A critical challenge in the commercialization of spinel lithium manganate materials is the bulk structure damage and capacity degradation due to manganese dissolution during battery operation. Hence, Li3PO4 with good ionic conductivity was homogeneously deposited on the surface of spinel lithium manganate by the sol–gel method, aiming to improve the stability and cycling of the spinel structure by an epitaxial layer. The structural and electrochemical characterizations reveal that the presence of the Li3PO4 epitaxial coating prevents the direct contact of the cathode surface and electrolyte, thus enhancing the stability of the structure and reducing the extent of manganese dissolution. Further studies have shown that the contribution of the Li3PO4 layer promotes the diffusion coefficient of lithium ions, which increases from 7.89 × 10–12 to 4.43 × 10–11 cm2 s–1. Meanwhile, the Li3PO4 coating regulates the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the surface of the spinel, effectively reducing the transfer resistance and increasing the electronic conductivity to 3.50 × 10–5 cm–1. Specifically, the discharge specific capacity of the 1.0 wt % Li3PO4-modified electrode is still 115.4 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles, with the capacity retention increased to 90.8%. Even at a high rate of 10C, it still demonstrates excellent rate capability, with the discharge specific capacity more elevated than that of the unmodified material at about 40 mAh g–1. This strategy can simultaneously solve the interfacial instability and bulk structure degradation, thus improving the electrochemical performance of lithium manganate materials.

Solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is a potential way to solve the safety problems of lithium metal batteries (LMBs), and Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZTO) is one of the most extensive research SSEs due to its good air stability and wide electrochemical window. However, the residual alkali on LLZTO surface limits its application with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-contained binders, and the uncontrollable lithium dendrites growing between the grain boundaries of LLZTO particles would lead to rapid capacity fading and potential short circuit risk. Herein, by in situ coating Li 3 PO 4 (LPO) on LLZTO particles (LLZTO@LPO) evenly, the residual alkali on the LLZTO surface is neutralized and the pH value is reduced to 8.84. The modified LLZTO can be mixed with PVDF solution and shows good fluidity without a cross-linking reaction, making the subsequent ceramic coating on the separator feasible. The LLZTO@LPO coating polyethylene (PE) separator can achieve 1400 h (115% increase) stable cycling under 1 mA cm −2 current density in the Li∥Li symmetrical cell and 80% capacity retention after 260 cycles (NCM622-Li coin cell with 3 mAh cm −2 loading). Furthermore, the LLZTO SSE pellets were prepared with the LLZTO@LPO and assembled in coin cell. The critical current density (CCD) result increases from 0.7 to 1.6 mA cm −2 owing to that the LPO coating effectively inhibits the lithium dendrites formation through LLZTO grain boundaries. This work provides a strategy for fabricating the coating layer on LLZTO to improve the stability of LMBs.

Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LRMOs) with high specific capacity and elevated working voltage, are regarded as promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, LRMOs still face serious challenges, e.g., voltage decay, subpar rate performance, and subpar cycling performance. These issues significantly limit their electrochemical performance and practical application. Currently, a lot of endeavors are being dedicated to handling the above problems. Herein, we propose a simple dual-interface modification method, which involves treating the surface of the Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides with a specific concentration of NH 4 H 2 PO 4 solution to produce Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 @spinel@Li 3 PO 4 . The findings indicate that the surface coating layer of Li 3 PO 4 not only functions to safeguard the material against electrolyte corrosion but also facilitates an enhanced diffusion rate of Li + to a certain degree. Furthermore, oxygen vacancies are created on the surface as a result of the reduction of NH3 produced by the breakdown of NH 4 H 2 PO 4 . This phenomenon subsequently facilitates the dissolution of transition metal (TM) ions to form a local spinel layer. The spinel layer can reduce phase distortion, create a 3D diffusion path for Li + transmission, inhibit oxygen over-oxidation, and enhance dynamic stability. Therefore, the LRMO treated with NH₄H₂PO₄ delivers an exceptionally high first-discharge capacity of 301.59 mAh g⁻¹ and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 93.13 %, compared with 278.47 mAh g⁻¹ and 80.68 % for pristine LRMO. After 100 cycles at 1 C, the treated material retains 90.47 % of initial capacity, whereas the untreated counterpart retains only 73.62 %. The material also shows minimal voltage decay, measured at only 3.025 mV per cycle, and possesses favorable rate capability, achieving up to 157.88 mAh g⁻¹ at a rate of 5C. Clearly, this dual-interface modification approach provides crucial technical insights that are vital for the advancement and high-performance industrialization LRMO.

Lithium phosphate hollow nanospheres were prepared in a membrane dispersion microreactor using aqueous phosphoric acid and lithium hydroxide solutions as reactants. The influences of reactant flow rate ratio and temperature on the purity and morphology of the prepared nanospheres were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that nanospheres prepared in the continuous flow condition had a hollow interior structure with high crystallinity. A possible mechanism for the formation of this hollow structured Li 3 PO 4 was also proposed. Using Li 3 PO 4 hollow nanospheres as the precursor, LiFePO 4 hollow nanospheres were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal route in ethylene glycol. After coating with carbon, the LiFePO 4 /C hollow nanospheres exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, especially at high rates, and could discharge124 mAh/g at 10 C, and even 98 mAh/g at 40 C.

Li-rich Mn-based oxide (LRMO) represents a promising cathode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its superior energy density. However, its widespread commercialization is hampered by severe capacity fade, voltage decay, and inferior rate performance. Herein, modification of LRMO with Li 3 PO 4 (LPO) is achieved by a novel one-step strategy that seamlessly integrates freeze-drying with subsequent calcination in air. Crucially, this LPO significantly enhances lithium-ion diffusion kinetics without altering the bulk crystal structure. The optimized cathode with a 3 wt% LPO delivers superior cycling stability, with a remarkable capacity retention of 67.8% after 600 cycles at 1C and 25 °C, significantly outperforming the blank cathode (54.9%). It also exhibits outstanding rate capability (102.9 mAh g −1 at 10C) and long-term cyclability (58.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 3C). Furthermore, the practical applicability is further demonstrated under a 1.5C/0.5C protocol and in a full cell with a Si@C anode. This work provides a scalable synthesis route, advancing the development of practical high-energy LRMO cathodes.

In this work, a unique artificial interface combing characteristics of both high ionic and electronic conductivities has been successfully constructed at the surface of Ni-rich LiNi 0 · 8 Co 0 · 1 Mn 0 · 1 O 2 (NCM811). The ionic conductor layer is fabricated through reacting H 3 PO 4 with the lithium residuals on the surface of NCM811 to form Li 3 PO 4 . The interface with high electronic conductivity is constructed by attaching graphene fragments to the NCM811 spherical particles. Due to the synergistic effect of the Li 3 PO 4 coating layer and the graphene network, the modified sample (GN-LPO-NCM811) exhibits high capacity retention of 94.3% after 150 cycles at 0.5C between 3.0 and 4.3 V, while the pristine material shows a much lower retention of only 88.1%. In addition, the GN-LPO-NCM811 also presents improved cycling stability at elevated temperature of 55 °C. Even at an extremely high rate of 10C, the GN-LPO-NCM811 still remains 70% of its original capacity, while the pristine NCM811 only delivers 50% of the capacity. The stable cycling performance of GN-LPO-NCM811 is demonstrated in a full cell with graphite anode at ambient temperatures. Importantly, the thermal stability of the modified samples is also greatly enhanced. This study provides an effective method to improve the electrochemical performance of LiNi 0 · 8 Co 0 · 1 Mn 0 · 1 O 2 .

70Li 2 S·(30- x )P 2 S 5 · x Li 3 PO 4 (mol%) amorphous powders are prepared by a high-energy ball milling technique, and the glass-ceramics are obtained by the crystallization of as-prepared amorphous samples. The XRD patterns show that a crystalline phase with a Li 7 P 3 S 11 structure is obtained for x ≤ 3, while a structure change is observed for x = 5. The Li + -ion conductivity is enhanced by the substitution of Li 3 PO 4 for P 2 S 5 , and the 70Li 2 S·29P 2 S 5 ·1Li 3 PO 4 glass-ceramics exhibit the highest total conductivity of 1.87 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 25 °C and the lowest activation energy of 18 kJ mol −1 . The LiCoO 2 in the all-solid-state cell of In-Li/70Li 2 S·29P 2 S 5 ·1Li 3 PO 4 /LiCoO 2 exhibits a discharge capacity of 108 mAh g −1 , which is 20% higher than that in the In-Li/70Li 2 S·30P 2 S 5 /LiCoO 2 cell. The higher discharge capacity of the LiCoO 2 electrode is attributed to the higher Li + -ion conductivity of the solid electrolyte and lower interface resistance of electrode–electrolyte.

Lithium metal with high theoretical capacity (3860 mAh/g) and low operational voltage (−3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode) reflects to be one of the most high energy density anodes for energy storage devices. While, its high chemical activity to continuously react with electrolytes causing low coulombic efficiency and formation of lithium dendrites leading safety concern limits practical applications. To conquer these challenges, amorphous Li 3 PO 4 thin films with thickness of 0–200 nm are directly coated on the surface of Li metal foil via magnetron sputtering . The as-prepared Li 3 PO 4 has almost insulated property with electronic conductivity of 1.4 × 10 −10 S/cm and ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10 −8 S/cm. The conformal coating layer Li 3 PO 4 can successfully suppress the lithium dendrites growth and improve its life span. The remarkable improvements of the Li 3 PO 4 -coated Li electrodes are mainly attributed to high chemical stability as well as amorphous nature of Li 3 PO 4 , which leads layer-by-layer growth Li film rather than islands form dendrites.

The construction of an ionic/electronic conducting network is crucial for achieving satisfactory electrochemical performances of LiMnPO4 materials because of their low conductivity and the dissolution of Mn2+. Herein, a hierarchical LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C composite comodified with Li3PO4 and graphite is synthesized via a facile solid-state method combined with freeze drying. The ionic conductor Li3PO4 in situ generated can improve the lithium-ion conductivity and inhibit the reaction of Mn ions with electrolytes. An electronic conducting network is formed through the secondary coating graphite and the residual carbon in situ created within the grain boundaries of LiMnPO4 nanocrystallites. Taking advantage of the synergy effect, the Li3PO4 and graphite comodified LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C material yields an initial discharge capacity of 150 mA h g–1at 0.1 C, a high-rate reversible capacity of 136 mA h g–1at 5 C, and a long-term capacity retention of 91.6% after 500 cycles at 2 C. The design strategy provides a significant inspiration for the development of high-performance cathode materials with practical application.

The development of a new catalyst is of great significance for the potential application of advanced oxidation processes using sulfites as the sources of sulfate radical. In this study, a novel composite catalytic material, Li 3 PO 4 -Co 3 O 4 , was synthesized to activate sulfite to degrade metronidazole (MNZ) in water. Characterization techniques were used to characterize the prepared materials. The key factors affecting the degradation of MNZ, including molar ratio of Li 3 PO 4 and Co 3 O 4 , catalyst dosage, sulfite concentration, pollutant concentration and initial pH, were investigated. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the degradation rate of MNZ can reach 94% within 30 min. The effects of ions on the degradation of MNZ in water were investigated. The XPS test showed that Li 3 PO 4 could increase the content of oxygen vacancy on the catalyst surface to enhance the activation performance, and the conversion between Co 2+ and Co 3+ was the key factor for the activation of sulfite. By electron paramagnetic resonance detection and reactive oxygen species (ROS) clearance experiments, it was concluded that the main ROS in Li 3 PO 4 -Co 3 O 4 /S(IV) system were SO 4 •− and • OH, and the production and transformation mechanisms of SO 4 •− and • OH were fully revealed and demonstrated. MNZ is degraded into multiple intermediate products through two pathways, which are ultimately mineralized into inorganic small molecules. The toxicity analysis of the intermediate products indicate that the system has a strong detoxification effect on MNZ. In addition, the catalyst has good reusability and low metal ion leaching characteristics, indicating that the catalytic system has good practical application potential.

Lithium (Li) metal is a promising candidate for next-generation anode materials with high energy densities. However, Li dissolution/deposition processes are limited at the upper surface in contact with the electrolyte, which brings a locally high current density and then results in dendritic Li growth. This restraint of the local surface reaction during cycling has not been solved by commonly used modification strategies. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Li+ conductive skeleton is activated from atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating Li3PO4 (LPO) on the surface of the Ni foam (LPNF). Then, the skeleton is efficiently constructed in the Li metal anode by the lower-temperature Li infusion. Ionic conductor LPO layers and electronic conductor Ni fibers supply charge transport channels between the electrolyte and the internal Li. The mixed conductive network realizes holistic charge transfer, which is proved by in situ scanning electron microscopy experiments. In virtue of dispersive dissolution/deposition and optimized electrochemical kinetics brought by a Li+ conductive network, the composited Li electrode presents an excellent symmetric battery cycling stability (over 1200 h) and enhanced rate performances (stable cycling even at 10.0 mA cm–2). When matching with a LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode, LCO||Li@LPNF full batteries exhibit a capacity retention of 80.8% over 250 cycles. During cycling, there was no evidence of dendrite growth and the remaining Li in the composited anode showed a smooth, compact, and well-combined condition with LPNF. Through constructing a 3D Li+ conductive network, the composited Li metal anode breaks through the limit of the local surface reaction; this work proposes a novel insight of realizing holistic charging/discharging for the dendrite-free Li metal anode.
