Lithium (Li) metal plays an indispensable role in Li-S batteries , but its fast degradation seriously impedes the practical application of Li-S batteries. Here, an ion-conductive LAGP-based composite protective layer (CPL) consisting of lithium aluminum germanium phosphate (Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 ) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is prepared on Li metal anode via a facile casting method. In the presence of LAGP, the negative effect of CPL on the diffusion of Li + is minimized. Hence, it can not only effectively resist corrosive action of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) on Li metal anode, but also reduce interfacial polarization and restrain dendritic Li growth. The protected Li anode exhibits exceptional cycling stability and low voltage polarization (∼30 mV at 0.5 mA cm −2 ) for 300 h. The electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries with protected Li anode is also greatly enhanced. The discharge specific capacity of 832.1 mAh g −1 and an average coulombic efficiency of 92% are obtained for up to 100 cycles at 0.5 C in LiNO 3 -free electrolyte. Additionally, the rate capability of Li-S batteries is significantly improved, delivering a reversible capacity of 565 mAh g −1 at 4 C. Our results also indicate this protection strategy can be extended to the Li-S pouch cells.

Oxide-based solid-state batteries (OSSB) have gained significant attention due to their inherent high safety and air stability. However, application of OSSB is limited by thick electrolytes and large interfacial resistance generated by side reactions. This work employs a solvent free process to prepare a thin Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) film with a thickness of 90 μm, achieving a high ionic conductivity of 0.76 mS cm −1 at room temperature. Such a high ionic conductivity originates from the filling of LAGP particles with high-conductive secondary phase, thereby forming fast interfacial conduction paths. Coupled with Li metal anode and LiFe 0.4 Mn 0.6 PO 4 (LFMP) cathode (cut-off voltage of 4.3 V), the OSSB delivers a discharge capacity of 155 mAh g −1 . Our thin-film LAGP electrolyte shows an opportunity to overcome the two obstacles, and the development of high safety OSSB becomes possible in the future.

In all-solid-state batteries , the rigid point contact between the solid electrolyte and electrode results in poor cell interface wettability and generates large interfacial impedance, which hinders the application of solid-state batteries. To enhance ionic conductivity and interfacial wettability of NASICON-structured solid-state electrolyte Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP), microporous LAGP with a hexagonal surface pattern is prepared using femtosecond laser followed by filling an ionic liquid electrolyte to form a solid-liquid composite electrolyte (HPL&IL). The effect of surface textures on the electrolyte-electrode interface is investigated. Experimental results demonstrate that cycling stability for Li|HPL&IL|Li cells can reach up to 350 h at a constant current density of 0.05 mA cm −2 at room temperature, and hexagonal surface textures promote uniform interfacial film formation while increasing contact area between electrode and electrolyte, providing more space for charge transfer at the interface.

The fossil fuel crisis and global warming are becoming more and more severe in this century, while the exploration of human survival on Mars is being pushed forward steadily. Hence, it is meaningful to effectively utilize CO2, the main greenhouse gas and a major component of the Martian atmosphere. Due to their high capacity and ability to capture CO2, Li–CO2 batteries have received much attention. However, there are problems that still need to be solved relating to Li–CO2 batteries, including the instability of the electrolyte and the non-negligible polarization caused by the formation and decomposition of Li2CO3. To address these issues, an all-solid-state Li–CO2 battery, which uses RuO2 nanoparticles combined with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as the cathode material and a sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type ceramic solid electrolyte, Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP), has been developed and it operates over a broad temperature range. Under a pure CO2 atmosphere, this well-designed battery shows a discharge capacity of 2499 mA h g−1 and a charge capacity of 2137 mA h g−1 in the first cycle at 60 °C, and stable cycling performance over 30 cycles under a capacity limitation of 500 mA h g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1. This result enhances the possibility of the utilization of the Li–CO2 battery in the future.

Mn-based disordered rock-salt (DRX) cathode materials offer high theoretical capacities and operating voltages, rendering them promising candidates for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, severe interfacial reactions between Mn-based DRX cathodes and the electrolyte can induce surface degradation and a pronounced increase in interfacial impedance. In this study, a LAGP glass ceramic coating layer was introduced onto the surface of Li1.2Cr0.3Ti0.3Mn0.3O1.9F0.1(LCTMOF) particles to minimize direct contact between the active material and the electrolyte, thereby enhancing the capacity retention over 50 cycles. It delivered an initial discharge capacity of 278.7 mAh g−1and retained 227.3 mAh g−1after 50 cycles. Relative to the pristine uncoated cathode, the LAGP glass ceramic coating material achieved a capacity retention of 81.5% together with improved rate performance, retaining a high specific capacity of 184.5 mAh g−1at a current density of 500 mA g−1. Surface XPS analysis, together with the electrochemical results, suggests that the LAGP glass ceramic coating mitigates cathode interfacial degradation under the investigated cycling conditions.

A ceramic solid electrolyte of Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP) with high ionic conductivity (4.28 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 30 °C) and low activation energy (0.25 eV) is prepared by a three-step method, and the interfacial properties of the ceramic solid electrolyte are further modified by an in-situ polymerization strategy with the formation of a gel-polymer electrolyte with the thickness of 8.85 μm on the surface of LAGP. The presence of the gel-polymer electrolyte on the surface of LAGP inhibits the side reactions and the growth of lithium dendrites, as evidenced by the stable cycling of the lithium symmetric cells with the modified LAGP solid electrolyte for 1000 h at 25 °C. In addition, the high ionic conductivity and the stable interface of the modified LAGP solid electrolyte enable the solid-state lithium battery with a LiFePO 4 cathode, exhibiting superior electrochemical performances which can run stably at 25 °C with initial discharge specific capacity of 159.8 mAh g −1 at 0.1C.

It is still a great challenge to fabricate dense solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity using a facile and low-cost method for all solid-state rechargeable battery. In this context, a cold sintering process (CSP) is employed to prepare the ceramic solid electrolytes at an extremely low temperature of 120 °C, significantly suppressing the Li loss and impurity formation by traditionally high-temperature sintering. The low temperature prepared Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (LAGP)-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) composite electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 6.35 × 10 −5 S/cm, low activation energy of 0.26 eV and high relative densities of 90%. The Li | CSP LAGP-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) | Li symmetric cell delivers a cycling time retention of over 350 h with a stabilized voltage overpotential at a current density of 0.2 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, the high Coulombic efficiency of 99.97% and capacity retention of 150 mAh/g are achieved after 130 cycles at 0.1C in Li | CSP LAGP-LiClO 4 (10.0 wt%) | LiFePO 4 solid cells. These good electrochemical performances are originated from the well-constructed solid electrolyte-electrode interfaces, where the electrochemically active interface demonstrates the powerful self-stabilization function to maintain the tight interface connection as well as the continuous Li ion transport. The CSP method sheds new light on the fabrication of solid electrolytes at a low temperature and inexpensive way, hence provides a rewarding avenue to fabricate better solid-state batteries and other electrochemical devices .

Oxide electrolyte Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO4) 3 (LAGP) has attracted much attention due to their potential and are considered ideal electrolytes for next-generation high-energy-density solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, their application is still limited by problems such as poor solid-solid interface contact, high interface resistance, lithium dendrite growth, and embrittlement during operation. To address these issues, our work propose a synergistic strategy to prepare a novel flexible quasi-solid-state ceramic-polymer electrolyte. This electrolyte is composed of [N1,4,4,4]TFSI ionic liquid (IL), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), LiTFSI salt, and LAGP, which significantly improves the ionic conductivity and cycle stability of the ceramic-polymer electrolyte battery. The prepared LAGP/PVDF composite electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity as high as 1.16 × 10 −3 S cm −1 . LAGP nanoparticles have the dual function than not only can reduce the crystallinity of the polymer matrix; but also act as lithium-ion conductors to enhance lithium-ion transport capabilities. Furthermore, the Li/LiFeO 4 battery based on this ceramic-polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent interfacial compatibility and dendrite-free characteristics, with significantly enhanced cycle stability, capable of stable operation exceeding 300 cycles. This work demonstrates the feasibility of the PVDF/LAGP ceramic-polymer electrolyte and its industrial application prospects in solid-state lithium metal batteries.

In this work, a hierarchical PVDF-HFP gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) membrane is prepared intentionally and placed between the solid electrolyte and the electrodes. The fabricated LiFePO4/GPE/LAGP/GPE/Li hybrid solid-state cell displays superior rate performance and capacity retention. After 300 cycles at 0.5 C, negligible degradation can be observed, and the specific capacity remains as high as 145.6 mA h/g at room temperature. The excellent battery performance is ascribed to the significantly improved interfacial stability of the sandwich-like hybrid electrolyte and the remarkably enhanced charge transfer kinetics across the interface due to the flexibility of GPE.

Composite solid electrolytes hold the promise to enable all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries to be practicable. One critical issue is the construction of uniform porous ceramic framework. The work proposed an innovative freeze casting-based technology to construct porous ceramic framework of Li 1+ x Al x Ge 2− x (PO4) 3 (LAGP), which was further composited with polymeric electrolytes to assemble full cells. The pore structure of the ceramic framework was effectively tuned by the ratio of mixed water-ethanol solvents, which could offset the volume expansion of water during freeze casting, benefit powder compact and sintering, and thus improved the quality of the composite solid electrolytes. The unique solvent composition design strategy provided ample opportunity for microstructural modification and the suppression of short-circuiting lithium dendrites , as demonstrated by the improvement of critical current density and phase field modeling. This work offers new perspectives on creating different pore structure free of residual stress or volume expansion once freeze casting technique is adopted.
