Achieving a reversible four-electron-per-oxygen-molecule oxygen evolution reaction is an essential yet highly challenging task for nonaqueous lithium hydroxide-based Li | |O 2 batteries, as the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction tends to entangle with competing parasitic reactions, whose origins and mitigating strategies remain largely elusive. Here we construct a highly reversible lithium hydroxide-based Li | |O 2 battery using iron–cobalt–nickel layered double hydroxide catalysts and tetramethylene sulfone-based electrolytes. Lithium hydroxide decomposition toward oxygen evolution involves key reactive oxygen species of surface-bound hydroxyl and hydroxyl radicals, but no singlet oxygen. These hydroxyl species corrode the electrolyte and carbon support, predominantly accounting for charging irreversibility. While oxidation-resistant solvents and electrical conductors are necessary to reduce hydroxyl-induced side reactions, the synergistic interplay of interfacial water solvation and catalytic surface structures hold the key to steering hydroxyl activity toward the desirable oxygen evolution reaction or by-product formation. This work offers insights into achieving long-life lithium hydroxide-based Li | |O 2 batteries.

Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) as a discharge product with high conductivity and low overpotential in lithium-oxygen batteries (Li O 2 batteries) has received extensive attention. However, the incomplete decomposition of LiOH during the charge process remains a critical issue hindering the practical application of high-performance Li O 2 batteries. Developing suitable cathode catalysts is essential to address this challenge. Here, we constructed an Ag-regulated MnO cathode catalyst with disordered structure to promote LiOH decomposition, thereby improving the electrochemical performance. The introduction of Ag breaks the long-range ordered structure of MnO. Compared to that of MnO, the d-band center of Ag/MnO shifts downward from the Fermi level. This weakens the strong adsorption strength between the cathode and oxygen-containing intermediates, resulting in more moderate adsorption energy of these intermediates on the cathode surface, which facilitates the complete decomposition of discharge product. Additionally, the active sites of the Ag/MnO cathode remained stable, with LiOH decomposed completely. This work provides new insights into the development of efficient LiOH-decomposing cathode catalysts for Li O 2 batteries.

The hydrogenolysis of glycerol was performed over a Pt/C catalyst in combination with several alkali metal hydroxides and their salts. LiOH was found to be an effective promoter for the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol. Hydroxyl ions are the main factor to promote the reaction process by dehydration of the glyceraldehyde intermediate. Lithium ions play a role in assisting the dehydrogenation of glycerol to glyceraldehyde, because they have the right size to coordinate with the alkoxide species. A possible surface reaction mechanism involving the participation of lithium ions was proposed to account for the results obtained in the study.

Irreversible parasitic reactions and the resulting accumulation of insulating side products are main barriers for practical application of rechargeable lithium–oxygen (Li O 2 ) batteries . Therefore, it is critical to develop multifunctional oxygen electrodes suitable for oxygen reduction reaction , oxygen evolution reaction , and decomposition of side reaction products. Here we report the application of ultrafine ruthenium on boron carbide (Ru/B 4 C) with highly efficient multifunctional activities as carbon-free oxygen electrodes for Li O 2 batteries. Li 2 CO 3 and LiOH can be completely decomposed by Ru/B 4 C at 4.0 V and 4.1 V, respectively, within the stability window of the electrolyte. A Li O 2 battery using the Ru/B 4 C oxygen electrode achieves low overpotentials for Li O 2 reactions, and excellent cycling performance under the capacities of 300 and 500 mAh g −1 Ru/B4C . In-situ gas chromatography analysis reveals that O 2 is the major gas product during charging. Only a negligible amount of CO 2 is observed in the first charging process. Therefore, Ru/B 4 C can be a very promising oxygen-electrode material for Li O 2 batteries and Li–air batteries operated in ambient air.

Recycling lithium from spent batteries is challenging because of problems with poor purity and contamination. Here, we propose a green and sustainable lithium recovery strategy for spent batteries containing LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrodes. Our proposed configuration of “lithium-rich electrode || LLZTO@LiTFSI+P3HT || LiOH” system achieves double-side and roll-to-roll recycling of lithium-containing electrode without destroying its integrity. The LiTFSI+P3HT-modified LLZTO membrane also solves the H+/Li+ exchange problem and realizes a waterproof protection of bare LLZTO in the aqueous working environment. On the basis of these advantages, our system shows high Li selectivity (97%) and excellent Faradaic efficiency (≥97%), achieving high-purity (99%) LiOH along with the production of H2. The Li extraction processes for spent LiFePO4, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, and LiCoO2 batteries is shown to be economically feasible. Therefore, this study provides a previously unexplored technology with low energy consumption as well as high economic and environmental benefits to realize sustainable lithium recycling from spent batteries.

La/Pr co-doped ceria (LCP) is processed to fabricate low-temperature ceramic fuel cell based on industrial-grade rare-earth carbonate electrolyte that is reached above a maximum power density of 750 mW/cm 2 at 520 °C. The charge carriers are investigated through LCP fuel cell having symmetric NCAL (Ni 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 LiO 2-δ ) electrodes using proton conductor BCZY (BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.2 O 3-δ ) as a blocking layer and are found protons that dominate during the cell operation. The results of associated characterizations for HCC (hydrogen concentration cell) and the OCC (oxygen concentration cell) reveal that LCP material is mixed conductor of both protons and oxygen ions simultaneously. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis before and after the electrochemical testing of the cell are performed which show an amorphous layer of LiOH/Li 2 CO 3 mixture that is formed after the tests on the surface of LCP structure. Conceptually, it looks that LiOH/Li 2 CO 3 mixture in molten state in the interface region of two-phase material promotes the proton conduction through LCP electrolyte, with negligible oxygen ion conduction.

Garnet-type Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZO) is considered a promising solid electrolyte, but the surface degradation in air hinders its application for all-solid-state battery. Recent studies have mainly focused on the final products of the LLZO surface reactions due to lacking of powerful in situ characterization methods. Here, we use ambient pressure X-ray spectroscopies to in situ investigate the dynamical evolution of LLZO surface in different gas environments. The newly developed ambient pressure mapping of resonant Auger spectroscopy clearly distinguishes the lithium containing species, including LiOH, Li 2 O, Li 2 CO 3 and lattice oxygen. The reaction of CO 2 with LLZO to form Li 2 CO 3 is found to be a thermodynamically favored self-limiting reaction. On the contrary, the reaction of H 2 O with LLZO lags behind that of CO 2 , but intensifies at high pressure. More interestingly, the results provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the existence of Li + /H + exchange and reveal the importance of the initial layer formed on clean electrolyte surface in determining their air stability. This work demonstrates that the newly developed in situ technologies pave a new way to investigate the oxygen evolution and surface degradation mechanism in energy materials.
