Preparation and Antifiltration Performance of Organic Zirconium Crosslinker for Guar Gum-Fracturing Fluid

Yirong Chen,Yufang Wang,Wei Wei,Jiahui He

Aiming at the characteristics of low shear resistance and high filtration loss of guar gum-fracturing fluid, a high-efficiency organic zirconium crosslinker was prepared. In addition, the effects of different factors on the filtration coefficient and apparent viscosity of fracturing fluid were studied, and this study explores the micro mechanisms of various factors affecting the filtration coefficient from a molecular dynamics perspective. The results show that the antifiltration ability of guar gum-fracturing fluid is inversely proportional to the fluid viscosity. The increase of crosslinker content and reservoir pressure is beneficial to improve the viscosity and antishear ability of guar gum-fracturing fluid. When the crosslinker content is 0.25% and pressure is 30 MPa, the fracturing fluid parameters are 145 mPa·s and 2.1 × 10 −2 m 3 · min 1/2 , respectively, while the increase of reservoir temperature and the shear rate reduces the rheology and shear resistance of guar gum-fracturing fluid, so that the viscosity and filtration coefficient of fracturing fluid at 180°C and 200 s -1 are 123 mPa·s and 2.3 × 10 -2 m 3 ·min 1/2 , respectively. This work not only paves a new avenue for synthesizing organic zirconium as a crosslinker but also provides an efficient measure to reduce the filtration of guar gum-fracturing fluid on the oil and gas reservoirs.

Multifunctional dynamic chitosan-guar gum nanocomposite hydrogels in infection and diabetic wound healing

Luning He,Shuyi Xing,Weikang Zhang,Ying Wang,Yian Li,Jinghao Chen,Jinghai Zhang,Siling Wang,Qinfu Zhao

Traditional wound care methods are less effective for infectious and diabetic wounds, highlighting an urgent need for effective strategies. The study aimed to design a self-healing hydrogel with antibacterial, antioxidant, and photothermal capabilities to treat infectious and diabetic wounds. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were loaded into mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) nanoparticles to form Ag@MPDA nanoparticles. Ag@MPDA was incorporated into the cationic guar gum-chitosan-boric acid (CCB) hydrogel to obtain the PA-CCB hydrogel. PA-CCB hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing and adhesive properties, adapting well to the dynamic wound environment. PA-CCB hydrogel combined with photothermal therapy (PTT) could effectively eradicated E. coli (99.9 %) and S. aureus (99.7 %). The PA-CCB hydrogel reduced excessive reactive oxygen species and promoted the migration of fibroblasts in vitro. In the infected mouse wound models, the PA-CCB hydrogel effectively inhibited bacteria. After combining with PTT, the antibacterial ability of the PA-CCB hydrogel was further enhanced. In the diabetic mouse wound models, the PA-CCB hydrogel reduced the inflammatory level of wound tissue. In both models, after combining with PTT, the PA-CCB hydrogel exhibited further improvements in angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and re-epithelialization. By integrating multifunctional hydrogel with PTT, the PA-CCB hydrogel exhibited broad application potential for infectious and diabetic wounds.

Molecular interactions between guar gum and coix seed endogenous constituents modulating starch digestion kinetics

Yue Song,Yutong Chen,Yi Yi,Chenzhi Kan,Fei Lyu,Yangyue Ding,Xuewei Ye,Jianyou Zhang,Gaopeng Zhang

The hydrophilic colloid–starch composite system has been widely employed to enhance the quality and processing performance of grain-based products. Extrusion, as a cost-effective and efficient processing technology, holds considerable promise for the production of starch-based foods. Using optimized processing parameters, this study investigated the effects of extrusion treatment and guar gum (GG) supplementation on the physicochemical properties, spatial structure, and related characteristics of Coix seed (B), Coix seed starch (BS), and defatted Coix seed starch (TB), both before and after extrusion. An in vitro digestion model was further established to clarify the interactions among GG, endogenous proteins, and lipids, as well as the mechanisms underlying these interactions. The results showed that: (I) the GG–BS group showed the strongest synergistic interaction and binding capacity; (II) among the extrusion-treated samples, extruded brown rice starch with GG (EBSG) displayed the lowest starch digestibility; and (III) extrusion treatment significantly decreased protein digestibility and free amino acid content in the B group. These results suggest that complexes formed between starch and GG hinder the binding of digestive enzymes, suppressing starch digestion and absorption. This study provides a valuable theoretical basis for the development of low glycemic index (GI) foods.

pH-responsive guar gum-based hydrogels for controlled release and antifungal applications of carvacrol

Yikang Zhang,Maosong Lin,Yuran Wang,Bowei Yin,Jianglan Qu

Plant essential oil-based pesticides are increasingly valued in green agriculture for their efficacy, environmental compatibility, low toxicity, and minimal impact on non-target organisms. However, their practical use remains limited by short efficacy periods, poor photostability, and low solubility. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a pH-responsive hydrogel composed of carvacrol and the natural polysaccharides chitosan (CS) and guar gum (GG), which improved photostability by 126 %. The CS-GG hydrogel exhibited accelerated carvacrol release under acidic conditions, showing a relative increase of 20 % and following a Weibull diffusion model, thereby enabling targeted drug delivery at infection sites. Encapsulation markedly enhanced antifungal performance against anthracnose, achieving superior mycelial inhibition on tomato surfaces in both preventive and curative treatments compared with unencapsulated carvacrol. Moreover, hydrogel encapsulation reduced acute toxicity by minimizing direct exposure, as reflected by zebrafish LC 50 values that increased by approximately 71 % at 48 h and 46 % at 96 h, thereby significantly improving ecological safety. These findings demonstrate that the pH-responsive CS-GG hydrogel offers a promising platform for controlled delivery of botanical pesticides. This approach not only provides an effective, environmentally friendly solution for anthracnose control but also establishes a versatile framework for advancing the application of other plant-derived pesticides in sustainable crop protection.

Flexible and stable quasi-solid-state zinc ion battery with conductive guar gum electrolyte

Yuan Huang,Jiyan Zhang,Jiuwei Liu,Zixuan Li,Shunyu Jin,Zigang Li,Shengdong Zhang,Hang Zhou

Flexible zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have been regarded as alternative portable energy storage technology for wearable or flexible electronics due to their low cost and high safety performance. Development of stable solid-state electrolyte with high ionic conductivity is a key to the practical application of ZIBs. Herein, we construct a high rate performance and long cycling life quasi-solid-state ZIB using guar gum bio-polymer electrolyte. The eco-friendly electrolyte synthesized in this work is highly flexible and conductive (1.07 × 10 −2  S cm −1 at room temperature). As a result, our flexible quasi-solid-state ZIBs deliver a high specific capacity (308.2 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 ), and fast charging and discharging capability (131.6 mAh g −1 at 6.0 A g −1 ). The elastic guar gum electrolyte can effectively suppress the formation of zinc dendrites during cycling, leading to a remarkable cycling cyclability (100% capacity retention after 1900 cycles, 85% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 6.0 A g −1 ) and high bending durability (81.3% capacity retention after continuously bending to 180° for 1000 cycles). Moreover, the solid-state ZIBs with guar gum electrolyte also function in a wide temperature window (5–45 °C) and deliver a better low-temperature performance than that with aqueous electrolyte. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that demonstrates high-performance ZIBs with guar gum as the electrolyte, and achieves the best cycling performance ever reported for ZIBs (Zn–MnO 2 ) with solid-state electrolyte.

Hydratability and improved fermentability in vitro of guar gum by combination of xanthan gum

Xiong Xia,Hongkui Wei,Lingling Hu,Jian Peng

Dietary fibers with high water-binding capacity (WBC), swelling capacity (SC) and fermentability regulate food intake and intestinal microbiota. However, dietary fibers with such properties are generally rare or expensive. We evaluated SC, WBC, fermentability and bacterial shifts during in vitro fermentations of guar gum (GG), xanthan gum (XG) and the combined gum (CG) of XG and GG. SC and WBC were enhanced by the combination of GG and XG. Fermentation of CG showed similar Short chain fatty acids production and lower molecular weight compared with GG. Analyzing of fermentation kinetics by logistic-exponential model, initial fractional rate of degradation of CG were remarkable higher than GG. Microbiota analysis revealed that GG enriched Fusobacterium , Bacteriodes and Prevotella_9 , and CG lead to promotion of Sphaerochaeta , Prevotella_9 , Bacteroides and Christensenellaceae_R-7_group . These data suggest that combination of XG to GG changed hydration and fermentation characteristics of GG, and CG resulted in promotion of beneficial microbiota.

Impact of electrical conductivity on acid hydrolysis of guar gum under induced electric field

Dandan Li,Yao Zhang,Na Yang,Zhengyu Jin,Xueming Xu

This study aimed to improve induced electric field (IEF)-assisted hydrolysis of polysaccharide by controlling electrical conductivity. As the conductivity of reaction medium was increased, the energy efficiency of IEF was increased because of deceased impedance, as well as enhanced output voltage and temperature, thus the hydrolysis of guar gum (GG) was accelerated under IEF. Changes in weight-average molecular weight (Mw) suggested that IEF-assisted hydrolysis of GG could be described by the first-order kinetics 1/Mw ∝  k t, with the rate constant ( k ), varying directly with the medium conductivity. Although IEF-assisted hydrolysis largely disrupted the morphological structure of GG, it had no impact on the chemical structure. In comparison to native GG, the steady shear viscosity of hydrolyzed GG dramatically declined while the thermal stability slightly decreased. This study extended the knowledge of electrical conductivity upon IEF-assisted acid hydrolysis of GG and might contribute to a better utilization of IEF for polysaccharide modification.

Ultraflexible Self-Healing Guar Gum-Glycerol Hydrogel with Injectable, Antifreeze, and Strain-Sensitive Properties

Xiaofeng Pan,Qinhua Wang,Dengwen Ning,Lei Dai,Kai Liu,Yonghao Ni,Lihui Chen,Liulian Huang

Recently, flexible, injectable, and strain-sensitive hydrogels have attracted great research interest for application as electronic skin and wearable strain sensors. The synergistic integration of high flexibility, rapid self-healing, and antifreezing properties makes injectable, strain-sensitive, and self-healing guar gum hydrogels still a great challenge. Here, inspired by the strong hydrogen bonding of glycerol and water, the chelation cross-linking between glycerol and borax, we constructed a compact three-dimensional dynamic cross-linked net formed of glycerol–water–borax. Under stress, dynamic interactions of glycerol–water–borax net act as sacrificial bond energy for effective dissipation, which enables the hydrogel to achieve high flexibility, stretchability, and injectability. More importantly, because of the presence of glycerol, the antifreeze and moisturizing properties of the gel are improved. The hydrogel also exhibited an ultrafast self-healing ability of only 15 s. In addition, the results show that the hydrogel has self-adhesive properties and strain sensitivity. The hydrogels have the potential to be used to make flexible, wearable, and 3D-printable electronic skin and strain-sensitive sensors.

Guar Gum-based multifunctional hydrogels with high sensitivity and negligible hysteresis for wearable electronics

Chao Feng,Juqun Xi,Qiang Gao,Shaohui Cheng,Ming Shen

As a classic flexible material, hydrogel shows great potential in wearable electronics. However, it remains a challenge to prepare hydrogels that simultaneously have robust toughness, strong mechanical properties, high conductivity, fit to human skin, and strain sensitivity. In this work, oxidized guar gum (OGG) and acrylamide (AM) were used to create a novel hydrogel that is highly strain-sensitive. The hydrogel reveals a skin-like elastic modulus (∼ 29 kPa), high toughness (732.3 kJ·m −3 ), high breaking elongation (1060%), high adhesion, high self-healing efficiency (96%), and negligible lag (η = 3.9%, energy loss coefficient). Meanwhile, it has good biocompatibility and outstanding antimicrobial qualities. In addition, the introduction of iron ions may increase the conductivity (1.1 S·m −1 ) while maintaining high transparency, and the gel-based sensor exhibits high sensitivity (GF=11.82). The highly sensitive sensors exhibit very fast response time (55–60 ms) and adequate stability (2000 cycles). Interestingly, hydrogel sensors can monitor a variety of human movements, including large-scale joint bending and tiny facial expressions, gesture recognition and handwriting. In addition, it has been successfully used to transmit encrypted information, human-machine interaction and wireless sensing.

Self-Healing Guar Gum-Based Nanocomposite Hydrogel Promotes Infected Wound Healing through Photothermal Antibacterial Therapy

Weijia Yang,Quanyue Zhang,Jiayi Zhou,Lin Li,Yan Li,Li Zhu,Ravin Narain,Kaihui Nan,Yangjun Chen

Preventing bacterial infections is a crucial aspect of wound healing. There is an urgent need for multifunctional biomaterials without antibiotics to promote wound healing. In this study, we fabricated a guar gum (GG)-based nanocomposite hydrogel, termed GBTF, which exhibited photothermal antibacterial therapy for infected wound healing. The GBTF hydrogel formed a cross-linked network through dynamic borate/diol interactions between GG and borax, thereby exhibiting simultaneously self-healing, adaptable, and injectable properties. Additionally, tannic acid (TA)/Fe3+ nanocomplexes (NCs) were incorporated into the hydrogel to confer photothermal antibacterial properties. Under the irradiation of an 808 nm near-infrared laser, the TA/Fe3+ NCs in the hydrogel could rapidly generate heat, leading to the disruption of bacterial cell membranes and subsequent bacterial eradication. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibited good cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility, making them a precandidate for preclinical and clinical applications. Finally, they could significantly promote bacteria-infected wound healing by reducing bacterial viability, accelerating collagen deposition, and promoting epithelial remodeling. Therefore, the multifunctional GBTF hydrogel, which was composed entirely of natural substances including guar gum, borax, and polyphenol/ferric ion NCs, showed great potential for regenerating infected skin wounds in clinical applications.

Multifunctional oxidized hyaluronic acid/quaternized guar gum/polyvinylpyrrolidone hydrogel for hemostasis and infected wound management

Qiuxia Guo,Peng Fan,Xinyi Liu,Cui Zeng,Shige Wang,Huadong Li

Uncontrolled hemorrhage and bacterial infection remain critical challenges in wound management, necessitating advanced dressings that integrate rapid hemostasis, antibacterial activity, and tissue regeneration. Herein, we present a multifunctional injectable hydrogel (QGHP) composed of oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), quaternized guar gum (QGG), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via dual dynamic crosslinking (Schiff base bonds and hydrogen bonds). This design imparts QGHP with rapid self-healing capability, strong tissue adhesion, shear-thinning injectability, and customizable mechanical properties. The hydrogel demonstrates exceptional fluid absorption (swelling ratio: ~1148 %) and controlled degradation. Cationic groups of QGG confer intrinsic broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, achieving >95 % inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli without antibiotics. In a rat tail amputation model, QGHP achieves rapid hemostasis (~17 s) and reduces blood loss by ~84 %. For infected wounds, QGHP accelerates closure, suppresses bacterial proliferation (~3.5 % survival), and enhances collagen deposition and re-epithelialization. The dual-network hydrogel combines injectability, bio-adhesion, and antibacterial functionality, offering a promising solution for complex wound healing.

A fully biobased tough hydrogel derived from guar gum and gelatin as a flexible sensor

Zixuan Wei,Hongxin Zhou,Yingying Meng,Ting Wu,Junjie Li,Yuping Wei

Biobased hydrogels have been widely used in drug delivery, tissue engineering and biosensors due to their abundance, non-toxicity and biocompatibility. However, constructing fully biobased hydrogels with good mechanical performance still remains a challenge. Herein, a double network (DN) hydrogel consisting of oxidized hydroxypropyl guar gum (OHPG) and gelatin (Gel) was fabricated via Schiff base reaction. The Gel-OHPG hydrogel had an elongation at break of 497%, a tensile stress of 0.44 MPa and a compressive stress of 25.91 MPa. Then, the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were further enhanced through immersing it in an ammonium sulfate (AMS) solution due to the Hofmeister effect. Its elongation could reach 629% and the corresponding tensile toughness and compressive stress were 3.86 MPa and 59.55 MPa, respectively. The conductivity of the hydrogel was 0.86 S m−1. Furthermore, the Gel-OHPG hydrogel was fabricated as a flexible sensor, and it could accurately monitor human joint motions such as fingers, wrists, knees, elbows, throat and neck. Henceforth, the Gel-OHPG hydrogel prepared using fully natural polymers has promising potential in flexible sensors and tissue engineering.
