Pristine In 2 O 3 and ZnO–In 2 O 3 composited nanotubes were synthesized by the electrospinning technic and followed by calcination . The formation of ZnO–In 2 O 3 n–n heterojunctions was found to be highly sensitive to acetone gas. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) were respectively used to characterize surface crystallinity and morphology. The possible mechanism of nanotubes formation was also investigated. Gas sensors were made based on the as-synthesized materials to investigate their gas sensing properties. Compare with the pristine In 2 O 3 nanotubes, ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes show the obviously improved of acetone sensitivity. The sensitivity of ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes is about 43.2, which is about triple times larger than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 60 ppm acetone at 280 °C. The response and recovery times of ZnO–In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 60 ppm acetone are about 5 and 25 s. In addition, ZnO–In 2 O 3 composite nanotubes sensor also possesses a good selectivity to acetone.

An efficient portable gas sensor was developed to meet the needs of air quality monitoring, for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). In this study, coaxial electrospinning technology was used to synthesize porous nanofibers of indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) composite zinc oxide (ZnO), which are recognized as special semiconductor ceramic materials. The best sample (NFs.1–6) consists of a nanoparticle-based structure with interconnected pores, in contrast to the more compact, tightly bonded nanofibers. This porous structure enhances gas adsorption capacity, improving the sensor’s performance. At 200 °C, the synthesized In 2 O 3 @ZnO (NFs.1–6) nanofibers exhibited a high response value of 171.25 and a fast response time of 5 s to 100 parts per million (ppm) NO 2 . The excellent characteristic is attributed to its uniform structure and n-n homojunction, making the response values 38 times and 98 times that of pure ZnO and pure In 2 O 3 , respectively. Building on the research findings, a smart mask was developed that incorporates the nanofiber sensor to monitor NO 2 concentrations in the air, offering an innovative approach to wearable gas sensor technology by semiconductor ceramic materials.

In2O3(ZnO)k natural superlattices (where k is an integer), consisting of relatively earth abundant and non-toxic elements with coarsening-resistant nanostructures, are environmentally friendly materials with the potential for high temperature thermoelectric applications. Herein, we report our investigation of the high temperature thermoelectric properties of the In2O3(ZnO)4 superlattice bulk polycrystals that were singly and dually doped with Al and Ce. Transport property measurements revealed that Al and Ce did not only enter the ZnO blocks but also modified the InO2 single atomic layers. The effective electron potential barrier height of the superlattice interfaces can be adjusted by doping, and the optimal value that maximizes the power factor is of the order of kBT above the Fermi level. The interfacial thermal (Kapitza) resistance of the InO2 atomic sheets dramatically increased with doping, primarily accounting for the bulk thermal conductivity reduction. At the optimal crossing of the interfacial thermal resistance and the effective potential barrier height, a maximum ZT of ≈0.22 was achieved at 800 °C in the 1.6 mol% Al-doped superlattice, which was an enhancement of ∼200% over the pristine In2O3(ZnO)4. This work provides a new perspective on enhancing the high temperature thermoelectric performance of nanostructured oxides by synergistically optimizing the interfacial phonon and electron transport properties.

A multi-interfacial NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO porous heterojunction array was designed. • The heterojunction array enabled highly efficient room temperature ammonia detection. • Multi-phase interfaces greatly enhanced the ammonia adsorption and charge transfer. • Porous array design and light activation further promoted the sensing reaction. • The work clarified the important role of multi-phase interfaces in gas sensing. Heterojunction engineering provides an effective means to enhance the gas sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors through band structure optimization and interface effects. However, current research on heterojunction engineering primarily centers on binary heterojunctions (including p-n, n-n, and p-p junctions), while studies concerning ternary or multicomponent metal oxide heterojunctions for gas sensing remain exceedingly limited and challenging. Herein, a ternary NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO porous heterojunction array is fabricated in-situ on commercial alumina sensing substrate via a facile liquid-phase chemical reaction combined with topotactic transformation. The heterojunction array enables highly efficient room temperature ammonia detection under visible light illumination, exhibiting a high response of 263% towards 100 ppm ammonia, a fast recovery of 21 s, and a low detection limit of 0.483 ppm. Moreover, it displays excellent selectivity, strong resistance to humidity interference, and stable long-term performance. First-principles calculations integrated with spectroscopic characterization suggest that the construction of ternary NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterojunction with multi-phase interfaces greatly enhances the ammonia surface adsorption and promotes the interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Interestingly, there exists a notable positive correlation between the d-band center position of sensing materials and their adsorption behavior as well as sensing performance. This work not only achieves a multi-dimensional enhancement in the room temperature ammonia sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors through ternary heterojunction construction, porous array design and external light field activation, but also significantly enhances the gas sensing mechanism of ternary heterojunctions at atomic and electronic scale, offering new insights for the rational designing of high-performance resistive gas sensors via multi-phase interfaces.
