Deep Insight into Electrochemical Kinetics of Cowpea-Like Li3VO4@C Nanowires as High-Rate Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yang Yang,Min Zhao,Jian Xiong,Hongbo Geng,Yufei Zhang,Cheng Chao Li,Jinbao Zhao

Graphical Peas in a pod : Cowpea-like Li 3 VO 4 @C nanowires are prepared through a simple electrospinning method. In this special structure, Li 3 VO 4 nanoparticles are uniformly encapsulated in the carbon nanofibers just like peas in their pods. Benefiting from the characteristic 1D nanowire morphology and uniform carbon coating layer that greatly enhances the electronic conductivity as well as shortens the transport pathways of Li + ions, the cowpea-like Li 3 VO 4 @C exhibits excellent cycling stability and remarkable rate performance. Owing to the high theoretical capacity (394 mAh g −1 ) and appropriate lithiation voltage (0.5–1.0 V vs Li + /Li), Li 3 VO 4 is highly regarded as an attractive anode candidate for high-safety lithium-ion batteries. However, its high-rate performance is seriously restricted by the sluggish electrode kinetics. To address these problems, we synthesize cowpea-like Li 3 VO 4 @C nanowires through a facile electrospinning method. In this well-designed structure, Li 3 VO 4 nanocrystals are uniformly encapsulated in conductive carbon nanofibers just like peas in their pods. The 1D morphology with high electronic conductivity can afford high Li + ions diffusion rate and fast surface charge storage mechanism, leading to significantly enhanced electrochemical kinetics. Even after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , the reversible capacity of cowpea-like Li 3 VO 4 @C nanowires can be maintained at 318.0 mAh g −1 without obvious capacity decay.

Investigation of the Reversible Intercalation/Deintercalation of Al into the Novel Li3VO4@C Microsphere Composite Cathode Material for Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Jiali Jiang,He Li,Jianxing Huang,Kun Li,Jing Zeng,Yang Yang,Jiaqi Li,Yunhui Wang,Jing Wang,Jinbao Zhao

The Li3VO4@C microsphere composite was first reported as a novel cathode material for rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), which manifests the initial discharge capacity of 137 mAh g–1 and and remains at 48 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles with almost 100% Coulombic efficiency. The detailed intercalation mechanism of Al into the orthorhombic Li3VO4 is investigated by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of Li3VO4@C electrodes and the nuclear magnetic resonance aluminum spectroscopy (27Al NMR) of ionic liquid electrolytes in different discharge/charge states. First-principle calculations are also carried out to investigate the structural change as Al inserts into the framework of Li3VO4. It is revealed that the Al/Li3VO4@C battery goes through electrochemical dissolution and deposition of metallic aluminum in the anode, as well as the insertion and deinsertion of Al3+ cations in the cathode in the meantime. The rechargeable AIBs fabricated in this work are of low cost and high safety, which may make a step forward in the development of novel cathode materials based on the acidic ionic liquid electrolyte system.

Li3VO4: an insertion anode material for magnesium ion batteries with high specific capacity

Jing Zeng,Yang Yang,Chao Li,Jiaqi Li,Jianxing Huang,Jing Wang,Jinbao Zhao

Li 3 VO 4 (LVO) is a promising insertion-type anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) while its electrochemical performance in magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) is rarely reported. Here, mesoporous LVO/Carbon (LVO/C) hollow spheres are synthesized by a facile spray-drying method and their electrochemical performance as Mg 2+ insertion-host material is investigated for the first time. Galvanostatic charge-discharge results of LVO/C show no obvious platform in the potential range of 0.5∼2.5   V vs. Mg 2+ /Mg. The LVO/C delivers a high discharge capacity of 318   mAh   g −1 at first cycle and exhibits good cycle performance. The electrochemical intercalation process is proved by element mapping, ex -situ X-ray Powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Our results show that LVO is a promising anode material for MIBs.

Boosting the Electrochemical Properties of LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 Cathode Materials via In Situ Constructed Li3VO4 Surface Coating

Long Jiang,Qinghua Tian,Leiying Zeng,Zhiyuan Liu,Yuqi Meng,Jian Li,Xinming Fan,Gaoqiang Mao,Hui Tong

Nickel-rich cathode materials are widely valued for their high-energy-density and elevated voltage platform. Nevertheless, their limited cycling stability and rate performance significantly restrict their large-scale application in lithium–ion batteries. Herein, the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 was enhanced by the in situ formation of a Li3VO4 coating layer on its surface. LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 was first synthesized by cofiring coprecipitated nickel–cobalt-manganese hydroxide precursor with LiOH·H2O. Subsequently, a dense Li3VO4 modification layer was formed on the LiNi0.90Co0.05Mn0.05O2 surface via a wet chemical method. The modified cathode material exhibits an excellent rate performance (specific discharge capacity of 185.8 mAh·g–1 at 10 C) and superior capacity retention (75.86% after 300 cycles at 2.7–4.5 V). The excellent electrochemical performance of the modified material is attributed to the in situ formation of Li3VO4 on its surface. This formation results in a dense protective layer and stabilizes the material structure. It also inhibits particle cracking, harmful rock-salt phase formation, and lattice distortion during cycling. This coating improves surface and interface properties, accelerates charge transfer kinetics, and reduces electrochemical polarization. This protective layer isolation of the electrode from direct electrolyte contact suppresses electrolyte decomposition and side reactions. Consequently, the Li3VO4 coating exerts synergistic effects, comprehensively enhancing cycling stability and rate capability. This method, based on the in situ growth of protective layers on the surface, provides an advanced and effective strategy for modifying cathode materials, offering valuable guidance for addressing structural and interfacial instability in other high-energy-density rechargeable batteries.

In situ construction of a continuous ionic conductive coating for a high-performance Li3VO4 anode

Lulu Wang,Ceng Zheng,Jianing Liang,Chun Zhai,Hao Liu,Tianyou Zhai,Huiqiao Li

Li3VO4 (LVO) has been widely considered as a promising new insertion-type anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, the surface instability of LVO nanoparticles leads to a sharp decline in the first coulombic efficiency and cycle capacity. In this work, an ionic interface nanolayer of 5–10 nm is effectively coated on the LVO nanoparticle surface by an in situ liquid chemical reaction. The tightly wrapped nanolayer prevents the repeated growth of the SEI, and direct contact between LVO particles and the electrolyte, thus stabilizing the interface layer. The nanolayer with high conductivity for ionic transportation facilitates the delivery of higher capacity from LVO. Compared with the uncoated counterpart, the coated LVO exhibits an increased first coulombic efficiency from 75.7% to 82.3% and a higher reversible capacity from 159 mA h g−1 to 283 mA h g−1. The reversible capacity can be maintained at 238 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.25 C (98.75 mA g−1), indicating that the coating nanolayer can effectively improve the electronic performance of LVO.

Spring Effect Endowing P-doped Li3VO4 With Long-standing Catalytic Activity for Tuning Cycling Stability of MgH2

Wenqiang Hu,Jiahe Zang,Qisen Wang,Siyuan Xiao,Jichao Zhang,Fang Fang,Zhongliang Ma,Dalin Sun,Yun Song

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising hydrogen storage material for its high hydrogen capacity of 7.6 wt.%. However, the further application is severely hampered by the sluggish reaction kinetics and stable thermodynamics. Introducing catalysts is an effective method to improve the reaction rate, but the catalytic activity tends to decrease with an increasing number of reaction cycles, due to the highly reductive Mg and H species. Herein, the spring effect has been observed in the P doped Li 3 VO 4 , in which both V─P and V─V bonds undergo compression and elongation during hydrogen absorption and desorption, respectively. Such a unique self-regulation spring effect not only improves the reaction kinetics of MgH 2 , but also maintains the high activity of P doped Li 3 VO 4 , thereby ensuring the hydrogen capacity of MgH 2 even after 100 loops. This spring effect of chemical bonding, stretched-recovered-stretched with the motion between the highly reductive Mg and H species, will provide insight into catalyst design for hydrogen-related industries.

Dual Active and Kinetically Inter-Promoting Li3VO4/Graphene Anode Enabling Printable High Energy Density Lithium Ion Micro Capacitors

Miaoxin Zhang,Ruijun Bai,Shane King,Fuxing Yin,Huifen Peng,Gongkai Wang

Planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with high energy/power densities and long cycle life are expected to expedite the development of the future wearable miniaturized electronics. However, its low energy density issue always falls short in ever-increasing demands of specific energy consumption. Herein, a dual active and kinetically inter-promoting Li 3 VO 4 (LVO)/graphene composite is designed as the anode for high energy density lithium ion micro capacitors (LIMCs). The LVO nanoparticles are evenly confined on graphene nanosheets through an atomic layer pre-deposition (ALD) technique, which substantially disperses the nucleation site and impedes the coarse grain growth in the successive solid-state formation of LVO. The much-promoted reaction kinetics of LVO and graphene substrate with sufficient diffusion space in the interdigital electrodes of LIMCs synergistically boost the three-dimensional and efficiently lithium ion storage behavior. The LVO/graphene exhibits extraordinary rate capability (98.5 mAh g −1 at 40 A g −1 (100 C)) and long-term stability. All the current collectors and asymmetric interdigital electrodes are spray printed, opening a facile and delicate technique for a large-scale production of LIMCs. The LIMCs deliver a superior volumetric energy density of 51.4 mWh cm −3 , excellent flexible and cyclic stability, demonstrating a great potential for the future miniaturized, flexible, and high-performance energy storage devices.
