Study on the effect of modified magnetic nanoparticles Co3O4@HPAM monomer ratio on viscosity reduction of thick oil emulsification

Nana Sun,Hongmei Dong,Jian Liu,Jianbo Hu

To improve the dispersibility and emulsification performance of magnetic nanoparticles, this study first synthesized three modified magnetic nanoparticles (Co 3 O 4 @HPAM) with different monomer ratios and characterized their physical properties. On this basis, the effects of the modified magnetic nanoparticles with different monomer ratios on the emulsification and viscosity reduction of thick oil were investigated by stability and rheology; finally, the emulsification and viscosity reduction mechanism was revealed by combining the zeta potential, surface tension, contact angle, and oil droplet distribution. The results showed that Co 3 O 4 @HPAM with three different monomer ratios was successfully synthesized and exhibited good dispersibility. With the increase of monomer ratio, the emulsion water fraction decreased first and then increased, and the viscosity reduction decreased first and then increased. At a mass fraction of 0.04%, the sample with a 15% monomer ratio exhibited the lowest water separation rate (6.45% at 4 h) and the highest viscosity reduction rate (97.93%). This phenomenon occurs because, at a 15% monomer ratio, the modified magnetic nanoparticles have a higher negative charge, a larger contact angle, lower oil-water interfacial tension, and smaller, more uniformly distributed oil droplets. This study offers a theoretical foundation for using magnetic nanoparticles in heavy oil emulsification to reduce viscosity.

Experimental Study on SiO2 Nanoparticles-Assisted Alpha-Olefin Sulfonate Sodium (AOS) and Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide (HPAM) Synergistically Enhanced Oil Recovery

Jiani Hu,Meilong Fu,Yuxia Zhou,Fei Wu,Minxuan Li

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of SiO2nanoparticles in assisting with surfactants and polymers for tertiary oil recovery, with the aim of enhancing oil recovery. The article characterizes the performance of SiO2nanoparticles, including particle size, dispersion stability, and zeta potential, evaluates the synergistic effects of nanoparticles with alpha-olefin sulfonate sodium (AOS) surfactants and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) on reducing interfacial tension and altering wettability, and conducts core flooding experiments in rock cores with varying permeabilities. The findings demonstrate that the particle size decreased from 191 nm to 125 nm upon the addition of SiO2nanoparticles to AOS surfactant, but increased to 389 nm upon the addition of SiO2nanoparticles to HPAM. The dispersibility experiment showed that the SiO2nanoparticle solution did not precipitate over 10 days. After adding 0.05% SiO2nanoparticles to AOS surfactant, the zeta potential was −40.2 mV, while adding 0.05% SiO2nanoparticles to 0.1% HPAM resulted in a decrease in the zeta potential to −25.03. The addition of SiO2nanoparticles to AOS surfactant further reduced the IFT value to 0.19 mN/m, altering the rock wettability from oil-wet to strongly water-wet, with the contact angle decreasing from 110° to 18°. In low-permeability rock core oil displacement experiments, the use of AOS surfactants and HPAM for enhanced oil recovery increased the recovery rate by 24.5% over water flooding. The recovery rate increased by 21.6% over water flooding in low-permeability rock core experiments after SiO2nanoparticles were added and surfactants and polymers were utilized for oil displacement. This is because the nanoparticles blocked small pore throats, resulting in increased resistance and hindered free fluid flow. The main causes of this plugging are mutual interference and mechanical entrapment, which cause the pressure differential to rise quickly. In high-permeability rock core oil displacement experiments, the use of AOS surfactants and HPAM for oil recovery increased the recovery rate by 34.6% over water flooding. Additionally, the recovery rate increased by 39.4% over water flooding with the addition of SiO2nanoparticles and the use of AOS surfactants and HPAM for oil displacement. Because SiO2nanoparticles create wedge-shaped structures inside highly permeable rock cores, they create structural separation pressure, which drives crude oil forward and aids in diffusion. This results in a comparatively small increase in pressure differential. Simultaneously, the nanoparticles change the rock surfaces’ wettability, which lowers the amount of crude oil that adsorbs and improves oil recovery.Keywords:SiO2nanoparticles;enhanced oil recovery;performance characterization;oil displacement experiment

The principle and effect of transfer agent for the removal of PCE during in situ chemical oxidation

Liu Yunsong,Chen Jiajun,Wang Qingwei,Shi Lanxiang,Shi Yandan

Viscosity remedial technology, which uses a water-soluble polymer mixed with remedial fluids, has been introduced in recent years to improve the removal efficacy of perchloroethylene/tetrachloroethylene (PCE) by improving oxidant coverage (i.e. sweep efficiency). Xanthan gum and hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) are relatively stable with time and temperature and possess salt and oxidation resistance, indicating that they may be good flooding agents (the former is better than the latter in this work). In this work, we quantified the polymer directly improved oxidation of PCE during transport by using a two-dimensional flow tank. Using a low pore volume (≤3.0), the removal rate of the PCE increased with the polymer concentration before stabilizing at approximately 93.00 and 88.30% for xanthan and HPAM, respectively. In this work, over 80% of PCE was removed via less than 3.0 PV of the SDS solution, whereas complete removal (100%) was achieved with less than 3.0 PV of SDS foam. Furthermore, the new experimental discoveries demonstrate that xanthan is better than HPAM and SDS foam is a better remediation agent than the SDS solution for removing PCE. Trimeric Cationic Surfactant Coacervation as a Versatile Approach for Removing Organic Pollutants

Bin Liu,Weiwei Zhao,Yutan Shen,Yaxun Fan,Yilin Wang

A versatile method to remove a broad spectrum of dye pollutants from wastewater rapidly and efficiently is highly desirable. Here, we report that the complex coacervation of cationic trimeric imine-based surfactants (TISn) with negatively charged hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) can be used for this purpose. The coacervation occurs in a wide concentration and composition range and requires the HPAM and TISn concentrations as low as 0.1 g/L and 0.1 mM, respectively. Dye effluents treated by trimeric surfactants and HPAM complete phase separation within 30 s under turbulent conditions, which generates an exceedingly small volume fraction (0.4%) of viscoelastic coacervate and a clear supernatant with a dye removal efficiency of up to 99.9% for anionic and neutral dyes in dosages of up to 120 mg/L. Crowded molecular arrangement and thick framework in coacervate are responsible for the rapid phase separation rate and low volume fraction. The trimeric imine surfactant/polymer coacervation provides a simple, effective, and sustainable approach for the rapid removal of dyes and other organic pollutants.

Mechanism of weighting salts effect on high-density polyacrylamide hydrogels for hydraulic fracturing performance

Xiaoqin Cao,Shiyuan Wang,Runxi Wang,Zhenghua Sun,Yujun Feng,Hongyao Yin

Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) hydrogels are widely used as fracturing fluids for extracting underground hydrocarbon resources. Weighting salts are incorporated to enhance hydrogel density to address the extreme pressure encountered in ultra-deep reservoirs. These salts exert significant effects on performance; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, and the development of high-performance fracturing fluids remains a significant challenge. This study systematically examines the influence of potassium formate (HCOOK) and sodium bromide (NaBr) as weighting agents on the viscoelasticity of high-density HPAM hydrogels. The findings indicate that HCOOK exerts a more pronounced adverse impact on the viscoelasticity of HPAM hydrogels compared to NaBr. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the inferior viscoelasticity of the HCOOK-based polymer hydrogels is attributed to stronger supramolecular interactions between the crosslinker and HCOOK. This study develops an enhanced-performance high-density fracturing fluid with a density of up to 1.40 g/cm 3 , a maximum drag reduction rate of 75.1 %, and temperature tolerance up to 160 °C by integrating ultra-high molecular weight HPAM, a dual crosslinking strategy, and NaBr as weighting salt. This research not only provides fundamental insights into the complex interactions among weighting agents, crosslinkers, and polymers but also presents an enhanced-performance high-density fracturing fluid for ultra-deep hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Potential application of novel Janus amphiphilic nanoparticles to improve the viscoelasticity of polymer solution for enhanced oil recovery

Guopeng Wu,Wei Lang,Xing Li,Zhaowei Hou,Xin Zhao,Zihao Tian,Jinyong Song,Han Jia

Nanomaterials were widely employed to improve the physicochemical properties of various chemicals in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In the present study, the novel Janus amphiphilic silica nanoparticle (JNS) was successfully prepared, whose structure and property were confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Zeta potential measurement, transmission electron microscopy, interfacial tension and contact angle measurements. Then the effects of JNS, hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (HLS) and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (HBS) on the viscosity of the hydrophobic modified HPAM (HOA101) solution were studied. It was found that JNS exhibited a greater ability to enhance the viscosity, temperature resistance and salt resistance of HOA101 solution in comparison to the other two polymer nanofluids. The interaction mechanisms between nanoparticles and HOA101 were proposed, which were verified by the viscoelasticity measurements and control experiments. Core flooding experiments and micromodel flooding tests demonstrated that the JNS/HOA101 dispersion could effectively expand the sweep efficiency to highly increase the oil recovery from 8.4% to 14.3%.

Tough, self-healing double network hydrogels crosslinked via multiple dynamic non-covalent bonds for strain sensor

Guohui Huang,Pei Wang,Yutian Cai,Kun Jiang,Huimin Li

Double-network hydrogels have outstanding mechanical characteristics but mostly suffer from poor self-healing performance since most hydrogels are chemically crosslinked via covalent links for each network. In this work, a tough and self-healing double network hydrogel with multiple dynamic non-covalent bonds is developed by combining the hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide (HPAM) with a thermally reversible potassium ion crosslinked κ -carrageenan (K + C) network through a dual physical crosslinked network strategy. Being the multiple dynamic non-covalent bond interactions and dual physical crosslink networks, the K + C/HPAM DN hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical characteristics (tensile strength: 1.86 MPa, tensile strain: 1637%) and good self-healing ability (maximum stress self-healing efficiency: 87%, maximum tensile strength after self-healing: 0.95 MPa). Due to the three-dimensional pore structure and the conductive ions in the system, the K + C/HPAM DN hydrogel also achieves good strain sensing capabilities with a strain sensitivity of 2.98 (gauge factor, GF) in the 100% strain range. Even after being cut and self-healed, the gel still exhibits good strain sensing capabilities (GF = 2.79), which is still better than the most similar DN hydrogel strain sensors in sensitivity. We believe this work offers a new material for self-healing flexible strain sensors. Graphical
