The application of electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 is limited by the low solubility of CO 2 in water, separation of products, energy conversion efficiency and insufficient catalyst performance. In this research, enhanced CO 2 reduction was observed in alcohol amine solution by using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with gold or copper. Copper was found to be distributed more evenly and thus had a larger electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) through the pre-intercalation of EDTA when compared with the direct ion-exchange of [AuCl 4 ] − with LDHs. In 0.5 M KHCO 3 solutions, CO and H 2 was monitored for Au/MgAl-LDHs while additional products of CH 4 and HCOOH was measured by using Cu/MgAl-LDHs. In 1.0 M alcohol amine solutions, CO and H 2 were determined as the main products for both Au/MgAl-LDHs and Cu/MgAl-LDHs. Under all the test conditions hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was enhanced towards negative potential, resulting in a higher Faraday's Efficiency (FE) for H 2 .

Herein, magnetic porous pinecone-derived hydrochar (MPHC MW ) co-activated by KHCO 3 and K 2 FeO 4 through one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis was innovatively synthesized for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and anthracene (ANT) removal from water. The analyses of characterization consequences and co-activation mechanisms not merely proved the high specific surface area (703.97 m 2 /g) and remarkable microporous structures of MPHC MW caused by the synergistic chemical activation of KHCO 3 and K 2 FeO 4 , but also testified successful loading of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 on MPHC MW by the process of carbothermal reduction between K 2 FeO 4 and carbon matrix of hydrochar. The resultant MPHC MW possessed pH-dependence for Cr(VI), while adsorption for ANT was hardly impacted by the pH of solution. Moreover, the adsorption processes of MPHC MW could attain equilibrium within 60 min for Cr(VI) and 30 min for ANT with multiple kinetics, and the corresponding adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) and ANT was 128.15 and 60.70 mg/g, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption percentages of MPBC MW for Cr(VI)/ANT was maintained at 87.87/82.64% after three times of adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, pore filling, complexation, electrostatic interaction, reduction and ion exchange were testified to enhance the removal of Cr(VI), while the ANT removal was achieved via π-π stacking, complexation, pore filling and hydrogen bonding force.

Tetracycline(TC) contamination necessitates effective remediation. Utilizing agricultural waste like corn straw pith offers a sustainable route to develop high-efficiency adsorbents for removing antibiotics from aquatic systems. A novel dual-modification strategy was developed using agricultural waste corn straw pith as the precursor. This approach combined K 2 HPO 4 -assisted hydrothermal pretreatment with KHCO 3 solid-state activation to synthesize a high-performance biochar adsorbent designated as KPBC-800. The resulting material was characterized to analyze its pore structure and surface chemistry. Additionally, adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate its capacity for tetracycline removal, kinetic behavior, isotherm models, pH adaptability, and resistance to ionic interference. The synthesized KPBC-800 exhibited an ultra-high specific surface area of 1991.40 m 2 /g and a layered micro-mesoporous network, alongside directionally enriched oxygen-containing functional groups. It demonstrated a maximal tetracycline adsorption capacity of 722.02 mg/g, with the process following the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The adsorbent showed broad pH adaptability and excellent resistance to ionic interference. Mechanistic studies revealed that superior performance resulted from the synergy of hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions, and effective pore filling. This work demonstrates a feasible dual‑activation strategy for upgrading agricultural waste into a high‑performance biochar adsorbent, providing insights that may inform the design of efficient antibiotic removal materials.

Tuning the geometric and electronic structure of bimetallic electrocatalyst to facilitate a specific reaction pathway and offer more active sites is a promising avenue for enhancing activity and selectivity of electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). Owing to formation of Bi-Cu interface through the separated growth of Bi and Cu atoms on defective copper foam, the Bi-Cu bimetallic electrode converts CO 2 to formate with an allured Faradaic efficiency (94.37%) and partial current density (27.85 mA cm −2 ) at -0.91 Vversus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Notably, such electrode with tight moss-like structure delivers the excellent durability under 58 h electrolysis, outperforming most of the current Bi-based catalysts. Moreover, we have experimentally shown that KOH is a better electrolyte than KHCO 3 due to the lower solution resistance and more confinement of free CO 2 gas, and the alkaline anion-exchange membrane is more ideal than the cation-exchange membrane counterpart, owing to the enhancement of formate selectivity by suppressing the evolution of H 2 . This study inspires a complete set of concepts for highly converting CO 2 to formate that contains the design of effective electrocatalysts, the role of growth substrate, the effect of different electrolytes and membranes.

Corncob, as a sustainable biomass waste, is mainly composed of hemicellulose. Herein, on the basis of natural corncob as substrates, Fe/N co-doped porous carbon spheres were designed via a consecutive FeCl3-mediated hydrothermal reaction and mild KHCO3 activation route for supercapacitor electrode materials. Owing to the low hydrolysis temperature of hemicellulose and hydrolysis promotion of Fe3+, the corncob-derived hydrochar exhibited special carbon sphere morphology. Interestingly, the carbon sphere morphology was well-preserved upon the melamine-mediated KHCO3 activation. As a result of the short ion diffusion distance, unique packing architecture, and developed micro–mesoporous structure of the carbon spheres, optimized CCAC-Fe-M-50% manifested superior ion transfer kinetics and rate performances (87% up to 20 A g–1). Meanwhile, the electrochemical investigation of CCAC-Fe-M-50% in a three-electrode setup illustrated high capacitance (338 F g–1 at 1 A g–1). In a two-electrode setup, the CCAC-Fe-M-50%||CCAC-Fe-M-50% device revealed supreme cyclability (102.7% retention after 5000 cycles) and extremely low Rct (0.59 Ω) and Rs (4.54 Ω). These superior properties were attributed to the large SBET (2305.7 m2 g–1), the multiple redox possibilities (Fe3+, Fe2+, and N functional groups), and the carbon sphere morphology with a micro–mesoporous structure, which enhanced ion physisorption, pseudocapacitance, and electrolyte/ion diffusion, respectively. Besides, the fabricated CCAC-Fe-M-50%||CCAC-Fe-M-50% device in a neutral electrolyte demonstrated a superb energy density (ED) of 18.60 Wh kg–1 at the power density (PD) of 455 W kg–1. The currently presented strategy with superior results might lead to the novel development of biomass-based ultraperformance electrode materials for supercapacitors and other high-tech applications.

Typical organic pollutants from coal-combustion flue gas such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) need to be effectively controlled. This work synthesized a series of nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NHPCs) by one-step activation with various proportions of cellulose, (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 and KHCO 3 /NaHCO 3 . The NHPCs have a high specific surface area and pore volume up to 2816 m 2 /g and 1.413 cm 3 /g as well as a hierarchical porous structure with micro-meso-macropores distribution. The dynamic adsorption tests of toluene at 600 ppm showed that NHPCs have a high adsorption capacity up to 585 mg/g (NHPC(K)131), this was about 3 times more than that of AC (208 mg/g), and is a better absorbent compared to many other carbon adsorbents. The porous characteristics and toluene adsorption properties of NHPCs improved along with the fluctuation of the proportions of raw materials and active agents. The micropore size of the material is the main factor that affecting the toluene adsorption capacity. The analysis of toluene dynamic adsorption breakthrough curves revealed that NHPCs had great toluene adsorption kinetics with high adsorption rate constants and short mass transfer zone. The excellent toluene adsorption kinetics of NHPCs can be attributed to the hierarchical porous structure. The abundant 2–10 nm mesopores and macropores of NHPCs act as mass transfer channels for toluene molecules. The XPS analysis showed that the NHPCs have nitrogen doping up to 6.71% (NHPC(Na)161) and they effectively promote toluene adsorption. The nitrogen doping mechanism can be attributed to the reactions between cellulose pyrolysis substances and NH 3 which decomposed from (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 . Moreover, the pore forming reactivity of KHCO 3 is better than that of NaHCO 3 in the NHPCs activation process.
