LiAl 1 − x Mg x O 2− x /2 ( x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) ceramic were prepared by conventional solid-phase reaction method. After X-ray diffraction analysis, a single-phase solid solution was formed in this system throughout the doping range. Through the oxygen vacancies formation by the replacement of Al 3+ with Mg 2+ , the relative density was increased from 94.33% to 96.1%. The dielectric constant ( ε r ) showed a trend of first enhancing and then decreasing with doping concentration. Their relationship mainly depended on the synergistic effect of relative density and dielectric polarizability. The improvement in the quality factor ( Q×f ) from 15,647 GHz to 34,507 GHz was attributed to the increased doping ratio and the strengthened covalent bonds. The change in the temperature coefficient of resonance frequency ( τ f ) was explained from the perspective of oxygen bonding valence. Excellent microwave properties were ε r = 6.59, Q×f = 34,507 GHz, and τ f = -115.8 ppm/°C for LiAl 0.97 Mg 0.03 O 1.985 ceramic at 1325 °C for 5 h.

Poor ion and high electron transport at the grain boundaries (GBs) of ceramic electrolytes are the primary reasons for lithium filament infiltration and short-circuiting of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASLMBs). Herein, it is discovered that Li 2 CO 3 at the GBs of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) sheets is reduced to highly electron-conductive LiC x during cycling, resulting in lithium penetration of LLZO. The ionic and electronic conductivity of the GBs within LLZO can be simultaneously tuned using sintered Li 3 AlF 6 . The generated LiAlO 2 (LAO) infusion and F-doping at the GBs of LLZO (LAO-LLZOF) significantly reduce the Li 2 CO 3 content and broaden the energy bandgap of LLZO, which decreases the electronic conductivity of LAO-LLZOF. LAO forms a 3D continuous ion transport network at the GB that significantly improves the total ionic conductivity. Lithium penetration within LLZO is suppressed and an all-solid-state LiFePO 4 /LAO-LLZOF/Li battery stably cycled for 5500 cycles at 3 C. This work reveals the chemistry of Li 2 CO 3 at the LLZO GBs during cycling, presents a novel lithium penetration mechanism within garnet electrolytes, and provides an innovative method to simultaneously regulate the ion and electron transport at the GBs in garnet electrodes for advanced ASLMBs.

Surface coating is an efficient way to reduce side reactions between cathode materials and electrolytes, thus enhancing the cycle stability of cathode materials. In this study, a novel surface-coating strategy based on the melt curing process is introduced, which forms an ionic conductive LiAlO 2 layer on the surface of LiCoO 2 /LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode materials and enhances the cycle stability of these cathode materials. Comprehensive characterizations, including scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirm the uniformity and thin LiAlO 2 coating. Electrochemical performance tests show better cycle performance of LiCoO 2 with 1% LiAlO 2 coating. An 85% capacity can be retained over 200 cycles at 1C and 4.5 V cutoff, compared to 61% for uncoated LiCoO 2 . For LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , the coated sample shows 94.5% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1C, while the capacity of the uncoated sample decays to 64.6% under the same condition. These findings underscore the effectiveness and universality of this surface-coating strategy. Graphical In this study, a novel surface-coating strategy based on a melt curing process is proposed, which forms an ion-conductive LiAlO 2 coating layer on the surface of LiCoO 2 cathode materials. TEM combined with EDS, XPS, etc. confirms the uniform thin layer LiAlO 2 coating, while the electrochemistry measurements prove the high stability of LiCoO 2 with LiAlO 2 coating.

The solid-phase method was utilized to synthesize LiAl 1- x Be x O 2- x /2 and LiAl 1- x Ga x O 2 ceramics. By Phillips-Van Vechten-Levine (P-V-L) theory, a strong correlation between chemical bond characteristics and microwave dielectric properties was established. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that all components formed single-phase solid solution with tetragonal structure. Using Be 2+ and Ga 3+ as substitutes, the differences in ionic radii produced diametrically opposite changes in cell volume. The relative density increased to 97.61 % (98.57 %) with the addition of Be 2+ (Ga 3+ ). According to the P-V-L theory, the variation of ε r was influenced by bond ionization. The introduction of different ions caused bond lengths variations, which in turn affected the lattice energy fluctuations. Importantly, this change more than doubled Q×f from 16,268 GHz to 37,015 GHz. Furthermore, the evolution of τ f can be elucidated by the bond energy. Sintered at 1250 °C, both LiAl 0.96 Be 0.04 O 1.98 and LiAl 0.98 Ga 0.02 O 2 demonstrated outstanding microwave dielectric properties, characterized by ε r = 5.83–6.08, Q×f = 32,727∼37,015 GHz, and τ f = −134.8∼-112.4 ppm/°C.

LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM) is a highly potential cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its poor rate capability and cycling performance at high cutoff voltages have seriously hindered further commercialization. In this study, we successfully design an ultra-thin lithium aluminum oxide (LiAlO 2 ) coating on NCM for LIBs. Compared to Al 2 O 3 , the utilization of lithium-ion conducting LiAlO 2 significantly improves the NCM performance at high cutoff voltages of 4.5/4.7 V. The study reveals that the LiAlO 2 -coated NCM can maintain a reversible capacity of more than 149 mA h g −1 after 350 cycles with 0.078% decay per cycle. Furthermore, LiAlO 2 -coated NCM exhibits higher rate capacities [206.8 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C (50 mA g −1 ) and 142 mA h g −1 at 3 C] than the Al 2 O 3 -coated NCM (196.9 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C and 131.9 mA h g −1 at 3 C). Our study demonstrates that the ultra-thin LiAlO 2 coating is superior to Al 2 O 3 and significantly improves the capacity retention and rate capability of NCM for LIBs.

Mullite-corundum saggars serve as essential containers for sintering lithium-ion cathode materials. However, these saggars are prone to reacting with cathode materials at elevated temperatures of 700-1100 o C, causing both structural degradation of saggars and the performance deterioration of cathode materials. Herein, the mullite-corundum saggar, which was coated with 6 wt% of LiAlO₂ and sintered at 1260 °C, exhibited optimal overall properties, including an apparent porosity of 17.56%, a cold modulus of rupture of 28.98 MPa, and a residual strength rate of 85.54%. Furthermore, the optimized mullite-corundum saggar with LiAlO 2 -based composite layer has significantly better corrosion resistance than the pristine one. During the sintering processes at 1260 °C, the formation of Li 2 O·Al 2 O 3 ·nSiO 2 phase enhances the bonding at the aggregate-matrix interface, which simultaneously suppresses the penetration and diffusion of Li 2 O, retards the reaction between the cathode material and the mullite-corundum saggar components, and finally improves corrosion resistance of the mullite-corundum saggar.

The practical applications of silicon (Si) anode is limited by its severe volume expansion, sluggish Li + transport, interfacial side reactions, and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). Beyond the known capacity loss from SEI formation and “dead” Li x Si domains insulated by solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, the kinetically trapped electro-active lithium in Li x Si—a frequently overlooked factor—also critically limits ICE and Li + transport. Herein, we construct a mechanically robust and Li + -conductive artificial LiAlO 2 interphase on Si surface via an evaporation-controlled hydrolysis, followed by an in situ chemical prelithiation, and a thermal annealing process. Calculations show that the LiAlO 2 /Si interface facilitates the interfacial Li + diffusion by lowering the Li + migration barrier from 0.90 to 0.31 eV. Benefiting from the improved interfacial stability and enhanced Li + transport kinetics, the Si@LiAlO 2 anode reduces the capacity loss from trapped active Li, trapped inactive Li, and SEI Li consumption to 2.3%, 0.3%, and 10.4%, respectively (vs 10.8%, 1.5%, and 16.8% for pristine Si). Consequently, Si@LiAlO 2 delivers a high capacity of 3020.2 mAh g −1 with a high ICE of 87.1% at 0.2 A g −1 , far exceeding 70.9% of Si anode. The Si@LiAlO 2 anode also exhibits excellent rate capability (809.1 mAh g −1 at 8 A g −1 ), and remarkable cycling durability (980 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 4 A g −1 , 80.1% capacity retention). Furthermore, incorporating 10 wt% Si@LiAlO 2 can enhance the energy density of the LiFePO 4 ||graphite full cell by 25%, underscoring its promising potential for practical high-energy-density LIBs.
