Oxygen Vacancy-Engineered FeP/BiOBr Heterojunction for Enhanced Photo-Fenton Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride: Synergistic Catalysis and Mechanistic Insights

Haixia Li,Chuanqiang Yin,Dan Li,Feigao Xu

In this study, oxygen vacancy-engineered FeP/BiOBr heterojunction composites (FB-3) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method to achieve enhanced tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation through a visible-light-driven photo-Fenton process. Systematic characterizations (SEM, XRD, XPS, and EPR) confirmed the successful integration of FeP with BiOBr, which modulated the band structure, introduced abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), and suppressed photogenerated carrier recombination. Under the optimized conditions (0.2 g L–1 catalyst, 10 mM H2O2, and pH 4.2), the FB-3 composite achieved 94.2% TCH removal at an initial concentration of 40 mg L–1 within 90 min, with 73.9% TOC mineralization and minimal iron leaching of only 0.21 mg L–1. Mechanistic studies revealed that OVs acted as electron traps, accelerating Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycling and synergistically activating H2O2 to generate dominant reactive radicals (•OH and •O2–). Radical trapping experiments and EPR analysis validated the critical roles of photogenerated carriers and OVs in enhancing surface kinetics. The composite exhibited robust performance in diverse water matrices, demonstrating potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Trace-Dissolved S(-II) Triggers the Fe(III)-Activated H2O2 Process for Organic Pollutant Degradation by Promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) Cycle: Kinetics, Toxicity, and Mechanisms

Kunjie Hou,Zhoujie Pi,Fei Chen,Li He,Fubing Yao,Shengjie Chen,Xiaoming Li,Haoran Dong,Qi Yang

The practical application of the traditional Fenton system (Fe(II)/H2O2) is seriously hampered by the sluggish Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and the stringent acidic reaction condition. In this work, we found that trace-dissolved S(-II) (DS(-II), 5 μM) could significantly accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and trigger a rapid H2O2 activation process in the Fe(III)/H2O2 system. Thus, more hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were generated for the rapid removal of various organic pollutants such as bisphenol A (BPA) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from water. Besides, the additive DS(-II) effectively broadened the application pH range of the Fenton or Fenton-like system. The constructed Fe(III)/DS(-II)/H2O2 system showed extensive applicability to different water matrices and maintained high BPA removal in the actual water sources. Furthermore, the toxicity assessment revealed that the toxicity of the target contaminant was diminished. The harmless SO42– was the final product of DS(-II) in the Fe(III)/DS(-II)/H2O2 system, and the residual DS(-II) was less than the threshold limit value for fresh or saltwater (0.5 mg/L). This discovery is expected to promote the large-scale practical application of iron-based Fenton or Fenton-like systems in practical organic wastewater purification.

Synthesis of a Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI Z-scheme photocatalyst as a highly efficient photo-assisted Fenton-like catalyst for the removal of chlortetracycline hydrochloride

Qi Wen,Di Li,Chunyan Gao,Yuhang Xue,Lei Wu,Fang Song,Jun Zhou

In this paper, ultra-thin nanofiber PDI was obtained by self-assembly dispersion of commercial PDINH. A novel Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst material was constructed by a simple solvothermal method. XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and other characterization techniques proved the successful preparation of the Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst material. By degrading chlortetracycline hydrochloride, it was found that the photocatalytic activity of Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI was much higher than that of pure Co/Ni-MOF-74 and PDI. Subsequently, Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI was used to activate H2O2 to further improve the degradation efficiency of chlortetracycline hydrochloride. It was found that the photocatalytic performance was greatly improved after the addition of 19.6 mM H2O2 to the system, and the degradation rate of chlortetracycline hydrochloride was 87% within 90 min. The electron transfer pathway and H2O2 activation mechanism of the Co/Ni-MOF-74@PDI composite photocatalyst were proved by free radical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and X-ray electron spectroscopy. Finally, the easy exfoliation point and degradation pathway of chlortetracycline hydrochloride were studied using density functional theory, UPLC-MS and toxicity evaluation software. It was found that the main active substances were h+, ˙O2, 1O2 and ˙OH, and the toxicity of chlortetracycline hydrochloride and its intermediates was evaluated.

The key role of crystal boron in enhanced degradation of refractory contaminants using heterogeneous Fe3+/SPC system

Haiying Gao,Hui Yu,Jun Yu,Tianhui Xu,Yiming Feng,Yan Wang,Jun Qian,Chaoqun Tan

An origin Fenton-like system was discussed for the abatement of refractory contaminants. Sodium percarbonate (SPC) was utilized as the source of H 2 O 2 and crystal boron ( C -boron) was applied to enhance the activation of H 2 O 2 . Under the conditions of 0.50 mM Fe 3+ , 0.34 mM SPC, and heterogeneous catalysis using 100 mg L −1   C -boron, four target pollutants, at the initial concentrations of 20 μM, could be efficiently degraded by the Fenton-like system, with a degradation rate within 20 min up to 81.1% (aspirin, ASA), 92.8% (nitrobenzene, NB), 94.7% (flunixin meglumine, FMME), and 94.3% (benzoic acid, BA) respectively and total organic carbon removal up to 25.0%. The increase of Fe 2+ concentration indicated that the conversion of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ was remarkably promoted by C -boron. Degradation reactions at acidic pH were comparatively fast, with pH-dependent k obs of 9.9 × 10 −2 min −1 (ASA), 1.5 × 10 −1 min −1 (NB), 1.7 × 10 −1 min −1 (FMME), and 1.9 × 10 −1 min −1 (BA), whereas those at neutral and alkaline pH were slower. Furthermore, reactive oxygen species including · OH, 1 O 2 , and O 2 · − were identified by in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance tests. The contribution ratios of · OH turned out to be about 71.3–86.7% for the decomposition of four contaminants. The elimination of natural organic matter and the performance of material recycling highlighted the potential for its application in water treatment . The inhibition rate of Chlorella pyrenoidosa reached 211.9% in the C -boron/Fe 3+ /SPC system. The relatively high algae toxicity limited its application scope, which requires additional research to resolve.

Degradation of Cephalosporin C using MOF-derived Fe-Co bimetal in carbon cages as electro-Fenton catalyst at natural pH

Yaoyu Zhou,Jianlong Wang

Developing high performance electrocatalysts for effective antibiotics elimination for heterogeneous electro-Fenton (Hetero-EF) process is still a challenge. This work synthesized iron/cobalt bimetallic N doped graphitic carbon cages (Fe x Co@NC) from ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Fe dual MOF composite for Cephalosporin C (CEP-C) degradation in the Hetero-EF system at a wide pH range. Results indicated that CEP-C degradation rate and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency by Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst were as high as 82.45% (60 min) and 61.35% (240 min) at natural pH, respectively. The unique structure with FeCo bimetal encapsulated inside the N doped graphitic carbon cages enabled Fe 40 Co@NC to show excellent catalytic reactivity for H 2 O 2 activation. The generated M (•OH) and •OH all contributed to CEP-C degradation. The synergistic effects of Co 0 /Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 0 /Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycles made Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst to continuously activate H 2 O 2 . Moreover, Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst showed good stability in consecutive cycles, and could still remain excellent reactivity when applied for CEP-C degradation from the real CEP-C fermentation residue supernatant. Furthermore, a possible CEP-C degradation pathway was proposed based on the identified intermediates.
