A facile bionic strategy towards Gd (III)-imprinted membranes via interlaced stacking of one-dimensional/two-dimensional nanocomposite materials

Keyu Cui,Baihui Gao,Meng Tai,Bin Su

Rapid development of rare earth industry has led to an increasing demand for highly purified rare earth elements (REEs). The combination of ion-imprinted technique (IIT) and membrane separation technique (MST) is recently regarded as a promising strategy for selectively separating specific ions from multiple REEs. In this work, a facile bionic strategy for preparation of Gd (III)-imprinted membranes (GIMs) were developed via interlaced stacking of one-dimensional Gd (III)-imprinted carbon nanotubes (GICNTs) and two-dimensional polydopamine-modified graphene oxide (pDA@GO). Polydopamine was synthesized on graphene oxide to large enhance the interfacial adhesion, and ion-imprinting polymerization is implemented on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by direct cross-link of linear polymers. The obtained materials are characterized in detail by FTIR, SEM, TEM and AFM to explorer the evolution of chemical composition and morphology. Selectivity towards Gd (III) is obtained by isothermal adsorption, kinetic adsorption and time-depended permeation. Isothermal and kinetic models are fitted with adsorption data to obtain the mechanism of selective separation on GIMs. The as-synthesized GIMs with high permeation selectivity (2.91 and 2.49) towards Gd (III) and stable permeation regeneration would potentially be applied to separation and purification of specific ions form multiple REEs.

Electrochemical Coreduction of Gd(III) with Pb(II) and Recovery of Gd from LiCl-KCl Eutectic Assisted by Pb Metal

Wei Han,Wenjuan Wang,Mei Li,Yangyang Meng,Wenjing Ji,Yang Sun

To recover Gd from LiCl-KCl eutectic, the coreduction mechanism of Gd(III) with Pb(II) was investigated using electrochemical methods. The formation potentials related to the formation of three Gd-Pb intermetallics were detected by cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and chronopotentiometry, and the formation mechanism of Gd-Pb compounds could be described as xPb(II) + 2xe− = xPb. Meanwhile, the electroreduction of Gd on liquid Pb electrode was explored. The diffusion coefficient of Gd metal in liquid metallic Pb was determined by anodic chronopotentiometry. The kinetic parameters of Gd(III)/Gd(in Pb) couple in the temperature range from 723 K to 873 K were determined employing linear polarization (LP) method. Based on the relationship of exchange current density and temperature, the reaction activation energy was estimated to be 23.17 kJ mol−1. In addition, the recovery of Gd from molten salts was performed assisted by liquid Pb electrode by constant potential electrolysis (CPE) and constant current electrolysis (CCE). The products characterized using XRD, SEM with EDS are comprised of GdPb3 and Pb phases. The concentration change of Gd during CCE process was monitored by ICP-AES, and the recovery rate was estimated. The results showed that Gd concentration decreased and recovery rate increased with the duration.

Design of Wood-Based Gd (III)-Hemoporphyrin Monomethyl Ether Eco-Material for Optical Oxygen Sensing with a Wide Detection Range

Yujie Niu,Jinxin Wang,Zhongxing Zhang,Ting Liu

Gaseous oxygen detection is essential in numerous production and manufacturing sectors. To meet the varying oxygen detection requirements across different fields, techniques that offer a wide oxygen detection range should be developed. In this study, a wood-based oxygen sensing material was designed using balsa wood as the supporting matrix and gadolinium hemoporphyrin monomethyl ether (Gd-HMME) as the oxygen-sensitive indicator. The wood-based Gd-HMME exhibits a cellular porous structure, which not only facilitates the loading of a substantial number of indicator molecules but also enables the rapid interaction between indicators and oxygen molecules.OPis defined as the ratio of the phosphorescence intensity of the oxygen-sensing material in the anaerobic and aerobic environment. A linear relationship betweenOPand oxygen partial pressure ([O2]) was obtained within the whole range of [O2] (0–100 kPa). The wood-based Gd-HMME exhibited excellent resistance to photobleaching, along with a rapid response time (3.9 s) and recovery time (4.4 s). It was demonstrated that the measurement results obtained using wood-based Gd-HMME were not influenced by other gaseous components present in the air. An automatic oxygen detection system was developed using LabVIEW for practical use, and the limit of detection was determined to be 0.01 kPa.

Preparation of imprinted cryogels of cellulose cross-linked ionic liquids for selective separation of Gd(III) from rare earth leachate

Guomeng Li,Xudong Zheng,Xi Zhang,Youming Zhu,Lin Guo,Jinfeng Mei,Xiukun Ge,Zhongyu Li

The development of high technology has elevated industry’s dependence on rare earth resources. The hydrometallurgical process is widely used for the separation of rare earth elements (REEs) from rare earth ores, producing acidic leachate with trace amounts of REEs. Recovery of REEs from rare earth leachate not only mitigates the negative impact of leachate on the environment, but also contributes to the realization of sustainable resource utilization. In this study, two novel imprinted cryogel adsorbents, methyltrioctylammonium chloride-derivative carboxymethylated cellulose nanocrystal imprinted cryogel (LR-ICMC) and ethylmethylimidazolium bromide-derivative carboxymethylated cellulose nanocrystal imprinted cryogel (LM-ICMC), were constructed by using carboxymethylated modified cellulose nanocrystals as a backbone structure, and successfully branched ionic liquids (ILs) methyltrioctylammonium chloride-derivative and ethylmethylimidazolium bromide-derivative, respectively, for the separation of gadolinium ions (Gd(III)) from rare earth leachate. Firstly, SEM and TEM results showed that the incorporation of ILs retained part of the pore structure of carboxymethylated cellulose nanocrystals (CMCNCs). BET and TG results illustrated that the incorporation of ILs effectively increased the specific surface area and thermal stability of LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC. FT-IR and XPS results showed that LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC could adsorb Gd(III) by electrostatic and chelating effects. Secondly, adsorption isotherm experiments demonstrated the adsorption capacities of 66.880 mg/g and 75.895 mg/g for LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC, respectively; adsorption kinetic experiments demonstrated the ability of LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC to rapidly adsorb 85.152 % and 87.989 % of the maximum adsorption capacity, respectively, within the initial first 40 min. Finally, cycling experiments demonstrated the advantages of LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC in reuse, maintaining 89.245 % and 90.734 % of the original performance after five adsorption–desorption cycles, respectively. Based on these results, LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC were demonstrated to be highly efficient and reusable adsorbents for selective recovery of Gd(III) from rare earth leachate. This study deepens the application of ILs in solid-phase adsorbents and highlights the great potential of LR-ICMC and LM-ICMC in the field of REEs recovery.

Gd (III) complex conjugate of low-molecular-weight chitosan as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance/fluorescence dual-modal imaging

Yan Huang,Peter Osei Boamah,Jianbo Gong,Qi Zhang,Mingqing Hua,Yuzhen Ye

The fusion of molecular and anatomical modalities facilitates more reliable and accurate detection in clinic. In this work, we prepared gadolinium (III) complex Gd-DTPA-FITC-CS 11 with magnetic resonance (MR) and fluorescence dual-modal imaging modalities. Gd-DTPA-FITC-CS 11 consisted of fluorescein isothiocyanate and low-molecular-weight chitosan (CS 11 ) units conjugated with gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA). Gd-DTPA-FITC-CS 11 exhibited a higher longitudinal relaxivity (14.09   mM −1   s −1 ) than the clinical Gd-DTPA (3.85   mM −1   s −1 ). T 1 -weighted MR contrast enhancement was also demonstrated the comparability to Gd-DTPA at lower dosage. The binding with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated. The fluorescence of BSA in the presence of Gd-DTPA-FITC-CS 11 was weakened due to static quenching mechanism. The conformation of BSA was slightly changed but α -helix was dominant. The binding was entropy-driven and spontaneous and the main contribution was hydrophobic interaction. Our results suggested the potential of Gd-DTPA-FITC-CS 11 as an MR/fluorescence dual-modal imaging contrast agent in improving the diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy.

Highly effective and selective recovery of Gd(III) from wastewater by defective MOFs-based ion-imprinted polymer: Performance and mechanism

Ming yang,Yuxin Zhou,Dandan Zhang,Fang Zhou,Hui Ning,Maoxia He,Ru-an Chi,Weiyan Yin

Developing a high-performance adsorbent for the recovery of Gd(III) from wastewater is of great environmental and economic significance. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) functionalized with mixed-linker defect strategy hold huge potential for use as adsorbents for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater. However, the defective MOFs still show a relative low selectivity to target metal ions. Herein, we propose the combination of surface-imprinting and defect engineering strategies to synthesize Gd(III) ion-imprinted polymers (G-IIPs) based on mixed-linker Zr-MOFs, and apply them for capturing Gd(III) ions from wastewater. It is worth noting that 2-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid not only served as monodentate ligand to in-situ induce ligand vacancies and form hierarchical pores on UiO-66-NH 2 , but also as high-efficient functional monomer in imprinted layer to provide the strong coordination ability towards Gd(III). Benefiting from its abundant binding sites and hierarchical pore structure, the as-prepared G-IIP-3 with rich defects displays a high adsorption capacity of 181.75 mg·g −1 and a short equilibration time of 30 min for Gd(III). In addition, G-IIP-3 presents highly selective capture of Gd(III) over interfering ions. Furthermore, density functional theory calculation demonstrates that both phosphate group and Zr-O cluster play key roles in the Gd(III) adsorption process. Thus, this work provides an effective method to develop high-performance materials for Gd(III) recovery by organically combining the advantages of surface-imprinting and defect engineering strategies.

Preparation of imprinted bacterial cellulose aerogel with intelligent modulation of thermal response stimulation for selective adsorption of Gd(III) from wastewater

Li Guomeng,Zheng Xudong,Xu Tongtong,Zhang Xi,Ji Biao,Xu Zihuai,Bao Sifan,Mei Jinfeng,Li Zhongyu

Research on recycling of used rare earth elements has been of great interest. Adsorption is one of the advantageous methods to recover gadolinium with high value. In the process of adsorption and separation of gadolinium from materials, the selectivity of materials for gadolinium can be significantly improved by using ion imprinting technique. However, gadolinium elution process is a traditional pickling process, which may affect the construction of imprinting sites. In this study, bacterial cellulose with three-dimensional spatial structure was used as the base material of aerogel material, and functional materials containing a large number of carboxyl groups were introduced by chemical grafting method. In combination with ion imprinting technology and N-polyacrylamide as intelligent temperature control valve, intelligent imprinting aerogel (PNBC-IIPS) with specific selectivity to gadolinium was prepared. The properties of aerogel materials were analyzed by SEM, FT-IR, and BET characterization. The experimental analysis shows that the desorption of gadolinium can be achieved by controlling the temperature change. The adsorption experiments show that PNBC-IIPS can selectively adsorb gadolinium ions from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 95.51 mg g −1 . Compared with unimprinted aerogel, the maximum adsorption capacity of gadolinium ion is significantly increased, which proves that the introduced ion imprinting technique plays a key role in the adsorption process. Cyclic experiments show that the adsorption capacity of PNBC-IIPS can still maintain 88% of the original adsorption capacity after 5 times of adsorption and desorption. In conclusion, PNBC-IIPS is a green adsorbent for selective recovery of gadolinium ions.

Tumor-targetable magnetoluminescent silica nanoparticles for bimodal time-gated luminescence/magnetic resonance imaging of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo

Bo Song,Qi Liu,Hua Ma,Zhixin Tang,Chaolong Liu,Jinhua Zou,Mingqian Tan,Jingli Yuan

Bimodal photoluminescence-magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique has attracted tremendous attention due to its great potential in biomedical researches and clinical practices. Herein a novel multifunctional magnetoluminescent nanocomposite, FA-Gd-Tb@SiO 2 , was found to serve as an effective probe for bimodal time-gated luminescence/MR imaging of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo . The nanoprobe was designed by integrating a luminescent Tb 3+ complex, a Gd(III)-based contrast agent and a tumor-targeting molecule, folic acid (FA), into a silica nanoparticle . The integration of these functional moieties allows the nanoprobe to be employed for specific imaging of cancer cells with background-free TGL and non-invasive MR imaging modes. In addition, the optical and magnetic properties were dramatically improved after implicating the newly synthesized nanoarchitecture. In vitro cellular TGL imaging demonstrated that the FA-Gd-Tb@SiO 2 nanoprobe could recognize and accumulate in cancer cells overexpressing FA receptor. Furthermore, in vivo study revealed that the as-prepared nanoprobe was able to effectively enhance T 1 -weighted MR contrast and TGL intensity in tumor tissue, which might contribute to the precise detection and tracing of cancer cells, as well as diagnosis and therapy of tumor in clinical.

Co-Assembly of Gd(III)-Based Metallosurfactant and Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles in Organosilica Cross-Linked Block Copolymer Micelles for Highly Efficient MRI and Fluorescent Bimodal Imaging

Kehan Xu,Na Xu,Yanchao Zhu,Mengsi Zhang,Weijun Tang,Yun Ding,Aiguo Hu

Conformity of two biological imaging entities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence imaging, is achieved through co-assembly of a Gd(III)-based metallosurfactant, conjugated polymeric nanoparticles, and amphiphilic block copolymer F127 (PEO 106 PPO 70 PEO 106 ) followed by crosslinking with organosilica. The cross-linked micelles with a size around 100 nm exhibit outstanding dispersion stability in aqueous and phosphate buffered saline solutions, bright fluorescence emission, and high relaxivities, providing a new approach to synthesize highly efficient bimodal contrast agents. The relaxivities of the co-assembled micelles are synergistically enhanced by incorporation of Gd(III) complexes with high hydration number ( q = 3) and elongation of rotation correlation time to achieve r 1 values up to 105.37 m m −1 s −1 (at 1.5 T), which is over 20 times that of clinically used MRI contrast agents and among the highest values of all the nanoparticular MRI contrast agents. The external PEO layer endows these micelles with very low cytotoxicity for both in vitro and in vivo imaging. Meanwhile, thanks to the enhanced permeability and retention effect originating from their nanoscale sizes, the bimodal contrast agents show a prolonged blood circulation time in vivo and targeted accumulation at tumor regions to display outstanding MRI imaging performance.
