Remarkable phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater by magnetically recyclable La2O2CO3/γ-Fe2O3 nanocomposites

Sujie Shan,Wei Wang,Dongmei Liu,Zhiwei Zhao,Wenxin Shi,Fuyi Cui

Owing to the twin problems of eutrophication and global phosphorus (P) scarcity, the removal and recovery of phosphate from water and wastewater have received increasing attention. Herein, magnetically recyclable La 2 O 2 CO 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 adsorbents were rationally designed by derivation from La/Fe binary metal organic framework (MOF) precursors via calcination treatment. Based upon preliminary screening of as-prepared La 2 O 2 CO 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites with different La-to-Fe molar ratios in terms of phosphate sorption capacity and magnetic property as well as La content, La 2 O 2 CO 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposite with a La-to-Fe molar ratio of 2:1 was selected for further characterization and adsorption performance evaluation. Batch adsorption experiments showed that La 2 O 2 CO 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 (2:1) adsorbent exhibited a remarkable phosphate sorption capacity of 134.82 mg P/g, a fast sorption kinetic, strong selectivity for phosphate in the presence of co-existing anions, and a wide applicable pH range of 3−9. Furthermore, La 2 O 2 CO 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 (2:1) sorbent displayed an excellent sorption performance for low-concentration wastewater, a low dosage of 0.1 g/L was sufficiently enough for reducing P-concentration from 0.5 mg P/L to below 10 μg P/L within 20 min. In a real sewage of 2.68 mg P/L, 0.2 g/L of sorbent could reduce the concentration of phosphate to <0.01 mg P/L within 50 min. Moreover, over 83.1 % of original sorption capacity could be retained after 5 consecutive regeneration cycles, showing great regenerative performance of the adsorbent. These development is expected to be meaningful for practical water purification.

Tuning Pt-Co electronic interaction in PtCo/La2O2CO3 toward enhanced selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Zhiying Qiu,Yu Fang,Ting Xiong,Luna Ruan,Yixuan Wang,Cheng Chen,Junyuan Xu,Chao Liu,Zhiqing Yang,Hengqiang Ye,Lihua Zhu

The selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols is of great industrial significance, yet the development of highly active and stable catalysts remains a substantial challenge. This study employs hydrothermal and sodium borohydride reduction methods to synthesize high-performance PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 catalysts for cinnamaldehyde selective hydrogenation. The electronic interaction between Pt and Co (electrons transferring from Pt to Co) can be precisely tailored by adjusting Pt and Co contents, which effectively modulates activation behavior of H 2 on the catalyst surface. This electronic modulation leads to distinguished catalytic activity, with PtCo/La 2 O 2 CO 3 -3 (Pt-1.75 wt%, Co-0.45 wt%) exhibiting the weakest Pt-Co interaction and thus achieving the excellent catalytic performance (cinnamaldehyde conversion-97.7%, cinnamyl alcohol selectivity-90.7%) under mild conditions (60 °C, 1.5 h, 2.0 MPa H 2 ). This study elucidates the synergistic mechanisms in PtCo bimetallic catalysts and establishes a versatile strategy for designing efficient multifunctional catalytic systems through the integration of bimetallic synergy.

Superior arsenate adsorption and comprehensive investigation of adsorption mechanism on novel Mn-doped La2O2CO3 composites

Jing Su,Tao Lyu,Hao Yi,Lei Bi,Gang Pan

A major challenge for effective decontamination of arsenate from aqueous solution is the development of adsorbent possessing enormous high-active sites with strong affinity to realize both high adsorption capacity and reduction of arsenate down to permissive levels. Here we demonstrate that this challenge may be overcome by doping Mn atoms into La 2 O 2 CO 3 materials. The synthesized material (5.26%-MnL) achieved an arsenate capture ability superior to most other currently-reported adsorbents, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 555.6 mg/g. Additionally, this novel adsorbent could dramatically reduce the concentration of arsenate from 3775 μg/L to less than 4 μg/L, well below the acceptable value for drinking water (10 μg/L). The adsorption capacity of 5.26%-MnL was demonstrated to be >300 mg/g over a wide pH range from 4 to 9 and the efficiency was maintained >85% even after three cycles of adsorption/desorption. Through a series of characterizations, both surface complexation and ion exchange were proved to contribute to arsenate removal at low molar ratios of As(V)/5.26%-MnL while forming LaAsO 4 precipitation played a greater role at higher As(V)/5.26%-MnL ratios. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations suggested that Mn atoms acted as active species by not only increasing lattice defects and adsorption sites, but also by activating La 3+ in La 2 O 2 CO 3 , which lowered the adsorption energy and facilitated arsenate removal. Due to the high affinity and superior adsorption capacity towards arsenate, Mn-doped La 2 O 2 CO 3 has been demonstrated to be a promising prospect for the remediation of arsenate-polluted water.

Outstanding performance of magnetic La2O2CO3/Fe3O4 nanosheets for simultaneous removal of phosphate and arsenate from wastewater

Ding Chen,Chen He,Boxian Ren,Saiyue Yang,Yiman Ma,Zhiguo Lin,Xiangjun Yang

The chemical similarities and co-occurrence of phosphate and arsenate contamination have heightened the focus on their efficient simultaneous removal. In this study, magnetically recoverable La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 nanosheets were synthesized through the calcination of La-Fe binary metal glycolate. Based on magnetic and adsorption properties, La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 nanosheets with a La to Fe molar ratio of 1:1 (La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 -1) were selected for further exploration. Electron microscopy characterization revealed that the nanocomposites consist of stacked La 2 O 2 CO 3 and Fe 3 O 4 nanosheets. The La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 -1 nanocomposites exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities of 114.6 mg P/g and 230.2 mg As/g. Additionally, the material exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics and maintained excellent adsorption performance within a pH range of 3.0 to 9.0, showing significant selectivity for phosphate and arsenate even in the presence of various coexisting ions. Adsorption-desorption cycling tests indicated good potential for recycling. When applied to the spring water of Yangzonghai Lake, the material efficiently reduced the concentrations of phosphate and arsenate from 0.725 mg P/L and 1.380 mg As/L to below 0.020 mg P/L and 0.010 mg As/L, respectively. Mechanistic studies suggest that La 2 O 2 CO 3 facilitates the removal of phosphate and arsenate primarily through electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. These findings indicate that La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Fe 3 O 4 holds significant promise for the co-removal of phosphate and arsenate, even at low concentrations.

CuNi/La2O2CO3/rGO Nanocomposites: An Efficient Noble-Metal-Free Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution from N2H4·H2O

Xiaoling Hong,Qilu Yao,Jianjun Long,Xiugang Li,Xiangshu Chen,Zhang-Hui Lu

Hydrous hydrazine (N2H4·H2O) has great potential as a convenient and safe hydrogen source for fuel cells. Tremendous efforts have been made to develop economic and efficient metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution from N2H4·H2O, but it remains a huge challenge. Herein, for the first time, noble-metal-free CuNi nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on lanthanum oxycarbonate/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (CuNi/La2O2CO3/rGO) were successfully fabricated through an impregnation-reduction approach. Well-dispersed and ultrafine CuNi alloy NPs (∼3.2 nm) can be easily anchored onto La2O2CO3/rGO, and the aggregation of metal NPs can be effectively avoided. Benefiting from the small metal NP size, the synergistic effect between Cu and Ni, and the strong metal–support interactions, the Cu0.5Ni0.5/La2O2CO3/rGO nanocomposites (NCs) exhibited remarkably improved catalytic activity and 100% H2 selectively toward N2H4 decomposition, outperforming Cu/La2O2CO3/rGO, Ni/La2O2CO3/rGO, CuNi/rGO, and CuNi/La2O2CO3. The total turnover frequency of Cu0.5Ni0.5/La2O2CO3/rGO catalyst reached up to 114.3 h–1 at 343 K, indicating that the Cu0.5Ni0.5/La2O2CO3/rGO is one of the most active noble-metal-free catalysts ever reported for the same reaction. The low-cost and outstanding catalytic activity of CuNi/La2O2CO3/rGO NCs improved the feasibility of using N2H4·H2O as a chemical hydrogen carrier and is expected to be applied in economic hydrogen-based fuel cells.

Ga-induced construction of LaGaOx/Cu interfacial sites for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over La2O2CO3-supported catalysts

Yonggang Gang,Zijiang Zhao,Zemin Xu,Xuping Ren,Jun Wang,Wenjun Zhang,Yanhui Long,Liboting Gao,Xiaodong Li,Jianhua Yan,Hao Zhang

Ga doping constructs novel LaGaO x /Cu interfacial structure. • LaGaO x /Cu interfaces stabilize Cu + species by electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) for methanol synthesis. • Ga incorporation promotes adsorption of H 2 , CO 2 and CO. • LOC/Cu:5Ga delivers a methanol space-time yield of 306.7 g kg cat −1  h −1 . • Ga-induced interfaces shift the reaction from a single to a dual-path mechanism. Developing efficient copper-based catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol remains a key challenge in catalytic CO 2 utilization. Irreducible rare-earth oxides offer outstanding thermal stability and structural robustness, yet their limited activity and selectivity restrict methanol productivity. Herein, we propose a promoter-induced interfacial engineering strategy to activate La 2 O 2 CO 3 (LOC)-supported Cu catalysts by incorporating Ga as a heteroatom promoter. A series of Ga-doped LOC/Cu catalysts (denoted as Cu:xGa) were synthesized via a two-step co-precipitation method, exhibiting a pronounced dependence of catalytic performance on Ga loading. The optimized Cu:5Ga catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 9.2% and a methanol space-time yield of 306.7 g kg cat −1  h −1 (3 MPa, 260 °C), corresponding to a 9.8-fold enhancement relative to undoped Cu. Comprehensive structural and spectroscopic characterizations reveal that Ga doping induces the formation of highly dispersed LaGaO x /Cu interfacial sites. The enhanced electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) at these interfaces optimizes the electronic structure of Cu sites, facilitating reactant activation and further boosting methanol synthesis. These interfaces stabilize interfacial Cu + species, facilitating the dissociation and adsorption of reactants, and fundamentally modify the reaction pathway from a single formate route to a dual mechanism involving both the formate pathway and the RWGS–CO hydrogenation pathway. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to activate irreducible rare-earth oxide–supported Cu catalysts and provides mechanistic guidance for the rational design of efficient and stable catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Optimizing crystallinity of La2O2CO3 to boost reverse water-gas shift reaction performance over Co-based supported catalysts

Xiao-Yu Zhang,Wen-Lin Li,Zhi-Hao Ma,Sheng Li,Wei-Wei Yan,Li Li,Xing-Shun Cong,Xian-Yong Wei,Zhi-Xin Li

Reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction has become an important strategy to couple application of carbon resources and hydrogen energy. However, Co-based supported catalysts in RWGS reaction consistently experience deactivation under high-temperature operation, predominantly caused by carbon deposition and metal sintering, which present major barriers to the commercial deployment. Here, crystallinity for La 2 O 2 CO 3 supports were modulated to govern the metal-support interaction and CO 2 adsorption performance on Co-based supported catalysts, thereby optimizing RWGS reaction performance. Despite of poorly crystallized La 2 O 2 CO 3 -1 fostered a stronger interaction with Co species, which detrimentally compromised CO 2 adsorption capacity and inherent anti-coking functionality of La 2 O 2 CO 3 themselves. In contrast, employing well-crystallized La 2 O 2 CO 3 -2 as the support yielded the Co/La 2 O 2 CO 3 -2 catalyst, exhibiting superior CO 2 adsorption, exceptional resistance to carbon deposition, outstanding activity, high CO selectivity, and remarkable stability—maintaining consistent CO 2 conversion and selectivity for over 100 h at 600°C. This crystallinity-driven strategy effectively balances the Co-La 2 O 2 CO 3 interaction, presenting a novel way to boost RWGS reaction performance over Co-based supported catalysts.

Recyclable high-affinity arsenate sorbents based on porous Fe2O3/La2O2CO3 composites derived from Fe-La-C frameworks

Jiang-Bo Huo,Kiran Gupta,Changyong Lu,Hans Chr. Bruun Hansen,Ming-Lai Fu

Efficient removal of aqueous arsenic is still a great challenge in particular for producing clean drinking water and for waste water treatment. To this end, a novel magnetic porous Fe-La composite, comprising La 2 O 2 CO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 , was fabricated via a self-sacrificing template method based on bimetallic (Fe, La)-MOFs calcined at 550 °C. Batch adsorption results demonstrated that Fe-LaXY (X and Y represent the feeding mole ratio of Fe and La precursors) exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of As(V) (241, 251 and 410 mg g −1 for Fe-La51, Fe-La21 and Fe-La11, respectively), and they also showed satisfactory adsorption kinetics, which can be ascribed to a strong coordination between La and arsenate species. Coexisting sorbates including carbonate, silicate, sulfate, and humic acid had a slight influence on adsorption performance of arsenate, while phosphate isostructural to arsenate gave severe interference. More importantly, the Fe-La11 could be easily separated from water due to its magnetism (7.0 emu g −1 ), and it also exhibited excellent recyclability (above 80% of removal efficiency at the fifth cycle) as well as stability in terms of release of Fe and La ions (< 0.5 mg L −1 at pH 4.0–10.0). Based on results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy, it is demonstrated that ligand exchange of surface hydroxyl groups and the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes are main responsible for the As(V) removal mechanism. Combining the magnetic properties, the absorption properties and the recyclability make Fe-LaXY derived from bimetallic MOFs promising sorbents for arsenate removal.

Synthesis of jet fuel intermediates via aldol condensation of biomass-derived furfural with lanthanide catalyst

Lu-ping Li,Zhen Fang,Xiao Kong,Wen-Jie Cong

Jet fuel precursors (4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one (FAc) and 1,5-di-2-furanyl-1,4-pentadien-3-one (F 2 Ac)) can be produced from aldol condensation between furfural and acetone over basic catalysts. However, there is still a need to develop efficient alkaline catalysts and understand the role of alkaline sites. In this work, La 2 O 2 CO 3 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst was successfully prepared by coprecipitation and the effect of preparation conditions on the properties and catalytic performance was investigated. Experiments showed that La 2 O 2 CO 3 and La 2 O 3 were formed after calcination , and the activity was greatly improved by the introduction of La 2 O 2 CO 3 . At higher coprecipitation pH, rod-shaped La 2 O 2 CO 3 was formed, which exhibits higher exposure of basic La 3+ -O 2− sites and shows good performance in aldol condensation reactions. The catalytic performance of La 2 O 2 CO 3 -Al 2 O 3 in aldol condensation of furfural with acetone was also evaluated and compared with that of Al 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 , La(OH)₃/Al 2 O 3 and La 2 O 2 CO 3 /Al 2 O 3 . A total conversion of furfural can be realized with F 2 Ac yield of 67.8% at a furfural/acetone ratio of 1/1 and 90 °C, with a FAc yield of 25.8% at the same time. The deactivation mechanism of the La 2 O 2 CO 3 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst was also studied.

Porous walnut-like La2O2CO3 derived from metal-organic frameworks for arsenate removal: A study of kinetics, isotherms, and mechanism

Jiang-Bo Huo,Guoce Yu,Lei Xu,Ming-Lai Fu

Exploration of renewable materials for efficient elimination of arsenic from water is highly imperative. Herein, one kind of novel porous walnut-like La 2 O 2 CO 3 composite is reported for the first time, fabricated via direct pyrolysis of La-MOFs at 550 °C under the air atmosphere. The as-synthesized material predominantly consists of La 2 O 2 CO 3 , featuring micrometer-scale walnut-like morphology and an abundant mesoporous structure. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that a pseudo-second-order model with a high correlation coefficient (0.9976–0.9988) can depict this adsorption process in a good manner and indicates chemical adsorption. Analysis of the isotherms further revealed that this adsorption is a monolayer and homogeneous process, with an excellent adsorption capacity (210.1 As mg/g), as calculated from the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated this adsorption process to be a spontaneous and endothermic, with a positive change in entropy. By characterization results, it can be deduced that the anion-exchange interaction (i.e. carbonate is prone to being replaced by arsenate) and inner-sphere complexation were both responsible for arsenate removal. A broad working pH range (3.0–9.0) and a good cyclic performance (removal rate is above 90% for the fourth cycle) as well as an excellent adsorption capacity make this adsorbent a promising arsenic scavenger.

Efficient selective hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol to 1,5-pentanediol over rod-like La2O2CO3-supported Ni nanoparticle catalyst

Yunjie Guo,Ayyaz Mahmood,Yongqi Liu,Haoshen Niu,Tongtong Qiu,Jin Liu,Sijie Li,Junguo Li,Ke Liu,Xi Gao

The effects of catalyst preparation and reaction conditions, feedstocks, and catalyst reusability were investigated. • The morphologies of catalyst evolution from sheet-like structures to nanorods were controlled by hydrothermal treatment. • Morphology control is associated with metal-support interactions and promotes selective ring opening. • Rod-like Ni@La 2 O 2 CO 3 delivers a remarkable 76.9 ± 0.3% yield of 1,5-pentanediol from furfuryl alcohol. • DFT calculations indicate that the catalyst favors the 1,5-PeD pathway with a low barrier of 1.46 eV and an exothermicity of –0.53 eV. The selective hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FA) to 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PeD) represents a sustainable alternative to petrochemical routes, yet achieving high selectivity over non-noble metal catalysts remains a significant challenge due to competing side reactions. Herein, we report an efficient catalyst featuring Ni nanoparticles supported on rod-like lanthanum oxycarbonate (Ni@La 2 O 2 CO 3 ). Under optimized preparation and reaction conditions, the catalyst achieves complete FA conversion and a remarkable 1,5-PeD yield of 76.9 ± 0.3%, with a moderately high space-time yield (STY) of 1.13 ± 0.01 g 1,5-PeD ·g cat –1 ·h –1 . The morphological evolution from sheet-like structures to nanorods via controlled hydrothermal treatment significantly correlates with the interfacial synergy between Ni and La 2 O 2 CO 3 and boosts the 1,5-PeD yield. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidate the mechanistic origin of the high regioselectivity, identifying an interface that induces electron accumulation on the Ni active sites. This electronic modulation significantly lowers the activation barrier for the C–O bond cleavage of the tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol intermediate to 1.46 eV for the 1,5-PeD pathway, compared to 1.72 eV for the 1,2-PeD route. This work provides an efficient strategy for the rational design of morphology-controlled non-noble catalysts for the high-value valorization of biomass. Alkali-assisted synthesis of ultrafine NiPt nanoparticles immobilized on La2O2CO3 for highly efficient dehydrogenation of hydrous hydrazine and hydrazine borane

Qilu Yao,Jianjun Long,Kangkang Yang,Xiugang Li,Bin Huang,Xiangshu Chen,Zhang-Hui Lu

Designing highly active and selective metal nanocatalysts for use in liquid chemical hydrides is highly attractive but remains a critical challenge. Herein, bimetallic NiPt nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on lanthanum oxycarbonate (NiPt/La 2 O 2 CO 3 ) have been facilely synthesized via an alkali-assisted reduction method. The introduction of NaOH is the key factor to the formation of the well-dispersed and ultrafine NiPt NPs (2.8 nm). The obtained Ni 0.6 Pt 0.4 /La 2 O 2 CO 3 exhibits an extraordinarily high catalytic activity and 100% H 2 selectivity for hydrous hydrazine dehydrogenation , providing a turnover frequency value (TOF) high up to 490 h −1 at 298 K. Additionally, the NiPt/La 2 O 2 CO 3 prepared with NaOH demonstrates higher catalytic performance and lower activation energy than that of NiPt/La 2 O 2 CO 3 _N prepared without NaOH. Moreover, the NiPt/La 2 O 2 CO 3 also shows an outstanding catalytic efficiency (TOF = 1200 h −1 ) for dehydrogenation of hydrazine borane at 298 K. The efficient catalytic performance may be attributed to the small size effect, the strong metal-support interaction, and the NaOH promotion effect. This alkali-assisted reduction method provides a new perspective for preparing of highly efficient catalysts in clean energy application.
