Antibiotic micro-pollution is usually found at the ng/L–level in drinking water sources or discharge water of wastewater treatment plants . In this study, a novel approach mediated by manganese oxidizing bacteria (MnOB) in a biofilter was developed to control the pollution. The results indicated that the biogenic manganese oxide (MnO x ) produced during the oxidation of the feeding manganese ions could coat the surface of the filtering sand effecting the simultaneous removal of antibiotics. It was found that the removal of antibiotics is insured as long as the feeding manganese was well removed and was not influenced by the hydraulic loading. The growth rate of the MnOB group revealed that the antibiotic concentration at 50 and 100 ng/L promoted their activity, but it was inhibited at 500 and 1000 ng/L. The structure of the bacterial community was stable in the presence of antibiotics (50 ng/L), but their extracellular processes changed. The removal performance of the feeding manganese seemed to relate to the extracellular processes of the dominant bacterial genus. Moreover, the freshly formed MnO x was a buserite-like material that was rich in Mn(III) and Mn(IV) (94.1%), favoring the degradation. The biofilter did not generate additional antibiotic resistant genes in the presence of antibiotics.

Stable isotope is a potent geochemical tracer unveiling the dynamic sources of cadmium (Cd) in the environment. However, the sorption process of aqueous Cd onto solid surfaces (e.g., soil) fractionates isotopic signatures, which makes it difficult to interpret its sources and migration processes. Understanding how Cd fractionates during sorption to soil minerals, therefore, provides necessary data to open the isotope fractionation black box of liquid-solid phase partition of Cd. In this study, we explored isotopic fractionation characteristics during Cd sorption to typical soil minerals. Distinct Cd isotope fractionation was observed during sorption, including goethite ( ∆ 114 / 110 Cd solid − solution = − 0.51 ∼ − 0.47 ‰ ), montmorillonite ( − 0.34 ∼ − 0.32 ‰ ), quartz ( − 0.34 ∼ − 0.30 ‰ ), gibbsite ( − 0.29 ∼ − 0.25 ‰ ), and kaolinite ( − 0.09 ∼ − 0.07 ‰ ), where lighter isotopes tended to be preferentially sorbed to the solid phase in a reversible manner. We've also conducted a field survey in a historical flooding-affected region to explore Cd isotopic compositions of soil samples adjacent to a polluted creek. Distinct isotopic signatures for surficial soils and deep soils were observed, which was depicted by a binary mixing mode. Leaching of Cd from mine tailings to the creek, as well as its re-adsorption to soil during historical flooding events both led to preferential enrichment of light isotopes in the solid phase, which was consistent with findings from lab sorption experiments. Mineralogical analyses including EPMA, TOF-SIMS, Mössbauer spectra, XRD, and chemical extraction tests, were applied to unveil how Cd was bound to soil minerals at field. Possible linkage between lab and field data were discussed on the basis of these findings. Results from this study are encouraging for future application of Cd isotopes for source tracing.

Hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) is an environmentally benign adhesive which is typically processed without solvent in industries. However, casting solution method is commonly used for experimental purposes in the lab for convenience. Therefore, seven types of solvent with different polarities, including toluene as the most commonly used solvent, were investigated in this work to study the feasibilities. Quick bond strength and holding power were tested with different types of solvents and different adhesive weight percent in the prepared solutions. Through viscosity measurement, thermal analysis, and compositional analysis, the correlation between the chosen solvents and adhesive performance was further explored. It was found that the differences in the obtained bond strength of HMPSA treated with a variety of solvents were due to physical reasons instead of chemical reactions, and a solvent with similar polarity to toluene (e.g., tetrachloride, octane) should be considered as an option because a similar polymer chain relaxation could be maintained as the original HMPSA without solvent treatment. In this study, the mechanism of choosing toluene as common solvent for HMPSA testing was analyzed, and the feasibility of optional solvents was discussed.Keywords:hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive;solution casting;bond strength;solvent polarity

Composite groundwater contaminants at petrochemical sites were remediated via lab-scale PRBs. • Efficient oxidative removal of petrochemical hydrocarbons was achieved through enhanced Fenton-like reactions. • Metal ions and chlorinated hydrocarbons were removed via direct reduction with high electron transfer efficiency. • A sequential reduction-oxidation coupling strategy achieved complete mineralization of chlorinated nitroaromatic compounds. Petrochemical-contaminated sites are commonly characterized by complex mixtures of pollutants rather than a single target compound. However, these co-existing contaminants often differ substantially in reactivity and may therefore require distinct remediation pathways, which remains insufficiently addressed in conventional PRB design. In this study, we employed oxalate-modified ZVI (Ox-ZVI) as the PRB filler. By classifying and treating the typical composite contaminants at petrochemical sites according to their chemical properties, efficient and stable degradation of composite pollutants was achieved through laboratory column experiments. For typical composite pollutants including petroleum hydrocarbons, trichloroethylene and toluene, we applied a Fenton-like oxidation method and demonstrated the superior hydrogen peroxide activation capability and oxidative removal efficiency of Ox-ZVI. Regarding reducible pollutants containing metal ions and chlorinated hydrocarbons, we revealed a direct reductive removal mechanism and highlighted the high electron transfer efficiency of the iron core, while surface FeC 2 O 4 functioned as strong adsorption sites. Building on these findings, a sequential reduction-oxidation coupling strategy was further developed, which achieved efficient mineralization of chlorinated nitroaromatic compounds. During the 12-day continuous PRB operation, the Ox-ZVI system demonstrated stable performance and consistently outperformed conventional ZVI. This work offers a versatile and targeted technical pathway for the efficient remediation of complex petrochemical-contaminated sites. By classifying and treating typical composite contaminants at petrochemical sites, we achieved efficient and stable remediation of groundwater through laboratory PRB system filled with oxalate-modified ZVI. Chloronitrobenzenes (CNBs) are typical refractory aromatic pollutants. The reduction products of CNBs often possess higher toxicity, and the electron-withdrawing substituent groups are detrimental to the ring-opening during the oxidation treatment, leading to ineffective removal of CNBs by either reduction or oxidation technology. Herein we demonstrate a controllable reduction-oxidation coupling (ROC) process composed of zero-valent iron (ZVI) and H 2 O 2 for the effective removal of CNBs from both water and soil. In water, ZVI first reduced p-CNB into 4-chloronitrosobenzene and 4-chloroaniline intermediates, which were then suffered from the subsequent oxidative ring-opening by ·OH generated from the reaction between Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 . By controlling the addition time of H 2 O 2 , the final mineralization rate of p-CNB reached 6.6 × 10 −1 h −1 , about 74 times that of oxidation alone (9.0 × 10 −3 h −1 ). More importantly, this controllable ROC process was also applicable for the site remediation of CNBs contaminated soil by either ex-situ treatment or in-situ injection, and, respectively decreased the concentrations of p-CNB, m-CNB, and o-CNB from 1105, 980, and 94 mg/kg to 3, 1, and < 1mg/kg, meeting the remediation goals (p-CNB: < 32.35 mg/kg, o-CNB and m-CNB: < 1.98 mg/kg). These laboratory and field trial results reveal that this controllable ROC strategy is very promising for the treatment of electron-withdrawing groups substituted aromatic contaminates.

Herein, micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) assisted ozonation process (O 3 /MNBs) was developed to enhance interfacial reactions for pollutant degradation . Notably, the removal of organic contaminants in O 3 /MNBs system was ultrafast over a wide pH range, much faster than that of macrobubbles ozonation process (O 3 /MaBs). Experimental observations suggested that MNBs can effectively accelerate O 3 interfacial mass transfer and enrich abundant OH − from a bulk solution, thus inducing high concentrations of O 3 and hyperaccumulation of OH − ions at gas-liquid interface. These interfacial characteristics of MNBs resulted in formation of a special interfacial reaction field, in which high concentration of O 3 can be quickly activated by hyperaccumulated OH − ions along with assistance of energy released by MNBs collapse, ultimately boosting •OOH generation significantly. In addition, •OOH/•O 2 - performed as critical intermediates for the formation of •OH in O 3 /MNBs process. O 3 /MNBs system demonstrated favorable and steady performance during long-term advanced treatment of industrial wastewater (∼7 m 3 /h) with significantly lower ΔO 3 /ΔCOD (1.41) than O 3 /MaBs system (2.69). The pilot-scale demonstration of O 3 /MNBs efficiently degraded all four categories of organic contaminants according to EEM fluorescence spectra. The study demonstrated an environmentally-benign technology for effective treatment of industrial wastewater.

In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) method was introduced into a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μ-PAD), and thus, a truly low-cost, simple, portable, and disposable microfluidic PEC origami device (μ-PECOD) with an internal chemiluminescence light source and external digital multimeter (DMM) was demonstrated. The PEC responses of this μ-PECOD were investigated, and the enhancements of photocurrents in μ-PECOD were observed under both external and internal light sources compared with that on a traditional flat electrode counterpart. As a further amplification of the generated photocurrents, an all-solid-state paper supercapacitor was constructed and integrated into the μ-PECOD to collect and store the generated photocurrents. The stored electrical energy could be released instantaneously through the DMM to obtain an amplified (∼13-fold) and DMM-detectable current as well as a higher sensitivity than the direct photocurrent measurement, allowing the expensive and sophisticated electrochemical workstation or lock-in amplifier to be abandoned. As a model, sandwich adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding aptamers were taken as molecular reorganization elements on this μ-PECOD for the sensitive determination of ATP in human serum samples in the linear range from 1.0 pM to 1.0 nM with a detection limit of 0.2 pM. The specificity, reproducibility, and stability of this μ-PECOD were also investigated.

Downward solar evaporation with multistage configurations is a promising off-grid solution for high-efficiency potable water production. However, a major, yet often overlooked, barrier to practical application is the significant, unquantified performance gap between laboratory benchmarks and field operation, arising from the complex environmental factors. To diagnose this gap, this work first introduces the Environmental Robustness Index (ERI), the ratio of field-to-lab normalized water productivity ( P’ ), as an essential metric. A comprehensive framework is then developed to precisely quantify the effect of key environmental factors, including wind, sky cooling, and ambient temperature, on the ERI. Guided by the framework, we present the spectrally selective air lock strategy as a universal principle to suppress environmental heat losses and improve ERIs. Implementing this strategy significantly enhances downward solar evaporator’s ERIs from 0.55 to 0.98, effectively closing the gap. This study establishes a framework for solar evaporation to move beyond reporting P’ lab alone and utilize ( P’ lab , ERI) as the dual metrics for advancing real-world applicability.

Chemical production requires the rapid and highly sensitive detection of trace volatile substances. Although the commonly used multichannel combined detection methods are quantitatively accurate, they require the joint operation of multiple devices and are unsuitable for on-site detection. Fluorescence detection technology has attracted considerable interest in the sensing field owing to its high sensitivity, low cost, and multicolor changes, although cost reduction requires the preparation of portable and sensitive on-site detection materials. In this paper, single-wavelength-excited complexes are integrated into a rare-earth organic–inorganic hybrid thin film that senses and identifies multiple target analytes. The volatilization characteristics of the gas generated during production were simulated on five common acidic and amine volatile substances as target compounds, verifying the detection ability of the material. By virtue of their different quenching mechanisms—energy competition, hydrogen bonding, and energy resonance—the channels produce different responses to each volatile substance, causing changes in the fluorescence color. As the detected substances generate different fluorescence-change processes and final colors, a change path similar to a fluorescence fingerprint is formed, enabling qualitative and quantitative analyses. Exploiting the flexibility of the thin film and its responses to different target substances, a system that encrypts and decrypts information was then designed. The proposed lab-on hybrid material simplifies the multitarget identification process and has substantial potential for various sensing applications.

Graphical A “lab-on-a-nanoparticle” approach for the detection and discrimination of antibiotics has been developed. The sensing platform is designed on the basis of the different channel's fluorescence recoveries of full-color emissive carbon dots and metal ion ensembles with the addition of antibiotics. Moreover, the proposed method can be successfully employed for the quantitative identification of antibiotic residues in real food samples. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have received considerable attention in recent years due to their superior optical properties. To take further advantages of these unique features, herein, a CDs-based “lab-on-a-nanoparticle” approach for the detection and discrimination of antibiotics is developed. The sensing platform was designed based on the different channel's fluorescence recoveries or further quenching of the full-color emissive CDs (F-CDs) and metal ion ensembles upon the addition of antibiotics. The F-CDs exhibited unusually comparable emission intensity nearly across the entire visible spectrum even as the excitation wavelength is shifted, making it very suitable for the construction of multi-channel sensing systems. The sensing platform was fabricated on the basis of the competing interaction of metal ions with the F-CDs and antibiotics. Three metal ions (i.e., Cu 2+ , Ce 3+ and Eu 3+ ) can efficiently quench the fluorescence of the F-CDs. Upon the addition of antibiotics, the fluorescent intensities either recovered at different emission wavelengths or were further quenched to various degrees. The fluorescence response patterns at different emission wavelength were characteristic for each antibiotic and can be quantitatively differentiated by standard statistical methods (e.g., hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis). Moreover, as an example, the proposed method was applied for quantitative detection of oxytetracycline with a limit of detection to be 0.06 μ m . Finally, the sensing system was successfully employed for residual antibiotics detection and identification in real food samples.

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) chemisorption employing biphasic solvents is recognized as a method with substantial application potential. Nevertheless, under conditions of burning high-sulfur fuels or rapid load changes, SO 2 in the flue gas poses challenges to the stability and economic operation of biphasic CO 2 capture system. To tackle this, the impact of residual SO 2 on CO 2 capture performance was systematically investigated in a lab‑scale continuous absorption–desorption set-up using novel biphasic solvent. The system achieved steady CO 2 capture efficiencies of 97.8 % and 94.8 % over 20 days without SO 2 . In the presence of SO 2 , CO 2 capture efficiency declined from >90 % in the first 10 days to below 80 % after 13 days and 70 % after 17 days, owing to irreversible reactions between SO 2 and amine, pH drop, and amine loss. CO 2 loading and circulation capacity similarly decreased, while CO 2 desorption duty rose from 2.51 to over 5.0 GJ/t CO 2 , driven by increased solvent flow and amine degradation catalyzed by SO 4 2− . DFT calculations indicated that the dissolution of SO 2 formed SO 3 2− /SO 4 2− , which enhanced the hydration of CO 2 . However, SO 2 preferentially reacted with amines, acidifying the interface and hindering CO 2 absorption. Quantitative 13 C NMR indicated that the oxyanion produced by the dissolution of SO 2 reduced the concentrations of bicarbonates and carbonates in the rich phase. A mechanistic model based on film theory was proposed, delineating gas‑phase diffusion, liquid‑phase competition, and catalytic promotion by oxyanions. These findings guided recommendations for pretreatment and solvent‑management strategies to ensure stable biphasic CO 2 capture under real flue gas conditions.

Determining the nitrate levels is critical for water quality monitoring, and traditional methods are limited by high toxicity and low detection efficiency. Here, rapid nitrate determination was realized using a portable device based on innovative three-dimensional double microstructured assisted reactors (DMARs). On-chip nitrate reduction and chromogenic reaction were conducted in the DMARs, and the reaction products then flowed into a PMMA optical detection chip for absorbance measurement. A significant enhancement of reaction rate and efficiency was observed in the DMARs due to their sizeable surface-area-to-volume ratios and hydrodynamics in the microchannels. The highest reduction ratio of 94.8% was realized by optimizing experimental parameters, which is greatly improved compared to conventional zinc–cadmium based approaches. Besides, modular optical detection improves the reliability of the portable device, and a smartphone was used to achieve a portable and convenient nitrate analysis. Different water samples were successfully analysed using the portable device based on DMARs. The results demonstrated that the device features fast detection (115 s per sample), low reagent consumptions (26.8 μL per sample), particularly low consumptions of toxic reagents (0.38 μL per sample), good reproducibility and low relative standard deviations (RSDs, 0.5–1.38%). Predictably, the portable lab-on-chip device based on microstructured assisted reactors will find more applications in the field of water quality monitoring in the near future.
