Ultrathin Graphdiyne/Graphene Heterostructure as a Robust Electrochemical Sensing Platform

Xiuchao Sun,Menglu Duan,Rongteng Li,Yuan Meng,Qiang Bai,Lina Wang,Manhong Liu,Zhugen Yang,Zhiling Zhu,Ning Sui

Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered as an appealing electrode material for electrochemical sensing because of its alkyne-rich structure and high degrees of π-conjugation, which shows great affinity to heavy metal ions and pollutant molecules via d−π and π–π interactions. However, the low surface area and poor conductivity of bulk GDY limit its electrochemical performance. Herein, a two-dimensional ultrathin GDY/graphene (GDY/G) nanostructure was synthesized and used as an electrode material for electrochemical sensing. Graphene plays the role of an epitaxy template for few-layered GDY growth and conductive layers. The formed few-layered GDY with a high surface area possesses abundant affinity sites toward heavy metal ions (Cd2+, Pb2+) and toxic molecules, for example, nitrobenzene and 4-nitrophenol, via d−π and π–π interactions, respectively. Moreover, hemin as a key part of the enzyme catalytic motif was immobilized on GDY/G via π–π interactions. The artificial enzyme mimic hemin/GDY/G-modified electrode exhibited promising ascorbic acid and uric acid detection performance with excellent sensitivity and selectivity, a good linear range, and reproducibility. More importantly, real sample detection and the feasibility of this electrochemical sensor as a wearable biosensor were demonstrated.

Toxicity Effects and Mechanisms of Graphdiyne towards Freshwater Microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus

Wei Hong,Fan Zhang,Zhuang Wang

Graphdiyne (GDY), an emerging 2D carbon nanomaterial, holds promise yet remains unexplored for environmental hazards. Herein, we investigated the toxicity effects and mechanisms of GDY towards the freshwater microalga Scenedesmus obliquus at environmentally relevant concentrations. The results revealed that 1 mg/L of GDY inhibited the growth of the algae and significantly induced a decrease in photosynthetic pigments. Exposure to 0.1 and 1 mg/L of GDY led to a reduction in cell membrane permeability and induced intracellular oxidative stress in the algae. Further, 1 mg/L of GDY caused oxidative damage to the algal cells. Molecular modeling indicated that GDY could directly affect the stability of dsDNA fragment. Transcriptome analysis showed that GDY at 1 mg/L influenced the expression of 2216 genes, with the glycerolipid metabolism pathway being enriched significantly. Metabolome analysis identified 129 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) in the algae exposed to 1 mg/L of GDY, revealing three significantly disrupted pathways: glycerophospholipid metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and flavonoid biosynthesis. The integrated transcriptome and metabolome analysis suggested that GDY exposure downregulated the level of a lysophosphatidylcholine species (LPC 18:3) by inhibiting the expression of genes related to FMN binding molecular functions. Simultaneously, the algae responded to GDY exposure by upregulating genes involved in the biological process of carbohydrate metabolic process and the molecular function of hydrolase activity, as well as increasing the levels of DEMs, specifically a lysophosphatidic acid species (LPA 16:4). This study elucidates the stress mechanisms induced by GDY in aquatic organisms and emphasizes the importance of monitoring its acute biological effects.

Electrochemical detection of uric acid based on platinum nanoparticles/graphdiyne hybrids

Yi Zhang,Chen Ji,Xingtian Wang,Bin Qiu,Huaiyu Chen

The development of cost-effective and high-performance electrochemical sensors for uric acid (UA) detection is critical due to its role as a key biomarker in disease diagnosis. This study presents an innovative sensor based on platinum nanoparticle (Pt NPs) decorated graphdiyne (GDY) nanohybrid (denoted as Pt NPs/GDY), fabricated via a facile electroless deposition method. The hybrid material capitalizes on the synergistic effects of GDY's π-electron-rich structure - enhancing target affinity through π-π stacking, and Pt NPs' dual functionality as conductivity boosters and catalytic activators. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that the Pt NPs/GDY-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) outperforms conventional GDY/GCE and bare GCE, achieving a broad linear range (0.1–7.5 μM) and an ultralow detection limit (30 nM). The sensor also demonstrated exceptional reproducibility, long-term stability, and selectivity against common interferents, validated by successful UA quantification in human urine samples (92.8–98.5 % recovery).

Graphdiyne Nanoparticles with High Free Radical Scavenging Activity for Radiation Protection

Jiani Xie,Ning Wang,Xinghua Dong,Chengyan Wang,Zhen Du,Linqiang Mei,Yuan Yong,Changshui Huang,Yuliang Li,Zhanjun Gu,Yuliang Zhao

Numerous carbon networks materials comprised of benzene moieties, such as graphene and fullerene, have held great fascination for radioprotection because of their acknowledged good biocompatibility and strong free radical scavenging activity derived from their delocalized π-conjugated structure. Recently, graphdiyne, a new emerging carbon network material consisting of a unique chemical structure of benzene and acetylenic moieties, has gradually attracted attention in many research fields. Encouraged by its unique structure with strong conjugated π-system and highly reactive diacetylenic linkages, graphdiyne might have free radical activity and can thus be used as a radioprotector, which has not been investigated so far. Herein, for the first time, we synthesized bovine serum albumin (BSA)-modified graphdiyne nanoparticles (graphdiyne-BSA NPs) to evaluate their free radical scavenging ability and investigate their application for radioprotection both in cell and animal models. In vitro studies indicated that the graphdiyne-BSA NPs could effectively eliminate the free-radicals, decrease radiation-induced DNA damage in cells, and improve the viability of cells under ionizing radiation. In vivo experiments showed that the graphdiyne-BSA NPs could protect the bone marrow DNA of mice from radiation-induced damage and make the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (two kinds of vital indicators of radiation-induced injury) recover back to normal levels. Furthermore, the good biocompatibility and negligible systemically toxicity responses of the graphdiyne-BSA NPs to mice were verified. All these results manifest the good biosafety and radioprotection activity of graphdiyne-BSA NPs to normal tissues. Therefore, our studies not only provide a new radiation protection platform based on graphdiyne for protecting normal tissues from radiation-caused injury but also provide a promising direction for the application of graphdiyne in the biomedicine field.

Application of Graphdiyne in Surface-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Peiqi Luo,Liping Wang,Lixia Jiang,Jie Sun,Yafeng Li,Huihui Liu,Caiqiao Xiong,Zongxiu Nie

Graphdiyne (GD) is a new kind of carbon nanomaterial which has carbon–carbon triple bonds to form a layered structure. Here, we report the application of GD as the matrix for small molecule analysis in laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS). The GD matrix displayed two advantages: little background in the low mass range and good molecular ion signal in negative ion mode for many small molecules, e.g., fatty acids, amino acids, peptides, and drugs can be obtained in negative ion mode. By comparing the signal intensity of tetraphenylborate and juglone with and without GD existing, it was found that GD can enhance both of the desorption efficiency and ionization efficiency in LDI. Through analysis of the serum samples from liver cancer patients and healthy people, the GD-assisted LDI MS results showed that fatty acids could be used as potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis of liver cancer.

Nitrogen-Doped Graphdiyne Quantum Dots for Electrochemical Chloramphenicol Quantification in Water

Qingyu Gu,Zhongxue Wang,Ling Qiao,Jingjing Fan,Yonghui Pan,Ping Wu,Chenxin Cai

Nitrogen-doped graphdiyne quantum dots (NGDYQDs) have been synthesized hydrothermally from sp-hybridized N-doped graphdiyne and employed to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the quantification of chloramphenicol (CAP), a typical nitro group-containing antibiotic, in water. The principle of this quantification is based on the high electrocatalytic activity of NGDYQDs to the reduction of −NO2 groups in CAP to hydroxylamine groups. The effects of the electronic structure and size of the quantum dots on electrocatalytic activity were studied experimentally and theoretically. To prepare a sensor for CAP quantification, a suspension of NGDYQDs was prepared, and the NGDYQDs were deposited on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The prepared sensor showed a linear response to CAP from 0.1 to 114.5 μM with a limit of detection of approximately 5 nM (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3) and a sensitivity of approximately 8.79 μA–1 μM–1 cm–2, as well as high repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. Moreover, the sensor has high selectivity and resistance to interference in the presence of other antibiotics (five randomly selected antibiotics: furazolidone, 2-nitroimidazole, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and erythromycin), common biological compounds (glucose, ascorbic acid, and uric acid), common aqueous ions (Na+, K+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Cl–, Br–, CO32–, SO42–, and NO3–), other nitroaromatic compounds (4-nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline), and common surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton X-100). Furthermore, the sensor was employed to quantify CAP in water samples with high accuracy. Thus, this work provides an electrochemical method for quantifying CAP in real samples with various applications such as biomedical analysis, environmental pollutant detection, and water safety evaluation.

Electrochemical determination of benomyl using MWCNTs interspersed graphdiyne as enhanced electrocatalyst

Shi Min,Xue Shu-Ya,Peng Guan-Wei,Xu Jing-Kun,Gao Yan-Sha,Liu Shu-Wu,Duan Xue-Min,Lu Li-Min

Graphdiyne (GDY) has attracted a lot of interest in electrochemical sensing application with the advantages of a large conjugation system, porous structure, and high structure defects. Herein, to further improve the sensing effect of GDY, conductive MWCNTs were chosen as the signal accelerator. To get a stable composite material, polydopamine (PDA) was employed as connecting bridge between GDY and MWCNTs-NH 2 , where DA was firstly polymerized onto GDY, followed by covalently linking MWCNTs-NH 2 with PDA through Michael-type reaction. The formed GDY@PDA/MWCNTs-NH 2 composite was then explored as an electrochemical sensor for benomyl (Ben) determination. GDY assists the adsorption and accumulation of Ben molecules to the sensing surface, while MWCNTs-NH 2 can enhance the electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity, all of which contributing to the significantly improved performance. The proposed sensor displays an obvious oxidation peak at 0.72 V (vs. Hg|Hg 2 Cl 2 ) and reveals a wide linear range from 0.007 to 10.0 µM and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.8 nM ( S / N  = 3) toward Ben detection. In addition, the sensor shows high stability, repeatability, reproducibility, and selectivity. The feasibility of this sensor was demonstrated by detecting Ben in apple and cucumber samples with a recovery of 94–106% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 2.3% ( n  = 5). Graphical Abstract A sensitive electrochemical sensing platform was reported for benomyl (Ben) determination based on a highly stable GDY@PDA/MWCNTs-NH 2 composite.

Subtly synthesized graphdiyne nano-lamellas as stable electrode material for supercapacitors

Guiquan Liu,Guorong Wang,Zhiliang Jin

Porous carbon is an ingredient for energy transformation and collection systems in terms of electrochemistry. As a new member, graphdiyne (GDY) gradually began to be concerned because of its especially compositional and structural properties. Herein, a lamelliform GDY was successfully prepared by cross-coupling strategy under the catalysis of cuprous iodide. Thanks to the sp and sp 2 hybrid carbon networks, the obtained GDY nano-lamellas promote excellent performance in the electrode of supercapacitors with a gravimetric capacitance of 137.8 F g − 1 at a mass-specific current of 1 A g − 1 , and a relatively good rate performance of 81.28% when the mass-specific current reach to 20 A g − 1 . In addition, the capacitance of the GDY electrode barely decays during the 11,000 cycles of repeated testing. This enables the assembled symmetric supercapacitor provides a acceptable energy density of 6.11Wh kg −1 under a power density of 5500W kg −1 , and with an average decay of 0.5% per cycle at the end of 5000 cycles. The relatively good electrochemical stability of this GDY nano-lamellas material will open the further promotion of graphdiyne-based electrodes in the domain of supercapacitors.

Photocatalytic Properties of Graphdiyne and Graphene Modified TiO2: From Theory to Experiment

Nailiang Yang,Yuanyuan Liu,Hao Wen,Zhiyong Tang,Huijun Zhao,Yuliang Li,Dan Wang

The chemical structure and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) carbon-supported TiO2, TiO2–graphdiyne, and TiO2–graphene composites have been studied by first-principles density functional theory. Calculation results show that TiO2(001)–graphdiyne composites possess superior charge separation and oxidation properties, having the longest lifetimes of photoexcited carriers among all of the 2D composites containing TiO2 of different facets. Our experimental results further proved that TiO2(001)–graphdiyne composites could be a promising photocatalyst. For photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, the rate constant of the TiO2(001)–graphdiyne composite is 1.63 ± 0.15 times that of the pure TiO2(001) and 1.27 ± 0.12 times that of the TiO2(001)–graphene composite.

Graphdiyne–hemin-mediated catalytic system for wound disinfection and accelerated wound healing

Arbab Ali,Jiaming Liu,Huige Zhou,Tao Liu,Muhammad Ovais,Huibiao Liu,Yukui Rui,Chunying Chen

Surgical site infections are the most common and serious concern in health care settings. Currently, systemic administration of prophylactic antibiotics or local disinfection treatment is prescribed after surgical procedures. However, prolonged use of antibiotics may pose adverse side effects, bacterial resistance and hospitalization costs. Recently, the use of nanomaterials with peroxidase enzyme-mimic activity has drawn higher consideration due to their high antibacterial potential and minimum biotoxicity. Hemin is a highly active molecule and also the active source of many biological enzymes, such as peroxidase, which could efficiently catalyze various biochemical reactions. However, the insolubility of hemin makes it easy for it to aggregate and lose its catalytic ability. Here, we designed a well-dispersed hemin/graphdiyne (GDY) nanocomposite (GDY–hemin) with high peroxidase activity. GDY–hemin can decompose hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate highly-toxic hydroxyl radicals that impair bacterial cell membranes, ultimately leading to bacterial death in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The results reveal that GDY–hemin has good biocompatibility and is suitable for wound infection treatment in vivo.

Large-scale CuS nanotube arrays@graphdiyne for high-performance sodium ion battery

Xiangang Zhai,Zicheng Zuo,Zecheng Xiong,Houhe Pan,Xiaoya Gao,Yuliang Li

Copper sulfide (CuS) is emerged as a promising electrode material for Na-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity, environmental friendliness and abundant resource. However, the conversion type mechanism for storing the Na+ causes huge volume variations, irreversible phase changes and disintegration of the structure during charge and discharge processes. These intractable issues lead to the fast capacity degradation, and sluggish reaction kinetics, and performances are hard to fulfill the criteria in practical applications. Herein, the large-scale free-standing CuS nanotube arrays sandwiched by successive graphdiyne (GDY) nanofilm are readily prepared using a simple and efficient strategy. The in-situ protection of GDY nanofilm successfully enhances the structural stability and the network conductivity of the free-standing electrode. The as-obtained CuS electrode protected by GDY exhibits excellent electrochemical sodium storage capability, in the term of long-term reversibility (After 1000 cycles at 2 C, the capacity retention is 78.7%.) and rate performance.

Piezoelectric enhanced sulfur doped graphdiyne nanozymes for synergistic ferroptosis–apoptosis anticancer therapy

Wang Jianxin,Chu Yinzhu,Zhao Zhiyu,Zhang Cong,Chen Qi,Ran Haitao,Cao Yang,Wu Changjun

Graphdiyne has excellent potential due to its enzymatic properties. Metal-free sulfur-doped Graphdiyne (S-GDY) has piezoelectric characteristics, and ultrasonic excitation of S-GDY enhances peroxidase activity. It can turn hydrogen peroxide into toxic hydroxyl radicals and induce apoptosis in 4T1 cells. More importantly, the ultrasound (US) enhanced nanozyme induced 4T1 cell ferroptosis by promoting an imbalanced redox reaction due to glutathione depletion and glutathione peroxidase 4 inactivation. S-GDY exhibited enhanced nanozyme activity in vitro and in vivo that may directly trigger apoptosis-ferroptosis for effective tumor therapy. Altogether, this study was expected to provide new insights into the design of piezoelectric catalytic nanozyme and expand their application in the catalytic therapy of tumors.Graphical Abstract
