Flower-like FeWO4/CeO2 heterojunction for enhanced humidity sensors working at room temperature: Mechanism study and potential application for non-contact healthcare monitoring
Flower-like FeWO 4 /CeO 2 heterojunction was fabricated for humidity sensor. • The response of the sensor was 327 at room temperature. • The sensors show excellent reproducibility, stability and wide humidity detection limits. • The sensors can monitor human respiratory status and detect non-contact finger proximity. As non-contact sensing, breath detection, and environmental humidity monitoring technologies advance, the demand for high-performance humidity sensors is becoming increasingly apparent. FeWO 4 is a reliable humidity-sensing material owing to its unique crystal structure and outstanding electrochemical properties. However, achieving fast responsiveness and high sensitivity to dynamic changes in humidity is still challenging. Herein, a series of flower-like FeWO 4 /CeO 2 heterojunction composites with various ratios were synthesized via a solvothermal method. The crystal phase, micromorphology, defect states and specific surface areas of the composites were systematically characterized by XRD Rietveld refinement, XPS, EPR, SEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman and BET analysis. When employed as resistive humidity sensing materials, the optimized FC-10 sample with a nominal CeO 2 loading of 10 wt% exhibits a response value (R 11% /R 95% ) of 327 at 95% RH, which is approximately 20 times that of pure FeWO 4 (16.19), and a fast response time of 9 s. Compared with most previously reported flower-like oxide humidity sensors, the FC-10 sensor achieves a synchronous enhancement in response magnitude and response speed. The sensor can resolve a steady-state humidity change of 1% RH in the medium humidity range of 45%–55% RH, and also features good repeatability and long-term stability. The DFT calculations reveal that the FeWO 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure possesses stronger thermodynamic binding affinity to water molecules than the two pure phases, and the interfacial charge redistribution promotes carrier separation, which accounts for the enhanced sensing response. Furthermore, the sensor shows application potential in respiratory humidity signal detection and non-contact proximity sensing based on water vapor perception.
