PDMS-CNTs composite-based TENGs exhibit promising potential in mechanical energy harvesting due to their flexibility and processing versatility; however, the inherent limitations of PDMS and poor dispersion of CNTs severely restrict their performance. Despite various modification strategies, existing approaches often compromise material properties, making it crucial to develop effective solutions for high-performance TENG devices. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach to fabricate high-performance TENGs based on porous polydimethylsiloxane/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/hydroxypropyl cellulose (PDMS-MWCNTs/HPC) composites through a unique "sponge pump absorption" method. Using HPC as a molecular bridge enables stable MWCNTs dispersion and uniform deposition within porous PDMS framework. The resultant composite foam exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience with 99 % recovery after 60 % compression and enhanced electrical output, achieving peak voltage and current of 149.09 V and 262.72 nA at 87 % porosity under 40 N force. The hierarchical porous structure, formed by unfiltered NaCl templates, significantly enhances surface charge density and charge transfer efficiency, while maintaining essential dielectric properties through HPC incorporation. The device demonstrates reliable performance in powering LEDs and exhibits distinct electrical responses to various mechanical deformations including stretching, twisting, and bending. This strategy presents an effective approach for fabricating high-performance TENG devices with great potential in self-powered sensing and sustainable energy harvesting applications.

Novel environmental friendly hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels were fabricated upon compositing with graphene oxide (GO) in this work. In order to promote a more homogeneous dispersion of GO sheets in HPC, GO was firstly modified with HPC chains through esterification. The morphology and chemical structure of the functionalized HPC-GO were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Then scanning electronic microscope was employed to compare the morphologies of the HPC and HPC-GO/HPC hydrogels. The obtained HPC-GO/HPC hydrogels exhibited excellent adsorption performance toward methylene blue. Simulation of the practical use by preparing simple adsorption columns made from in situ formation of HPC-based hydrogels had given a visible observation of the significant adsorption effect brought by the incorporation of HPC-GO sheets. Adsorption kinetics were then imitated by Lagergren pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. Adsorption isotherms were imitated by Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm.

The imperative quest for renewable energy sources and advanced energy storage technologies has arisen amidst the escalating perils of climate change and dwindling fossil fuel reserves. In the realm of energy storage technologies, asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) has garnered significant attention owing to its high energy density and power density. In the quest for advanced electrode materials for ASC, the integration of 2D layered heterostructures on hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) substrates has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the electrochemical performance. Herein, a highly innovative hierarchical NiCo LDH/MoS 2 /HPC heterostructure was successfully synthesized using a simple two-step hydrothermal method for the electrode materials of ASC. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical heterostructure of NiCo LDH/MoS 2 /HPC composite and the synergistic effect between the components, it reveals an exceptional specific capacitance of 2368 F/g at 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode system, which significantly exceeds that of conventional supercapacitor electrodes. Additionally, the ASC device of NiCo LDH/MoS 2 /HPC//HPC achieves remarkable specific capacitance of 236 F/g at 0.5 A/g and an impressive energy density of 84 Wh/kg at a power density of 400 W/kg, as well as superior cyclic stability. This study not only demonstrates the effectiveness of incorporating MoS 2 and NiCo LDH into a carbon-based framework for supercapacitor applications but also opens avenues for designing more efficient energy storage devices.

Thermochromic hydrogels have attracted considerable interest for their potential use in smart windows and information encryption. Nonetheless, it remains a challenge to achieve flexible and adjustable multilevel phase transitions through simple strategies. In this study, a thermoresponsive composite hydrogel with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was developed by introducing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) into a cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) network via a one-pot synthesis approach. CMC not only changed the phase transition temperature, but also greatly improved the mechanical properties, anti-freezing and dimensional stability of the hydrogel. The hydrogel smart window exhibited excellent sunlight modulation capabilities and effective infrared shielding effects (T lum ≈ 90.24 %,ΔT solar,25–2°C = 66.88 %,ΔT solar,25–40°C = 80.81 %), which could simultaneously meet the needs of indoor lighting and energy saving during the daytime, as well as the need for privacy at night. Furthermore, multiple encryption of QR code information and temperature monitoring were realized by combining the hydrogels with different phase transition temperatures. This strategy provides an innovative route to fabricate thermochromic cellulose hydrogels and expands their application in the field of smart materials.

A comprehensive understanding of both redox reactions and electrical double layer capacitance is crucial in the development of electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies. Herein, a 3D hierarchically porous carbon modified electrode is investigated by both experimental and theoretical cyclic voltammetry based on finite element modeling. An electrochemical reaction rate constant of 1.06 × 10−4 m s−1 is initially obtained based on the proposed model via the reversibility analysis on cyclic voltammograms. Then the redox reaction of ferrocyanide on an FeN hierarchically porous carbon (FeN-HPC) modified electrode is carried out with this rate constant. A comparison of voltammetric waveforms indicates that the redox behavior of ferrocyanide is independent of the electrical double layer capacitance which stemmed from the porous structure and morphology of FeN-HPC. Correspondingly, a specific capacitance of 68.80 F g−1 is obtained with a mass loading of 4 μg on the substrate. Moreover, a comparison of simulated ferrocyanide and ferricyanide concentrations against both applied potential and the distance to the electrode surface further verifies the independence of the redox reaction from the electrochemical capacitance. In summary, this study facilitates the understanding of the redox reaction on a 3D hierarchically porous carbon modified electrode, which is important in the development of energy-related electrode fabrication.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been demonstrated to be one of the most promising technologies in the field of renewable energy. However, the presence of the defects in the perovskite films greatly limits the efficiency and the stability of the PSCs. The additive engineering is one of the most effective approaches to overcome this problem. Most of the successful additives are extracted from the petroleum-based materials, while the research on the biomass-based additives is still lagging behind. In this paper, two ecofriendly hydroxyalkyl cellulose additives, i.e., hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and hydroxylpropyl cellulose (HPC), are investigated on the performance of the MAPbI 3 -based inverted PSCs. Due to the strong interaction between the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose and the divalent cations of the perovskite, these additives enhance the crystal grain orientation and significantly repair the defects of the perovskite films. Working as the additives, these two cellulose derivatives show a strong passivation ability, which significantly reduces the trap density and improves the optoelectronic feature of the PSCs. Compared with the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the control device (19.19%), an enhancement of ~10% is achieved after the addition of HEC. The optimized device (PCE = 21.25%) with a long-term stability (10:80 h, PCE = 20.93%) is achieved by the incorporation of the HEC additives into the precursor solution. It is the best performance among the PSCs with the cellulose additives up to now. This research provides a novel choice to develop a cost-effective and renewable additive for the PSCs with high efficiency and excellent long-term stability.
