All-solid-state Li-batteries have become viable options for energy storage materials over-commercialized Li-ion batteries due to their safety, wider electrochemical stability window, and impressive energy density. All-solid-state Li-based batteries use sulfide-based electrodes with high theoretical specific capacity and ionic conductivity, whereas solid electrolytes have recently shown improved energy density. However, using Li-based batteries in all-solid-state batteries for practical purposes is still a great challenge because of their interfacial issues among the solid electrolytes and electrodes. To elucidate these interfacial issues, this study presents an in-situ liquid-phase approach to prepare CoS 2 @Li 7 P 3 S 11 as the electrode for all-solid-state Li-batteries by coating Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte on cobalt disulfide nanoparticles. Originating from enhanced intimate contact and improved area of contact in the solid electrolyte of sulfide and active material, the synthesized CoS 2 @Li 7 P 3 S 11 nanocomposites employed as a cathode in all-solid-state Li-battery, which shows the ultrahigh cyclic stability and reversible capacity. All-solid-state Li-based batteries consist of CoS 2 @Li 7 P 3 S 11 nanocomposites, Super P, neat Li 7 P 3 S 11 as cathode material, and Li metal as an anode electrode material ( Li-75 %Li 2 S-24 %P 2 S 5 -1 %P 2 O 5 /Li 7 P 3 S 11 /CoS 2 @Li 7 P 3 S 11 /Li). At low (100 mA/g) and high (1000 mA/g) current density, exhibits an 1112.6 mAh/g reversible discharge capacity after 30 cycles and 208.4 mAh/g after 200 cycles, respectively.

Sulfide solid electrolytes are excessively investigated on account of the high ionic conductivity. However, their applications are hindered by the air-sensitivity and poor interfacial compatibility against lithium metal. Herein, Sn and O co-doping strategy is designed to enhance the stability of the sulfide-based solid state electrolyte towards air moisture and lithium metal. The ionic conductivity of Li 7 Sn 0.1 P 2.8 S 10.5 O 0.2 is twice of that of the pristine Li 7 P 3 S 11 due to the synergistic effect of Sn and O prepared by the solvent-assisted ball milling method. Impressively, with partial substitution of S by O and P by Sn in Li 7 P 3 S 11 , the newly-designed electrolyte largely suppresses the hydrolysis in the air. Furthermore, galvanostatic cycling of symmetric cells demonstrate that Li 7 Sn 0.1 P 2.8 S 10.5 O 0.2 enables improved interfacial compatibility towards lithium metal. Hence, the all-solid-state batteries with Li 7 Sn 0.5 x P 3− x S 11−2.5 x O x significantly elevate the cyclability and the reversible capacity. The co-doping strategy provides a promising approach to achieve excellent chemical and electrochemical stability for the large-scale application of sulfide-based solid state electrolytes.

All-solid-state lithium batteries have been recognized as the next generation energy storage/conversion devices for many high-power and safe applications. Li 7 P 3 S 11 glass ceramics, as a promising solid electrolyte, has shown a high application possibility. Although the synthesis of Li 7 P 3 S 11 by wet-chemical method is more controllable and can be well matched with the existing battery preparation processes, the chemical reaction mechanism of such a liquid-phase reaction process is not fully understood, and also its ionic conductivity is lower than that obtained by solid-state methods. In this paper, we have clarified that the liquid-phase reaction is mainly the process of lone-pair electrons of Li 2 S to attack the bridged S on P 2 S 5 to obtain compounds with different element ratios, which is explored by recording different reaction times and adjusting different proportions of the phase transitions in acetonitrile (ACN) solvent. The only precipitate phase is found to be Li 3 PS 4 ·ACN, which can react with soluble phases with higher P content such as Li 2 P 4 S 11 , Li 4 P 4 S 12 and so on to obtain Li 4 P 2 S 7 for the formation of Li 3 PS 4 ·ACN and Li 4 P 2 S 7 ·ACN (molar ratio 1:1) in the liquid phase . Finally, Li 7 P 3 S 11 is formed by the equimolar reaction of above two compounds during the calcination. XPS and Raman results indicate that the low conductivity of liquid-phase synthesized Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte may be induced by the residual Li 4 P 2 S 6 , which is caused by the inadequate contact and coverage of gel-like Li 4 P 2 S 7 with solid Li 3 PS 4 , resulting in the desulfurization reaction of Li 4 P 2 S 7 during the heat-treatment.

70Li 2 S·(30- x )P 2 S 5 · x Li 3 PO 4 (mol%) amorphous powders are prepared by a high-energy ball milling technique, and the glass-ceramics are obtained by the crystallization of as-prepared amorphous samples. The XRD patterns show that a crystalline phase with a Li 7 P 3 S 11 structure is obtained for x ≤ 3, while a structure change is observed for x = 5. The Li + -ion conductivity is enhanced by the substitution of Li 3 PO 4 for P 2 S 5 , and the 70Li 2 S·29P 2 S 5 ·1Li 3 PO 4 glass-ceramics exhibit the highest total conductivity of 1.87 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 25 °C and the lowest activation energy of 18 kJ mol −1 . The LiCoO 2 in the all-solid-state cell of In-Li/70Li 2 S·29P 2 S 5 ·1Li 3 PO 4 /LiCoO 2 exhibits a discharge capacity of 108 mAh g −1 , which is 20% higher than that in the In-Li/70Li 2 S·30P 2 S 5 /LiCoO 2 cell. The higher discharge capacity of the LiCoO 2 electrode is attributed to the higher Li + -ion conductivity of the solid electrolyte and lower interface resistance of electrode–electrolyte.

All-solid-state lithium sulfur battery is considered as one of the most promising candidates for the future application due to high theoretical energy density and enhanced safety. However, the all-solid-state lithium sulfur battery based on Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte has serious interface issues between electrode and solid electrolyte. The reaction of lithium metal and Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte would form a layer without lithium-ion conducting, which could impend the lithium-ion transfer and transport during cycling and causes increase of internal resistance and capacity fading. Herein, we introduce a solid electrolyte Li 7 P 3 S 11 with BN doping for the all-solid-state lithium sulfur battery. The BN nanoflakes could partially isolate the Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte and lithium metal, thus improving the interfacial compatibility of electrode and electrolyte. With BN doped Li 7 P 3 S 11 used as solid electrolyte, the all-solid-state Li/S battery exhibits an enhanced electrochemical performance with better cycling stability and higher Coulombic efficiency.

It is still a big challenge to simultaneously enhance the ionic conductivity, dendrite suppression capability, and interfacial compatibility of sulfide solid electrolytes. In this work, a novel Li7P2.88Nb0.12S10.7O0.3 solid electrolyte is prepared via Nb and O cosubstitution of glass-ceramic Li7P3S11. This sulfide-based electrolyte possesses a high ionic conductivity (3.59 mS cm–1) at 298 K, improved critical current density (1.16 mA cm–2), and excellent interfacial compatibility between the sulfide electrolyte and Li2S active material. The improved electrochemical stability of the sulfide solid electrolyte against metallic lithium is attributed to the formation of Nb and Li2O at the interface, which can induce uniform Li deposition and prevent further side reaction. The all-solid-state Li/Li2S batteries based on this electrolyte exhibit remarkably enhanced cycling stability and rate performance.

Li 7 P 3 S 11 -based all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have received a lot of attention because of their potential for high energy density . However, the poor interfacial stability between Li 7 P 3 S 11 electrolyte and lithium metal anode hinders its application in ASSLMBs. Here, the Li-SnO 2 composite anode (LSO) was designed by treating the lithium metal with SnO 2 to produce an interface composed of Li 22 Sn 5 and Li 2 O phases. The rapid lithium ion diffusion coefficient of Li 22 Sn 5 alloy accelerates the migration of lithium ions at the interface, while the favorable lithiophilicity of Li 2 O induces the uniform deposition of lithium ions, which hinders the growth of lithium dendrites . Therefore, the symmetrical battery using an LSO anode showed a high critical current density (CCD) of 2.5 mA cm −2 at room temperature and a stable cycle of 350 h at room temperature at 0.2 mA cm −2 (0.2 mAh cm −2 ). In addition, the improved all-solid-state lithium battery also showed an ultra-stable cycle, and the NCM622/LPS/10LSO battery still maintained 78.6 % of its original capacity after 250 cycles at 0.5C. The surface treatment method of the LSO composite anode enables it to produce ASSLMB with excellent electrochemical performance .

The all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) with high energy density are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for next-generation lithium battery systems. Nevertheless, the low ionic and electronic conduction inside the cathode and the poor interfacial contact of the cathode/electrolyte seriously impede the large-scale application of ASSLBs . In this work, a novel multiple ion–electron conductive network is constructed on the FeS 2 cathode to realize a high-energy all-solid-state battery. The internal disordered carbon matrix acts as electronic network to accelerate the electronic transmission. Meanwhile, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) tightly wrapping FeS 2 /C microspheres’ surface serves as external electronic pathway. Moreover, the in-situ formed Li 7 P 3 S 11 electrolyte infiltrates into the nanoparticles to improve lithium-ion transport kinetics. Therefore, the dual-carbon framework and Li 7 P 3 S 11 coating layer strategies significantly enhance ion–electron transport kinetics and improve interfacial contact during cycling. As expected, the FeS 2 @C/rGO@Li 7 P 3 S 11 cathode exhibits excellent rate capability and cycling stability, showing a reversible discharge capacity of 350.3 mAh/g at 0.5C after 200 cycles. More importantly, ex-situ XPS and dQ/dV results reveal that the synergistic effect of dual-carbon frameworks and Li 7 P 3 S 11 coating layer not only provides fast electron–ion transfer channels, but also wraps the reaction products with poor electrochemical activity such as Fe 0 , FeS y , and S to accelerate the reaction kinetics and strengthens the reaction reversibility. This work provides valuable insights for improving the electrochemical performance and understanding the reaction mechanism of the conversion-type metal sulfide cathodes in ASSLBs .
