In this study, LaB 6 -reinforced Ti6Al4V was successfully fabricated by the selective laser melting (SLM) process. TiB and La 2 O 3 with particle-like shapes formed uniformly after the in-situ reaction of LaB 6 and Ti6Al4V. The sizes of the TiB and La 2 O 3 particles were around 1 µm and 200 nm, respectively. Due to a combined strengthening effect of the micrometer-scale and nanoscale reinforcements, the mechanical properties of the LaB 6 /Ti6Al4V samples were enhanced significantly. However, the effect was highly related to the SLM parameters. As the laser power increased, the TiB changed from particle to needle-like shape and La 2 O 3 tended to aggregate and grow into a larger size. Besides, the martensite α-Ti also became coarser, which was disadvantageous to the mechanical performance. The desired inner structure can be obtained by adjusting the processing parameters of the SLM. The best mechanical performance of the SLM LaB 6 /Ti6Al4V samples was achieved at the laser power of 260 W and the scanning speed of 500 mm/s. The maximum tensile strength and Vickers hardness were 1337.1 MPa and 477.62 HV, respectively, which outperformed the other counterparts significantly. Thus, the results suggest that the in-situ reaction of LaB 6 and Ti6Al4V can improve the mechanical properties of the Ti6Al4V alloys effectively.

In this study, TiB + La2O3/Ti-6Al-4V composites were successfully prepared by in situ reaction using selective laser melting technology. The effect of LaB6content on the fabrication quality, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the composite samples was investigated. The results show that the relative density of the sample gradually decreased from 98.56% to 96.57% as LaB6content increased from 0 wt% to 3 wt%. With increasing LaB6content, TiB precipitates gradually aggregated and grew from a discrete needle-like structure to a dendritic structure, before eventually developing a cell-like structure. The dislocations piled up around the TiB and La2O3reinforcements, which impeded the motion of the dislocations and led to the enhancement of the tensile strength of the samples. Different from the addition of a single reinforcement due to the combined strengthening effect of the micrometer-scale and nanoscale reinforcements, the strength of the samples was increased significantly. The Ti-6Al-4V sample with 3 wt% LaB6addition showed the most significant strengthening effect. Compared to the pure Ti-6Al-4V sample, the 3 wt% LaB6addition sample gained a 35.71% increase in hardness and a 14.5% increase in tensile strength. Additionally, wear volume was reduced by 47.5%. The results revealed that the addition of LaB6was a potential way to improve the mechanical performance of the titanium alloys in the additive manufacturing process.

This study comparatively investigates the effects of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB 6 ) addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V components fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and selective laser melting (SLM). Gas-atomized spherical Ti-6Al-4V powders were mixed with irregular LaB 6 powders (1.0 wt%) and consolidated using SPS and SLM, respectively. In both processes, LaB 6 partially decomposed into La 2 O 3 and titanium borides, including TiB and TiB 2 . The SPS-processed Ti-6Al-4V, with or without LaB 6 , exhibits a lamellar α+β structure. In contrast, the SLM-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V shows a fully acicular α′ martensitic structure, while the addition of LaB 6 transforms it into a mixed microstructure consisting of α′ martensite and α plates. Owing to the refined structure resulting from the high cooling rate inherent to the SLM process, the SLM-processed Ti-6Al-4V exhibits a higher ultimate compressive strength (1920 MPa) than its SPS counterpart (1540 MPa). The in-situ formation of La 2 O 3 and titanium borides effectively increases the yield strength of both SPS- and SLM-processed Ti-6Al-4V. However, the addition of LaB 6 also leads to a deterioration in ultimate compressive strength, attributed to the reduced plasticity caused by weak interfaces between undissolved LaB 6 particles and the Ti-6Al-4V matrix.

In this work, different compositions of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB 6 ) and tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanoparticles were doped into poly(vinylbutyral) (PVB) matrix to prepare PVB/LaB 6 –ITO nanocomposite (PLINC) films by a solution casting method. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and ultraviolet–visible–near infrared spectroscopy (UV–vis–NIR) were employed to characterize the PLINCs. The TGA and UV–vis–NIR results reveal that the nanocomposite films possessed outstanding thermal stability. The temperature where 5 % weight loss of the PVB matrix was improved after the addition of LaB 6 and ITO particles and the property for blocking near infrared light was also enhanced as compared with the case of pure PVB film.

Aerodynamic heating threatens hypersonic vehicles, making lightweight, flexible thermal protection coatings essential. This paper designs and prepares a multifunctional B 4 C-LaB 6 /silicone rubber high-emissivity ceramicizable thermal protection coating. By incorporating chopped high-silica silica fibers and aramid fibers as ablation-resistant fillers into the silicone rubber matrix, and combining them with the high-emissivity functional components B 4 C and LaB 6 , a coating material with both ablation protection and radiative heat dissipation capabilities was achieved. Research indicates that the synergistic effect of B 4 C-LaB 6 significantly enhances the thermal stability and thermal insulation performance of the composite coating: At a B 4 C:LaB 6 ratio of 20:20, the coating's mass retention rate at 1000°C increased from 43.45% to 80.68%, with an average infrared emissivity reaching 0.947. Concurrently, the coating exhibited lower linear ablation rates and a denser ceramic layer structure. This research offers new insights for multifunctional silicone rubber thermal protection coatings, showing potential for hypersonic vehicles. Highlights The B 4 C-LaB 6 system significantly improves the thermal stability of silicone rubber composites. The B 4 C-LaB 6 system densifies the ceramic layer during high-temperature ablation. The B 4 C-LaB 6 system achieves high near-infrared emissivity. The B 4 C-LaB 6 /silicone rubber coating demonstrates a multifunctional design for thermal protection materials.
