A halogen-free, formaldehyde-free, efficient, durable, N P flame retardant, the ammonium salt of meglumine phosphoric ester acid (ASMPEA), was prepared. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and 31 P NMR) results indicated that ASMPEA was grafted onto cotton fibers by P-O-C covalent bonds. The LOI value of 30 wt% ASMPEA-treated cotton fabric was 40.2%, and after 50 laundering cycles (LCs), the LOI value decreased to 29.4%, indicating that the cotton fibers treated with ASMPEA were endowed with excellent durable flame retardancy. Thermogravimetry (TG), cone calorimetry, and vertical flammability test results showed that ASMPEA-treated cotton decomposed into phosphoric acid or polyphosphoric acid during combustion, which promoted the thermal degradation and charring of treated cotton fabrics and hindered the spread of flames. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) verified that ASMPEA infiltrated the cotton fiber without obviously affecting its surface morphology or crystal structure; however, the mechanical properties of the treated cotton fabric decreased slightly. These results confirm that ASMPEA achieved excellent durable flame retardancy when used to coat cotton fabric.

High-impact polystyrene is a widely-used construction material due to its superior comprehensive performance, but its susceptibility to fire can lead to the production of toxic and harmful gases. To address this issue, a novel, environmentally-friendly microencapsulated nitrogen‑phosphorus‑silicon flame retardant for high-impact polystyrene was prepared in this study. SiO 2 , produced by the hydrolysis condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate , was used as the wall material, while melamine cyanurate was used as the core material. The microencapsulated nitrogen‑phosphorus‑silicon flame retardant was compounded with high-impact polystyrene and aluminum hypophosphite , and the composites were evaluated for their performance in terms of fire behavior, thermal stability, and morphology of the resulting carbon residues. When melamine cyanurate@SiO 2 and aluminum hypophosphite were added in a 1:4 ratio, the UL-94 rating of L5 reached V -0, and the LOI value increased to 27.0%. The conical calorimeter test results showed that the peak heat release rate of the L5 composite decreased by 78.7% compared to pure HIPS, and the corresponding total heat release rate decreased by 45.7%. Thermogravimetric analysis results illustrated that the amount of carbon residue increased significantly, from 2.46% to 22.26% of pure high-impact polystyrene. These findings indicate that the prepared microencapsulated nitrogen‑phosphorus‑silicon flame retardant is multifunctional, highly efficient, and can be applied to high-impact polystyrene.

A sulfathiazole derivative with phosphaphenanthrene group (STZ) was successfully synthesized by covalently bonding DOPO and imine intermediate obtained from the condensation of sulfathiazole with p -hydroxybenzaldehyde. Its effect on the thermal, flame-retardant and mechanical properties of epoxy thermosets were comprehensively studied. The presence of STZ decreased the initial degradation temperature and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of epoxy thermoset. STZ significantly improved the flame retardancy and fire safety of epoxy thermoset. With the addition of only 4 wt% STZ, the modified epoxy thermoset achieved an LOI value of 29.1% and V-0 rating in UL-94 test. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) in cone calorimeter test were decreased by 34.4% and 32.1% in comparison with those of pure epoxy thermoset. STZ showed high flame-retardant activity not only by releasing nonflammable gases and phosphorous radicals in the gas phase, but also by promoting the formation of dense and intumescent char layer with honeycomb-like hollow structure inside in the condensed phase. Because of the strong intermolecular action between STZ and epoxy macromolecular chain, the presence of STZ increased the tensile strength , while decreased the elongation at break of epoxy thermoset.

The preparation of bio-based epoxy resin with excellent thermal properties and flame retardant properties from green renewable resources had attracted extensive attention in recent years. Starting from the driving structural properties, the purpose of this study is to prepare multifunctional triglycidylester- diphenolic acid- bio-based epoxy (TDBE) with diphenolic acid (DPA), triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphophenanthrene 10 oxide (DOPO) as raw materials. TDBE/DDM and bisphenol A epoxy resin curing agent (DGEBA/DDM) was prepared with 4,4 '- diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as curing agent. TDBE/DDM has excellent fire safety. LOI value rose from 24.5 to 42.0%, and the UL-94 test level passes V-0 level. In the cone calorimeter test, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) is decreased by 69.3%. Besides, the lap shear TDBE adhesive strength was 42.9 MPa, which increased by 62.5%. This new multifunctional bio-based flame retardant epoxy resin provides a broader application prospect for high-performance materials. Graphical Abstract
