Shish-kebab structure evolution of HDPE/UHMWPE during hot drawing

Feng Zhang,Xuefeng Pan,Fengtao Li,Jiajia Xu,Xuelian He

Using a solution-mixing method, this research aimed to fabricate high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite materials with uniform dispersion. By incorporating a small quantity of UHMWPE as a nucleating agent, additional contact points were introduced to enhance the crystallization rate of the HDPE matrix. Thermal stretching experiments were conducted on composite systems with varying UHMWPE contents and molecular weight additions at different temperatures. Elevating the stretching temperature was found to decrease the yield strain and yield strength, extend the stage of tensile plastic deformation, and diminish the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. Notably, stretching at temperatures ranging from 90 to 110°C accentuated the development of internal crystal orientation structures. Under low strain conditions, crystal slip was observed to be concentrated, with single crystals undergoing continuous stretching and breaking, resulting in a decrease in the long period. Conversely, at high strains, the induced formation of oriented lamellar structures was observed. Highlights Prepared HDPE/UHMWPE blends by UHMWPE with varying molecular weights. Analyzed the alterations in the HDPE/UHMWPE blends' internal crystal structure. Influence of UHMWPE addition, temperature on the evolution of crystal structure.

Preparation of high antistatic HDPE/polyaniline encapsulated graphene nanoplatelet composites by solution blending

Quan Wang,Yuming Wang,Qingguo Meng,Tinglan Wang,Weihong Guo,Genhua Wu,Li You

Graphene nanoplatelets with excellent electrical conductivity in polymer matrices are highly promising for the industrial application of electrical conductive materials, however, poor dispersion results in high contents of graphene nanoplatelets being required for electrical property enhancement. In this study, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP)@polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ polymerization whereas the compatibility between GNP@PANI nanocomposites and the polymer matrix improved significantly due to graphene nanoplatelet encapsulation with polyaniline. GNP@PANI nanocomposites were utilized to prepare a permanent antistatic high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite through solution blending and press forming in order for GNP@PANI nanocomposites to be dispersed homogeneously in the HDPE. The dispersion and compatibility of GNP@PANI nanocomposites in the HDPE were verified by morphology characterization, resulting in significant improvement of the electrical properties of the GNP@PANI/HDPE composites. It was observed that surface resistivity (ρs) and volume resistivity (ρv) decreased sharply with a 10 wt% GNP@PANI addition of nanocomposites. The results displayed that in situ polymerization and solution blending were effective methods for a conductive network establishment by addition of only 2 wt% of GNP and 8 wt% of PANI.

Alkylated Lignin/HDPE Composites With Enhanced Photoaging Resistance, Antioxidant Activity, and Mechanical Properties

Yunhe Xie,Qibin Zeng,Yifan Liu,Zhenglin Huang,Saile Chen,Minghua Liu

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) undergoes significant degradation and aging during prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation and oxidative environments, leading to a pronounced decline in performance. However, developing efficient and sustainable stabilization strategies to enhance the photostability of HDPE remains a major challenge. To address this issue, alkylated lignin (AL) was synthesized via chemical modification as a functional filler to improve compatibility with the nonpolar HDPE matrix, thereby maximizing the intrinsic anti-aging potential of lignin. The results revealed that at an AL content of 5 wt%, the HDPE-AL5 composite exhibited optimal tensile strength and elongation at break, even slightly outperforming neat HDPE. Oxidation induction time (OIT) analysis indicated that the OIT of HDPE-AL5 extended from 32.46 to 50.93 min, significantly outperforming neat HDPE. Ultraviolet – visible spectroscopy confirmed that the HDPE-AL composites nearly completely provided UV shielding throughout the entire ultraviolet spectrum. After 5 days of irradiation under a xenon lamp, the elongation at break of neat HDPE decreased to 8.77%, whereas HDPE-AL5 maintained nearly 100% of its original mechanical properties. In summary, the HDPE-AL5 composite preserves inherent mechanical strength while enhancing UV-shielding and antioxidant capabilities. This approach offers a promising route for developing sustainable, high-performance polyethylene materials suitable for outdoor applications. Highlights Alkylated lignin (AL) exhibits excellent interfacial bonding strength with HDPE. The HDPE-AL5 composite retains the original mechanical properties of HDPE. AL endows HDPE with excellent oxidation and UV resistance. After xenon-lamp aging, HDPE-AL5 retains excellent mechanical properties.

Pressure-Induced Flow Fabrication of Anisotropic Thermally Conductive and Insulating CF@SiC/HDPE Composites

Ya Wu,Lei Zheng,Mingliang Wang,Xuhuang Chen

Mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers (MPCFs) are promising thermally conductive fillers but suffer from high electrical conductivity and significant interfacial thermal resistance. We propose a dual strategy combining interfacial covalent bonding with pressure-induced flow (PIF) orientation to overcome these limitations. A core-satellite hybrid filler (CF@SiC) was synthesized by covalently grafting SiC onto oxidized MPCFs using a silane molecular bridge, aiming to enhance interfacial phonon transport while insulating the conductive core. Processed into HDPE composites via PIF, the hybrids exhibited high alignment, yielding significant thermal anisotropy. At a 30 wt% loading, the composite achieved a high in-plane thermal conductivity of 6.83 W·m −1 K −1 . Crucially, the composite maintained an outstanding volume resistivity of 1.81 × 10 15 Ω, outperforming the percolated control composite by five orders of magnitude. This work effectively resolves the conductor-insulator paradox, offering a versatile strategy for developing directionally thermally conductive yet electrically insulating polymer composites.

The study on microstructure and mechanical properties of multi-component composite based on HDPE

Yazhen Wang,Chenglong Wang,Shaobo Dong,Liwu Zu,Tianyu Lan

The basalt fiber (BF) and polyamide 6 (PA6) reinforced HDPE composite were prepared; the effects of adding fiber, organic filler, and polar component maleic anhydride (MA) on the microstructural characteristics of composites were investigated. Microstructural characterization evidenced the binary-dispersed phase (PA6/BF) is of a core-shell structure in which the component PA6 encapsulates component BF, and the extent of encapsulates would decline with the MA adding. It is confirmed that the microstructure is related to the interfacial tension of components by the SEM observation and theoretical calculation. The effect of multi-component on the crystallization behavior of composites was investigated. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analyses showed a significant change in the HDPE microstructure. It demonstrated PA6 and BF as a nucleation agent accelerated the crystallization rate under the cooling process. The corresponding crystallization kinetics and activation energy were further analyzed using the Jeziorny method, Avrami–Ozawa method, Kissinger method. The results showed MA markedly changed the crystal growth mechanism of the HDPE matrix to heterogeneous nucleation for acicular and tabular crystal growth during the annealing step. The lowest crystallinity energy and crystallinity were observed for BF/PA6/HDPE composites with 3 wt % MA. Furthermore, a clear improvement of mechanical properties (by 61%) were observed, which mechanism is discussed in detail. The mechanism of toughening is not only one, but the result of a variety of mechanisms together.

Effects of CeO2 nano-particles on anti-aging performance of HDPE polymer during friction

Shifan Li,Conglin Dong,Chengqing Yuan,Shutian Liu,Xiuqin Bai

The water-lubricated polymer stern tube bearing is a key-component which has great influences on operational reliability and safety of marine power systems . The poor thermal conductivity and frictional heat generated by friction easily cause severe deforming behaviours on the polymer bearing contacting surfaces, and lead to the high coefficient of friction as well as fluctuations. Therefore, for figuring out the tribological properties of polymer matrix composites after being modified by nano-fillers and conducted aging treatments, an array of high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites composed with CeO 2 were manufactured and tested on a commercial tribo-tester. The results showed that the CeO 2 nano-particles had a significant effect on the anti-aging property of HDPE and affected its tribology properties. Compared with the pure HDPE, CeO 2 nano-particles could reduce the COF after aging, and the COF reduction rate reached maximum to 46.6% after aging for 25 d. The CeO 2 nano-particles reduced the internal molecular chain fractures of the modified polymer under aging conditions, and slowed down the descending trends of the typical physical properties of polymer. The tribology properties of the modified polymer were enhanced by CeO 2 nano-particles compared with the pure HDPE, and the reinforcement model was disclosed in the end. The knowledge gained herein will be useful for designing a new water lubricated bearing polymer with good anti-aging property for extending its applications under extreme circumstances.

One-pot preparation of hydrophobic lignin/SiO2 nanoparticles and its reinforcing effect on HDPE

Haixu Wang,Dongjie Yang,Wenlong Xiong,Weifeng Liu,Xueqing Qiu

Nano silica (SiO 2 ) is usually used as a common reinforcing agent in polymer materials, in which the interfacial interaction greatly affects the mechanical properties of the composites. The reinforcement effect of silica on non-polar polymer is restricted due to their poor compatibility. In this work, amphipathic lignin modified by quaternization and alkylation was used as a modifier for silica to prepare hydrophobic lignin/SiO 2 nanoparticles by in-situ one-pot co-precipitation method. In alkaline solution, hydrophobic lignin and SiO 2 (from Na 2 SiO 3 ) were self-assembled to form nanospheres through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The results showed that the lignin/SiO 2 nanoparticles were highly hydrophobic nanospheres with macropores in the surface. When the lignin/SiO 2 nanoparticles (10 wt%) were added to reinforce high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the mechanical properties of HDPE were improved with the strength of 24.5 MPa and the elongation of 1096%, which were increased by 10.4% and 14.3% compared with the control HDPE, because of the good compatibility and large bonding area. This work puts forward a new solution for the application of lignin in reinforcement of non-polar polymers.

Effect of Preservative Pretreatment on the Biological Durability of Corn Straw Fiber/HDPE Composites

Lihui Xuan,Dongxue Hui,Wanli Cheng,Andrew H. H. Wong,Guangping Han,Wei Khong Tan,Carlson A. D. Tawi

The effects of alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) and zinc borate (ZB) on the resistance of corn stalk fiber (CSF)-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites to biodegradation were examined. Both biocides could inhibit termites, mold fungi, and wood-decay fungi, even at high CSF formulations (i.e., 60%). Additionally, ACQ enhanced the resistance of the composite materials to certain biotic stresses better than ZB. The CSF/HDPE composites treated with ACQ at the 3.0% level exhibited a superior performance against termites, white rot fungi, and brown rot fungi. ACQ treatment at the 1% level was optimal for inhibiting soft rot fungi. Furthermore, mold growth was not observed on ACQ-treated CSF/HDPE samples. The untreated CSF/HDPE composites were more susceptible to mold infections and decay than the untreated poplar/HDPE composites, likely because of an incomplete removal of the pith. The chemical features of the corn stalk may also have influenced these differences, but this possibility will need to be explored in future investigations. Furthermore, the CSF component of CSF/HDPE composites is highly susceptible to fungal attacks, with the soft rot fungus inducing the largest mass losses, followed by the white rot fungus, and then the brown rot fungus. Keywords:corn stalk fiber;high-density polyethylene;alkaline copper quaternary;zinc borate;termite;mold;wood-decay fungi

Preparation and Finite Element Analysis of Fly Ash/HDPE Composites for Large Diameter Bellows

Angxuan Wu,Lan Jia,Wenwen Yu,Fengbo Zhu,Fuyong Liu,Yanqin Wang,Guoyun Lu,Shuhao Qin,Dongyang Gao,Hua Wang,Xiaogang Wu,Qiang Zheng

In recent years, buried bellows have often had safety accidents such as pipeline bursts and ground subsidence due to the lack of adequate mechanical properties and other quality problems. In order to improve the mechanical properties of bellows, fly ash (FA) was used as a reinforced filler in high density polyethylene (HDPE) to develop composites. The FA was surface treated with a silane coupling agent and HDPE-g-maleic anhydride was used as compatibilizer. Dumbbell-shaped samples were prepared via extrusion blending and injection molding. The cross-section morphology, thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. It was observed that when 10% modified FA and 5% compatibilizer were added to HDPE, the tensile yield strength and tensile breaking strength of the composites were nearly 30.2% and 40.4% higher than those of pure HDPE, respectively, and the Young’s modulus could reach 1451.07 MPa. In addition, the ring stiffness of the bellows was analyzed using finite element analysis. Compared with a same-diameter bellows fabricated from common commercially available materials, the ring stiffness increased by nearly 23%. The preparation method of FA/HDPE is simple, efficient, and low-cost. It is of great significance for the popularization of high-performance bellows and the high value-added utilization of FA.Keywords:fly ash;high density polyethylene;composite materials;bellows;mechanical properties;finite element analysis

Preparation of an anti-fouling silicone polyacrylate/SiO2/HDPE composite for industrial wastewater pipe

Min Li,Rui Zhao,Sude Ma

To mitigate clogging during industrial wastewater piping, a low surface energy composite was prepared by incorporating Silicon-containing acrylate polymer (SAP) and hydrophobically modified SiO 2 nanoparticles into High-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix. The morphological structure, thermal behavior, and anti-fouling performance of the composite were studied. The results showed that the prepared composite has both good thermal stability and compatibility. The acrylate polymer and nanoparticles in the composite not only enhance its hydrophobicity but also decrease the associated surface energy, which may reduce pipe clogging potentials. Besides, the anti-fouling performance of the prepared composite is superior to that of the typical commercial pipe materials, e.g., Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polypropylene random (PPR), and Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), indicated by a dispensing industrial wastewater immersion experiment.

High-yield H2 production from HDPE through integrated pyrolysis and plasma-catalysis reforming process

Yan Ma,Ningbo Gao,Cui Quan,Anbang Sun,Martin Olazar

In order to deal with the ongoing rise in plastic trash and the decline in fossil energy, effective technologies for converting plastic to hydrogen are urgently needed. This work aims to explore the function of an emerging integrated pyrolysis and plasma-catalysis reforming system for hydrogen production from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The results showed that plasma and catalyst had strong synergy for hydrogen production under various reforming temperatures, with a synergy effect of 250.98 % at 500 °C. The yields of total gas and hydrogen gas from the plasma-catalysis reforming of HDPE were 146.50 mmol/g and 102.52 mmol/g, respectively, which were more than three times the sum of the gas yields from the plasma-alone reforming process and the catalysis-alone reforming process. Characterization of used catalysts at 500 °C revealed that catalysts from plasma-catalysis reforming had more severe carbon deposition than those from catalysis reforming, because of the long whisker-like deposited carbon in plasma-catalysis mode that kept the surface Ni species exposed and therefore maintained improved stability and activity.

Effect of Nano-SiO2 on Different Stages of UHMWPE/HDPE Fiber Preparation via Melt Spinning

Qun Yang,Run Zhang,Mingfei Liu,Ping Xue,Lichao Liu

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blend with lower viscosity is more suitable for melt spinning compared to pure UHMWPE; however, the mechanical property of the blend fiber is hard to dramatically improve (the maximum tensile strength of 998.27 MPa). Herein, different content modified-nano-SiO2is incorporated to UHMWPE/HDPE blend fiber. After adding 0.5 wt% nano-SiO2, the tensile strength and initial modulus of UHMWPE/HDPE/nano-SiO2fiber are increased to 1211 MPa and 12.81 GPa, respectively, 21.57% and 43.32% higher than that of UHMWPE/HDPE fiber. Meanwhile, the influence of the nano-SiO2content on the performance for as-spun filament and fiber are emphatically analyzed. The crystallinity and molecular chain orientation of as-spun filament reduces with the addition of nano-SiO2. On the contrary, for fiber, the addition of nano-SiO2promoted the crystallinity, molecular chain orientation and grain refinement more obvious at a lower content. Furthermore, the possible action mechanism of nano-SiO2in the as-spun filament extrusion and fiber hot drawing stage is explained.
