Carbon-based hole transport layer (HTL)-free all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) exhibit advantages of simplified preparation procedure, high stability, and low cost, showcasing significant application potential. Nonetheless, the development of C-PSCs requires overcoming challenges such as the misalignment of energy levels between carbon counter electrode and the CsPbBr₃ perovskite, abundant defects at the perovskite/carbon back interface, and the carbon counter electrode's low conductivity. Herein, VS₄ and VO-deposited carbon nanofibers (CNF), termed VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF respectively, have been synthesized to adjust the work function and improve the conductivity of the carbon counter electrode. CsPbBr₃-based C-PSCs employing VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF as counter electrodes yield power conversion efficiencies of 7.88 % and 8.80 %, indicating great PCE enhancements of 15.4 % and 28.8 % as compared with the device with unmodified CNF counter electrodes. This improvement is attributed to the optimized conductivity and adjusted work function of the counter electrodes, which can optimize the energy level alignment, thereby enhancing charge carrier extraction and transport while effectively inhibiting recombination. Furthermore, VS₄@CNF and VO@CNF demonstrate a notable passivation effect on defects at the back interface. This study offers a valuable path for the design of novel carbon counter electrodes and the modification of the back interface in carbon-based all-inorganic C-PSCs.

This work proposed a novel strategy utilizing ethoxycarbonyl triphenylphosphonium bromide (ECM-TTPBr) as a copassivator, which significantly improves the solubility of [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid (PCBA) in chlorobenzene solution to enable uniform coverage of PCBA on the TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL). The dual-molecule copassivation effect optimizes the interface between the ETL and perovskite layer by reducing interface defects and enhancing ETL conductivity to improve charge extraction and transport efficiency at the interface, while effectively decreasing residual lead iodide clusters at the perovskite film’s bottom interface to smooth the interface and significantly improve physical contact between the perovskite layer and ETL. Owing to this dual interface passivation, the device achieves a photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 19.15% with notably enhanced stability, offering a technically feasible pathway with industrialization potential for developing high-efficiency and stable hole transport layer-free carbon-based perovskite solar cells.

Municipal sludge (MS) and derived HTL (hydrothermal liquefaction) bio-crude contains a large quantity of organics, including fatty acids, which may be a potential resource for producing biofuels via catalytic treatment. Herein, decarboxylation of fatty acids is chosen as the model reaction to screen a series of nickel-based bimetallic catalysts supported on homemade SiO 2 nanospheres to investigate the synergetic effect. NiCo/SiO 2 turned out with the best performance compared to NiCu-, NiZn-, NiMo- and NiFe/SiO 2 . An 83% conversion of stearic acid and an 84% selectivity of heptadecane via hydrothermal decarboxylation were achieved at 280 °C under 1 MPa H 2 . XPS results revealed the electron transfer from Co to Ni, leading to the formation of Ni δ- , which is more accessible to bond with C δ+ in the carboxyl group of fatty acids, thus facilitating the decarboxylation reaction. Compared to commercial SiO 2 , our homemade SiO 2 showed a stronger carbon accumulation resistance, indicating a medium specific surface area was essential. Both the synergetic effect of NiCo bimetal and the carbon accumulation resistance of homemade SiO 2 nanospheres contributed to the efficient hydrothermal decarboxylation. The NiCo/SiO 2 catalyst was further applied for upgrading of MS HTL bio-crude to biofuels, and the theoretical higher heating value (HHV) was significantly improved from 34.4 to 37.2 MJ/kg, suggesting the potential application of converting MS bio-crude to biofuels.

Carbon materials are potential counter electrodes for all−inorganic hole transport layer (HTL)−free perovskite solar cells (PSCs), whereas the defects of the perovskite/carbon back interface are the dominant reason for the low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of this kind of device. To resolve this problem, carbon nanofiber (CNF) was first synthesized using electrospinning technique to construct a carbon counter electrode with porous network architecture by self−supporting nature of CNF. The CsPbBr 3 based all−inorganic HTL−free PSCs using the porous CNF counter electrode shows a PCE of 5.01%. To further modify the CsPbBr 3 /carbon back interface and energy level alignment, mesoporous CNF (m−CNF) and B doped m−CNF (m−BCNF) are synthesized, which can improve the conductivity of the carbon counter electrodes as well as decline the trap state densities and accelerate the carrier extraction and transport properties of the back interface. Accordingly, the all inorganic HTL−free PSCs using m−CNF and m−BCNF counter electrodes generate high PCE of 7.48% and 8.38%, with outstanding long−tern stability. The enhanced PCE improvements can be ascribe to strategies of construction of multilevel network and B doping which can modify the CsPbBr 3 /carbon back interface, optimize the energy level alignment of the device, and enhance the conductivity of the carbon counter electrode. This research is expected to provide meaningful support for development of new counter electrode materials and back interface engineering for high-performance all inorganic HTL−free PSCs.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used as a hole transport layer (HTL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) because of its excellent hole transport capability and simple preparation process. According to theoretical studies, a thinner PEDOT:PSS HTL allows more incident light to enter the perovskite layer. However, the PEDOT:PSS HTL prepared by the traditional deposition process has some limitations, such as the thick HTL, abundant defects at the PEDOT:PSS/perovskite interface, etc. Is there a preparation process that can achieve the thinning and modification of the PEDOT:PSS HTL in one-step process at the same time? In this work, inspired by the semiconductor etching process, an eco-friendly solvent etching technique is applied during the spin-coating process to fabricate an ultrathin PEDOT:PSS HTL and simultaneously introduce a green passivator (polyethylene glycol, PEG) as the bridge molecule on the HTL upper surface. In this process, the green PEG aqueous etchant can etch the excess bulk PEDOT:PSS away to form an ultrathin PEDOT:PSS HTL with PEG molecules and rich PEDOT domains remained on its surface (PEG-PEDOT:PSS HTL). This well-designed HTL is successfully thinned to enhance its light transmission and can be better matched with the Sn–Pb perovskite layer. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of Sn–Pb PSCs using the PEG-PEDOT:PSS HTL is improved from 20.52% of the reference to 21.58%, and the stability of Sn–Pb PSCs is dramatically enhanced as well.
