in-situ H 2 O 2 production and activation, facilitating water decontamination .

Highly efficient photocatalysis-Fenton degradation of antibiotics and phenol over sulfidated FeOCl under natural sunlight illumination

Jiayang Huang,Yunchang Xie,Chunhui Dai,Hao Cui,Chao Zeng

Sulfidated FeOCl is prepared as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst. And the surface sulfidation of FeOCl can remarkably accelerate the photoinduced charge separation and transfer, while also increase Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ atomic ratio, leading to the boosted photo-Fenton activity in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Under irradiation of natural sunlight (light intensity: ∼80 mW·cm −2 ), over 10 mg sulfidated FeOCl catalyst with using 20 μL 15 % H 2 O 2 , 91.2 % of ofloxacin solution (50 mg·L −1 ) and 97.5 % of sulfisoxazole solution (60 mg·L −1 ) can be degraded in 80 min, and 99.6 % of phenol solution (625 mg·L −1 ) is decomposed in 4 h. Under irradiation of a white Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lamp (light intensity: 5 mW·cm −2 ), 99.8 % of ofloxacin solution is decomposed after treatment for 4 h. Moreover, this photo-Fenton degradation system displays a stable activity in a wide range of pH (1−10), diverse water bodies, and various coexisting ions with concertation from 1 mM to 500 mM. Moreover, sulfidated FeOCl catalyst coated on a frosted glass sheet exhibits excellent stability for degrading ofloxacin even in seven continuous cycles. Particularly, the non-toxicity of the treated ofloxacin, sulfisoxazole, and phenol solution, have been proven by testing their toxic effects on cabbage seed, bacteria, and human embryonic kidney cell, respectively.

Boosting peroxymonosulfate activation by FeOCl/CuS composite for ciprofloxacin removal

Jie Zhao,Hongyang Wang,Zhisheng Jia,Ruopu Bai,Chaofan Song,Huixuan Zhang

The addition of CuS could enhance the catalytic activity of FeOCl. • The FeOCl/CuS/PMS can completely degrade ciprofloxacin within 4 min. • The FeOCl/CuS/PMS could work efficiently at pH 3–9. • FeOCl/CuS/PMS system contained reactive species (·OH, SO 4 ·- and O 2 ·- ). FeOCl serves as an effective iron-based catalyst in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for antibiotic removal. However, its catalytic efficiency is hindered by the sluggish redox cycling between Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ . To overcome this limitation, a composite catalyst of FeOCl/CuS was synthesized to enhance catalytic activity. At an optimal mass ratio of FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O to CuS of 1:2, the FeOCl/CuS system achieved complete degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 4 min. Notably, the catalyst exhibited high degradation efficiency across a broad pH range, demonstrating strong environmental adaptability. Although common co-existing anions and humic acid exerted inhibitory effects on CIP degradation to varying extents, the system remained robust under complex water matrices. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 ·- ), and superoxide anions (O 2 ·- ) were the dominant reactive species responsible for pollutant degradation. The incorporation of CuS significantly accelerated the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle, thereby improving PMS activation efficiency. Reaction pathway analysis revealed that CIP was degraded via two primary routes, generating 16 intermediate products, the majority of which showed reduced ecotoxicity compared to the parent compound. Furthermore, the FeOCl/CuS catalyst maintained excellent stability and reusability, retaining over 93% CIP degradation efficiency after four consecutive cycles. These results collectively highlight the promising potential of the FeOCl/CuS/PMS system for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Mechanism of heterogeneous activation of persulfate with FeOCl under visible light irradiation

Mengdie Chen,Haiming Xu,Xiaofang Zhang,Dongya Li,Dongsheng Xia

Activation of persulfate (PS) by ultraviolet light or transition metal catalysts has been extensively studied. However, little is known about the activation of PS by iron oxychloride (FeOCl) in the presence of visible light irradiation. Herein, the catalytic activity of FeOCl was developed for oxidative degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) with the FeOCl/PS/Vis process. The characterization of FeOCl for reaction kinetics, degradation mechanism, and catalyst stability was investigated. It is found that the redox cycle of iron species and photoinduced electrons formed on the FeOCl catalyst surface can effectively activate PS, to generate radicals. Based on quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance, the photogenerated holes (h+) and sulfate radicals (SO4−•) are the predominant reactive oxidants for RhB decolorization, while superoxide radicals (•O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are also involved. Moreover, FeOCl shows good catalytic performance in a wide range of pH values (pH = 3–10) and excellent reusability and stability, as well.
