Differentiated Oxygen Evolution Behavior in MOF-Derived Oxide Nanomaterials Induced by Phase Transition

Li Zhong,Xian Wang,Yuanyuan Guo,Junyang Ding,Qi Huang,Ting-Ting Li,Yue Hu,Jinjie Qian,Shaoming Huang

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode has become one of the most widely studied electrochemical processes, which poses an important role in several energy generation technologies. In this work, we have designed and synthesized a series of metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived oxides pyrolyzed at different temperatures for efficient water oxidation in alkaline solutions. First, the barrel-shaped BMM-10 microcrystals can be conveniently synthesized under solvothermal conditions, and the hollow morphology of BMM-10-Fe with low crystallinity can be obtained through the fierce hydrolysis of Fe(III) ions. After being oxidized in air, there are only two typical phases of oxides including BMM-10-Fe-L and BMM-10-Fe-H. During electrolysis, BMM-10-Fe-L turns out to be immediately degraded into active Ni/FeOOH nanosheets with improved OER performance, while there is almost no structural and morphological change in BMM-10-Fe-H due to the structural rigidity and robust stability. Furthermore, the optimal BMM-10-Fe-H exhibits a promising electrocatalytic OER performance with a low Tafel slope of 137.4 mV dec–1, a small overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm–2, and a high current retention of 93.8% after the stability test. The present work would motivate the scientific community to construct various MOF-derived nanomaterials for efficient energy storage and conversion applications.

Cerium-Mediated Redox Chemistry in MOF Coatings Enables Ultrastable Aqueous Zn Metal Batteries

Junyu Jiang,Jichang Sun,Liansheng Li,Kewei Hu,Pengyu Meng,Tianqi Yang,Wen-Jie Jiang,Qinghua Liang

Constructing artificial coatings on Zn metal anodes represents a promising approach to suppressing interfacial side reactions and enhancing reversibility for stable aqueous Zn metal batteries. Herein, Ce-mediated redox chemistry in Ce-UiO-66 MOF coating was explored to stabilize the aqueous Zn anode. We found that the Ce-UiO-66 coating facilitates multi-stage Zn 2+ desolvation due to its abundant carboxyl groups and an optimal porous structure. Moreover, the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox-induced, abundant vacancies provide numerous zincophilic sites for preferential Zn 2+ adsorption and transport. Crucially, the reversible Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox behavior enables significant homogenization of electron/Zn 2+ distributions while accelerating interfacial charge transfer kinetics during repeated Zn plating/stripping. Consequently, a Zn anode with an optimal ∼5 µm Ce-UiO-66 coating achieves exceptional stability, highlighted by an ultralong cycling life exceeding 6000 h at 2.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 , alongside an ultralow polarization voltage of ∼24 mV. High-rate stability over 2800 h is also maintained at 5.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 . This work underscores the great potential of redox-active coatings, specifically leveraging Ce-mediated redox chemistry, to enable highly stable aqueous Zn metal batteries for practical applications.

Microenvironment-engineered Brønsted acidity in MOF-808 for efficient organophosphate hydrolysis and sensing

Yifei Chen,Mengxue Zhu,Zhengyi Chen,Yinjun Tang,Ruimin Li,Haifei Wan,Qie Fang,Wenhong Yang,Wenxuan Jiang,Miao Xu,Canglong Wang,Liuyong Hu,Chengzhou Zhu,Wenling Gu

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are representative phosphate ester substrates, whose efficient hydrolysis critically depends on cooperative Lewis and Brønsted acid catalysis as observed in natural hydrolases. However, most artificial catalysts primarily emphasize Lewis acidic metal centers while the regulatory role of Brønsted acidity in hydrolysis nanozymes has rarely been systematically investigated or mechanistically validated. Here, we report a hydroxyl-modified metal-organic framework nanozyme (MOF-808-OH), in which the catalytic microenvironment is engineered by introducing hydroxyl groups into the organic linkers of MOF-808 to enhance Brønsted acidity. As a result, MOF-808-OH exhibits a 1.9-fold increase in phosphate ester hydrolysis activity compared with pristine MOF-808. Combined experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal that strengthened Brønsted acid sites facilitate substrate activation and transition-state stabilization during P-O bond cleavage. Benefiting from this enhanced catalytic efficiency, MOF-808-OH enables reliable colorimetric quantification of p -nitrophenyl phosphate ( p -NPP) with a linear range of 5-1000 μg mL −1 and a limit of detection of 2.5 μg mL −1 . Furthermore, the hydrolyzed phosphate can be subsequently captured via Ca 2+ -induced precipitation, offering a feasible route for downstream phosphorus utilization. This work demonstrates the key role of Brønsted acidity in hydrolysis nanozymes, which differs from traditional studies that only focus on Lewis acid sites. The establishment of structure-activity relationship provides a new and transferable design principle for high-performance MOF-based hydrolytic nanozymes.

Tuning Electron Cloud Density in MOF Nanosheets for Enhanced Proton Conduction in PEMFCs

Dongxu Shen,Yarong Liu,Chongchong Chen,Zhirong Yang,Hao Li,Shanghao Xiao,Wenjia Wu,Jingtao Wang

Precise construction of proton transfer pathways and modulation of proton carrier microenvironments are crucial for achieving high proton conduction in proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Despite extensive efforts to tailor these microenvironments, the underlying regulation of electron cloud density around proton carriers, intrinsically linked to proton conduction, remains largely overlooked. Herein, MIL-53-SO 3 H-X (X = –F, –Br, –H, –CH 3 ) nanosheets are synthesized via solvothermal coordination of Cr 3+ ions with functionalized terephthalic acid (BDC-X) ligands, followed by post-synthetic sulfonation at unsaturated Cr 3+ sites to anchor –SO 3 H groups. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that electron-withdrawing –F groups enhance the electron cloud density around –SO 3 H sites, shortening transfer distance, aligning water molecules, and lowering the proton transfer barrier. Conversely, electron-donating –CH 3 groups deplete the electron cloud density in the –SO 3 H region, disrupting proton transport pathways. The MIL-53-SO 3 H-F nanosheet achieves an intrinsic proton conductivity of 298.3 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, a 4.5-fold increase over MIL-53-SO 3 H-CH 3 nanosheets (65.5 mS cm −1 ), as measured by the comb electrode. The corresponding lamellar membrane delivers a high peak power density of 734.8 mW cm −2 and remains stable for over 100 h in H 2 /O 2 PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Amino-Directed CuPd Dispersion in MOF Coatings for Enhanced Hydrogen Trapping and Embrittlement Resistance

Xinheng Lyu,Yuanshuang Liu,Duoyuan Chen,Dingrong Qu,Zhuo Jiang

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) remains a critical challenge in structural metals due to hydrogen ingress and accumulation within the lattice. Herein, we report a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based coating strategy to mitigate HE by incorporating CuPd nanoparticles into amino-functionalized UiO-66-NH2. The amino groups direct the spatial distribution of CuPd within the MOF pores, generating catalytic sites that facilitate hydrogen dissociation and subsequent confinement via the hydrogen spillover effect. Comprehensive characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirms the structural integrity of the hybrid and the localization of hydrogen near CuPd sites. Slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests reveal that UiO-66-NH2–CuPd coatings reduce HE susceptibility from 34.4 to 10.4% and enhance ductility by 42.5% relative to uncoated substrates. These results demonstrate that the synergistic integration of MOF porosity and bimetallic functionality enables efficient hydrogen trapping, suppressing lattice penetration. This work introduces a scalable, nanostructured interface for hydrogen management, offering a new paradigm in HE-resistant materials through controlled pore engineering and spillover enhancement.

MgH2 confinement in MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon nanofibers for enhanced hydrogen storage

Li Ren,Wen Zhu,Qiuyu Zhang,Chong Lu,Fengzhan Sun,Xi Lin,Jianxin Zou

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials, while the high desorption temperature and sluggish kinetics hamper its further commercialization. Herein, a novel MOF-derived 1D N-doped hierarchically porous carbon nanofiber (pCNF) is firstly prepared and used as the scaffold for self-assembly of MgH 2 /Ni nanoparticles (NPs). The resultant MgH 2 /Ni@pCNF nanocomposites show faster desorption kinetics ( E a  = 96.58 kJ/mol H 2 ), lower onset desorption temperature ( T onset  = 200 °C) when compare to the commercial MgH 2 ( E a  = 142.27 kJ/mol H 2 , T onset  = 350 °C). Moreover, hydrogen absorption can be achieved at a temperature as low as 100 °C with a capacity of 2.2 wt% within 120 min. Additionally, the composites exhibit excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention over 95.4% after 10 complete re-/dehydriding cycles at 300 °C. In-situ HRTEM observations of the desorption process combined with XPS and XRD indicate that the synergistic effects from nanoconfinement of Mg/MgH 2 in pCNF, electron-donating ability of N atoms and the “hydrogen pump” function of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 account for the unprecedent hydrogen storage properties. The strategy of using the MOF-derived 1D pCNF as support for nanoparticles provides a new approach for fabricating nanostructured energy materials with enhanced performances.

Tailoring linker defects in MOF-808 to improve CO2 separation in mixed matrix membranes

Po-Chun Wu,Ho Jun Lee,Yi-Fan Lin,Kuo-Lun Tung,Jong Suk Lee,Dun-Yen Kang

Carbon capture is widely recognized as a pivotal technology for alleviating the accelerating impacts of global warming. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that embed metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a compelling route to high-performance separations, and MOF-808 stands out among them because of its outstanding chemical stability and environmentally friendly synthesis. In this study, the defect density of MOF-808 was tuned by varying the formic acid modulator: Higher modulator loading produced MOF-808 with higher linker defect density. After synthesis, MOF-808 was washed with either water or ethanol and then incorporated into PEBAX matrix through a drying-free process that ensured uniform dispersion. Washing with ethanol altered the pore coordination environment of MOF-808, partially replacing formate with ethoxide. Introducing an appropriate amount of formic acid created additional open metal sites and increased both CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity; however, excessive formic acid produced too many defects, causing severe pore blockage and consequently lowering the CO 2 permeability. The drying-free method, by preventing MOF aggregation and ensuring homogeneous dispersion, led to a 38 % increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity compared with the conventional drying method. The ethoxide substitution induced by ethanol washing occupied part of the pore volume, leading to a reduction in CO 2 permeability. The optimized MOF-808/PEBAX MMM achieved a CO 2 permeability of 150 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 76.4, both markedly higher than those of the pristine polymer. These results highlight a sustainable, scalable strategy for producing high-efficiency membranes for post-combustion CO 2 capture.

2D montmorillonite-supported Ga-doped In-MOF composite for high-efficiency photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Ma Xueying,Yu Guomin,Li Yinghua,Li Hui,Wang Hongfang,Jia Xu,Cui Tiebing

To address the challenge of antibiotic residue remediation, this study employed a hydrothermal method to in-situ construct a bimetallic indium/gallium-based MIL-68 heterostructure on the surface of two-dimensional montmorillonite (MMT). By integrating metal node electronic structure regulation with interface engineering strategies, it provides a feasible approach to improve the low charge carrier separation efficiency in metal-organic framework (MOFs) materials. Experimental results demonstrate that when the MMT loading is 20%, the composite material exhibits obvious enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of 40 mg/L tetracycline solution, with a degradation rate of up to 97% within 60 min using 10 mg of catalyst. This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effect of In/Ga bimetals and the interface charge transfer channels of the MMT 2D matrix, which together induce a Z-type charge carrier migration mechanism, enhancing the separation efficiency of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. After four cycles, the MIL-68(In/Ga)/MMT composite showed good cycling stability and demonstrated broad-spectrum degradation capability, achieving degradation rates of 99% and 79% for rhodamine B and methyl orange, respectively. This composite material shows good photocatalytic performance in dye degradation, providing new research insights for the field of photocatalytic degradation of pollutants.

Enhanced Light-Responsive Proton Conduction in MOF-808 via Cooperative Azobenzene and Ionic Liquid Functionalization

Guo-Qin Zhang,Jiang-Long Chen,Yu-Ting Han,Zhi-Yuan Liu,Hong-Bin Luo,Xiao-Ming Ren

Light-responsive proton conductors represent an attractive research direction owing to their potential in intelligent devices and responsive sensing applications. Herein, we present a cooperative functionalization strategy to construct an MOF-based light-regulated proton-conducting material, MOF-808-AZOA-IL, by integrating azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (AZOA) and an ionic liquid (IL) into the MOF-808 framework. AZOA serves as a photoactive unit to endow light responsiveness, while the IL molecules form a continuous proton-conducting network, enhancing the concentration and mobility of protons. This synergy results in a proton-conduction on/off ratio up to ∼2000 of MOF-808-AZOA-IL, with excellent stability over repeated UV light on/off cycles. This work demonstrates that the incorporation of AZOA and IL synergistically enhances the light-regulated proton conduction of MOF-808, offering a reliable strategy for designing advanced stimuli-responsive proton-conductive systems.

Non-Equilibrium Pyrolysis Enables Nano-Confined Hetero-Interfaces in MOF-Derivatives for Advanced Dielectric Engineering

Siheng Liu,Chaozhong Shen,Zijie Deng,Xianhua Huan,Bin Du,Yushun Zhao,Hefeng Li,Chunyang Xu,Wenbin You,Renchao Che

Interfacial polarization is a cornerstone of dielectric engineering, yet the thermal processing required for interface construction typically triggers grain coarsening, thereby undermining interfacial density and dielectric performance. Here, a microwave non-equilibrium pyrolysis strategy is developed to overcome this bottleneck. By preprogramming compositional heterogeneity in a Zn-Ni bimetallic MOF and introducing a carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffold with strong microwave coupling capability, rapid structural reconstruction is achieved on a second-level timescale. Microwave-induced plasma arc discharge and transient thermal shock facilitate the confined nucleation and nanoscale dispersion of ZnO/NiO within N-doped carbon, creating a dense multiphase heterogeneous interface. This non-equilibrium pathway effectively suppresses structural relaxation, significantly boosting interfacial polarization and localized electric-field perturbations. Consequently, the MOF-derivatives achieve potent electromagnetic wave attenuation reaching a minimum reflection loss of −55.16 dB at 1.85 mm. Furthermore, this second-level strategy enables the energy-efficient and high-throughput production of heterogeneous powders, which, when integrated into macro-periodic architectures, achieve an ultra-wide bandwidth of 11.98 GHz. This work establishes a non-equilibrium pyrolysis paradigm that enables next-generation electromagnetic wave absorbers with integrated ultra-wideband performance and a minimal energy footprint.

Synergistic Ag-Cu nanoparticles in MOF-derived carbon: Enhanced electrocatalytic sensing platform for nitrite detection

Yuan Li,Shaoqian Jia,Ling-Xin Kong,Xiaotian Guo,Xinyi Lin,Dae Joon Kang,Huan Pang,Feng Yu

Accurate detection of nitrite plays a vital role in public health because excessive intake poses serious health risks. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have emerged as a promising platforms for nitrite detection due to their adjustable structures and functionalization capabilities. In this study, we synthesized Ag/Cu-BTC by doping silver ions during Cu-BTC synthesis, followed by high-temperature carbonization to produce carbon-supported Ag-Cu bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag/Cu@C) for effective nitrite sensing. The carbon framework from MOF precursors not only enhances electrical conductivity and stability but also prevents nanoparticle aggregation. Silver addition enhances electron transfer efficiency and alters the electronic structure through synergistic interactions with copper, resulting in increased catalytic activity. The optimized Ag/Cu@C composite shows excellent sensing performance with a detection limit of 50 nM, high sensitivity (855.32 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), and a wide linear response range (0.2–10,000 μM). The sensor maintains 98.5–103.2 % recovery against 10-fold concentrations of common interferents (Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- , glucose), and retains 92.3 % initial current after 28 days, demonstrating exceptional selectivity and operational stability. These features highlight its significant potential for practical applications in environmental monitoring and food safety testing.

Electron transfer in MOF-derived cobalt-magnesium oxide–carbon microsphere composite catalytic ozonation of thiamphenicol

Yong Li,Lin Zhang,Ziyi Zhang,Tongdong Shen,Kun-Yi Andrew Lin,Shaoping Tong

Cobalt-magnesium oxide–carbon microsphere composite (Co-MgO-CMS), Cobalt-carbon nanosheet composite (Co-CNS), and magnesium oxide–carbon nanorod composite (MgO-CNR) were synthesized by the MOFs self-sacrificing template method. And they were used as the catalysts for catalytic ozonation of thiamphenicol (20 mg/L) in water at an initial pH of 7.0. The phase of Co-MgO-CMS is mainly composed of metallic cobalt, magnesium oxide and carbon according to X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. Thiamphenicol removal efficiency is enhanced through Co-MgO-CMS catalytic ozonation (75.4 %, in 6 min), compared with those in ozonation alone (39.8 %), Co-CNS catalytic ozonation (43.2 %), MgO-CNR catalytic ozonation (65.1 %) and Mg-Co binary oxide (Mg 2 CoO y ) catalytic ozonation (69.0 %). Self-increasing of solution pH, protonated hydroxyl groups and electron transfer on metallic Co and lattice Co 2+ are advantageous for the ozone decomposition into reactive oxygen species in Co-MgO-CMS catalytic ozonation. Owing to the metallic Co in Co-MgO-CMS, the electron transfer ability of Co-MgO-CMS is better than that of Mg 2 CoO y according to the in situ electrochemical test. Moreover, electron transfers directly from metallic Co to ozone. While protonated hydroxyl groups are the key for electron transfer on lattice Co 2+ . A possible degradation pathway for thiamphenicol in Co-MgO-CMS catalytic ozonation is proposed according to the detected intermediates. This work provides insight into improvement on electron transfer ability of concerted acid-base catalyst in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.
