Simultaneous Absorption of H2S and CO2 into the MDEA + PZ Aqueous Solution in a Rotating Packed Bed

Junlei Zhan,Beibei Wang,Liangliang Zhang,Bao-Chang Sun,Jiwen Fu,Guang-wen Chu,Haikui Zou

This work presented experimental and modeling studies on the simultaneous absorption of H2S and CO2 into the N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and piperazine (PZ) solution in a rotating packed bed (RPB). The effect of different operating conditions, including MDEA concentration (CMDEA), PZ concentration (CPZ), liquid volumetric flow rate (L), temperature (T), and high gravity factor (β) on the absorption efficiencies of H2S and CO2 (ηH2S and ηCO2) were investigated. The results showed that ηH2S and ηCO2 were significantly affected by CMDEA, CPZ, L, and β. ηH2S and ηCO2 could reach 99.98 and 96.51%, respectively. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was established to predict ηH2S, ηCO2, and mass-transfer coefficient (KGa). Results showed that the predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental values (within deviations of ±10% for H2S and CO2). This work provides a potential technology of simultaneous absorption of H2S and CO2 for the biogas upgrade.

Nickel and iron impregnated alkali-modified fly ash nanoparticle for improved CO2 capture performance in MDEA aqueous solutions

Bing Gao,Yiran Gao,Yue Zhao,Lemeng Wang,Liqiang Qi,Kun Zhao,Dong Fu,Jiaqi Wang,Pan Zhang

The use of amine-based absorbers, such as N -methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), for CO 2 capture presents a promising strategy for emission reduction as global warming intensifies. However, high energy consumption and limited absorption/desorption efficiencies constrain its application. To address these challenges, this study developed a composite catalyst derived from fly ash (FA), which is alkali-modified and incorporates nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe) elements, with the aim of enhancing CO 2 absorption and desorption performance while reducing energy consumption. Experimental results indicated that the Ni/FA-AM catalyst significantly improved adsorption and absorption efficiencies, achieving an 8% increase in capacity, a 63% increase in peak adsorption rate, and a reduction of 6000 seconds in saturation time. Studies conducted in a wetted-wall column revealed that the absorption process predominantly occurs in the liquid phase. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated a 19% improvement in desorption performance, a 10% increase in peak desorption rate, and a 24% reduction in energy consumption, while maintaining stability over five consecutive cycles. The alkali-modified and Ni/Fe-enriched fly ash was confirmed to form active acid-base sites, facilitating the formation and disappearance of bicarbonate, thereby enhancing CO 2 capture efficiency. This was validated through XRD, BET, TPD, PY-IR, TEM, and FT-IR with 13 C NMR characterization. This study highlights the potential of modified fly ash as a low-cost and efficient catalyst for CO 2 capture.

Mass Transfer Characteristics of CO2 and Blended Aqueous Solutions of [C2OHmim][Lys]/MDEA in a Microchannel

Zhenbin Xu,Tingting Wang,Jianmeng Wu,Lulu Wang,Xiangping Zhang,Haifeng Dong,Changyu Sun

In this paper, the two-phase flow and mass transfer process of CO2 and [C2OHmim][Lys]/MDEA mixed aqueous solution in a T-shaped microchannel were investigated systematically. By using a high-speed camera connected to a computer, the two-phase flow patterns were recorded online, including the Taylor flow and a small amount of Taylor-bubbly flow. And the effects of ionic liquid concentration and two-phase flow ratio (QG/QL) on bubble length, specific surface area, gas holdup, and mass transfer coefficient were studied experimentally. The results indicate that the blended solution of [C2OHmim][Lys]/MDEA could significantly enhance two-phase mass transfer compared to single N-methyldiethanolamine aqueous solution. The reaction mechanism between CO2 and ionic liquid/amine mixed aqueous solution was also analyzed. On the basis of experimental data, some new correlations for predicting the bubble initial length and the volumetric mass transfer coefficient were proposed, which matched well with the experimental data. This work is helpful to provide new ideas for the design of CO2 absorbents and further improve the data of gas–liquid mass transfer in microchannels.

A Study on the Degradation Performance of MDEA/PZ and MDEA/AEP With the Influence of Sulfur Compounds

Xiaoming Xu,Ying Xie,Yang Xia,Mengxiang Fang,Jie Cheng,Chenxiang Yao,Zihao Liu,Hao Xiang,Nengchuang Zhu,Gengsheng Liu

With the increasing global energy demand and its environmental impacts, carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology (CCUS) has become a crucial means to reduce CO 2 emissions and address climate change. This study investigated the thermal and oxidative degradation characteristics of two amine blend absorbents, methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)/piperazine (PZ) and MDEA/2-(piperazin-1-yl) ethanamine (AEP) and explored the effect of sulfur compounds on their stability. The experimental results indicated that MDEA/PZ exhibited a lower thermal degradation rate, whereas MDEA/AEP, due to the thermal instability of the AEP component, showed poorer degradation performance. In terms of oxidative degradation, monoethanolamine (MEA) demonstrated a higher oxidative degradation rate, whereas MDEA/PZ and MDEA/AEP exhibited lower oxidative degradation rates. The addition of inhibitors reduced the oxidative degradation rates of MDEA/PZ and MDEA/AEP, with antimony potassium tartrate (APT) proving to be the most effective inhibitor. In sulfur-containing environments, sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide) significantly enhanced both the thermal and oxidative degradation rate of MDEA/PZ and MDEA/AEP, particularly for MDEA/AEP, where the thermal degradation rate increased by 25.2%. This study revealed the impact of sulfur compounds on the thermal and oxidative degradation of absorbents. The findings provide important experimental data and theoretical support for optimizing the stability of carbon capture absorbents.

Development of phase-change absorbent for hydrogen chloride with hydrogen and chlorine generation by electrolysis

Fen Liu,Jingcong Zhang,Wenxuan Bai,Jinxiang Chen,Zhiping Gu,Jiang Yu

To reduce the energy consumption of regeneration for HCl absorption, and to recover HCl to high-value products, a sustainable phase-change system was constructed with N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (NHD) in this paper. The MDEA/NHD phase change absorbent for HCl absorption is optimized by the ternary phase diagram and phase behavior of MDEA/NHD/HCl system. The results demonstrate that the biphasic system can be constructed with the mass fraction of HCl less than 28% and NHD component in the range of 23.0% ∼ 95.3%. Because of the higher stability of protonated MDEA·HCl than that of NHD·HCl, HCl molecules are mainly enriched in MDEA phase containing the volume ratio of less than 1/3 and partition coefficient over 100 at the neutral point. Therefore, only MDEA phase needs to be recycled, which results in reducing the circulation of regeneration by approximately 68%. Moreover, concentrated HCl in anhydrous MDEA phase could further prevent the side reaction of OER and improve the Faradaic efficiency toward HER and CER to reach 98.5% and 90.5% at 55 °C, respectively. And the energy consumption of regeneration is reduced to 0.37 GJ/t(absorbed HCl) in MDEA/NHD biphasic absorbent compared with that of 2.3 GJ/tCO 2 by DMX™ phase change absorption for CO 2 . By enhancing the conductivity and decreasing the viscosity of MDEA phase, introducing water in MDEA/NHD/HCl solution within 5% could significantly promote the current density and maintain high Faradaic efficiency toward HER and CER as 89.0% and 86.8%, respectively. Therefore, it is a promising technology to be applied in industry.

Cost-Effective Preparation of Carbonic Anhydrase with Superior Performance for Assisting Amine and Amino Acid Ionic Liquid Blends in CO2 Absorption and Desorption

Lei Mao,Yaxin Chen,Ruifang Zhang,Chun Yang,Yanhong Zhou,Guangya Zhang

The utilization of carbonic anhydrases (CAs) for CO2 capture aligns with the principles of environmental sustainability. However, there is an urgent need to minimize the cost of CA purification while improving their performance in harsh environments. A novel strategy was proposed to solve the above problems by employing the ferritin-tagged CA variant (DvCA8.0-F). The purification is achieved by low-speed centrifugation, yielding 92% activity recovery and 95% purity. After 14 weeks of incubation in a 50% MDEA solution at 50 °C, DvCA8.0-F maintained activity nearly equivalent to the initial activity, which showed remarkable stability compared to the free ones. Encouragingly, DvCA8.0-F had a yield of up to 800 mg/L, allowing for cost-effective CA-assisted CO2 absorption and desorption in MDEA solutions. The results show that DvCA8.0-F reduced the absorption time from 70 to 50 min at 40 °C and desorption time from 40 to 25 min at 96 °C in 25%MDEA+1%[N1111][Gly] solution with a final CO2 load and a stripped amount of CO2 at the same time. DvCA8.0-F exhibits the maximum reaction rate at 96 °C; the CO2 regeneration efficiency improved from 60% at 87 °C to 72%. When the concentration of DvCA8.0-F was 1.5 g/L, the absorption rate of CO2 reached about 90% of that of the 25% MEA solution. These results demonstrate the simplicity of preparation and the outstanding properties of DvCA8.0-F, which paves a feasible way for CA-assisted CO2 capture. This exciting strategy may also have excellent potential in enzymes for innovative chemical synthesis to achieve the sustainable development of green chemistry.

Impact of the Inter- and Intramolecular Tertiary Amino Group on the Primary Amino Group in the CO2 Absorption Process

Rui Zhang,Xiao Luo,Qi Yang,Fan Cao,Shupanxiang Chen,Zhiwu Liang

This work has investigated CO2 absorption using 3-(diethylamino)propylamine (DEAPA), a diamine that contains one primary and one tertiary amine in the same molecule. The results are compared with those for the blended amine system of monoethanolamine and methyldiethanolamine (MEA–MDEA), a mixed amine solvent with an equal number of moles of primary and tertiary amine. The 2 M DEAPA, 2 M MEA, and 4 M MEA–MDEA (1:1 mole ratio) were tested for their CO2 absorption performance. The experimental results show that the intramolecular tertiary amino group of DEAPA can promote the CO2 absorption rate of the intramolecular primary amino group and enhance its CO2 absorption capacity. The results using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance also showed that the intermolecular tertiary amine in the MEA–MDEA system was more favored for the promotion of the primary amine in the blend to form bicarbonate at an earlier CO2 equivalent loading stage and produced less carbamate than the intramolecular tertiary amino group of DEAPA did with respect to its primary amine. Furthermore, the CO2 equilibrium solubility of DEAPA was measured at different temperatures with various CO2 partial pressures, and then an empirical model based on these experimental data was developed. The results predicted by this model were fitted well with the experimental results. The Gibbs–Helmholtz equation was used to estimate the CO2 absorption heat of the DEAPA system, and the results showed that DEAPA has a CO2 absorption heat (−36.4 kJ/mol) lower than those of MEA, MDEA, and DEA. The results demonstrate that DEAPA has the potential to be an alternative solvent with a high absorption rate, a high CO2 capacity, and a low heat of absorption in CO2 capture processes.

Hydrogen-bond-engineered solvent microstructure enhances COS removal in MEA-MDEA systems

Bin Zhao,Yujing Liu,Bo Zhou,Peidong Zuo,Liping Chang,Jiawei Zhong,Zhenyi Du,Mengmeng Wu,Zhifeng Qin

Understanding the structure-property-performance relationship of mixed amine solvents is essential for developing high-efficiency Carbonyl sulfur (COS) removal technologies. In this work, the thermophysical properties, intermolecular interactions, and COS capture performance of monoethanolamine (MEA) and N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) binary aqueous systems were systematically investigated. The density ( ρ ) and viscosity ( ν ) of MEA - MDEA mixtures were measured over a temperature range of 293.15–318.15 K with varying MDEA mole fractions. Key thermodynamic parameters, including viscosity deviation (Δ η ), excess molar volume ( V m E ), and excess Gibbs free energy of activation (Δ G *E ), were subsequently calculated. The results reveal that within an MDEA mole fraction range of 0.35–0.60, Δ η reaches a maximum while V m E remains negative, indicating stronger intermolecular attraction and denser molecular packing. Spectroscopic characterizations combined with quantum chemical calculations further confirm the formation of directional O—N–H hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of MDEA and the amino nitrogen of MEA, which stabilize the solvent microstructure. Based on these findings, COS absorption-desorption experiments were conducted. Notably, the mixed amine systems with MDEA mole fractions of 0.3852 and 0.5446 exhibited a significant synergistic effect, maintaining over 95 % COS removal efficiency throughout the 120 min absorption process, along with excellent regeneration performance characterized by higher and more stable desorption rates during the 60 min regeneration phase. This work establishes a clear structure-property-reaction correlation, providing valuable molecular-level insights for the rational design of efficient amine-based absorbents for industrial COS capture.

Preparation of “dry water”-type liquid marbles with enhanced mechanical stability and CO2 capture performance

Jian He,Yifan Liang,Wenting Xiang,Changjun Liu,Pan Wu,Wei Jiang

Liquid marbles(LMs) are formed by encapsulating liquid with hydrophobic particles showed potential application in capturing CO 2 . However, conventional LMs are mostly millimeter scale and easily deformed by extrusion. This study aimed to enhance the mechanical stability by controlling the particle size to prepare “dry water” type LMs (DWLMs). The N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solution was used as the core in constructing DWLMs, and SiO 2 /graphene(GPE) was used as the shell material. The incorporation of GPE can endow DWLMs with photothermal conversion properties, with a particle size distribution around 100 ∼ 250 μm occupying the largest volume fraction. These DWLMs exhibited good flow ability and mechanical stability. Moreover, the effects of MDEA concentration, and content of SiO 2 / GPE on the preparation of DWLMs were investigated. Under an illumination intensity of 1 × 10 6 Lux, the temperature of DWLMs reached above 95 °C. Subsequently, the absorption performance was examined by a fixed-bed absorption tower, and it was found that decreasing the droplet size can increase the gas–liquid mass transfer area to reduce the mass transfer resistance. The height of the fixed bed constructed by DWLMs was higher than 7 cm, and the bottom particles can still maintain stability without agglomeration and blocking the supporting mesh. The breakthrough point (t 0.5 and t 0.95 ) of large-DWLMs (L-DWLMs) were greater than that of tiny-DWLMs (T-DWLMs). The absorption kinetics have validated that chemisorption is the primary mode of CO 2 absorption. In desorption process, the results showed that the desorption of CO 2 was realized by photothermic desorption, and the desorbed DWLMs were regenerated and recycled, which could prevent the corrosion of the device as well as utilize the energy provided by the sunlight.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO facilitated by MDEA-based deep eutectic solvent in aqueous solution

Naveed Ahmad,Xiaoxiao Wang,Peixu Sun,Ying Chen,Fahad Rehman,Jian Xu,Xia Xu

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) is an environment-friendly way to convert CO 2 into profitable products. Amine solution recently has been employed as an electrolyte in ECO 2 R but suffers from low efficiency. Herein, aqueous solutions containing different amine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used as electrolytes for CO 2 reduction. The effect of different DESs on the CO 2 reduction was investigated at Ag, Cu, and Zn metal electrodes. Tafel and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were applied to understand the CO 2 reduction. DES in aqueous solution facilitates the CO 2 reduction to CO with higher faradaic efficiency of CO (FE CO ) than amine solutions and a mixture of hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen bond donor (HBD). Both HBD and HBA have an influence on CO 2 reduction. [Monoethanolamine hydrochloride] [methyldiethanolamine] ([MEAHCl][MDEA]) gives high FE CO , 71% FE CO at −1.1 V vs RHE at Ag electrode, 33% higher than [MEAHCl][MEA]. Experimental results and EIS analysis reveal that the facilitation of CO 2 reduction to CO probably stems from a synergistic effect of nano-size agglomerate dispersion on Ag-surface, bicarbonate formation, exchange current density , and Cl − ions present in DESs. These findings present a feasible method to employ the aqueous MDEA-based DES solution as an electrolyte for CO 2 reduction.

Optimization investigation on the novel MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H2O phase change absorbent for CO2 capture

Yuqi Zhang,Yaxuan Zhen,Chunying Zhu,Taotao Fu,Youguang Ma

Chemical absorption has become the most mature and widely used CO 2 capture technology to address CO 2 emissions. Phase change absorbents based on mixed amines combine the advantages of individual amines and reduce regeneration energy consumption. A novel phase change absorbent system based on mixed amine was developed in this study and its CO 2 capture and desorption performance was investigated. The system comprises monoethanolamine (MEA), N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), n-butanol and water. Gas-liquid absorption experiments in the microchannel revealed that the flow patterns of the rich phase changed successively through homogeneous flow, irregular droplet flow, tubular-droplet flow and liquid slug flow as the gas-liquid ratio was increased. This transition was influenced by internal circulation, phase change and viscosity, causing the absorption rate to rise initially, then increase slowly before eventually declining. The desorption performance of the saturated rich phase in the MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H 2 O system was significantly superior to that of the 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution. Comprehensively, the optimal mass ratio of MEA-MDEA-n-butanol-H 2 O was identified as 1.2:1.8:4:3, achieving a higher desorption rate and lower energy consumption. Desorption efficiency and cyclic capacity were 1.8 times those of the 30 wt% MEA aqueous solution, indicating promising application potential.

Energy-Saving CO2 Absorption Using Mixed Amine Absorbent DA2MP/AEP/MDEA: Performance, Mechanism, and Pilot-Scale Experiment

Yan Huang,Tao Song,Zhiyuan Dong,Lehang Liang,Weixin Kong,Xinling Zhong,Tao Wang,Mengxiang Fang,Wei Li,Sujing Li

In order to address the limitations of traditional organic amine absorbent, such as the limited CO2 absorption loading, difficulties in CO2 product regeneration, and high regeneration energy consumption during regeneration, a mixed amine absorbent consisting of 7.5 wt % 1,5-diamino-2-methylpentane (DA2MP) + 7.5 wt % N-aminoethylpiperazin (AEP) + 15 wt % N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) (D-A-M) has been developed. This formulation employed linear amine DA2MP as the primary absorbent, while cyclic amine AEP and tertiary amine MDEA served as the auxiliary absorbents. The development was achieved through a rigorous screening process. The D-A-M absorbent demonstrated a CO2 absorption capacity of 0.78 mol CO2·mol–1 and a regeneration efficiency of 80.38%. Additionally, it exhibited excellent cycling stabilities over five absorption–desorption cycles with the regeneration efficiency consistently exceeding 70%. The reaction mechanism between the absorbent and CO2, as revealed by 13C NMR analysis, involves the sequential reaction of primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups. Electrochemical corrosion tests indicated that the CO2-saturated D-A-M absorbent showed significantly reduced corrosivity compared to the saturated 30 wt % MEA absorbent. In the pilot-scale experiment, the D-A-M absorbent achieved a CO2 capture rate of 97.5% and corrected regeneration energy consumption of 3.27 GJ·ton CO2–1, highlighting its considerable potential for industrial application.
