Mechanism of highly efficient electrochemical degradation of antibiotic sulfadiazine using a layer-by-layer GNPs/PbO2 electrode

Yan Yan,Xiangjuan Ma,Yijing Xia,Huajun Feng,Shengjue Liu,Cong He,Yangcheng Ding

A PbO 2 electrode integrating electrocatalytic and adsorptive functions was successfully fabricated by embedding layer-by-layer graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) into β-PbO 2 active layer (GNPs/PbO 2 ) and employed as anode for high-efficient removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). In electrochemical degradation experiments, SDZ was quickly enriched on the surface of GNPs/PbO 2 film via adsorption and then oxidized by ⋅OH in-site. In terms of the electrocatalytic performance and adsorption of electrode, the optimal electrodeposition time for each β-PbO 2 outer layer was 4 min (GNPs/PbO 2 -4). Compared with conventional PbO 2 electrode, the layer-by-layer GNPs resulted in the smaller crystal size and denser surface of PbO 2 electrode, thus facilitating the generation of active oxygen species. At the same time, the specific surface area, oxygen evolution potential (OEP) of the anode were enhanced and the charge-transfer resistance was reduced. For GNPs/PbO 2 -4 anode, the optimal conditions of electrochemical oxidation of SDZ were identified as initial pH 9, 50 mg/L of SDZ and 20 mA/cm 2 of current density using response surface methodology (RSM), 98.15% of SDZ could be removed in this case. The contribution of radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation to SDZ removal was about 79% and 21%, respectively. Moreover, the reaction pathways of SDZ on the GNPs/PbO 2 -4 electrode involving hydroxylation, radical reaction and ring cleavage were speculated. Finally, the continuous SDZ degradation and accelerated service lifetime test suggested that the GNPs/PbO 2 -4 electrode was shown to be stable and repeatable, and the Pb 2+ concentration was measured to ensure the safety of the treated solution. Consequently, the above findings provide an innovative way to design and prepare an effective and stable PbO 2 electrode for electrochemical degradation of antibiotic wastewater.

N-doped 2D graphite-2H nanoplatelets (GNPs) with enhanced PMS activation performance: Structure-dependent performance and Catalytic Mechanism

Fan Nie,Wenyue Xu,Di Zhang,Baizhi Jiang,Qi Sun,Junwei Wang

The N-doped two-dimensional (2D) carbon-based catalysts play a crucial role in the PMS catalytic activity of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, their activation mechanism still lacks a reasonable explanation. A low-cost and one-step synthesis of N-doped graphite-2H nanoplatelets (N-GNPs) were prepared through the calcination under 600°C. N-GNPs 0.5 -600 was applied to activate permonosulfate (PMS) 19.4 times faster than that of pure PMS system under visible light to degrade bis(monochloro-s-triazine) reactive dye. We first demonstrate that electron arrangement in N-GNPs samples can effectively activate PMS and generate 1 O 2 as much as S O 4 · − and  HO · as the main reactive species. The EPR test results were consistent with the quenching test. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed the graphite N adjacent C atoms (Eb= -8.9 eV) were promoted to produce more active sites. Bidirectional regulation of graphite N bonded C atoms form a local electron state, making the C most active electron donation. The 2P Z orbital of carbon atoms becomes occupied with the free electrons. The localized orbitals lead to the stronger Columbic repulsion of π electrons and enlarged interlayer distance, making it easier for the electrons to give out and accelerate the free-radical process.

A novel synergistic approach to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of CF/PEEK-Ti laminates through GNPs

Meng Cao,Yewei Zhang,Mingyu Liu,Xuefeng Sun,Shuo Wang,Jian Zang

The insufficient bond strength at the fiber/metal interface of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is a primary obstacle to their widespread application. To address this issue, a strategy is proposed to introduce graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) to enhance the bond strength at the carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK)-titanium interface. This approach comprises two main components. First, GNPs were deposited onto the surface of the titanium layer to form a micro-nanolayer using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effects of varying voltages, deposition times, and GNPs concentrations on the EPD results were investigated. Second, the PEEK matrix was modified with GNPs to further enhance the interfacial bond strength of CF/PEEK-titanium. The results indicated that optimal EPD parameters-30 V, 90 s, and a GNP concentration of 0.75 mg/mL-yielded the best outcomes. Under these conditions, the flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength of FMLs improved by 201.9 %, 133.9 %, and 91.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. When combining GNPs-modified PEEK with EPD, these properties increased further, with flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength enhanced by 281.7 %, 238.7 %, and 112.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to further investigate the role and mechanism of GNPs in the GNPs/PEEK/titanium ternary system. The simulations revealed that combining a GNPs-modified matrix with EPD significantly enhances the system's interfacial energy. Moreover, GNPs substantially influence the torsional behaviour of the PEEK main chain. These combined experimental and simulation results offer new insights into applying GNPs in composite materials.

Ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductive epoxy composites by cellulose-supported GnPs@PDA skeleton under stress-induced orientation strategy

Jiangang Zhou,Congzhen Xie,Rui Wang,Huasong Xu,Bin Gou,Hao Yang,Licheng Li

Designing anisotropic thermally conductive networks in thermal management materials can effectively exploit the high in-plane thermal conductivity of two-dimensional fillers to achieve high heat transfer efficiency along the predetermined direction, which is the hotspot for thermal management materials. However, constructing such an interconnected network with an orderly alignment structure through thermally conductive fillers has proved challenging. In this study, a high-density cellulose-supported GnPs@PDA skeleton with an interconnected and ordered structure was successfully prepared through the stress-induced strategy. After embedding into the epoxy resin , the EP/CGP composites with 22.1 vol% filler content exhibit an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 8.39 W/mK under a 75 % compression ratio, which is 12.3 times higher than that without compression. The enhancement of thermal conductivity for EP/CGP composites under the stress-induced orientation strategy is illustrated by the finite element analysis and metal foam theory. Furthermore, the transient heat transmission processes of the composites are recorded to verify their prospect in thermal management applications. This novel approach sheds light on the fabrication of thermally conductive networks with interconnected and ordered structures for next-generation thermal management materials.

Enhanced thermally conductive and thermomechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) nanocomposites for radiator of electronic components

Yang Pan,Bin Yang,Ning Jia,Yangnan Yu,Xiang Xu,Yingying Wang,Bin Wu,Jiasheng Qian,Ru Xia,Chenjun Wang,Aiqing Sun,You Shi

In this work, multi-layer hot pressing (MLHP) method was used to prepare the graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) filled polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites. Effect of GNP content on the viscoelastic behavior and thermomechanical properties of composites was studied via rheometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared thermal imaging (ITI) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), etc. According to dynamical rheological testing, thermorheological complexity was clearly displayed at elevated GNP content, based upon flow activation energy ( E a ) and time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. The infrared thermal imaging (ITI) indicated that a filler conductive network was gradually formed with increasing filler content. The average heating rate of the samples increased from 0.74 to 0.92 °C/s. The Agari model was found to fairly interpret the variation of thermal conductivity as a function of GNP loading, which agreed well with SEM observation and indicative of the formation of a GNP network structure. Dynamic thermomechanical properties of the composites were heavily influenced by the temperature distributions within the samples. The addition of GNP increased the glass transition temperature of PMMA from 116.7 to 125.9 °C, which favored enhanced thermophysical properties of PMMA. The prepared composites in this work showed wonderful mechanical properties even at relatively high temperatures (e.g., having storage modulus of 1.3–1.9 GPa and yielding strength more than 58.0 MPa at 50 °C). The current work is practically significant for further expanding the application range of PMMA/GNP nanocomposites.

Melt crystallization and thermal properties of graphene platelets (GNPs) modified recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) composites: The filler network analysis

Bin Yang,Jin Chen,Li-Fen Su,Ji-Bin Miao,Peng Chen,Jia-Sheng Qian,Ru Xia,You Shi

Solution blending was used in this work to prepare graphene platelets (GNPs) modified recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) composites in an attempt to disclose the presence of a filler network structure in the composites. The incorporation of GNP decreased the activation energy and produced nucleating effect on the crystallization of PET without altering the crystal form. The existence of GNP was found to cause an obvious enhancement in complex viscosity and storage modulus of composites via dynamic rheological testing as well as dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The Agari model presented the most reasonable prediction of the thermal conductivity as a function of GNP loading among the thermal conduction models. A four-parameter model (FPM) of melt solidification kinetics coupled with an in - situ temperature measurement agreed fairly with the variation of thermal conductivity versus GNP content, suggesting the formation of a GNP network structure which was also documented by SEM observations on the microstructures of the composites.

Label-Free, Single-Particle, Colorimetric Detection of Permanganate by GNPs@Ag Core–Shell Nanoparticles with Dark-Field Optical Microscopy

Zhongju Ye,Rui Weng,Yanhong Ma,Fuyan Wang,Hua Liu,Lin Wei,Lehui Xiao

Rapid quantification of permanganate (MnO4–) in aqueous solution with a convenient and sensitive single-particle-detection (SPD) method is demonstrated by dark-field optical microscopy. The design is based on the selective etching of the Ag shell of a glucose-protected GNPs@Ag nanoparticle by MnO4–. In the presence of MnO4–, a noticeable red-shift of localized surface-plasmon resonance (LSPR, from blue to green) together with a tremendous decrease in the extinction coefficient from individual GNPs@Ag nanoparticles is observed. MnO4– can then be quantified by calculating the ratio between the number of green and blue particles on the cover glass surface after the etching process. A linear dynamic range of 0–6 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 46 nM were readily achieved, which are much lower than those of spectroscopic measurements in bulk solution. In tap water, a comparable LOD (50 nM) and satisfactory recovery efficiency are demonstrated. As a consequence of these merits, the method demonstrated herein will find promising applications for the ultrasensitive detection of MnO4– under complex milieu in the future.

UHPLC-MS/MS and GNPS Elucidate Gallic Acid Transformation and Accumulation Mechanism in Phyllanthus emblica L. during Hot Air Drying

Yehua Yang,Jiaqi Li,Xuejin Li,Qichang Huang,Weiwei Jiang,Wei Zhang,Yuqian Jiang,Yao Tang

Phyllanthus emblica L. is a fruit with high medicinal and edible value. Its main bioactive component, gallic acid (GA), is significantly increased by hot air drying, yet the underlying chemical mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the temperature-dependent transformation of phenolics during drying (80–130 °C) using UHPLC-MS/MS and Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS). High-temperature drying (110 to 130 °C) increases the GA content by 13.4–26.9 fold. Integrated metabolomic analysis suggests this accumulation results primarily from two nonenzymatic pathways: the thermal hydrolysis of glucose galloyl derivatives (e.g., glucogallin, digalloylglucose, and trigalloylglucose), and the degradation of glucuronic acid galloyl derivatives (e.g., 2-O-galloylgalactaric acid and monogalloylgalactonolactone). While temperatures >110 °C maximize gallic acid yield, the Maillard reaction products (e.g., 5-HMF) were also promoted. These findings elucidate the chemical mechanism of GA accumulation via ester bond cleavage, providing a scientific basis for optimizing drying protocols to balance medicinal quality and safety.

The influence of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the semi-blunt puncture behavior of woven fabrics impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF)

Fei-Fei Wang,Yan Zhang,Hao Zhang,Lan Xu,Ping Wang,Chong-bin Guo

Fabrics are widely applied in various fields, such as body armor, aerospace industry and military equipment. This paper reports the semi-blunt puncture behavior of fabrics impregnated with a shear thickening fluid (STF), which is a dispersion system of nano silica/polyethylene glycol (SiO2/PEG). The rheological properties and microstructure of the STF were tested to evaluate the influence of SiO2 particle size and additives (graphene nanoplatelets) on the puncture behavior of the final fabrics. The surface characteristics of neat and STF-treated fabrics were separately measured by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), which helps study the damage morphology and mechanism of the fabric. The surface characteristics of the silica nanoparticles and additives were also measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results demonstrated that the puncture behavior of the woven fabric was significantly enhanced due to the presence of STF. Moreover, the presence of additive GNPs induced a relatively lower shear thickening phenomenon, while a significant enhancement in the semi-blunt puncture behavior of the woven fabric was observed.

Construction of a GNPS-based activity molecular network coupled with 1H NMR HetCA: A strategy for rapid antioxidant identification from Aganosma cymosa

Mengjiao Wang,Haoyu Li,Lu Bai,Quan Guo,Jiayuan Wu,Chi-Tang Ho,Naisheng Bai,Sen Guo

The rapid and targeted identification of bioactive constituents from complex natural product matrices remains a significant challenge in natural product research. This study employs an integrated biochemometrics workflow combining 1 H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( 1 H NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) to efficiently pinpoint antioxidant components from Aganosma cymosa . Systematic separation of the crude extract yielded 37 microfractions (MFs), which were subjected to both antioxidant activity evaluation and UHPLC-MS/MS profiling. An active molecular network was constructed by calculating Spearman rank correlation coefficients between MS feature abundances and the corresponding antioxidant activity data, enabling visualization of activity-correlated features within the GNPS platform. To address the limitation of MS-based annotation in distinguishing structural isomers, feature-based GNPS analysis was integrated with 1 H NMR heterospectral covariance analysis (HetCA). The HetCA pseudo-spectra provided orthogonal validation and precise spectroscopic targets for subsequent isolation. Through this combined strategy, the main antioxidant constituents were successfully predicted, isolated, and structurally verified by NMR data. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the synergistic integration of Spearman rank correlation-based active molecular networking, a multi-level prioritization strategy, and 1 H NMR HetCA orthogonal validation provides a powerful paradigm for the precise identification of bioactive components in complex plant matrices.

PSS modified by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane linking large-area GNPs/PSS to silicone rubber with stable interface combination for high sensitivity flexible resistive sensor

Han Feng,Ping Liu,Xu Guo,Junliang Li,Yifan Sun,Shunge Wu,Ruohai Hu,Zhi Liu,Helei Tian,Yuanming Ma,Caixia Liu,Houzhu Huang,Fei Teng,Xinyue Tang,Austin Yang,Aiguo Song,Xiaoming Yang,Ying Huang

Flexible resistive sensors based on crack structures have been widely studied in the field of electronic skin and health monitoring. However, it is still a challenge to develop resistive sensors with strong interface bonding forces due to the problem that the sensitive layer of traditional cracked sensors falls off easily. This paper reports a new type of graphene-based resistive sensor, which uses modified poly(sodium 4-phenylene sulfonate) and graphene nanosheets to prepare a highly conductive, fragile, film sensitive layer. Siloxane at the end of modified poly(sodium 4-phenylene sulfonate) is used to enhance the interface between the sensitive layer and the silicone rubber layer to prepare a flexible resistive sensor with a crack structure. The sensor has a high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 21980.28) and a high response speed (∼65 ms), with an effective working range of 0–4.7 % strain. The sensor has been successfully applied to human physiological signal detection. The neural network algorithm successfully predicted the corresponding blood pressure based on the pulse wave signal detected by the sensor. The average error of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure was 0.79 and 0.42 mmHg, and the error of ± 5 mmHg accounted for 91.2 % and 94.3 % of the total, respectively. The error value passed the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation standard, and reached the Class A standard of British Hypertension Society.

A novel cockscomb-like substrate-supported TFN-FO membrane with a dispersed bovine serum albumin (BSA)/gold nanoparticles (GNPs) interface layer exhibiting high performance

Fuqing Ma,Chaojie Cai,Xinzhen Zhao,Hilal Ahmad,Changkun Liu

A novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) forward osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated by loading bovine serum albumin (BSA)/gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on the surface of a cockscomb-like nylon supporting membrane. The influence of the embedded BSA/GNPs on surface morphology , surface roughness , surface charge, separation, and FO performance of the TFN-FO membrane was investigated. The water flux of the BSA/GNPs-modified FO membrane could be increased to 55.2 ± 5.4 LMH, and the J s /J w value was substantially decreased to 0.034 g/L, indicating a high selectivity of the modified membrane. BSA/GNPs located between the top of the nylon supporting membrane and the bottom of the polyamide (PA) skin layer provided passage for water transport and increased the roughness of the PA layer, thus enhancing the effective area on which the osmotic pressure could act. In addition, BSA/GNPs located at the bottom surface of the nylon supporting membrane provided a nearly electroneutral surface in the solution and alleviated dilutive concentration polarization . In summary, choosing a nylon membrane with a special cockscomb-like surface structure as the supporting layer to load BSA/GNPs nanoparticles proved to be a creative and effective nano-modification method for fabricating high-performance TFN-FO membranes.
