Fogging on agricultural greenhouse covering films reduces solar transmission, resulting in insufficient photosynthetically active radiation and hindering crop growth. In this study, a long-acting antifogging composite film was developed by incorporating diatomite (DE) and sorbitan tristearate (STS) into low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The introduction of STS enabled the surface of LDPE to undergo a transition from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. The film has the ability of preventing fogging and increasing solar irradiation inside the greenhouse by 15%. On the 30th day of the hot fog test, the failure area of the film was only 20%, and the introduction of DE reduced the diffusion coefficient of STS from 0.2 to 0.06 cm 2 min −1 . Rheological properties and crystallinity testing revealed the interaction mechanism between STS and LDPE molecules. Greenhouse cultivation experiments showed that the chlorophyll content of Chinese cabbage ( Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis ) and spinach ( Spinacia oleracea ) grown under the antifogging film increased by 24% and 30%, respectively. This antifogging film can be produced on a large scale using the casting method and offers significant potential for improving the quality of greenhouse crops.

Both MMT synthesized by hydrothermal method (Fe-OMMT) and MMT prepared by modifying MMT using Fe 3+ (Fe-MMT) were used to prepare flame-retardant low-density polyethylene (FR-LDPE) together with an intumescent flame retardant (IFR). The effects of two types of MMTs on the flame retardation of FR-LDPE were investigated by different measurements. Combustion tests showed that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of LDPE/IFR28/Fe-MMT2 was increased to 34.6 from 29 of LDPE/IFR30, and the UL-94 rating of the former reached V-2 from no rating of the latter. Cone calorimeter (CC) test demonstrated that both Fe-OMMT and Fe-MMT improved the combustion behaviors of LDPE/IFR at about 2 wt%. LDPE/IFR/Fe-MMT had a lower heat release rate (HRR), lower total heat release (THR) and more residues than LDPE/IFR/Fe-OMMT at the same loading in the range from 0.5 to 3 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that both Fe-MMT and Fe-OMMT could promote the formation of continuous and compact intumescent char layer in LDPE/IFR. Both CC and UL-94 tests vitrified that Fe-MMT had better contribution to IFR in fire resistance test. Thermogravimatric (TG) and Mossbauer spectrum etc. revealed that the different efficiency of Fe-OMMT and Fe-MMT should mainly be resulting from the structure difference between Fe-MMT and Fe-OMMT, in which the essential difference might be the different existing state of Fe in two types of MMTs.

Co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic enables simultaneous production of biochar, bio-oil, and gaseous products and also offers a pathway for waste recycling and valorization. This research investigates the synergistic effects of co-pyrolysis of cellulose and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) by TG-FTIR and a fixed bed reactor. Kinetic analyses by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) models showed that the average activation energy ( E a ) for pyrolysis of cellulose and LDPE individually was 184.1 and 267.4 kJ/mol, respectively, whereas that of 1:1 cellulose/LDPE mixture decreased to 150.4 kJ/mol. Pyrolysis experiment showed that co-pyrolysis suppressed biochar formation while enhancing yields of bio-oil and gaseous products. Co-pyrolysis enriched carbon and removed oxygen in biochar, resulting in maximum graphitization degree and higher heating value (HHV) of 31.51 MJ/kg at 700 °C. Additionally, co-pyrolysis decreased the relative content of light oxygenated compounds in bio-oil. The inhibitory effect of co-pyrolysis on aldehydes, ketones, and acids was maximum at 600 °C. Co-pyrolysis enhanced CH 4 and H 2 formation and suppressed CO 2 and CO. At 700 °C, CH 4 and H 2 proportions peaked to 19.3 vol% and 13.1 vol%, respectively, during co-pyrolysis. This research provides fundamental insights into the synergistic mechanisms of biomass and plastic co-pyrolysis for polygeneration.

The presence of plastics in the environment, particularly in micro and nano forms, poses significant environmental and health risks. This study investigated Fenton-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including Fenton, electro-Fenton and Fered-Fenton, for removing two common microplastics: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The experiments were conducted at room temperature and a pH of 3, under the conditions of 0.1 g of microplastics, 100 mL of water, 1.5 mL of H 2 O 2 and 1.5 mL of Fe 2+ (concentration: 0.2 M), with a constant voltage of 10 kV and a current of 5 mA, conducting four cycles lasting 5 h. The results indicate that the Fered-Fenton process demonstrated the highest removal rates, achieving 30.6% for PVC and 27.4% for LDPE compared to 22.78% and 19.9% for the Fenton process and 25.4% and 22.4% for the electro-Fenton process. These findings indicate higher removal percentages for PVC and LDPE compared to other studies.

The compatibility of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) during melt-blending spinning plays a crucial role in ensuring good spinnability, while the drawing and fiber-splitting processes are key to forming ultrafine fibers. This study systematically investigates the Flory–Huggins interaction parameters between LDPE and PA6, as well as the fiber-splitting and drawing behaviors of unfigured sea–island composite fibers, with a focus on compatibility and fabrication techniques. The results reveal that the Flory–Huggins interaction parameters for LDPE and PA6 at different blend ratios are 0.0517 ± 0.0014, significantly exceeding the critical interaction threshold of 0.0091, indicating complete incompatibility between the two polymers. Through an in-depth analysis of the drawing process, it was found that after the drawing ratio of 4, the fiber fineness reached 3.7 dtex, with a fiber orientation of 78%, a breaking strength of 5.56 cN/dtex, and a breaking elongation of 41%. During the fiber-splitting process of LDPE/PA6 sea–island composite fibers, the optimal conditions were determined to be a splitting temperature of 90 °C, a splitting time of 60 min, and a degradation rate of 43%. Under these conditions, the composite fiber diameter significantly decreased from 27.04 μm to 0.85 μm. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing the manufacturing process and enhancing the performance of LDPE/PA6 composite fibers.

The diffusion of five flavor organic molecules, including D-limonene, myrcene, ethyl hexanoate, 2-nonanone, and linalool in low density polyethylene (LDPE) film were investigated by combined experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies. The diffusion coefficients derived from the prediction model, experimental determination, and MD simulation were compared, and the related microscopic diffusion mechanism was investigated. The effects of the presence of the flavor organic molecules on the diffusion of O2and H2O in polyethylene (PE) were also studied by MD simulation. Results show that: The diffusion of five flavor molecules in LDPE is well followed to Fick’s second law by the immersion experiment; MD simulation indicates the dual mode diffusion mechanism of the flavor molecules is in LDPE; the diffusion coefficients from MD simulation are close to those from the experimental determination, but are slightly larger than those values; the presence of the flavor organic molecules hinders the diffusion of O2and H2O, which can be well explained from the fraction of free volume (FFV) and interaction energy calculation results derived from MD simulation. Keywords:flavor organic molecules;LDPE film;molecular dynamics simulation;diffusion

Photocatalytically degradable plastics (PDP) are promising in mitigating plastic pollution due to their high degradability. Nevertheless, the unclear impact of environmental conditions on properties of debris for PDP and the knowledge gap in the mechanism from the perspective of photogenerated reactive species’ function hinder PDP's application. Here, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) containing TiO 2 (LDPE-TiO 2 ) was selected as representative PDP. The photocatalytic degradation performance and mechanism of LDPE-TiO 2 in water without NaCl, water with NaCl, and air were studied. Compared with water, the air resulted in a higher carbonyl index and higher molecular weight of debris from LDPE-TiO 2 whether the irradiation time was the same (120 h) or the mass loss of LDPE-TiO 2 was the same (68 ± 2%). Chloride ions in water conditions resulted in C Cl bond formation in the debris of LDPE-TiO 2 suggesting generation of organochlorine substance. In the air the photogenerated electron ( e − ) contributed to LDPE-TiO 2 film degradation, while in the water e − mainly underwent recombination with the photogenerated hole. In water with Cl − , HO‧ attacked LDPE via reaction with Cl − forming organochlorine substance. The effects of environmental conditions on the properties of debris and the functions of photogenerated reactive species for PDP degradation are reported for the first time in this study. The findings provide scientific support for the development of PDP technology.

Chemical upcycling through catalytic hydrocracking to fuels has potential to mitigate the serious environmental issues caused by plastic waste. Herein, non-noble tungstate-zirconia supported nickel catalyst (Ni/WO x -ZrO 2 ) with tunable Brønsted/Lewis (B/L) ratio was firstly proposed for the hydrocracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which achieves hydrogenation/dehydrogenation on Ni sites and cracking/isomerization on WO x -ZrO 2 , respectively. Excellent 100 % LDPE conversion with 76.9 % liquid yield was achieved, which is comparable to noble Ru-based and Pt-based catalysts. Quantitative linear relationship between B/L ratio and hydrocracking performance was established, and the key to boost performance was keenly controlling the volcanic-shape relationship between surface WO x density and B/L ratio of catalyst. Moderate WO x surface density with higher B/L ratio enhances LDPE hydrocracking, and inhibits the hydrogenation of the primary products. However, excessive WO x polymerized and formed WO 3 crystals, compensating acid sites and inhibiting LDPE hydrocracking. This work is of prime scientific and industrial significance to the rational design of catalysts for industrial plastic hydrocracking.

The organic electric-field regulator enables the polymer to have nonlinear conductivity and to self-regulate electric field. However, it may migrate out from the polymer matrix due to its small molecular weight, causing nonreversible damage to the electrical performance of the composite. In this work, to improve the long-term stability, the allyloxy polyethylene glycol (APEG) with electron-donating groups was grafted onto the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) chains by chemical grafting method. The composites were mainly characterized by weight loss rate, breakdown strength, conductivity, space charge distribution, and surface potential decay. In addition, the quantum chemical calculations were carried out on APEG and grafting APEG/LDPE composites. The results show that grafting APEG on LDPE macromolecules not only improves the long-term stability but also enhances the nonlinear conductivity, which is attributed to the increase in the electrostatic potential of electron-donating groups of APEG. The nonlinear conductivity helps homogenize the electric field distribution in polymer composites and helps dissipate the surface charges. This work lays a foundation for the improvement of all-organic nonlinear dielectrics. Highlights Grafting APEG onto LDPE macromolecules improves the stability. Grafting APEG reduces conductivity of LDPE under low electric field. Grafting APEG helps enhance the nonlinear conductivity. Grafting APEG enables LDPE to have a more uniform electric field.

The rapid development of 5th generation communication and wearable electronic devices has increased the demand for lightweight and flexible materials with excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and piezoresistive sensing characteristics. Herein, cold/hot pressing was combined with supercritical CO 2 foaming to prepare segregated carbon nanotube (CNT)/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sheets and related foams, exhibiting superior sensitivity and EMI shielding effectiveness (SE). Benefiting from the segregated distribution of CNT, CNT/EVA/LDPE sheets exhibited excellent conductivity of 0.38 S cm −1 . The composite foam with 6 phr CNT achieved a maximum absolute EMI SE of 113 dB (g/cm 2 ) −1 in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) while maintaining high sensitivity (GF = 4.4), perfectly balancing piezoresistive sensing and EMI shielding performance. Apart from pure EVA/LDPE, the mechanism for EMI shielding in CNT/EVA/LDPE sheets was primarily based on reflection, while that of segregated CNT/EVA/LDPE foam was chiefly ascribed to absorption. Moreover, the segregated CNT/EVA/LDPE foam could accurately detect human motion, further demonstrating their practical application potential. This study provides new insights into the development of lightweight, multifunctional materials for EMI shielding and advances next-generation functional materials for flexible electronics and wearable devices. Highlights A composite that integrates mechanical, conductive, EMI shielding and sensing. S/C6-F shows excellent conductivity (0.01 S cm −1 ) and SSE/t (113 dB cm 2 g −1 ). Its porous structure shifts EMI shielding from reflection to absorption. A high gauge factor of 4.4 enables S/C6-F to accurately detect human motion. S/C6-F achieves 7 MPa stress at 60% strain, indicating mechanical stability.

A quantitative structure-property relationship model linking the LDPE molecular chain structural parameters and its crosslinking performance plays a pivotal role in the development of LDPE base resins for ultra-high voltage cables. Based on the LDPE crosslinking mechanisms and the matching rules between free radicals and LDPE molecular chains, this work established a predictive model correlating LDPE molecular chain structure, dicumyl peroxide (DCP) dosage, and gel properties (including gel content and crosslink density). The model's accuracy and universality were rigorously validated using experimental data and relevant literature. Furthermore, this study assessed the practical utility of the model, and established the optimization workflow for crosslinking formulation design and molecular chain structure refinement. Selected optimization results are exemplified, and the theoretical explanation for the superior scorch resistance of narrow molecular weight distribution LDPE is given. This work will offer critical theoretical guidance for developing next-generation insulating materials for ultra-high voltage cables.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is an excellent insulating material that ensures the safe and reliable operation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. The insulation properties of LDPE can be improved by doping with voltage stabilizers. Due to its electron-withdrawing property, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) has the potential to be used as a voltage stabilizer to improve the DC insulation performance of LDPE, especially the high temperature insulation performance of cable insulation. Therefore, the impact of PCBM on carrier trap characteristics and micro charge transport at high temperatures and high fields requires further study. LDPE is used as the matrix material to prepare composites with concentrations of 0.5 and 1 wt%. The experimental results show that the Weibull characteristic breakdown strength can be increased by 10.5 % and the DC electrical conductivity can be reduced by 73.6 % at 90 °C, when the PCBM doping concentration is 0.5 wt%. These results can be explained by trap characteristics and molecular chain displacement. It reveals that the introduction of PCBM can effectively increase the trap density, which can capture more charge carriers, resulting in a decrease in carrier mobility and electrical conductivity. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that owing to the high electron affinity and low ionization potential of PCBM, it is more prone to attracting and capturing electrons, thereby efficiently absorbing high-energy electron energy. Moreover, PCBM makes the amorphous region more tightly ordered, which manifests as an improvement in crystallinity. It also enhances the friction coefficient of the molecular chain and suppresses the molecular chain displacement in LDPE, which is verified by charge transport and molecular displacement modulated model simulations. This study provides a new method for improving the properties of cable insulation materials.
