A Concentrated Electrolyte of LiTFSI and Dimethyl Carbonate for High-Voltage Li Batteries

Yueqing Li,Zichen Wang,Wentao Lin,Bixia Wei,Dengjie Chen

Realizing the high energy density of lithium batteries depends significantly on creating an electrolyte suited for high-voltage operation and compatible with lithium metal. Generally, a high concentration of solvents within diluted electrolytes may readily form thick and susceptible solid electrolyte interphases, especially when encountering high-voltage operation and a lithium-metal anode. Herein, we present an electrolyte design by significantly increasing the LiTFSI salt concentration within the dimethyl carbonate (DMC) solvent to solve the interfacial incompatibility. The increased salt concentration not only leads to the ion association mode’s gradual evolution from a solvent-separated ion pair into a contact ion pair (CIP) but also enhances the oxidation stability. Although a CIP structure generally results in a relatively low ionic conductivity, the lack of free solvent molecules can enhance the compatibility between the designed electrolyte and electrodes. Furthermore, the concentrated 3.5 M LiTFSI electrolyte with DMC as the solvent still maintains a relatively low viscosity, e.g., ∼4.8 mPa s at 30 °C. As a result, LiFePO4 (LFP)//Li and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM)//Li cells with the 3.5 M LiTFSI electrolyte exhibit exceptional electrochemical performance. A constructed LFP//Li battery operates stably at 2.0 C for 200 cycles, with a retained discharge capacity of 115.4 mAh g–1, and a NCM//Li cell cycles stably from 2.0 to 4.2 V for 100 cycles. Even after raising the top cutoff voltage to 4.4 V vs Li/Li+, a NCM//Li cell still exhibits a discharge capacity of 89.3 mAh g–1 after 50 cycles at 1.0 C. Therefore, this LiTFSI/DMC-based concentrated electrolyte is promising for high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries.

Performance of “Polymer-in-Salt” Electrolyte PAN-LiTFSI Enhanced by Graphene Oxide Filler

Bo Wu,Liping Wang,Zhiling Li,Mingjuan Zhao,Kaihao Chen,Sihong Liu,Yunqiang Pu,Jingze Li

Exploring solid state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability is of prime importance for the development of safe batteries. In this study, we prepare a high-performance "polymer-in-salt" solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) by using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a host polymer, bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) as an electrolyte salt, and different loading graphene oxide (GO) as a nano-filler. PAN-LiTFSI electrolyte filled with 0.9 wt% GO nanosheet exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30°C, which is almost one order of magnitude higher than that of the filler-free one. In addition, the anodic potential and the lithium ion transference number also increase to 5 V and 0.4, respectively. The enhancement on ionic conductivity is attributed to a 3D fast ion transport network constructed by GO nanosheets and a further decoupling of ion transport from segmental dynamics.

Synergistic Cyclodextrin-LiTFSI Coating on LLZTO toward High Ionic Conductivity PVA-Based Composite Electrolytes

Meng Meng,Renli Fu,Keke Ma,Jingnan Yang,Yi Ding,Ran Lu,Xiang Li,Xuhai Liu

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-ionic liquid-Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) composite electrolyte (PIL) has drawn extensive research attention for lithium-ion batteries due to its high ionic conductivity. However, LLZTO tends to aggregate in PVA solution, which significantly impairs the lithium-ion transport rate within PIL. Herein, we coated the surface of LLZTO with a cylindrical cyclodextrin-LiTFSI (abbreviated as C-T) complex and systematically investigated the effects of the C-T coating and LLZTO content on the electrochemical performance of the PIL@C-T composite electrolyte. Specifically, when the LLZTO content is 60 wt %, the ionic conductivity of PIL@C-T can reach 4 × 10–3 S/cm. Based on lithium-ion transport mechanism analysis, we can conclude that the C-T coating can enhance the compatibility between LLZTO and the PVA matrix while constructing fast lithium-ion transport channels between LLZTO ceramic particles. Furthermore, the LiFePO4 | PIL@C-T | Li cell delivers a discharge capacity of 162 mAh/g, and its Coulombic efficiency can be maintained at approximately 100% after 200 cycles. This work provides a new strategy to develop high-performance composite electrolytes, which hold great potential for applications in advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Experimental and Molecular Insights into the Structure–Property Relationship of LiTFSI-Acetamide Eutectic Mixtures

Yuhang Fan,Qian Liu,Li Sun,Hongye Cheng,Long Chen,Zhiwen Qi,Zhen Song

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been more frequently applied in electrochemical energy storage due to their favorable physicochemical properties. Acetamide and its methylated derivatives are promising solvents for forming DESs with lithium salts. In this work, three representative systems, combined by LiTFSI and acetamide/N-methylacetamide/N,N-dimethylacetamide, are selected to assess their structure–property relationship involved in the solid–liquid equilibria (SLE), density, viscosity, conductivity, and electrochemical stability window (ESW). The SLE of three systems is first experimentally measured to reveal their eutectic behavior, and thereafter, the other four properties are experimentally determined around the eutectic composition. Molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations are performed to further investigate the microscopic properties of the mixtures. For the investigated systems, the coordination interaction, hydrogen-bonding interaction, and steric effect jointly affect the solvation structure of the electrolyte, leading to variations in these experimental properties. In the case of eutectic characteristics, density, viscosity, and conductivity, the relevant simulation results match the experimental data well; whereas, for the ESW, the microscopic analysis faces a challenge due to its association with chemical reaction pathways. These results provide a hybrid experimental and theoretical framework for identifying the structure–property relationship of DES systems, advancing rational electrolyte design.

Ionic liquid dopant for hole transporting layer towards efficient LiTFSI-free perovskite solar cells

Hao Zhu,Yanping Mo,Chao Wang,Jing Li,Congcong Tian,Yongtao Wen,Zhipeng Lin,Guomu Yu,Luqi Wang,Peiran Hou,Xiao-Li Zhang,Wei Li,Yi-Bing Cheng,Fuzhi Huang

Regarded as one of the best hole transporting material (HTM) for perovskite solar cells, 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis-(N,N-di-4-methoxyphenylamino)-9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) has suffered from instability induced by Lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Li-TFSI) hygroscopicity and aggregation. Herein, we replace Li-TFSI with the hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) 1-Butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (BMPIP-TFSI). The BMPIP-TFSI functions as a p -type dopant in the spiro-OMeTAD, increasing the hole mobility, promoting the conductivity and enhancing the moisture-resistance of HTM. The corresponding perovskite solar cells achieve a champion power conversion efficiency exceeding 23%. Furthermore, the un-encapsulated devices show enhanced stability under humid environment, retaining 85% of its initial efficiency after 500 h.

Synergistic enhancement of thermoelectric and mechanical performances of ionic liquid LiTFSI modulated PEDOT flexible films

Qikai Li,Manjiao Deng,Shuangmeng Zhang,Duokai Zhao,Qinglin Jiang,Chuanfei Guo,Qing Zhou,Weishu Liu

Flexible thermoelectric films have received increasing attentions due to their ability to generate power for use in vigorous wearable electronics and internet of things (IoT) sensors. In this study, synergistic enhancements in both the thermoelectric and mechanical performances of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based flexible thermoelectric films were obtained by utilizing the modulation effect of an ionic liquid (IL), in this case bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI). The electrical conductivity of the as-fabricated ionic liquid/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(styrenesulfonate) (IL/PEDOT:PSS) films increased from 5 S cm−1 (IL-free PEDOT) to nearly 1000 S cm−1 (PEDOT with 60 wt% IL content). Simultaneously, the thermoelectric power factor of the PEDOT thin film was boosted by nearly two orders from less than 1 μW m−1 K−2 to 75 μW m−1 K−2 due to the modulated electrical conductivity and enhanced Seebeck coefficient with increasing temperature. Furthermore, mechanical bending tests showed that the electrical conductivity change was less than 0.03% after 10 000 bending cycles, which is much better than that of the IL-free film, suggesting good bendability. The tensile test indicated enhancements in the tensile strain of free-standing films from less than 3% to more than 20% before and after adding LiTFSI into PEDOT:PSS. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman measurements demonstrated that the enhancements in both the thermoelectric and mechanical performances were related to the increased ordering structure due to the weak chemical bonding effect between PEDOT and the ILs. The as-prepared IL/PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric films have promising applications for wearable electronics.

LiTFSI-Free Hole Transport Materials for Robust Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules with High Efficiencies

Qinglong Zhu,Pin Lv,Yuxi Zhang,Yijie Wang,Gan Luo,Ziqi An,Min Hu,Kaiwen Hu,Wangnan Li,Feifei Yang,Bo Zhang,Zhiliang Ku,Yi-Bing Cheng,Jianfeng Lu

Lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonamide (LiTFSI) and oxygen-doped organic semiconductors have been frequently used to achieve record power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, this conventional doping process is time-consuming and leads to poor device stability due to the incorporation of Li ions. Herein, aiming to accelerate the doping process and remove the Li ions, we report an alternative p-doping process by mixing a new small-molecule organic semiconductor, N2,N2,N7,N7-tetrakis (4-methoxyphenyl)-9-(4-(octyloxy) phenyl)-9H carbazole-2,7-diamine (labeled OH44) and its preoxidized form OH44+(TFSI–). With this method, a champion efficiency of 21.8% has been achieved for small-area PSCs, which is superior to the state-of-the-art EH44 and comparable with LiTFSI and oxygen-doped spiro-OMeTAD. Moreover, the stability of OH44-based PSCs is improved compared with those of EH44, maintaining more than 85% of its initial efficiency after aging in an ambient condition without encapsulation for 1000 h. In addition, we achieved efficiencies of 14.7 and 12.6% for the solar modules measured with a metal mask of 12.0 and 48.0 cm2, respectively, which demonstrated the scalability of this method.

Acetonitrile-driven structural change of Li3InCl6 enables amorphization of PEO-LiTFSI for enhanced room-temperature performance

Weiye Ma,Lun Zhang,Guanghan Zhu,Hongrui Kang,Haiyang Yuan,Yongyi Long,Zhiyi Pan,Zhiqiang Liu,Xiaojing Liu,Jin Liang,Yuxin Liang,Zhenduo Cui,Shengli Zhu,Ying Zhao,Zhonghui Gao

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state batteries but are typically limited to elevated temperatures due to PEO crystallinity and strong Li⁺–EO coordination. Here, we report a homogeneous PEO–LiTFSI electrolyte incorporating optimized Li3InCl6 that suppresses PEO crystallization, weakens Li⁺–TFSI⁻ coordination, and enhances Li-ion transport after acetonitrile solvent removal. This effect originates from the structural collapse of Li3InCl6 in acetonitrile, which exposes In3⁺ sites that preferentially adsorb TFSI⁻ anions, thereby disrupting the regular arrangement of PEO chains and inducing amorphization. In contrast to other oxide-based inorganic fillers, our results also found that the interface between PEO and Li3InCl6 enables efficient Li-ion transport. The resulting electrolyte achieves a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.13×10⁻4 S cm-1 and excellent cycling stability with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode, retaining 74 % capacity after 100 cycles at 0.3 C and 25 oC. To confirm the generality of this strategy and mechanism, we extended it to InCl3 and GaCl3 fillers, which similarly promoted amorphization in PEO–LiTFSI electrolytes. This work provides a general strategy to design amorphous polymer electrolytes for high-voltage solid-state batteries operating at room temperature.

Modified Separator with a Composite Layer of LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Huihui Gan,Jiajun Sun,Ye Xia,Pengyuan Qiu,Liang Li,Wen Zhu

Functionalized separator is more competitive than commercial polyolefin separator for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we design the separator modified by a composite coating layer, which is composed of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithium bis(triuoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) (LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI, LLZTO-PPL). The LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer gives an impressive effect on dendrite inhibition of lithium metal. In comparison with commercial polyolefin separator, smaller overpotential value and better Coulombic efficiency are observed for the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Li symmetric cells and the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Cu asymmetric cells at various current densities of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer modified separator exhibits better high-rate capability and cycle performance for these cells assembled with different kinds of cathode materials (LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and their counterpart of a lithium metal anode. The functionalized composite coating layer modified separator may be a more attractive candidate material for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Boosting the mechanical strength and electrochemical performance of PEO/LiTFSI polymeric solid electrolyte via nylon nanofibers

Wang Lei,Yan Jiawei,Shen Wenzhuo,Zhong Min,Zhang Jiali,Guo Shouwu

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymeric solid electrolytes (PSEs) hold great promise for all-solid-state lithium batteries, but the intrinsic low mechanical strength of PEO limits their practical application and scale production. Herein, PSEs consisting of PEO and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (LiTFSI) supported on poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon) nanofiber matrix (nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs) are designed and prepared in situ on the Al, Cu foils, and the LiFePO 4 electrodes through coaxially electrospinning at 45 °C. The nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs show nonporous morphology due to in situ melting of the PEO/LiTFSI shell. The mechanical strength of the nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSE can reach to 3.32 and 2.44 MPa at 25 and 60 °C, respectively, which is stronger than that of the pure PEO membrane or the PSEs prepared via conventional solution casting. The nylon@PEO/LiTFSI PSEs also show tight interfacial contact with LiFePO 4 electrode, resulting in small charge transfer resistance of 376 Ω, and thus afford the LiFePO 4 half coin cells with long charge/discharge cycling stability.

Optimised sol-gel synthesis of Al-doped LLZO/PVDF–HFP/LiTFSI composite electrolytes with enhanced electrochemical performance

Chenghao Zhao,Wei Wei,Zhiyi Li,Zhijun Liu

Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) are promising alternatives to liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). CSEs offer superior electrochemical stability, safety, and mechanical integrity. Herein, a flexible CSE film comprising aluminium-doped Li 6.28 La 3 Zr 2 Al 0.24 O 12 (LLZO – Al) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF – HFP) is successfully fabricated via an optimised sol-gel synthesis and solution casting method. The LLZO – Al filler, with high cubic-phase purity, effectively reduces the crystallinity of the PVDF – HFP matrix, creating continuous Li + transport pathways. The optimised composite membrane containing 15 wt% LLZO – Al (CE15%) exhibits a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 6.1 × 10 –4 S cm –1 and a broad electrochemical stability window up to 4.8 V vs. Li/Li + . Additionally, it demonstrates excellent mechanical flexibility (elongation at break: 162%) and enhanced thermal resistance. The Li/CE15%/Li symmetric cell maintains stable cycling for over 2000 h at 0.1 mA cm –2 , confirming outstanding interfacial stability. Furthermore, the LFP/CE15%/Li full cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 166.1 mAh g –1 at 0.1 C and retains 86% of its capacity after 300 cycles. These results highlight the great potential of LLZO–Al/PVDF–HFP/LiTFSI composite electrolytes for high-performance solid-state Li-ion batteries.
