LaNiO3 as a Novel Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Zhang Chang,Wu Cong,Zhang Zhiwei,Shen Yanran,Liu Wei

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been developed for over 30 years; however, existing electrode materials cannot satisfy the increasing requirements of high-energy density, stable cycling, and low cost. Here, we present a perovskite-type LaNiO 3 oxide (LNO) as a new negative electrode material. LNO was successfully synthesized by a sol–gel method. The microstructure and electrochemical performance of LNO calcined at various temperatures have been systematically investigated. The LNO electrode shows a high rate capability and long cycling stability. In a C-rate test, a specific capacity of 77 mAh/g was exhibited at 6 C. LNO can also deliver a specific capacity of 92 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 1 C. This paper presents a type of binary metal oxide as a new anode material for high-performance LIBs.

Flexible LaNiO3 film with both high electrical conductivity and mechanical robustness

Shuzhi Zhang,Panpan Lv,Hang Zhan,Le Xin,Jia Wang,Ruihang Li,Yuxin Cui,Tong Pan,Cuncheng Li,Luchao Ren,Mingwei Zhang

Lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO 3, LNO) films exhibit excellent electrical conductivity but poor mechanical properties, considerably limiting their further development in the field of flexible electronics. In this study, flexible LNO thin films of different thicknesses were fabricated on a unique two-dimensional (2D) mica platform using a simple metal organic deposition technique. The obtained LNO films exhibited a pseudocubic phase without impurities. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterisations proved that the films were well-crystallised, dense, and flat, with controllable thickness. In addition, the flexible LNO/mica element possesses low resistivity (5 × 10 −4  Ω cm), translucency, and good bending resistance. The electrical resistivity can remain stable under various bending radii ( r  = 10∼2 mm), thousands of bending cycles, and a wide temperature range (28–200 °C), demonstrating good durability, mechanical stability and temperature resistance. Furthermore, a ferroelectric BiFeO 3 film was constructed based on the obtained conductive LNO electrode, which exhibited typical ferroelectric characteristics. This excellent performance suggests that the flexible LNO electrode is promising for flexible electronic applications.

Ru ions enhancing the interface bonding between the Pt nanoparticle catalyst and perovskite support for super anti-sintering performance

Siran Zhang,Wei Zhou,Jianing Mao,Kang An,Ningyan Li,Tian Qin,Liwei Chen,Xi Liu,Bingbao Mei,Zheng Jiang,Zhong-Li Wang,Yusuke Yamauchi,Yuan Liu

Supported noble metal catalysts are widely applied in energy and environmental catalytic reactions; however, noble metal particles are prone to sintering under reaction conditions. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of Ru ions in the LaNiO3 perovskite support produces strong interface bonding between the Pt nanoparticle catalyst and LaNiO3 support, resulting in super anti-sintering performance of the Pt nanoparticle catalyst. A novel method is developed to synthesize the supported noble metal catalysts by doping Pt and Ru ions into the lattice of LaNiO3 and then reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. The different formation energies of both metal ions in the LaNiO3 lattice induce selective reduction of Pt ions to generate Pt nanoparticles, while Ru ions remained in the LaNiO3 support. Using CO oxidation as a probe reaction, we find that supported Pt nanoparticles on Ru doped LaNiO3 hardly change after undergoing a high temperature of 600 °C for 250 h, and the average particle size only increases from 2.1 to 2.4 nm; moreover, the high catalytic activity is maintained. In contrast, without Ru ions, the Pt particles grow from 2.9 to 10.9 nm, and the activity decreases significantly. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that Ru ions not only form stable Pt–O–Ru ionic bonds but also enhance the Pt–O bonding on LaNiO3.

Lanthanide oxide supported Ni nanoparticles for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Huiyue Xin,Mengnan Li,Li Chen,Chen Zhao,Peng Wu,Xiaohong Li

NiO–LnOx (Ln = La, Ce or Pr) precursors were prepared using a sol–gel method with glucose as a template, and the corresponding Ni/LnOx catalysts were obtained by reduction in hydrogen at 500 °C. When applied to the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL), the Ni/La2O3 catalyst exhibited superior behavior to Ni/Pr6O11 and Ni/CeO2, affording 90.2% selectivity to hydrocinnamaldehyde (HCAL) with an initial activity of 0.57 s−1 under mild conditions. Various characterization techniques confirmed that the formation of the perovskite LaNiO3 precursor enhanced the interaction of Ni species with lanthanum species, and effectively avoided the agglomeration of Ni nanoparticles during the reduction. Hence, Ni nanoparticles could achieve high and uniform dispersion. Moreover, the CO group in CAL was preferentially adsorbed and fixed by weak and medium-strong basic sites (La3+–O2−) on the Ni/La2O3 catalyst, so that the chemisorption of the CC bond on active Ni nanoparticles becomes more favorable and thus the corresponding selective hydrogenation of the CC bond dominates.

Enhanced Charge Transport in Conventional Polymer Solar Cells with a Perovskite-Type LaNiO3 Layer

Qiancheng Shang,Junsheng Yu,Rong Hu,Zixiong Liu,Jiang Cheng,Ying Li,Xuxia Shai,Ming-ming Huo,Xin Yang,Lu Li

In this study, a novel metal oxide, lanthanum nickelate (LNO) with a perovskite structure, was introduced into a polymer solar cell (PSC) device, replacing the PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer (HTL). The results show that the LNO-based PTB7-Th:PC71BM solar cell exhibits a higher circuit current density, power conversion efficiency, and stability compared with a device with PEDOT:PSS HTL. To understand the effect of LNO HTL on the performance of devices, the active layer morphology and charge transport characteristics in PSCs were systematically analyzed. The morphology of active layer was affected by the HTL, which further regulated the generation and transport processes of charge carrier in the PSC device. For the LNO HTL, an appropriate thickness (8 nm) and a small surface roughness (Sq = 0.7 nm) can coordinate the energy-level structure of device and improve the interface contact between the FTO electrode and PTB7-Th:PC71BM active layer, promoting the charge transport performance of device. Therefore, this work provides a new consideration for the preparation of efficient, stable, and low-cost polymer solar cells.

EFFECT OF LATTICE MISMATCH ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF LaNiO3 CONDUCTIVE FILMS

M. W. ZHU,B. D. YOU,D. C. SHI,T. N. LU,J. N. WANG,N. JIA,C. Z. LIU

In this work, we prepared LaNiO 3 (LNO) and Au-LaNiO 3 (Au-LNO) films using sol–gel multilayer coating method. The effects of lattice mismatch on the microstructure and electrical properties of the films were investigated by choosing different single-crystal substrate. XRD, SEM, and AFM results showed the high quality of LNO and Au-LNO films, indicating the successful epitaxial growth of the films on the single-crystal substrates. The room temperature resistivity of LNO films increased with the increase of lattice mismatch while different tendency was observed in Au-LNO films, suggesting that different mechanisms prevailed in the LNO and Au-LNO films. Both the transport behavior and the residual resistivity ratio were checked to explore the relationship between the lattice mismatch and the electrical properties of the films. Strain and defect concentration were proposed as the predominating factors for the changes in the resistivity of LNO and Au-LNO films under the influence of lattice mismatch.

Electrochemical Doping and Electronic Phase Transition of Thin-Film Perovskite LaNiO3 at Room Temperature

Sun Yibo,Zheng Yuxi,Zhao Mohan,Zhang Xuefeng,Li Gang,Guan Xiaofei

Rare-earth nickelates ( R NiO 3 ) offer great promise for applications in emergent electronic devices owing to their tunable electrical properties. LaNiO 3 offers processing and operational advantages over heavier R NiO 3 due to its easier synthesis and superior stability. However, the experimental exploration of modulation strategies and the mechanistic understanding of electronic phase transition in thin-film LaNiO 3 remain incomplete. Herein, we demonstrate the electrochemical doping of cations (Li + , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Al 3+ ) with different radii and valence states into LaNiO 3 thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering and air annealing. A significant increase of resistivity was observed upon ion intercalation into LaNiO 3 under a positive gate voltage (3 V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) have been conducted to unveil the effect of electrochemical doping on the electronic structure change. Specifically, the peak intensity ratio change of Ni L-edge XAS confirms the reduction of the nominal valence of nickel from +3 to +2 after electrochemical doping. The decrease of the relative intensity of the oxygen K-edge pre-edge also confirms the increased electron occupation in Ni 3d–O 2p orbitals and suggests enhanced electron localization. Moreover, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the metal–insulator transition of LaNiO 3 was attributed more to the Coulombic repulsion caused by electron doping rather than to the structure distortion.

Peroxydisulfate activation by LaNiO3 nanoparticles with different morphologies for the degradation of organic pollutants

Wei Yan,Leng Yanqiu,Wang Rongyao,Ren Xiaohua,Guo Weilin

A series of LaNiO 3 perovskite nanoparticles with different morphologies, such as spheres, rods and cubes, were prepared through co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods, and used as the catalysts for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. The physical and chemical characterization of LaNiO 3 perovskites was performed, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen isotherm absorption (BET), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The LaNiO 3 with different shapes showed different activities in Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation. Sphere-like LaNiO 3 exhibited the highest catalytic activity, which is probably due to the largest specific surface area, higher proportion of reductive Ni 2+ and the higher electron transfer ability. The radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed the production of massive sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) during the oxidation. Finally, the possible mechanisms of PDS activation and AO7 degradation were proposed. The prepared LaNiO 3 perovskites also showed excellent reusability and stability. Three LaNiO 3 perovskites with different morphologies were synthesized. Sphere-like LaNiO 3 exhibited the highest catalytic activity for activating PDS. Produced • OH and SO 4 •− were main active species in the reaction system. The mechanism of AO7 degradation reaction in the system was proposed. LaNiO 3 can be reused for multiple cycles to activate PDS for AO7 degradation.

Ti3C2Tx Intercalated with LaNiO3 Nanocubes as Freestanding Electrodes with Synergistically Enhanced Capacitive Performance for Supercapacitors

Yu Hu,Hongchen Song,Qinglin Jiang,Xiaofang Liu,Congcong Liu,Cheng Liu,Fengxing Jiang,Jingkun Xu,Peipei Liu

The practical application of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in supercapacitors is hindered by its tendency to spontaneously restack, which reduces accessible active sites and impedes charge transport kinetics. To address this challenge, a synergistic strategy is proposed: hydrothermally derived LaNiO 3 perovskite nanocubes are integrated into Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets via vacuum-assisted filtration, constructing a freestanding Ti 3 C 2 T x /LaNiO 3 composite electrode. The uniformly dispersed LaNiO 3 nanocubes act as interlayer spacers to inhibit MXene restacking and contribute capacitance, meanwhile, the conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x matrix ensures rapid electron transfer. As a result, the optimized composite exhibits a higher specific capacitance (206.8   F   g -1 at 0.5   A   g -1 ) than pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x , and demonstrates ultralong cycling stability (99.8% retention of the initial capacitance after 20,000 cycles at 5   A   g -1 ). Furthermore, a quasi-solid-state asymmetric device (Ti 3 C 2 T x /LaNiO 3 //N-doped graphene) assembled from the composite achieves an energy density of 12.63   Wh   kg -1 at a power density of 450.2   W   kg -1 and maintains 88.6% of its capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for designing advanced MXene-based freestanding electrodes by intercalating perovskite nanocubes for next-generation energy storage systems.

Effective electrodeposition of poly(5-nitroindole) loaded on LaNiO3/carbon cloth as high-performance electrode for supercapacitors

Yu Hu,Hongchen Song,Zhenghua Qu,Jun Dong,Fengxing Jiang,Congcong Liu,Xiaofang Liu,Qinglin Jiang,Cheng Liu,Jingkun Xu,Peipei Liu

LaNiO 3 , as a promising pseudocapacitive material, exhibits multiple valence states (Ni²⁺/Ni³⁺) and adjustable conductivity. However, the poor cycle life and limited electrolyte accessibility of LaNiO 3 currently restrict its potential applications. To address these challenges, poly(5-nitroindole) is loaded on LaNiO 3 /carbon cloth by a simple electrodeposition method as a novel electrode for supercapacitors. The electron-withdrawing nitro (-NO 2 ) group in poly(5-nitroindole) not only enhances surface hydrophilicity but also introduces additional redox active sites, substantially boosting the pseudocapacitance performance. Furthermore, the synergistic combination of LaNiO 3 with high conductivity and poly(5-nitroindole) with porous nano-network structure establishes an efficient conductive framework, significantly reducing charge transfer resistance and enhancing the stability of composite electrodes. As a result, the composite electrode delivers a high areal/gravimetric capacitance of 594.4 mF cm −2 /807.6 F g −1 at 0.5 mA cm −2 and long cycling stability with 76.0 % retention of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior analysis has confirmed the simultaneous effect of surface storage capacitance and diffusion processes of the prepared composite electrode, and the porous nano-network structure of poly(5-nitroindole) effectively optimizes the adsorption/diffusion pathways of electrolyte ions. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing high-performance supercapacitor electrodes by integrating conductive perovskites with functionalized conducting polymers.

Agglomeration-Resistant Ni Nanoparticles Generated by In Situ Hydrogenation Treatment of LaNiO3 as Catalyst for the Ammonia Decomposition

Jiaxin Li,Junhui Liang,Xin Yao,Hongming Liu,Yuhui Du,Huayu Chen,Hangning Chen,Chenhao Du,Liuqi Wang,Yincheng Li,Yuexiang Huang,Da Chen

The development of low-temperature, nonprecious metal thermocatalysts for ammonia decomposition holds significant promise for advancing the green hydrogen industry. LaNiO3 catalysts, with their perovskite structure (ABX3), are notable for enabling in situ growth of active metal Ni on reduced oxide supports during ammonia decomposition reactions (ADRs). However, unintentional in situ growth can lead to uncontrolled reactions and metal particle agglomeration. To address this, we employed a straightforward high-temperature and pressure hydrogenation pretreatment process to enhance the interaction between the active metal and the support, thereby suppressing the agglomeration of the active metal during the ADR process. Our results indicate that the hydrogenation pretreatment catalyst exhibits finer Ni metal nanoparticles, with an average size of approximately 8 nm. Under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 18,000 mL gcat–1 h–1 and at 550 °C, the NH3 conversion efficiency reaches 90%, which exhibited excellent stability over a period of 100 h. Additionally, we utilized TEM, XPS, EPR, NH3-TPD, and H2-TPR techniques to elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms related to the enhanced catalytic activity. This study addresses the issue of active metal nanoparticle agglomeration through hydrogenation pretreatment.

Preparation and patterning of HfO2 film via sol–gel method and resistive switching effect of Pt/HfO2/LaNiO3

Xiaoqin Liu,Jianbo Liu,Wei Li,Qingqing Sheng,Yeming He,Yangyang Wang

Sol–gel method is a low-cost material preparation method; however, it is difficult to obtain a stable sol containing easily hydrolyzable metal ions via this method. In this study, a stable hafnium(IV) oxide (HfO 2 ) sol was prepared by adding benzoyl acetone (BzAcH) modifier. Infrared absorption spectroscopy results showed that the BzAcH additive chelated with the Hf 4+ ions in the sol, thus improving the hydrolysis resistance of the HfO 2 sol, which in turn improved its stability. It was also found that the BzAcH-modified HfO 2 gel film exhibited ultraviolet (UV) photosensitivity. After UV exposure, the film did not dissolve easily in organic solvents . Based on these properties, the micro processing of the HfO 2 film was preliminarily explored, and HfO 2 microstructures were successfully obtained. Additionally, the relative permittivity ( ε r ) of HfO 2 exhibited minimum (∼10.9) and maximum (∼20.6) values at heat-treatment (HT) temperatures of 350 and 450 °C, respectively. With the continuous increase in the HT temperature, ε r first decreased and then increased slightly. Moreover, the current–voltage curves showed that the Pt/HfO 2 /LaNiO 3 (LNO) structure exhibited a pronounced bipolar resistive switching (RS) effect, which was attributed to the fact that LNO could be used as an electrode and an oxygen vacancy (OV 2+ ) storage layer for RS materials. Notably, the oxygen ions in HfO 2 with a low degree of crystallinity are more likely to migrate within its body (which makes it easier to form OV 2+ s), therefore, the “Set” voltage of low-crystallinity HfO 2 films is lower than that of high-crystallinity HfO 2 films. The RS mechanism can be explained by the OV 2+ conductive filament model. These results are of great practical significance for the low-cost preparation of HfO 2 and the application of LNO as an oxide electrode.
