The gas-liquid transport efficiency of porous transport layers (PTLs) in proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMECs) critically influences overall electrolysis performance. Wettability optimization enhances gas-liquid dynamics, and templated modification techniques are used to regulate hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of PTL, improving gas-liquid distribution and transport pathways. This study investigates the influences of modifier composition and template patterns on the gas-liquid transport behavior electrolytic efficiency of PEMECs. Results showed that compared to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based systems, a methyltrimethylsilane (MTMS)/hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) composite formed superhydrophobic coating (contact angle θ = 150.3°) on titanium substrates, demonstrating superior interfacial stability and anti-wetting properties. Furthermore, by changing the wettability modification strategy, the effects of hydrophilic region proportions (10 %, 20 %, 30 %) and geometries on electrochemical performance were evaluated. It was shown that the 10 % hydrophobic sample achieved optimal results, with a minimum electrochemical resistance ( R ohm ) of 0.20497 Ω cm 2 at 1.7 V and 0.5 A/cm 2 . Additional experiments on hydrophobic region geometry revealed that circular designs enhance gas-liquid mass transfer by accelerating bubble detachment. These findings advance PTL optimization strategies and offer practical insights for improving PEMEC efficiency and scalability.

While nanofluids act as highly efficient heat transfer media, insufficient stability restricts their practical use in specific thermal management scenarios. In this study, hexadecyl trimethoxy silane (HDTMS) was used as a surface modifier. It was chemically grafted onto nano-Al₂O₃ particles, producing HDTMS-functionalized Al₂O₃ particles and the corresponding oil-based immersion composite nanofluids. The influence of HDTMS on the suspension stability of oil-based nanofluids was systematically evaluated, along with a comprehensive analysis of their thermophysical properties. Furthermore, the binding mechanisms between nanoparticles and mineral oil, both pre- and post-modification, were elucidated at the microscopic level via molecular dynamics simulations. Results indicated that HDTMS modification successfully introduced long carbon chains onto the nanoparticle surfaces, imparting enhanced lipophilicity. The 0.4 wt% modified nanofluids (HT-O) maintained a transmittance of 59.89% after 30 days of static settling. At the microscopic scale, the interaction energy between HDTMS-Al₂O₃ and mineral oil EC-160 increased by 51.92% at 343 K, and the secondary peak in the radial distribution function markedly decreased to 26.27 with stabilized fluctuations, indicating that the grafted layer effectively suppressed particle aggregation and promoted dispersion uniformity through steric hindrance. This study first applied modified alumina nanofluids to the immersion thermal management of batteries, providing key technical insights for developing immersion cooling media that integrate high thermal conductivity, long-term stability, and electrical insulation for battery thermal management. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulation was employed to reveal the intrinsic molecular-level mechanism behind the enhanced stability of the nanofluids.

To enhance the anti-aging property of a superhydrophobic self-cleaning coating, rutile nano-TiO 2 was loaded onto the surface of sericite via wet grinding method to prepare sericite-rutile composite particles. Then, the composite was modified with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and sprayed onto the substrates surfaces to prepare sericite-rutile/HDTMS composite coatings with both UV shielding and superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties. The structure, properties, and mechanism of the coating were studied. The research showed that the micro-nanoscale hierarchical structure has been constructed by compositing sericite and rutile, which were the structure foundation of superhydrophobic coatings. The sericite-rutile composite was modified with HDTMS and sprayed onto the substrates forming a superhydrophobic self-cleaning coating. Water contact angles (WCAs) and slide angles (SAs) of the coating were 155.3° and 1.3°, respectively. The sericite-rutile/HDTMS coating exhibited good UV shielding and anti-aging properties. Its UV shielding rate was 93.53%, which was equivalent to that of pure rutile (94.27%). After UV irradiation for 80 h, the surface maintained superhydrophobicity, and the chromaticity of the coating surface did not change. The superhydrophobicity and low adhesion to water of the sericite-rutile/HDTMS coating are due to the micro-nano hierarchical structure of the sericite-rutile composite and the low surface energy of HDTMS. The UV shielding effect of the coating is mainly due to the strong absorption of UV light by the sericite-rutile composite. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly method for constructing a coating with UV shielding and superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties.

Undesired ice/frost formation and accretion often occur on food freezing facility surfaces, lowering freezing efficiency. In the current study, two slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were fabricated by spraying hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and stearic acid (SA)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) suspensions, separately onto aluminum (Al) substrates coated with epoxy resin to obtain two superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS), and then infusing food-safe silicone and camellia seed oils into the SHS, respectively, achieving anti-frosting/icing performance. In comparison with bare Al, SLIPS not only exhibited excellent frost resistance and defrost properties but also showed ice adhesion strength much lower than that of SHS. In addition, pork and potato were frozen on SLIPS, showing an extremely low adhesion strength of <10 kPa, and after 10 icing/deicing cycles, the final ice adhesion strength of 29.07 kPa was still much lower than that of SHS (112.13 kPa). Therefore, the SLIPS showed great potential for developing into robust anti-icing/frosting materials for the freezing industry.

Tungsten (W) incorporated mobil-type eleven (MEL) zeolite membrane (referred to as W-MEL membrane) with high separation performance was firstly explored for the separation of oil/water mixtures under the influence of gravity. W-MEL membranes were grown on stainless steel (SS) meshes through in-situ hydrothermal growth method facilitated with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) modification of stainless steel meshes, which promote the heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth of W-MEL zeolites onto the mesh surface. W-MEL membranes were grown on different mesh size supports to investigate the effect of mesh size on the separation performance of the membrane. The as-synthesized W-MEL membrane supported on 500 mesh (25 μm) (W-MEL-500) exhibit the hydrophilic nature with a water contact angle of 11.8˚ and delivers the best hexane/water mixture separation with a water flux and separation efficiency of 46247 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 99.5%, respectively. The wettability of W-MEL membranes was manipulated from hydrophilic to hydrophobic nature by chemically modifying with the fluorine-free compounds (hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DDTMS)) to achieve efficient oil-permselective separation of heavy oils from water. Among the hydrophobically modified W-MEL membranes, W-MEL-500-HDTMS having a water contact angle of 146.4˚ delivers the best separation performance for dichloromethane/water mixtures with a constant oil flux and separation efficiency of 61490 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 99.2%, respectively along with the stability tested up to 20 cycles. Both W-MEL-500-HDTMS and W-MEL-500-DDTMS membranes also exhibit similar separation performances for the separation of heavy oil from sea water along with a 20-fold lower corrosion rate in comparison with the bare stainless-steel mesh, indicating their excellent stability in seawater. Compared to the reported zeolite membranes for oil/water separation, the as-synthesized and hydrophobically modified W-MEL membranes shows competitive separation performances in terms of flux and separation efficiency, demonstrating the good potentiality for oil/water separation.
