In order to investigate the influences of the additive (KF) on electrochemistry and deposit morphology of Pr, various electrochemical techniques were used to comparative investigate the electroreduction potential and diffusion coefficient of Pr 3+ and kinetic properties of Pr 3+ /Pr in LiCl–KCl-PrCl 3 before and after the addition of KF at different molar concentration ratios of F − to Pr 3+ ( k ). Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and reverse chronopotentiometry results showed that the value of k ( k = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) had no effect on reduction mechanism of Pr 3+ . With the increase of k , the reduction peak potential moved in the negative direction, the diffusion coefficient decreased, and diffusion activate energy increased. Meanwhile, the exchanged current densities ( j 0 ), charge transfer resistances ( R ct ), and activate energies ( E a ) were measured at different k by linear polarization technique, which illustrated that with the increase of k , j 0 gradually decreased, and E a and R ct increased. Furthermore, the electrochemical preparation of Pr aided by KF was explored by potentiostatic electrolysis at different k , and the products were characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDS, which indicated that with the increase of k , the morphology of metallic Pr changed from slender needles to granular. The electrochemical behavior of Th(IV) on a bismuth electrode in LiCl–KCl eutectic was investigated by various electrochemical techniques , aiming at in-depth elucidation of basic electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of Th in molten salt . The results of cyclic voltammetry and coulometric titration indicated that the reduction of Th(IV) on a liquid Bi electrode occurred at −0.92 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and was a one-step process with four electrons transferred. In addition, thermodynamic properties of Th in liquid Bi medium were evaluated by coulometric titration method in the temperature range from 723 to 798 K. The redox peaks of Bi 2 Th intermetallic compound were detected at −1.13 and −1.05 V, and the corresponding Gibbs free energy of formation was measured by open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP). Finally, galvanostatic electrolysis (GE) was conducted on a liquid Bi electrode to extract Th from molten salt at 773 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) were applied to characterize the composition and morphology of the products, and revealed the formation of Bi 2 Th intermetallic compound.

An electrochemical method was developed for the formation of Al-Cu alloys. The electrodeposition of aluminum on Mo and Cu substrates was studied using cyclic voltammetry in molten LiCl-KCl-AlCl 3 (2 wt.%). During the cathodic scan of the cyclic voltammograms, three different Al-Cu alloys were observed before pure Al formed on the Cu substrate. The electrochemical formation processes were studied using square wave voltammetry and open circuit chronopotentiometry. The products of the different reduction processes were identified using XRD. The XRD results indicated that three different Al-Cu intermetallic compounds, Al 4 Cu 9 , AlCu, and Al 2 Cu, were obtained using electrochemical deposition in the molten salt system.

The electrochemical behavior of Pr(III) and formation process of Pr-Al intermetallics were investigated by different electrochemical methods. The reduction of Pr(III) ion to metallic Pr is an one-step three-electrons reaction. The reversibility of Pr(III)/Pr(0) system was evaluated by cyclic voltammograms with different scan rates. The co-reduction of Pr(III) and Al(III) ions formed three different Pr-Al intermetallics at electrode potentials around −1.40, −1.80, and −1.95 V vs. Ag/AgCl at 723 K, respectively. Open-circuit chronopotentiometry and electromotive force (emf) measurements were carried out to estimate the relative molar Gibbs energies of Pr for the formation of different Pr-Al intermetallics in the temperature range of 723–843 K. The activities of Pr in the Pr-Al intermetallic compounds were calculated.

The electrorefining of spent nuclear fuels in a molten LiCl-KCl salt electrolyte recovers the valuable actinides but also releases radioactive fission products in the salt. To minimize the nuclear waste volume, dissolved fission products such as rare earths (REs) must be removed from the electrorefining salt and immobilized into proper wasteforms. Here we propose a two-step approach for treating the electrorefining waste salt by (i) the electrolytic recovery of REs from the salt using a liquid metal cathode; and subsequent (ii) oxidative extraction of REs from the liquid metal into durable wasteforms. Experimental demonstration using rare earth element samarium (Sm) and liquid metal (Bi) was successful. The Sm ions dissolved in the salt can be selectively recovered as dendrite Sm-Bi intermetallic products on the top of liquid bismuth cathode through electrolysis at appropriate applied currents or potentials. Then the Sm in the Sm-Bi alloy was efficiently extracted into both zinc-in-titania (ZIT) glass ceramic and lanthanide aluminoborosilicate (LABS) glass wasteforms through selective oxidation at Sm 2 O 3 loadings of 18–25 wt% and 50 wt%, respectively. Recycling of the electrorefining salt with minimum nuclear waste generation is foreseeable with the use of this simple, efficient, and highly compatible process.

This present work evaluates the local structure and electrochemical behavior of the LiCl-KCl-SmCl 3 melt to facilitate the efficient reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). At 723 K, the radial distribution function, coordination number, and structure factors were adopted to understand the local structure of LiCl-KCl and LiCl-KCl-SmCl 3 based on first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulation. We found the SmCl 3 slight effect on LiCl-KCl melts in short-range order and its influence on the distribution of Li-Li intermediate-range order. Moreover, the diffusion coefficient of Sm(III) 2.012 × 10 -5 cm 2 /s in LiCl-KCl melts was determined by analyzing the mean square displacement. The electrochemical behavior of Sm(III) was conducted in the temperature range from 673 K to 823 K by a series of electrochemical methods. According to the theory of Matsuda and Ayabe, the Sm(III) + e - = Sm(II) is a quasi-reversible process. The diffusion coefficient of Sm(III) was measured by the chronoamperometry method, which verified the credibility of the FPMD simulation. Furthermore, this work explored the exchange current density of Sm(III)/Sm(II), whose value is between 0.826 × 10 -3 and 2.383 × 10 -3 A·cm −2 , by the linear polarization.

With the growing demand for europium (Eu) in advanced fields such as opto-electronics and nuclear technology, developing efficient extraction methods has become increasingly crucial. This paper focuses on the electro-extraction of europium in LiCl-KCl molten salt, employing Sn and Sn Zn electrodes. The electrochemical behavior of Eu(III) on the Sn electrode in the molten salt system was investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry (CP), and open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP) techniques. The results reveal that the reduction of Eu(III) to Eu occurs Eu(III) + e − → Eu(II) and Eu(II) + 2e − + mSn → EuSn m . Furthermore, the electrochemical behaviors of LiCl-KCl-ZnCl 2 -SnCl 2 on the W electrode revealed a peak for the Zn-Sn-Eu alloy. The exchange current density and reaction activation energy of Eu(II)/Eu were calculated on the liquid Sn and Sn Zn electrode through the polarization curve. Subsequently, constant current electrolysis was carried out using Sn and Sn Zn electrodes to extract Eu, and the extraction effect of Eu using a Zn Sn electrode is far superior to that using a Sn electrode. The extracted products were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and the concentration of Eu(III) in molten salt at different times was detected by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and the extraction efficiency under different conditions was calculated and the valence state changes of Eu during electrolysis on different electrodes were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

To electrodeposit uranium dioxide from LiCl–KCl molten salt containing Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ , a series of electrochemical techniques were employed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of UO 2 2+ , Cr 3+ , and Ni 2+ . CV and SWV measurements revealed that Cr 3+ is reduced to metallic Cr through a two-step process, while Ni 2+ undergoes a one-step, two-electron process to form metallic Ni. UO 2 2+ is reduced to uranium dioxide via two successive one-electron transfer steps, and its reduction mechanism remains unaffected by the presence of Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ . Chronoamperometry was employed to study the influence of Cr 3+ on the nucleation mechanism of UO 2 2+ , which indicated that the addition of Cr 3+ could decrease the nucleation density of uranium dioxide. In addition, the effects of Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ on the electrodeposition of uranium dioxide were separately explored. In the presence of Cr 3+ , the deposited product contained only uranium dioxide and no Cr was deposited, but the current efficiency was reduced. Pulse electrolysis was carried out and found that current efficiency could be improved by pulse electrolysis in the presence of Cr 3+ . The introduction of Ni 2+ led to the co-deposition of uranium dioxide and Ni, while significantly accelerating the extraction rate of uranium dioxide. Thermodynamic analysis and experimental results indicate that this enhancement arises from the in situ reduction of UO 2 2+ by the deposited Ni, a process that proceeds much faster than the direct electrochemical reduction of UO 2 2+ .

As a typical uranium oxide , the electrochemical behaviors of U 3 O 8 in molten salt have attracted many research endeavors, but its dissolution behavior and related mechanism in molten salt has been less well understood. In this work, we reported the dissolution of U 3 O 8 in LiCl-KCl eutectic with the assistance of NH 4 Cl, which has potential significance for the pyrochemical reprocessing of spent oxide fuels. The spectroscopic techniques such as fluorescence emission spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy , and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) were used to determine the chemical species during the dissolution process of U 3 O 8 . The results show that U 3 O 8 can be completely dissolved in molten salt under the air atmosphere, and it exists in the form of [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 2− . In contrast, under an argon atmosphere , the soluble [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 3− and insoluble UO 2 were detected as the main products.

Investigating electrochemical behavior of lanthanides in molten salt systems is of significant interest for advancing pyroprocessing. This study aims to elucidate the impact of Cs + addition on the electrochemical behavior of CeCl 3 in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. Several electrochemical methods, including square wave voltammetry (SWV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronopotentiometry (CP), open circuit potential (OCP), and linear polarization (LP), were employed to determine the electron transfer number, reversibility, diffusion coefficient, equilibrium potential, and exchange current density. The results show that Cs⁺ has no significant effect on the electron transfer number or the reversibility of the Ce 3+ /Ce reaction. However, the equilibrium potential of Ce 3+ /Ce redox couple shifts negatively with increasing Cs⁺ concentration. Moreover, Cs⁺ led to a reduction of approximately 19.3% in the diffusion coefficient (determined by CP) and an 11.1% decrease in the exchange current density. The relationship between viscosity and diffusion coefficient was further elucidated through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Summary To recover Pr from molten chlorides, the electrode reactions of Pr 3+ on Sn-coated W and liquid Sn electrodes were studied by a group of electrochemical techniques. CV and SWV results exhibited that the electrochemical signals pertaining to the formation of Pr-Sn alloy compounds and solid solution appeared at less negative potentials than that of Pr 3+ on W electrode. The thermodynamic data of Pr-Sn alloy compounds and the kinetic parameters for PrSn 3 /Pr 3+ pair were determined employing OCP, LP, and Tafel methods, separately. The measured diffusion coefficient ( D ) of Pr in liquid Sn metal was 9.40 × 10 −6 cm 2 s −1 . Furthermore, the electrochemical recovering Pr from molten salt was performed using liquid Sn as a working electrode, and the formed Pr-Sn samples characterized by XRD and SEM-EDS were composed of Sn and PrSn 3 phases.

For UO 2 -based spent fuel , it is usually electrochemically reduced and then refined in molten salt with respect to the so-called pyrochemical reprocessing approach. In this work, we report a new method with the assistance of NH 4 Cl to directly achieve convenient separation of UO 2 over La 2 O 3 in Ar atmosphere which does not require an electrochemical process . According to the results from both powder and pellet samples, the separation is achieved by dissolving La 2 O 3 into the LiCl–KCl molten salt with NH 4 Cl, whilst UO 2 cannot be dissolved and remains in solid form. It was found that the dissolution kinetics of La 2 O 3 in the powder sample was fast and its removal efficiency in the mixture of La 2 O 3 and UO 2 was high, but a specific amount of UO 2 was also dissolved, which lead to a low recovery efficiency of UO 2 . In contrast, when the pellet samples after sintering at 1473 K were used, the recovery efficiency of UO 2 can be increased. Nevertheless, the dissolution kinetics of La 2 O 3 was correspondingly reduced, and more NH 4 Cl was required to complete the dissolution reaction . By improving and optimizing the experimental conditions, the UO 2 recovery efficiency of 92.0% can be achieved, while the removal efficiency of La 2 O 3 was 94.4%. More importantly, this novel separation method may be also useful for the separation of UO 2 over mixed lanthanide oxides.
