Benzoyl peroxide enhancing the combustion of aluminum/JP-10-based nanofluid fuel droplets

Chenxing Li,Weiqi Chen,Baozhong Zhu,Yunlan Sun

BPO stabilizes oxidation of nAl and boosts heat release of Al/JP-10 nanofluid fuels. • Al@SP80@BPO prevents premature micro-explosions and stabilizes JP-10 combustion. • SP80 and BPO increase the maximum combustion intensity of Al/JP-10 nanofluid droplet. The combustion of Al/JP-10-based nanofluid fuels suffers from incomplete solid-phase combustion, which hinders the full energy release. To address this issue, benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was introduced to enhance the combustion performance. Thermal analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of BPO on the thermal oxidation behavior of aluminum nanoparticles (nAl), and the combined influence of the surfactant (SP80) and BPO on the combustion mechanism of Al/JP-10 nanofluid fuels was systematically investigated. The results indicate that BPO incorporation effectively stabilizes nAl oxidation and increases the heat release per unit mass. Furthermore, the high thermal conductivity and strong radiative absorption of nAl, SP80 accumulation at the droplet surfaces, and BPO decomposition followed by re-oxidation collectively govern combustion behavior. These factors produce a higher thermal expansion rate of droplets and more intense micro-explosions, along with longer combustion duration. More importantly, this study demonstrates that the interfacial distribution of SP80 and BPO around nAl governs the balance between heat transfer and chemical heat release, thereby affecting micro-explosion intensity, particle retention, and combustion stability. This interfacial-structure-based insight offers new guidance for the rational design of high-energy-density nanofluid fuels. Preparation and Characterization of Metalized JP-10 Gel Propellants with Excellent Thixotropic Performance

Anqi Chen,Xidong Guan,Xiaomeng Li,Baohao Zhang,Bao Zhang,Jian Song

The preparation and characterization of a series of D-gluconic acetal supramolecular organic gelators (Gn) which can form gel with high-energy density hydrocarbon fuel JP-10 are reported. Rheological measurements show G8 gel exhibits strong mechanical strength at a concentration of 2 wt %, while G18 gel has a remarkable yield stress. What's more, JP-10 gels show thixotropy with high viscosity, especially for the G8-based gel, which has an instantaneous recovery ratio. The CGC (critical gelator concentration) of G8 is less than 0.1 wt %, known as a super gelator. More interestingly, G18 can gel JP-10 at room temperature, which is the first example of room temperature gel propellant formed by a supramolecular gelator. Nano accelerants (Al, B) are dispersed into the gel propellant system, which can be stable for months. The presence of 50 nm Al powder in G8-based gel can significantly increase its mechanical strength, yield stress and viscosity, as well as thixotropy.

Catalytic production of fused tetracyclic high-energy-density fuel with biomass-derived cyclopentanone and benzoquinone

Xu Zhang,Wen-Jing Zhang,Yan-Cheng Hu,Zhi-Guang Zhang,Jing-Pei Cao

High-energy-density (HED) fuels (e.g. JP-10) are of great importance in safeguarding territorial air security, since they can increase the flight range and payload of military aircrafts. To reduce the reliance on limited petroleum source, the production of HED fuel with renewable biomass feedstocks is highly appealing. But currently, most of the synthetic biofuels, due to their intrinsic ring structure, are incapable of competing with JP-10 in terms of energy density and freezing point. By emulating the structural characteristic of JP-10, we herein design and prepare a special C 16 fused tetracyclic biofuel using renewable cyclopentanone and benzoquinone as feedstocks. Key to success depends on selective dehydration of vicinal diol (dimer of cyclopentanone) over Amberlyst-15 in [Hmim]Cl. The Amberlyst-15/[Hmim]Cl system effectively suppresses the dominant pinacol-type rearrangement pathway and also exhibits good reusability for the dehydration. The hydrogen-bonding interaction between vicinal diol and imidazolium ring, as well as electrostatic force between carbocation intermediate and chloride anion contribute to the high diene selectivity. The compact ring framework gives rise to a density of 0.966 g/mL, combustion heat of 43.1 MJ/L, freezing point of ‒67 °C, and kinematic viscosity of 12.4 cSt, which are comparable to the properties of JP-10. It is expected that this as-prepared HED biofuel may potentially serve as a renewable alternative to petroleum fuel JP-10.

Synthesis and fuel properties of high-density and low-freezing-point asymmetric cycloalkyl adamantane

Jiawei Xie,Haodong Zhang,Tinghao Jia,Junjian Xie,Ji-Jun Zou

The exploration to increase the fuel energy density is stimulated by the payload and cruising range concerns in aerospace industry. The high-density fuels are always rationally designed for the advanced volume-limited aircrafts to fulfill more complicated missions. Alkyl adamantanes gradually become a prospective class of high-energy-density fuels. Herein, in this work, we reported an approach to synthesize asymmetric cyclopentyl adamantane via AlCl 3 -catalyzed alkylation of adamantane and cyclopentene with an attractive combination of a high density of 0.990 g/mL as well as a low freezing point of −30 °C. The obtained 1-cyclopentyl-adamantane was well designed with the cyclic substituent (enhance the density) and asymmetric structure (lower the freezing temperature). Subsequently, the comprehensive fuel performance of cyclopentyl adamantane, i.e. , density, freezing point, low-temperature viscosity, heating value , and combustion properties were evaluated. It was shown that both density and combustion properties of cycloalkyl adamantane were superior to the typical high-density JP-10 fuel. In addition, the properties of binary fuel mixture (1-cyclopentyl-adamantane and JP-10) demonstrated that cyclopentyl adamantane could be used as a promising blendstock with conventional jet fuel to enhance the energy density and promote the combustion performance of the final fuel blends.

Influence of the oxidation degree of aluminum nanoparticles on the stability and combustion of Al/JP-10 nanofluid fuels

Zhe Kong,Yucai Lu,Jinyu Dai,Yunlan Sun,Jiuyu Chen,Baozhong Zhu

Hydrocarbon fuels doped with aluminum nanoparticles (ANPs) can enhance their combustion and energy output characteristics. However, there is an unknown impact of its oxidation degree on the stability and ignition and combustion performance (IACP) of nanofluid fuels. The experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were combined to explore the impact of ANPs with varying degrees of oxidation on the stability and IACP of aluminum/JP-10 (Al/JP-10)-based nanofluid fuels. The unoxidized ANPs are better dispersed in JP-10 fuel. However, as the oxidation degree of the ANPs increases, their agglomeration in JP-10 increases, reducing the stability of Al/JP-10 fuels. Especially, the activation energy of the Al/JP-10 (ANPs) system also increases, leading to a 36.8 % longer ignition delay for JP-10 fuel. In addition, the oxidation of ANPs partially inhibits the reaction of the core Al, which delays the peak of the formation of Al cluster, and thus hindering the combustion behavior of the nanofluid fuel. At 2000 K, the oxidation of ANPs suppresses the thermal decomposition of JP-10, while at 3000 K, Al 2 O 3 exhibits the most pronounced catalytic influence on JP-10 combustion.

Synthesis and Performance of Cyclopentadiene-Based Spirocyclopropane High-Energy-Density Fuels

Wei Wang,Zhensheng Shen,Jiaxiang Zhang,Lun Pan,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

High-energy–density fuels play a vital role in the development of the aviation industry because they can provide more propulsion energy than conventional liquid fuels. Constructing more five- or six-membered rings in fuel molecules is an efficient way to increase fuel density. However, as the number of rings increases, the hydrogen content of fuel molecules gradually decreases, resulting in a decrease in the mass calorific value, which limits the further improvement of the volumetric calorific value, meanwhile, the low-temperature characteristics of the fuel become worsen. Considering the high strain energy stored in cyclopropane moiety and the good cryogenic properties of spiro fuel, in this work, two spirocyclopropane high-energy–density fuels have been synthesized from cyclopentadiene by phase transfer catalytic cyclopropanation and palladium catalytic cyclopropanation, and the reaction conditions have been optimized. The synthesized fuels possess heat value and specific impulse higher than the widely used high-energy–density fuel JP-10. Additionally, their kinematic viscosity at low temperatures is only about one-third that of JP-10. The outstanding properties of the synthesized strained fuels suggest their good potential as high-energy–density fuels.

Strategically designed macromolecules as additives for high energy-density hydrocarbon fuels

Ji Mi,Dengfeng Ye,Yitong Dai,Hujun Xie,Di Wu,Haiyun Sun,Yongsheng Guo,Wenjun Fang

To improve oxidative stability and heat sink of hydrocarbon fuels, a series of versatile macromolecular additives, BHPEI and CBHPEI, were synthesized by modification of hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) (HPEI). These macromolecules were used as circumstance-dependent additives in JP-10, a high energy–density hydrocarbon fuel. Each strategically designed macromolecule serves not only as a radical scavenger to improve the thermal-oxidative stability of hydrocarbon fuels at relatively low temperature, but also as a cracking initiator for heat sink enhancement as the temperature rises. According to the ASTM E1858, with the addition of BHPEI-10K at 500 ppm, the oxidation induction time of JP-10 under 175 °C could increase from 9.3 min to 14.8 min. The insoluble deposits could be reduced by 73% with the addition of 500 ppm BHPEI-10K according to accelerated oxidation tests. The superior antioxidation capability of macromolecular antioxidants were further elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the BHPEI-10K performed decently as a macromolecular initiator for supercritical cracking of JP-10, with a dosage of 0.1 wt%, the conversion of JP-10 at 675 °C can be elevated from 16.4% to 33.4% and the corresponding heat sink can be improved from 1.98 MJ/kg to 2.15 MJ/kg.

Emulsified fuel stabilized by comb-type ternary block copolymers for drag reduction and heat transfer enhancement

Bin Sun,Xiwei Ye,Yongsheng Guo,Shu Yan,Wenjun Fang

Turbulent flow in high-speed hydrocarbon fuels increases engine resistance and pump load, leading to higher power demands and reduced reliability. Current drag reduction agents often worsen heat transfer performance. To overcome the contradiction between drag reduction and heat transfer deterioration, comb-type ternary block copolymers, hexadecyl methacrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid, have been designed and synthesized through photoinitiated polymerization and used as emulsifiers to prepare emulsified fuels. The emulsions with different compositions of JP-10 to water as 9.5:0.5, 9:1, 8.5:1.5, and 8:2, respectively, were characterized using creaming index analysis, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements, rheological analysis, laser scanning confocal microscopy and polarized optical microscopy measurements, interfacial tension and interfacial film rheology measurements. A significant enhancement in heat sink and heat transfer coefficients of the emulsified fuel compared to pure JP-10 is observed within the temperature range from 100 to 225 °C. Simultaneous enhancements in drag reduction rate and heat transfer coefficient for the emulsified fuel in a distributed flow calorimeter can reach 19.5 % and 6.09 %, respectively. Emulsified fuels show great prospects in improving the stable and highly efficient operation of advanced aircraft.

Acid-catalyzed rearrangement of biomass polycyclic sesquiterpene derivatives to high-performance alkyl-adamantanes

Yumei Shu,Xiaoyu Wang,Tinghao Jia,Lun Pan,Qingfa Wang,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

Biomass-based aviation fuel is attractive for sustainable development. Herein, we report a facile route to synthesize alkyl-adamantanes (AAMs) via acid-catalyzed rearrangement of biomass polycyclic sesquiterpene derivatives (bio-PCS derivatives). The reaction conditions including catalysts, solvents, reaction temperature and reaction time were optimized. Notably, a total AAMs yield of 65.1% was achieved under the optimal conditions. The kinetics of rearrangement reaction was investigated, and the reaction rate constant ( k ) and apparent activation energy ( E a ) were calculated based on the experimental kinetic data. The rearrangement products possess high density of 0.90 g/cm 3 , high net heat of combustion of 42.6 MJ/kg, low viscosity (22.5 mm 2 /s at −20℃) and high thermal oxidative stability. The blending of rearrangement products with JP-10 can significantly shorten the ignition delay time (IDT) of JP-10. This work provides a method to synthesize high-performance biomass-based AAMs.
