HOF-Enabled Synthesis of Porous PEDOT as an Improved Electrode Material for Supercapacitor

Zihan Zhong,Qingqing Shao,Baoxin Ni,Dazhi Wang,Zixi Xie,Libang Xu,Yakui Mu,Qisen Wang,Tan Wang,Yiwen Feng,Jingwei Hou,Kun Jiang,Anthony K. Cheetham,Tiesheng Wang

Controlling the nanostructure of conducting polymers (CPs) is essential for enhancing their performance in energy storage applications. Existing CPs often suffer from low effective pseudocapacitance due to poor ion permeability. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) to synthesize porous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). We incorporated 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) into HOF-16 by leveraging the flexible hydrogen-bonding interactions. Following the polymerization of EDOT, the HOF-16 was removed to form a porous interconnected network of PEDOT. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrated that the porous PEDOT exhibited significantly enhanced performance, including high specific capacitance, excellent rate capability, and ∼95% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. Compared to PEDOT prepared without HOF, the porous PEDOT showed a 34% increase in specific capacitance and a 10% improvement in 10,000-cycle capacitance retention. This work highlights the potential of HOF-enabled synthesis in creating high performance conducting polymers, offering a new avenue to improve supercapacitor performance, particularly in capacitance and cycling stability.

Direct Z-scheme Bi-HOF/g-C3N4 heterojunction: construction and interfacial charge regulation

Zhiyuan Chen,Bingbing Shao,Chao Liang,Yiwen Zhang,Yunpu Zhai,Yonggang Liu

Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed. • Bi N/Bi O bonds enhanced interfacial charge transfer. • BHG-3 achieved 97.26% MB removal under visible light. • ·O 2 − and h + were identified as dominant active species. • BHG-3 showed good stability and broad pollutant applicability. To integrate the visible-light-harvesting capability of g-C 3 N 4 with the interfacial electron-transfer function of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), a Bi-HOF/g-C 3 N 4 (BHG) direct Z -scheme heterojunction was constructed via a facile hydrothermal assembly strategy. Structural and surface chemical characterizations confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction, where strong interfacial coupling was established through Bi–N/Bi–O coordination bonds and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic analyses revealed that the BHG heterojunction markedly promoted charge separation and migration, as evidenced by an enhanced photocurrent response, reduced interfacial charge-transfer resistance, and suppressed recombination of photogenerated carriers. The optimized BHG-3 composite exhibited excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity, achieving 97.26% removal of methylene blue (MB) within 40 min, with an apparent reaction rate constant 3.39 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, BHG-3 showed good cycling stability, favorable tolerance to selected coexisting inorganic anions and degradation capability toward several model organic contaminants. Radical trapping experiments and mechanistic analyses confirmed a direct Z -scheme charge-transfer pathway, in which electrons enriched on g-C 3 N 4 and holes retained on Bi-HOF synergistically participated in pollutant degradation. The possible photodegradation pathway of MB over BHG-3 was further proposed based on LC-MS analysis. This work provides insight into interfacial charge regulation in HOF-based photocatalysts and offers a feasible strategy for developing efficient visible-light-driven systems for organic pollutant degradation.

Marangoni-driven assembly of HOF-PDMS composite membranes with enhanced CO2/O2 separation performance

Guowei Chen,Yang He,Shen Xiang,Yiping Zhao,Li Chen

Oxygenation membranes for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems require ultrathin, defect-free selective layers that simultaneously deliver high gas permeability, selectivity, and operational stability. Herein, we report a Janus composite membrane featuring a dense polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) selective layer integrated with a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-TGU-307), designed to overcome filler aggregation and transport limitations commonly encountered in ultrathin mixed-matrix membranes. A Marangoni convection-driven assembly strategy induces strong in-plane flow at the gas–liquid-solid interface, enabling uniform dispersion and horizontal embedding of HOF crystallites within the PDMS matrix. Theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that Marangoni flow suppresses capillary-driven aggregation, while a stable PDMS-HOF interfacial network forms polar gas-transport pathways and promotes interfacial CO 2 enrichment. As a result, the optimized M3-HOF membrane exhibits a high single-gas CO 2 permeance of 1883 GPU and an ideal CO 2 /O 2 selectivity of 5.2, measured at 0.1 MPa and 25 °C, together with an oxygen transfer rate of 219.8 mL·min −1 ·m −2 . The Janus architecture further provides excellent interfacial stability, effectively preventing liquid penetration (LEP > 0.6 MPa). Auxiliary evaluations demonstrate reduced protein adsorption and favorable blood-contacting compatibility, supporting its potential for membrane oxygenators. This computation-guided, Marangoni-driven fabrication strategy offers a scalable route for constructing high-performance oxygenation membrane with controlled ultrathin selective layers.

High efficient HOF-21@SA/M-PAN membrane for accurately sieving water from alcohol

Guijuan Liu,Xiao Xiao,Jie Wang,Yao Liang,Zhenrong Zhou,Weixing Li

The development of ethanol dehydration membranes with superior separation performance and long-term stability is an essential objective for pervaporation. HOF-21 with pore size of 3.6 Å could make way for water transportation while rejecting ethanol molecules. Here, amine-modulated HOF-21 (HOF-21-a) was proposed to dope into the sodium alginate (SA) separation layer on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate for ethanol dehydration. Molecular simulation results confirmed the superior water permeance of the HOF-21-a membrane. To enhance the interfacial bonding strength, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and catechol (CT) were coated onto the PAN substrate and crosslinked to form a robust network between the top separation layer and the support layer. The novel HOF-21-a@SA/M-PAN membrane, incorporating a hydrogen-bonded organic framework, was designed for efficient ethanol dehydration. Experimental results demonstrated that the prepared composite membrane exhibited excellent separation performance at a PEI/CT mass ratio of 1:1 and a HOF-21-a loading of 1.0 wt%. Specifically, the permeate flux increased significantly from 606 g·m −2 ·h −1 to 2389 g·m −2 ·h −1 with the separation factor improved from 153 to 2267 at 75 °C. Additionally, the composite membrane demonstrated outstanding long-term stability. The newly developed membrane offers a promising solution for organic solvent dehydration.

Core-shell Au@HOF nanoradiosensitizers activate potent immunogenic cell death for enhanced radio–radiodynamic–immunotherapy

Wang Bo,Xiang Qingming,Luo Baiyi,Zhao Yu,Chen Junyang,Xie Yingling,Xu Yu,Tian Jian

Radiotherapy (RT) efficacy is constrained by inefficient radiation utilization and inadequate systemic immunity. Although nanoparticle-based radiosensitizers aim to enhance therapeutic outcomes, most existing systems lack effective integration of radiation enhancement, dynamic therapy, and systemic immune activation. Herein, we report Au@HOF, a core-shell nanoradiosensitizer synthesized via a facile one-pot strategy, comprising a gold core and a porphyrin-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) shell. This unique architecture enables synergistic radio-radiodynamic therapy (RT-RDT) and robust immunogenic cell death (ICD) activation. The gold core enhances radiosensitization through efficient X-ray absorption and secondary electron emission in RT, while concurrently acting as a scintillator to activate the porphyrinic HOF shell for potent singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation during RDT. The resulting RT-RDT synergy significantly amplifies reactive oxygen species production, intensifying oxidative stress to trigger potent ICD. This ICD cascade remodels the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, promoting T-cell infiltration and enhancing cancer immunotherapy. When combined with immune checkpoint blockade, Au@HOF elicits strong abscopal effects, suppressing both primary and metastatic tumors. Furthermore, Au@HOF serves as an effective contrast agent for computed tomography-guided tumor localization and radiation dose planning. Collectively, Au@HOF represents a precision nanoplatform that intelligently integrates enhanced RT-RDT with ICD-driven systemic antitumor immunity, providing a transformative strategy against advanced malignancies. In Situ Synthesized HOF Ion Rectification Membrane with Ultrahigh Permselectivity for Nanofluidic Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Huijie Wang,Yao Zhang,Jin Wang,Saijilahu,Hanjun Sun,Huajun Yang,Xing-Hua Xia,Chen Wang

The utilization of salt concentration gradients as a renewable energy source represents a pivotal solution to the energy crisis. However, it is a persistent challenge to fabricate high-performance ion permeable membranes with excellent ion permselectivity. In this work, hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) is in situ growth on anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) via chemical-binding and solution-processing strategy. The hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions forming the porous structure and the internal unprotonated carboxyl groups endow the HOF with superior cation selectivity and ion permeability. Furthermore, benefiting from the remarkable asymmetry of the prepared nanofluidic membrane arising from structure and charge of AAO and HOF, the HOF/AAO presents outstanding ion current rectification (ICR) characteristic, which can eliminate the ion concentration polarization (ICP) and power loss. Therefore, an impressive output power density with 500-fold NaCl gradient is achieved as 75.2 W m −2 using the as-prepared HOF/AAO, which is superior to most of reported membranes (7.0–40.0 W m −2 ). To show the critical role of HOF, 2D and 3D MOF with the same monomers are also synthesized, achieving decreased power densities of 36.2 and 58.3 W m −2 respectively. The present work provides a novel strategy to develop high-performance nanofluidic ICR membranes for osmotic energy harvesting.

Ratiometric Electrochemical Aptasensor Based on PtPd@HOF and Au@MXene for Ultrasensitive Detection of Perfluorooctanoic Acid

Bofei Zhang,Baozhong Zhang,Boxu Chen,Kunfeng Zhang,Yiming Wang,Hanyu Chen,Baoshan He

A ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor was developed for ultrasensitive PFOA detection. • Fc-PtPd@HOF-101 served as the sensing platform and Au@MXene as the signal label. • The sensor achieves an ultralow detection limit of 6.04 fg/mL with excellent linearity from 10 fg/mL to 10 ng/mL. • Fc and MB signals provided self-calibration, improving accuracy and reproducibility. • Validated in real samples: tap, landscape, and PTFE-cooked water from Zhengzhou. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), as the most representative perfluorinated compound, is a persistent organic pollutant with exceptional chemical stability and resistance to natural degradation. Traditional detection methods, which rely on sophisticated instrumentation, exhibit limited sensitivity and often struggle to meet the requirements for trace-level analysis. In this study, a ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor was developed based on a ferrocene and hydrogen-bonded organic framework co-modified gold electrode (Fc-PtPd@HOF-101) combined with an Au@MXene signal tag, achieving ultrasensitive PFOA detection in water. The sensor utilizes an Fc internal reference and MB response indicator, with DPV detection. Au@MXene/cDNA/MB probe was constructed. In the presence of target PFOA, the sensor forms a stable Apt-PFOA complex, triggering the displacement of complementary DNA and the subsequent release of the signal probe, leading to a decrease in MB signal. The large specific surface area of Au@MXene enables high loading of cDNA and MB, significantly amplifying the signal while Fc remains stable. A ratiometric aptasensor was established using the current ratio I MB /I Fc . Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a linear range of 10.0 fg mL -1 to 10.0 ng mL -1 and a low detection limit of 6.04 fg mL -1 , with outstanding selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. This study provides a novel technical approach for the rapid and sensitive detection of trace PFOA in environmental water samples. Fabrication of a flexible hydrogen-bonded organic framework based mixed matrix membrane for hydrogen separation

Wei Li,Yanhong Li,Jürgen Caro,Aisheng Huang

Hydrogen-bonded Organic Frameworks (HOFs), consisting of H-bonds and strong π-π interaction, are novel materials with ordered and flexible porous frameworks. With permanent porosity, HOFs are considered as a promising material for large-scale preparation of gas separation membranes owing to their superior stability. Herein, we report a novel HOF-based Mixed-Matrix Membrane (MMM) termed HOF-30@PI by blending HOF-30 crystals with PolyImide (PI) for hydrogen separation. The added amount of HOF-30 has a crucial effect on gas separation performance. A HOF-30@PI MMM with 10 wt% HOF-30 exhibits a high hydrogen permeability of 428.1 barrer and H 2 /CH 4 separation factor of 61.7. Owing to good compatibility and the proper pore size of HOF-30 with 4 Å, the HOF-30@PI MMM shows excellent stability and has no obvious separation performance degradation after a 240 h testing. Interestingly, HOF-30@PI MMM has a certain response on pressure because of its flexibility due to hydrogen bonds . Therefore, the usage of HOFs as porous fillers in MMM develops a novel way toward the tailored synthesis of advanced composite membrane materials for gas separation.

Fabrication of Novel MOF/HOF Composite for Efficient Degradation of Methylene Blue via Photo-Fenton-like Process

Yanfeng Zhang,Yong Huang,Han Leng,Xuwei Chen

The photo-Fenton process is an advanced oxidation method widely employed in environmental remediation. Herein, we developed a novel metal–organic framework@hydrogen-bonded organic framework (MOF/HOF) composite with excellent photo-Fenton-like activity for the efficient degradation of organic dye methylene blue (MB). Cu-based MOF (CuBTC) was firstly prepared via the solvothermal method, then melamine (MA) and trimesic acid (TMA)-based HOF (MA-TMA) was grown in situ on CuBTC with hydrogen bonding interactions to produce the MOF/HOF composite CuBTC-MA. The CuBTC-MA composite could catalyze H2O2to produce active substances for efficient MB degradation. The degradation rate constant of the CuBTC-MA composite was 4.4 times and 16.7 times higher than that of CuBTC and MA-TMA. The remarkably enhanced performance was attributed to the synergistic effect between the efficient separation of electron–holes supported by the type-II heterojunction structure of the CuBTC-MA composite and the Cu(I)/Cu(II) inter-conversion. The CuBTC-MA composite demonstrated exceptional repeatability and maintained a stable performance across a broad pH range. This study provided a novel paradigm for engineering heterogeneous MOF/HOF heterostructures, demonstrating significant potential in advancing photo-Fenton-like catalytic systems for the efficient environmental remediation of organic pollutants through synergistic charge separation and radical generation mechanisms.

Dual-role deep eutectic solvent engineering in HOF-101 supported molecularly imprinted polymers for enhanced myricetin adsorption

Zhenyu Wu,Zhiwei Ding,Yue Li,Shakeel Zeb,Weibai Bian,Yinhua Jiang,Yan Liu

The efficient capture of myricetin is often challenged by its instability in alkaline environments, which contradicts the alkaline conditions required for traditional boronate affinity materials. To address this, a dual-recognition molecularly imprinted polymer (DMIP) supported on HOF-101 was developed using a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-driven strategy. A dual DES system was employed to achieve synergistic recognition: ternary DES 1 acts as a functional monomer combining boronate affinity and hydrogen bonding, while binary DES 2 serves as a green solvent and porogen. Crucially, the ethylene glycol in DES 2 facilitates “teamed boronate affinity” via B–O coordination, significantly lowering the p K a of boronic acid groups. This mechanism enables efficient specific recognition at pH 6.0, effectively overcoming the limitation of decreased affinity under weakly acidic conditions. The optimized BA-DES/DMIPs exhibited rapid equilibrium (20 min), a high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (45.016 mg/g), and excellent stability over five cycles. Furthermore, the material demonstrated superior selectivity against structural analogs and achieved satisfactory recovery rates (99.80%–101.67%) in grape juice, confirming its potential for green and efficient separation in complex matrices.

Ultrafast charge transfer in TiO2/Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction for highly photocatalytic H2O2 production and sterilization

Yanyan Zhao,Jing Zhang,Xiaolong Li,Hailun Su,Lin Yang,Jianjun Zhang

A stable Py-HOF was prepared by employing H 4 TBAPy as precursor. • A TiO 2 /Py-HOF composite with excellent photocatalytic activity was constructed. • T/Py-HOF shows stability due to strong H-bonds and π–π interactions of H 4 TBAPy. • S-scheme charge transfer pathway was verified via ISI-XPS, fs-TAS, and DFT. • T/Py-HOF display good photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production yield and sterilization. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) hold substantial potential for application in photocatalysis. However, their practical application in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation and antibacterial activity remains hampered by intrinsically inefficient electron-hole separation and inadequate structural stability. Herein, a Py-HOF photocatalyst was prepared by employing 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid) pyrene (H 4 TBAPy) as precursor via self-assembly method, and the titanium dioxide/Hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TiO 2 /Py-HOF, T/Py-HOF) S-scheme heterojunction was rationally fabricated via an in-situ synthesis. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions of H 4 TBAPy, the T/Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction displays super stability. Furthermore, in-situ irradiated XPS, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and DFT calculations verify the S-scheme carrier migration mechanism within the T/Py-HOF heterojunction. Thanks to the ultrafast charge-transfer and excellent redox ability of the T/Py-HOF S-scheme photocatalyst, the optimally formulated T/Py-HOF-5% achieves a remarkable H 2 O 2 production rate of 1890 μmol g −1 h −1 , corresponding to approximately 15.24 and 6.19-fold enhancements compare to the pure TiO 2 and bare Py-HOF, respectively, along with excellent stability. Furthermore, the T/Py-HOF heterojunction also exhibits superior photocatalytic sterilization activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) , achieving almost 100% of E. coli inactivation after 90 min light irradiation. Collectively, this work offers a novel insight for designing high-efficiency HOF-based S-scheme photocatalysts in energy and environment applications. A novel TiO 2 /Py-HOF S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated for efficient photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production and excellent photocatalytic E. coli sterilization.
