Controllable Water Penetration through a Smart Brass Mesh Modified by Mercaptobenzoic Acid and Naphthalenethiol

Cong-Cong Luan,Yu-Ping Zhang,Cheng-Xing Cui,De-Liang Chen,Yuan Chen,Meng-Jun Chen

In this paper, a novel pH-responsive brass mesh modified by 3-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) and 2-naphthalenethiol (NPT) was demonstrated via a facile chemical etching method followed by surface modification. The smart wettability was dependent on the assembled MBA and NPT with suitable thiol proportions. The on–off control of water penetrating intelligently into the nanostructured brass mesh substrate was carried out by the pH change in the outside environment. The brass mesh modified with XNPT= 0.4 (mole fraction of NBT in the mixed solution) exhibited the strongest pH responsivity from superhydrophobicity to superhydrophilicity. Furthermore, the resulted Janus membrane (JM) fabricated by the integration of a smart brass mesh and hydrophobic Ni foam could be used as a water diode in air and liquid systems. Unidirectional penetration for the water droplet was realized by the resulting smart JM with a hydrophobic upper layer and a pH-responsive layer below. Keywords:smart material;brass mesh;3-mercaptobenzoic acid;2-naphthalenethiol;Janus membrane

Rational Design of PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus Membrane with Asymmetric Wettability for Switchable Emulsion Separation

Jingjun Peng,Bhaskar Jyoti Deka,Shaodi Wu,Zhongyuan Luo,Jehad A. Kharraz,Wei Jia

Water pollution caused by oil spills or sewage discharges has become a serious ecological environmental issue. Despite the membrane separation technique having a promising application in wastewater purification, the membrane fabrication method and separation robustness have remained unsatisfactory until now. Herein, we developed a novel strategy, spacer-assisted sequential phase conversion, to create a patterned polyvinylidene fluoride@polypropylene (P-PVDF@PP) substrate membrane with a multiscale roughened surface. Based on that surface structure, the underwater oil resistance behavior of the P-PVDF@PP membrane was improved. Moreover, owing to the abundant active sites on the P-PVDF@PP surface, the polydopamine/P-PVDF@PP (PDA/P-PVDF@PP) Janus membrane could be readily fabricated via wet chemical modification, which exhibited excellent switchable oil–water separation performance. Regarding surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion, the as-prepared PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane also had robust separation efficiency (as high as 99% in the n-hexane/water, chloroform/water, and toluene/water emulsion separation cases) and desirable reusability. Finally, the underlying mechanism of emulsion separation in the PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane was specified. The as-designed PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane with high-efficiency oil–water separation shows potential application in oily wastewater treatment, and the developed fabrication method has implications for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes. Keywords:emulsion separation;Janus membrane;patterned interface;switchable wettability

Preparation Janus membrane via polytetrafluoroethylene membrane modification for enhanced performance of vacuum membrane distillation desalination

Wei Zhang,Shuili Yu,Ping Li,Xingli Ji,Rongsheng Ning,Pan Li

In this study, we developed novel Janus membranes with multilevel hierarchical structures to prevent membrane pore wetting and enhance the performance for desalination simultaneously. Here, a Janus membrane with multilevel roughness was tailored via a polydopamine (PDA) coating followed by deposition of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and PDA sealing. These novel Janus membranes demonstrated outstanding antiwetting properties and salt rejection performances in comparison to pristine polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. Particularly, the specific flux of Janus membranes was maintained in a relatively stable state (0.6–0.7) after membrane cleaning with pure water, meanwhile, the permeate conductivity was maintained in the range of 0–30 µS/cm with the desalination rate of 99.9% during the vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) tests by using 6.98 wt.% feed solutions, indicating that these Janus membranes (i.e., P/Fe/P-PTFE membrane) can improve the performance for VMD desalination without membrane wetting throughout the test duration. Furthermore, we ascribed these Janus membranes’ superior performances to the coupled effects of super hydrophilicity brought about by PDA layer and self-healing mechanism provided by Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. This work highlights the great potential of novel Janus membranes with multilevel hierarchical structures for water reclamation from challenging high-salinity wastewater through VMD.

A simple preparation of ultrathin AuNWs-PEDOT:PSS bilayer Janus film for high performance chemiresistive ammonia gas sensor

Jianchun Jiang,Qingmeng Pi,Jiahang Zhou,Yixuan Du,Yunbo Li

Ammonia is increasingly deemed a significant, green sustainable fuel which requires a large number of detection devices. In this study, ultrathin AuNWs/PEDOT:PSS Janus films had been prepared with ultrathin AuNWs film treated with H 2 S which could integrate with PEDOT:PSS film closely. The resulting transparent and flexible Janus film sensor showed the good response and selectivity performance to ammonia gas. Moreover, the sensitivity of Janus film devices to ammonia was greatly improved and the conductivity of the Janus films was kept well with increasing thermal annealing temperature. The limit detection for NH 3 was 500 ppb concentration and the improvement mechanism of the sensing performance was attributed to the increased surface area of conductive polymer . This method provides a universal platform to integrate different materials into Janus films and prepare next-generation flexible detection sensors.

Preparation of robust, customizable Janus membrane with hydrogel-like coating via interfacial free radical polymerization for membrane distillation

Xiaolong Tian,Guoyang Chen,Han Wang,Jian Cui,Ailin Gao,Yehai Yan

Janus membranes exhibit notable benefits in enhancing the anti-fouling ability during membrane distillation (MD). However, the bonding stability between the hydrophilic layer and the hydrophobic matrix is a worrying concern. In this work, we developed an interfacial free radical polymerization (IFRP) method by segregating photoinitiator and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) monomers into the oil and water phases, respectively. This approach facilitated a crosslinking reaction initiated at the oil–water interface, leading to the formation of a discontinuous or continuous hydrogel-like coating on one side of the PVDF membrane within a 30-second light-induced reaction. The PEGDA gel filled the membrane pores rather than growing outward along its surface, thus creating a “physical interlocking” effect and significantly enhancing their bonding stability. Anti-fouling and anti-wetting experiments were conducted under harsh conditions, including hypersaline solution of 20 wt%, high oil-content saline emulsion and humic acid/CaCl 2 mixed brine. Results demonstrated stable water vapor flux and salt rejection. By increasing the molecular weight of PEGDA monomers, a dense gel layer can be conveniently obtained, which can withstand high-concentration surfactant. This proposed IFRP method offers strong customizability, enabling the efficient production of either porous or dense hydrophilic layers to adapt to various salt solutions.

Bioinspired Janus Membrane with Dopamine-ZnO Coating for Antibacterial Filtration in Oral Applications

Yumeng Guo,Qian Wang,Guoming Sun,Ying Zheng

Developing an oral fibrous barrier membrane that prevents bacterial invasion while possessing antibacterial properties and facilitating fluid decompression remains a significant clinical and scientific challenge. In this study, we developed a novel Janus membrane by modifying a polypropylene (PP) fibrous membrane with dopamine and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). Fabricated via a simple floating immersion method, this asymmetric bilayer structure consists of a hydrophobic PP layer and a hydrophilic PP/dopamine@30 nm ZnO layer, providing both antibacterial properties and enhanced fluid filtration. The mechanical properties of the PP/ZnO membrane were significantly enhanced, with an increase in the Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength, indicating improved strength. Antibacterial activity againstStreptococcus mutans(S. mutans) demonstrated a significant reduction in biofilm formation on the PP/dopamine@30 nm ZnO surface compared to unmodified PP. Water flux tests confirmed a stable, high filtration rate, with increased permeability under rising pressure. In vivo experiments with miniature pigs confirmed reduced bacterial presence on the sterile side of the membrane. These findings highlight the potential of the membrane for oral exudate filtration, extending filtration time and minimizing infection risks under strict sterility conditions. Further improvements in barrier properties are necessary to optimize its clinical performance.

An Efficient Fog Collection Origami Janus Membrane for Rapid Directional Water Transport and Omnidirectional Fog Harvesting

Qiong Wang,Yihang Zhang,Guangyi Tian,Zhiguang Guo

Existing Janus fog harvesting technologies struggle to achieve efficient and continuous fog collection across various fog flow directions. In this work, we developed a Janus fog harvesting (JHL) system, characterized by a boundary-free Janus system formed by selective modification with octadecanethiol, creating a pair of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. The system features a 3D origami macrostructure composed of scallop arrays and shaped like an improved trumpet flower. The wettability gradient Janus system enables rapid droplet capture and ultrafast absorption. The multiple parallel and dual-asymmetric 3D Kirigami superhydrophilic channels facilitate high-speed, directional, and long-range liquid transport. These mechanisms work seamlessly together to keep both the superhydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces dry at all times. As a result, our JHL achieves a fog harvesting efficiency as high as 0.83 g·cm–2·min–1, which is 3 times that of the original sample. Moreover, our improved trumpet-shaped 3D structure extends the Janus design concept from traditional membrane materials to spatial membrane configurations, making it suitable for omnidirectional fog harvesting in any fog flow environment.

Advanced Janus Membrane with Directional Sweat Transport and Integrated Passive Cooling for Personal Thermal and Moisture Management

Yang Peng,Ju Yanshan,He Jiajun,Xia Zhengcai,Chen Liang,Tang Shaochun

Passive cooling holds tremendous potential in improving thermal comfort because of its zero energy consumption and cost-effectiveness. However, currently reported radiative cooling materials primarily focus on hydrophobic polymer films, inevitably leading to sweat accumulation and limited cooling efficiency in hot-humid environments. Herein, an advanced Janus membrane with excellent temperature–moisture management capabilities is developed, which combines radiative cooling and evaporative heat dissipation. Modification with Calcium sulfite (CaSO 3 ) nanoparticles not only enhances the optical properties (state-of-the-art solar reflectance of 96.6%, infrared emittance of 96.1%) but also improves the wettability of the polylactic acid fiber membrane. Especially 15% emittance improvement is achieved due to the strong infrared radiation ability of CaSO 3 . The membranes with opposite wettability realize the directional sweat transport (high one-way transport index of 945%). Excellent radiative cooling capability is demonstrated with sub-ambient cooling of 5.8 °C in the dry state. The Janus membranes covering sweaty skin exhibit a 46% shorter drying time and a 2 °C lower average evaporation temperature compared to cotton fabric, indicating highly efficient thermal and moisture management. This work provides an efficient route to achieving smart textiles that enable the human body to adapt to complex environmental conditions. Graphical Abstract

Electrospinning janus membranes for on-demand oil/water collection and emulsion separation

Haitao Meng,Tong Xu,Chunping Li,Jie Bai

Oily water pollution has become one of the most serious water environment issue in worldwide. Membrane that can effectively and efficiently remove different oil pollutions from the complex water environment is still urgently needed. Herein, a Janus membrane with opposite wettability that can separate heavy oil–water and light oil–water mixtures on demand was prepared by using a simple sequential electrospinning and chemical crosslinking method. The membrane could remove oil or water under gravity with a high oil/water flux and excellent separation efficiency. Moreover, the membrane could separate different kinds of oil-in-water emulsions under gravity with a high flux of 1184 L m −2 h −1 and a tiny flux loss of 4.4% after a 10-cycle separation. Owing to its excellent anti-pollution properties the flux recovery rate of the membrane was still higher than 80% after 150 min of emulsion separation. Additionally, the membrane also displayed the ability to transport liquid unidirectionally, giving whom the capabilities to collect oil underwater or water underoil. This research provides a novel and simple method for producing membranes for a variety of separation applications. Graphical

Thermochromic Janus Membranes with Dynamic Solar Modulation toward Sustainable and High-Efficiency Solar-to-Thermal Intelligent Management

Qian Yan,Renjie Ding,Pengyang Li,Haowen Zheng,Zhong Chen,Jinhua Xiong,Zonglin Liu,Xu Zhao,Fuhua Xue,Liangliang Xu,Huanxin Lian,Shanyi Du,Zhigong Tang,Qingyu Peng,Xiaodong He

Solar-energy thermal management, characterized by its environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, holds a promising future, which has brought about widespread interest in the evolution of solar-to-thermal materials with the desired properties. Nevertheless, in both hot and cold environments, challenges in developing functionally integrated hydrogels for sustainable thermal regulation still remain. In this study, a rationally, simply, and effectively designed structured Janus membrane, consisting of a Ti3C2Tx MXene/GO/alginate fibers nonwoven (GMF) layer and a P (NIPAM co-DMAA) (PAD) hydrogel layer. The GMF with excellent hydrophilicity forms an interpenetrating structure with the PAD hydrogel through strong hydrogen bonds and can be easily adapted to multishape and multifield applications. By adjusting the content of thermochromic PAD hydrogel monomers, an improvement in the critical transition temperature (37.7 °C) and a reduction in volume shrinkage has been achieved, and the full-spectrum intrinsic transmittance is 67.59%, which is of excellent practicability and cyclic stability. Under constant sunlight, the hydrogel’s phase transition decelerates the temperature increment in the photothermal layer, thereby establishing a stable equilibrium temperature in the environment. The equilibrium temperature of the photothermal layer can be adjusted between 32 and 36 °C to match a variety of climates by regulating the relative content of the Ti3C2Tx MXene and GO in the photothermal layer. Additionally, the existence of the thermochromic hydrogel in the Janus membrane prevents the indoor temperature from overheating. Furthermore, the membrane’s asymmetric structure enhances its ability to reduce heat dissipation, crucial for high-performance thermal management. Moreover, this novel structure can be used as a self-supporting agricultural film to maintain a stable temperature in the environment for efficient plant growth, demonstrating significant potential in new modern agriculture.

Innovative Janus wood membranes: Harnessing wood anisotropy for superior liquid separation and transport

Kaiwen Chen,Xianfu Xiao,Cheng Hao,Fengze Sun,Haonan Zhang,Yujing Tan,Jianyi Zhu,Hui Peng,Tianyi Zhan,Jianxiong Lyu,Ning Yan

The asymmetric wettability of Janus membranes shows promising prospects in the field of liquid transport and separation, and researchers are seeking environmentally friendly and cost-effective feedstock for fabricating these membranes. In this study, we developed two types of high-performance, flexible, and durable asymmetric Janus membranes from wood: Janus cross-section wood membrane (JCW) and Janus longitudinal-section wood membrane (JLW). Wood, being an anisotropic material stemming from its grain orientation, possesses a hierarchical porous structure that can be tailored for various practical applications. The JCW, characterized by its vertical wood channel structure and larger pore size, demonstrated superior unidirectional water transport and fog collection capabilities. Its water–oil separation efficiency reached 99.9%, with a filtration flux exceeded 3000 L/m 2 ∙h. The JLW, featuring three-dimensional interconnected micro-nano channels and layered pathways, was particularly effective in separating oil–water emulsions. The separation efficiency of oil–water emulsions reached 99.91%, with filtration fluxes for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions being as high as 500 and 700 L/m 2 ∙h, respectively. These results underscored the potential of asymmetric wettability Janus membranes in the fields of liquid transport and separation, while also paving the way for the utilization of sustainable and eco-friendly feedstocks.

Novel conductive Janus membranes with water diode effect assisted by an electrostatic field for efficient mass transfer and oil-water separation

Xinyu Hu,Jing Wang,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin,Liguo Shen,Yanchao Xu,Meijia Zhang,Jiaheng Teng,Die Ling Zhao

Membrane separation technology is effective for treating oily wastewater but is limited by the lack of membranes that are both highly permeable and fouling-resistant. Janus membranes , with asymmetric wettability and electrostatic repulsion of charged oil droplets , offer a potential strategy for oil-water separation. This study developed novel electrically enhanced conductive Janus membranes using metal-modified organic membranes to achieve high-efficiency treatment. Conductive metal Janus membranes were fabricated using a straightforward two-step method involving simple electroless nickel plating and surface peeling. The resulting nickel-coated surface of the membrane demonstrated extreme hydrophilicity , underwater oleophobicity, and excellent conductivity (approximately 4.7 Ω). Fascinatingly, the developed membranes exhibited a “water diode” effect, facilitating unidirectional liquid transport without external pressure. Gravity-driven oil-water separation achieved a flux rate of 4874 L m −2  h −1 and over 99 % oil removal efficiency, surpassing most existing studies. During electro-filtration of oil-water emulsions, the conductive Janus membrane as a cathode generated electrostatic repulsion, preventing emulsified oil droplet adhesion. Applying an external voltage increased the flux by approximately 13 times and oil removal efficiency to 99.6 %. The membrane's separation capability remained consistent across six cycle tests, demonstrating robust stability. As all, this work first synthesized conductive “water diode” Janus membranes with high oil-water separation efficiency, offering fresh perspectives on the design and fabrication of Janus membranes as well as on the processes for treating oily wastewater.
