Increasing interest in LiCoO 2 as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries has recently arisen due to its high operating voltage, high energy density and long cycle life. However, irreversible structural damage and severe side reactions at high cut-off voltages severely deteriorate the electrochemical performance of LiCoO 2 materials, resulting in a series of safety issues when used in batteries. In this work, PrPO 4 , Li 2 CO 3 and Co 3 O 4 are mixed and then treated at a high temperature to obtain PrPO 4 -modified LiCoO 2 with improved electrochemical performance at 4.55 V. XRD and Rietveld refinement results confirm that the modified LiCoO 2 materials exhibit well-ordered structures with compact unit cells. PrPO 4 is not incorporated into the crystal lattice of LiCoO 2 but converted by Li 2 O and Co 3 O 4 into PrCoO 3 and Li 3 PO 4 phases during the reaction. Additionally, these two phases are well-incorporated into the LiCoO 2 particle. Electrochemical tests indicate that the irreversible capacity during cycling is significantly reduced by PrPO 4 modification. Benefiting from the enhanced interface stability induced by Li 3 PO 4 and PrCoO 3 , the 1 mol% PrPO 4 -modified LiCoO 2 sample exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 185 mAhg −1 at 0.5C with a capacity retention of 92.4% after 100 cycles, as well as an excellent rate capability with a capacity of 128 mAhg −1 even at 5C.

LiCoO 2 nanoparticles were prepared through a sol–gel method, and then appropriate amount of CuO nanoparticles were deposited onto their surfaces to improve their cycling performances. It is found that the CuO coated sample has the capacity retention higher than 90% at the rates below 30 C after 10 cycles, which also has the highest capacities of 135 and 123 mAh g −1 at 40 C (5480 mA g −1 ) and 50 C (6850 mA g −1 ), respectively. The cyclic voltammograms result reveals that the CuO coating reduces the polarization and improves the electrochemical activity of cathode. In addition, experimental results indicate that CuO coating plays an important role in reducing the charge transfer resistance of the cell during cycling, which has been demonstrated by the electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy analysis. The above data indicate the potential application of CuO coated LiCoO 2 in high power field.

Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles are employed as a coating material to optimize the electrochemical performance of LiCoO 2 at high voltage. When the current rate is 1 C with the cutoff potential at 4.5 V, the 5 wt.% Fe 2 O 3 -coated LiCoO 2 delivers an initial capacity of 168.7 mAh g −1 . More importantly, its capacity retention after 50 cycles reaches up to 92.6%, whereas the value for pristine LiCoO 2 is only 58.5%. The electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy analysis demonstrates that Fe 2 O 3 coating plays an important role in decreasing the charge transfer resistance of cell. Compared with the performance of the Fe 2 O 3 -mixed and Fe-doped LiCoO 2 samples, it is found that the role of Fe 2 O 3 coating is unique, which may change the characteristic of the surface of LiCoO 2 particles. This technique may provide an effective and convenient way for optimizing other electrode materials .

Extending the charging voltage of LiCoO 2 (LCO) is an ongoing and promising approach to increase its energy density. However, the main challenge of the approach lies in the insuperable cathodic interfacial processes at high voltage, which leads to rapid failure both in the performance and structure of the LCO cathode. Herein, a Li 2 CO 3 -based additive was prepared by a simple sand-milling method, enabling a low electrochemical decomposition voltage <4.6 V from commonly >4.8 V, stabilizing the interface of the LCO cathode at 4.6 V. The decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 provides extra Li + and CO 2 to supplement the Li consumption required in the initial irreversible interfacial reactions and rapidly form a uniform and stable cathode electrolyte interphase layer (less organic and more inorganic components) on the LCO cathode by reducing CO 2 . Thus, the phase transformation and the emergence of high-valent Co ions on the surface of LCO at 4.6 V high voltage were inhibited. Thanks to this, with 2% Li 2 CO 3 -based additive, the capacity retention of commercial LCO at a high voltage of 4.6 V at 0.5 C for 100 cycles was improved from 59.3% to 79.3%. This work improves the high-voltage stability of LCO and provides a new idea for realizing the high-voltage operation of batteries.

Doping lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) cathode materials is an effective strategy for mitigating the detrimental phase transitions that occur at high voltages. A deep understanding of the relationships between cycle capacity and the design elements of doped LiCoO2is critical for overcoming the existing research limitations. The key lies in constructing a robust and interpretable mapping model between data and performance. In this study, we analyze the correlations between the features and cycle capacity of 158 different element-doped LiCoO2systems by using five advanced machine learning algorithms. First, we conducted a feature election to reduce model overfitting through a combined approach of mechanistic analysis and Pearson correlation analysis. Second, the experimental results revealed that RF and XGBoost are the two best-performing models for data fitting. Specifically, the RF and XGBoost models have the highest fitting performance for IC and EC prediction, with R2values of 0.8882 and 0.8318, respectively. Experiments focusing on ion electronegativity design verified the effectiveness of the optimal combined model. We demonstrate the benefits of machine learning models in uncovering the core elements of complex doped LiCoO2formulation design. Furthermore, these combined models can be employed to search for materials with superior electrochemical performance and processing conditions. In the future, we aim to develop more accurate and efficient machine learning algorithms to explore the microscopic mechanisms affecting doped layered oxide cathode material design, thereby establishing new paradigms for the research of high-performance cathode materials for lithium batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid state batteries is one of the most attractive candidates for next-generation high performance energy storage devices, especially when it matches the LiCoO 2 cathode of high volumetric energy density. However, cathode/electrolyte interface reactions will be triggered at high voltage, leading to high interfacial resistance and fast capacity decay. In this work, a selected ionic liquid , 1-methyl-1-propylpiperidinium tetrafluoroborate (PP 13 BF 4 ), is prepared and applied in LiCoO 2 electrode operating at high work voltages of 3.0–4.3 V to regulate the interface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and holding test indicate that facilitated by the PP 13 BF 4 , the cathode/electrolyte interfacial reaction is effectively suppressed and the resistance is reduced. When an optimal content, 2 wt%, PP 13 BF 4 is added into the LiCoO 2 electrode, the solid-state lithium metal cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 125.1 mAh g −1 under the current density of 0.05 C at 55 °C, which is almost twice that of bare electrode. Meantime, it retains 76.3% of its capacity in 100 cycles under 0.2 C rate. Further characterizations illustrate that PP 13 BF 4 participates in the formation of a protective CEI, which effectively suppresses parasitic reactions between electrolyte and electrode. This work provides a facile and practical idea for the development of 4 V class solid state lithium metal batteries .

A sol–gel tandem with a solid-phase modification procedure was developed to synthesize Li 2 TiO 3 -doped LiCoO 2 together with phosphate coatings (denoted as LCO-Ti/P), which possesses excellent high-voltage performance in the range of 3.0–4.6 V. The characterizations of X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy illustrated that the modified sample LCO-Ti/P had the dopant of monoclinic Li 2 TiO 3 and amorphous Li 3 PO 4 coating layers. LCO-Ti/P has an initial discharge capacity of 211.6 mAh/g at 0.1 C and a retention of 85.7% after 100 cycles at 1 C and 25 ± 1 °C between 3.0 and 4.6 V. Nyquist plots reflect that the charge transfer resistance of LCO-Ti/P after 100 cycles at 1 C is much lower than that of the spent LCO, which benefits Li-ion diffusion. Density functional theory calculations disclose the superior lattice-matching property of major crystal planes for Li 2 TiO 3 and LiCoO 2 , the lower energy barriers for Li-ion diffusion in Li 2 TiO 3 , and the suppressed oxygen release performance resulting from phosphate adsorption. This work provides useful guidance on the rational design of the high-voltage performance of modified LiCoO 2 materials in terms of lattice-matching properties aside from the phosphate coating to reduce the energy barriers of Li-ion diffusion and enhance cycling stability.

Lithium cobalt oxide is one of the most popular cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Due to its relatively low capacity, increasing the output voltage is often necessary to release more capacity. However, subjecting cathode materials to high charging potentials inevitably induces surface-side reactions, compromising the integrity of the crystal structure and accelerating capacity degradation. Therefore, the stability of cathode materials at high voltage becomes crucial for lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we employed the ternary compound KAlF 4 (KAF) as a surface modification coating for LiCoO 2 (LCO). With the optimized ratio (1 wt%) of KAF, coated LCO cathodes exhibited enhanced capacity retention, excellent cycling, and rate stability. In the high voltage range of 3.0–4.6 V, the specific capacity of the initial discharge at a rate of 0.5 C reached 198.30 mA h g −1 . Remarkably, the coated LCO retained 91.56 % of its initial capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. Even at a high rate of 5 C, the coated sample retained a discharge capacity of 120.87 mA h g −1 , significantly higher than that of bare LCO (80.24 mA h g −1 ). After a thorough investigation into the structure changes before and after cycling, we elucidated the mechanism of KAF coating in improving the stability of high-voltage LCO cathodes. The results indicated that KAF forms a stable passivation layer on the surface of LCO, which suppresses cracking and corrosion during charging and discharging, eventually stabilizes the crystal structure, and enhances the cycling stability of LCO.

Increasing the charging cutoff voltage is a viable approach to push the energy density limits of LiCoO2 and meet the requirements of the rapid development of 3C electronics. However, an irreversible oxygen redox is readily triggered by the high charging voltage, which severely restricts practical applications of high-voltage LiCoO2. In this study, we propose a modification strategy via suppressing surface ligand-to-metal charge transfer to inhibit the oxygen redox-induced structure instability. A d0 electronic structure Zr4+ is selected as the charge transfer insulator and successfully doped into the surface lattice of LiCoO2. Using a combination of theoretical calculations, ex situ X-ray absorption spectra, and in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry analysis, our results show that the modified LiCoO2 exhibits suppressed oxygen redox activity and stable redox electrochemistry. As a result, it demonstrates a robust long-cycle lattice structure with a practically eliminated voltage decay (0.17 mV/cycle) and an excellent capacity retention of 89.4% after 100 cycles at 4.6 V. More broadly, this work provides a new perspective on suppressing the oxygen redox activity through modulating surface ligand-to-metal charge transfer for achieving a stable high-voltage ion storage structure.

Although improving the charging cutoff voltage is an effective strategy to increase its capacity, LiCoO2 (LCO) undergoes rapid capacity decay due to severe structure and interface degradation at high voltages. Herein, we proposed a multifunctional surface modification by coating nano-sized high-entropy materials (Li-La-Ti-Zr-Co-O, Nano-MEO). Nano-MEO rivets are constructed on the surface of LCO, which stabilizes the fragile surface. Besides, Ti enriched on the surface induced a stable and thin CEI, promoting Li+ diffusion across the interface. Meanwhile, the diffusion of La and Zr into the LCO bulk phase effectively improves the transportation of Li+ and suppresses irreversible phase transition. Consequently, LCO modified by Nano-MEO exhibits excellent capacity retention of 84% after 100 cycles at 4.55 V. Therefore, the coating of high-entropy materials with the advantages of multi-element synergy, increases the degree of freedom for the modulation of electronic and crystal structure, which is instructive for the development of high-voltage LCO.

Various electrolyte additives are developed to construct a cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer for high-voltage LiCoO 2 since the cathode suffers severe interfacial degradation when increasing the cut-off voltage over 4.55 V. However, the CEI derived from the additive sacrificial reaction faces the risk of rupture due to the corrosion reaction and the volumetric variation of the cathode. Herein, a non-passivating cathode interface is realized for 4.6 V LiCoO 2 with a non-sacrificial electrolyte additive (TBAClO 4 ) by regulating the solvent environment at the interface rather than the preferential decomposition for CEI formation. Owing to the novel protection mechanism, the cell performance shows little dependence on the CEI-formation process. Therefore, an ultra-high initial coulombic efficiency (96.63%) and excellent cycling stability (81% capacity retention after 300 cycles) are achieved in Li||LiCoO 2 batteries. Moreover, even with the electrolyte containing 1000 ppm H 2 O, the remarkable water capture ability of the additive together with its interfacial regulation enables the 4.6 V Li||LiCoO 2 battery to retain 80% capacity after 200 cycles. This non-sacrificial strategy provides new insights into high-voltage electrolyte additive design for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.

LiCoO 2 is the dominantly used cathode material in lithium-ion batteries. However, its high-rate capacity and cyclability are limited, especially under high charging voltages, mainly due to the high Li + diffusion barrier . To solve it, we purpose a doping scheme based on two foreign elements: one is with tremendously large ionic radius and weak electronegativity , and the other one has an ionic radius slightly larger than Co, an electronegativity a little weaker than Co, and a high binding energy with O. Ba and Ga are chosen according to this criterion, and their doping effects are compared with that of La and Al. Briefly, Ba is superior to La in weakening the attraction of O 2- to Li + because of its weaker electronegativity and larger ionic radius. Meanwhile, Ga is more capable of enhancing the structural stability at high voltages than Al mainly due to its higher binding energy with O. LiCo 0.998 Ba 0.001 Ga 0.001 O 2 increases Li + diffusivity from 0.77 × 10 -14 to 1.06 × 10 –13 cm 2 ∙s -1 , resulting in a significantly enhanced rate capacity of 114.3 mAh g -1 at 10 C, much better than pristine counterpart (1.6 mAh∙g -1 ). Additionally, it exhibits a particularly high capacity of 199.3 mAh g -1 , and 85% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 0.5 C in 3.0–4.5 V.
